HENNON
HEAD COACH
Crossing the decade mark as head coach, Rodney Hennon has certainly built and maintained a winning tradition at Georgia Southern. The 2009 season marked a renewal of milestones as the Eagles claimed their ninth Southern Conference Championship, ninth 40-win campaign in history, 12th berth to an NCAA Regional and a national ranking. Hennon enters his 11th year at the helm of Georgia Southern after leading the 2009 squad to a 42-17 mark – the second 40-win season in his career at Georgia Southern. He tutored two seniors to national award watch lists. Senior Griffin Benedict was named a semifinalist for the Coleman Company Johnny Bench Award and was ranked the top catcher in the country according to Rivals.com. During the course of the season, Benedict tied an NCAA record hitting two home runs in an inning and capped the year batting .412 with 14 home runs, 65 RBI, a slugging percentage of .679 and on-base mark of .528. Senior Brian Pierce was one of 38 to be named to the initial Brooks Wallace Award for the top national shortstop. Pierce finished his collegiate campaign second on the team in hitting with a .362 average. For their excellence during the season, Benedict and freshman infielder Eric Phillips earned All-America honors at the end of the year. Benedict was named to the Rivals.com All-America squad, while Phillips was named Second Team Freshman All-America by Ping!Baseball. As a team, the Eagles entered the record books scoring 565 runs to rank fourth nationally during the season and second in GS history. Their 9.6 runs per game average placed the team fifth in national standings at the end of the year. With 703 hits, Georgia Southern placed 22nd in the country led by Benedict with 91 hits (46th nationally). Benedict’s on-base percentage of .528 was seventh in the nation. Collecting 42 victories as a team, the Eagles tied for sixth in the GS record books led by Chris Mederos on the mound who recorded 11 wins to tie for 10th in the program’s history. The road to the SoCon Tournament Title was certainly a memorable one for the Eagles in 2009. An extra-inning win over Davidson opened the tournament and put GS in a quarterfinal contest against Appalachian State. Four homers from Kyle Blackburn (2), Ty Wright and Benedict, plus clutch pitching, advanced the Eagles into a semifinal game against Furman in which the Eagles won, 16-4. Facing nationally-ranked Elon in the title game, Blackburn launched a three-run home run in the sixth inning for the lead and the pitching staff took care of the rest. GS defeated the Phoenix, 7-3, for the third title under the direction of Hennon and first since 2002. GS continued its tradition of developing players for the next level with four Eagles being drafted. Dexter Bobo was picked in the 44th round, Benedict was drafted in the 16th round, while Ty Wright and junior pitcher Chris Mederos were both selected in the 25th round.

tracts at the conclusion of the season. In addition, the 1998 WCU squad led the nation in stolen bases with 153, which shattered a 33-year-old school record and a 16-year-old conference mark. He directed a pitching staff which also enjoyed an outstanding season, turning in a 4.01 earned run
The 19-man 2000 squad made an impressive run through the Southern Conference regular season and tournament to capture both titles. Georgia Southern played in the NCAA Atlanta Regional that season. Hennon made three consecutive trips to an NCAA Regional from 2000-2002. Directly below is the 2001 team and the 2002 team is displayed at the bottom.

ing staff of just six arms, Hennon’s club set a new school record with a 23-7 league mark and won 23 of its last 33 games after finishing February and March just two games over .500 at 15-13. In 12 seasons as a collegiate head coach, Hennon reached yet another milestone victory in 2008, win #400 (12-6 at Wofford). He owns a 451-271-1 record – an average of 38 wins per year. In fact, when he captured his 100th career victory with an 18-5 triumph over Wofford on April 8, 2000, he accomplished a most-notable achievement by reaching the triple-digit milestone quicker than any other coach in league history. When he accepted the GSU position, Hennon ended a successful two-year stay as head coach at Western Carolina University after leading the Catamounts to an 81-38-1 (.679) overall record and a Southern Conference mark of 3816 (.704). After accepting an offer to guide the Western Carolina program in July 1997, Hennon quickly added his own distinctive chapters to one of the winningest programs in the Southern Conference. During his inaugural campaign as head coach in 1998, Hennon led the Catamounts to a 45-15 overall record and a 20-6 SoCon mark, tying the WCU mark for most victories in a single year and ranking sixth among all NCAA Division I members in winning percentage. His players claimed both the Southern Conference’s Pitcher and Player of the Year award while seven signed professional con-
Rodney Hennon Comments
A proven philosophy of success... “To be successful in any organization, I think you must first surround yourself with quality, loyal, capable people. I am very fortunate to have an outstanding group of as-
sistant coaches. I also believe that all successful teams and organizations are well-disciplined. Teams that are well-disciplined find ways to win in the late innings. That is, they don’t beat themselves. Discipline on the field relates to four key essentials which are directly related to winning baseball. First, we stress to our pitching staff the importance of consistently throwing strikes and challenging hitters. Second, our defense must complement them by making the routine plays. Third, we must take pride in running the bases aggressively and efficiently. Last, our hitters must consistently put the ball in play, have the ability to move baserunners and hit in key situations. To do these things, you must have unselfish, “team” players who will accept their respective roles. All championship teams are unselfish. As coaches we work hard to communicate to our players what their individual role is within the context of the team. I love my job and I think that it is apparent in my enthusiasm for it and the game. I want my players to be excited about playing the game day in and day out. Only a small percentage of baseball players ever get the opportunity to play at this level. I constantly remind my players, ‘You don’t get these four years of college back, so make the very most of each day and never take anything for granted.’ There is no excuse not to work hard and be enthusiastic about something you love.”
Georgia Southern, the place to play... “First, and foremost, I believe Georgia Southern offers our student-athletes a top quality undergraduate education. Our program provides great structure and support academically through the use of a variety of resources. The size of the university and the city of Statesboro is also a positive. With an enrollment of more than 19,000 students, it is a decent size school with a small college flavor. It is not a place where you get lost in the shuffle. From a baseball perspective, I do not know if there has ever been a more exciting time to join our program. With the renovation to J.I. Clements Stadium, we now have a facility that has the potential to host a NCAA Regional or even Super Regional. This, along with our new playing surface, state of the art batting cages and first-class clubhouse, makes this a very attractive place for student-athletes to play baseball. Our location features an ideal climate for college baseball and allows us to play a quality schedule each season. The Southern Conference continues to improve each year and sent multiple teams to a NCAA Regional. Most importantly, there is a rich tradition here and commitment to competing at the highest level. There have been many championship teams over the years and many players who have had the opportunity to continue playing baseball on the professional level.”

Georgia Southern Baseball... a special program “Georgia Southern baseball is a special program to a lot of people. There’s a rich baseball tradition here and this program has been well recognized both regionally and nationally over the years. We are striving to build upon this foundation, continually moving the program forward and carrying on this legacy. There is a strong commitment to baseball at Georgia Southern. The renovations at J.I. Clements Stadium to complement the Wiggins Building gives us a facility that is second to none. This, along with a firstclass playing surface, makes our facilities a great source of pride for all those associated with Eagle Baseball. Also, Statesboro is a great college town. I found out very quickly that there is a tremendous relationship between this community and the university. GSU is growing and moving in a positive direction. This is an exciting time for all student-athletes coming to our campus. From a recruiting standpoint, there has always been a surplus of talent in Georgia. We are located in a climate that is ideal for baseball and have all the necessary resources to compete at the highest level.”

age - tied for tops in the SoCon - and scored 445 runs, second only to Western Carolina. The 2002 Eagle team was similarly impressive. Georgia Southern completed the campaign ranked in the ‘Top 30’ in the nation in hitting at .321, a mark that at the time ranked third on the Eagles’ season record list. The Eagles were also ranked sixth nationally in stolen bases with 151, breaking a GS record that had stood for 27 years. The 2001 squad ranked third in history in at-bats, runs scored, and RBI while also ranking among the top five in hits (fourth), doubles (fourth) and total bases (fifth). On top of that the Eagles finished just 14 stolen bases shy of breaking the school mark. Tidick joined GS during the summer shortly after coach Rodney Hennon’s arrival in 1999 after spending the two previous seasons at Western working on Hennon’s coaching staff. Upon inheriting just four regulars off Georgia Southern’s offensive lineup from the 1999 season, Tidick began to meticulously work on fostering a new aggressive approach which helped translate into a Southern Conference championship. The statistical results were equally impressive. The Eagles turned in a batting average over .300 for only the third time in the previous 10 years, hit 60 or more home runs for only the third time in nine years and endured the fewest strikeouts in seven sea-

sons. “Mike is certainly a quality coach and a quality person,” said Hennon. “He’s a big asset to our program, coordinating our recruiting efforts. In addition, he is responsible for our outfield play and hitting, an area where he has a proven track record. We have a good feel and know what to expect out of each other.” In 1998, he helped guide the Catamounts to a 45-15 overall record which equaled the school standard, and a 20-6 SoCon mark. Western Carolina followed up the 1998 season with a 36-23-1 mark, boasting to have the SoCon’s top offensive squad with league bests in average (.328), on-base percentage (.523), runs (502), hits (684), home runs (82), and runs batted in (445). Prior to his move to Cullowhee, Tidick spent the 1997 season as an assistant coach at Elon after serving in a similar capacity at Coastal Carolina in 1996. Another testament to Tidick’s coaching abilities can be traced to the number of draft picks. During the past 12 years, 16 players were drafted or signed a free agent contract, including Atlanta Braves’ Charles Thomas. Jeremy Beckham was a 17th round draft pick by Tampa Bay and Shehan in the 30th round by Atlanta last year. Dowling was a 19th round draft pick by the Oakland As in 2006. Tidick also worked with four SoCon ‘Players of the Year’: the Catamounts’ Martin Barrow in 1998, Chris Moore in ’99, Georgia Southern’s Matt Easterday in 2000 and Shehan last year. Tidick first arrived at Western Carolina in 1989 after an illustrious career at Union-Endicott (N.Y.) High School. After sitting out all of WCU’s 1990 campaign following surgery, he turned in the first of four consecutive .300-plus hitting seasons when he batted .302 his rookie season. As the Catamounts’ everyday centerfielder in 1992, he was named Second Team All-Southern Conference hitting .328 and stealing 21 bases while helping WCU advance all the way to the NCAA South II Regional title game. He led Western back to a NCAA Regional (South I) as a junior, earning SoCon All-Tournament Team honors in 1993 after his average jumped to .352 with 19 doubles and 13 home runs. Tidick topped off an outstanding collegiate career in ‘94 as he was named SoCon ‘Player of the Year’ by batting .376 with 15 home runs, 17 doubles, 58 RBI and 20 stolen bases. In addition, he played errorless defense as the Catamounts received an at-large bid to the NCAA East Regional. Even to this day, Tidick still ranks among the Catamounts’ season and career leaders. On the season ‘Top 10’ list, he is tied for fourth in games started (64), tied for 10th in triples (4), tied for first in fielding percentage (1.000). Among the career leaders Tidick stands in a tie for second in games played (233), second in stolen bases (63), ninth in at-bats (782), eighth in hits (270), tied for eighth in doubles (54), 11th in home runs (34), 10th in RBI (158) and 11th in hit by pitches (23). He paced Western’s offense in eight different offensive categories throughout his career. Upon leaving Western Carolina, he ranked fourth in hits (270), seventh in RBI (158), third in doubles (54) and second in stolen bases on Western Carolina’s alltime career list. Among the Southern Conference leaders, Tidick stands 18th all-time in hits. After graduating from WCU in 1994 with a degree in Secondary Education, Tidick signed a professional contract with the Chicago White Sox and subsequently played in the Gulf Coast League (Sarasota, Fla.) and South Atlantic League (Hickory, N.C.) in 1994 and 1995, respectively. Tidick is married to the former Lori Bingham of Cherryville, N.C. They are the parents of a son Ty (10) and daughter Lorin Elizabeth (6). (From L-R) Mike, Ty, Lorin and Lori Tidick.
