However, all photographers are required to stay off the field of play as well as outside of both team areas. Head Coach // 6th Season // Augusta State (1995) Prior to joining the Eagles, Kennedy spent six years serving as the Director of Coaching and Club Director of the Augusta Arsenal Soccer Club. He oversaw a coaching staff of 25 and business operations of the club, in addition to coordinating the Capital Improvement projects at the Augusta Soccer Park. In addition to the administrative duties, he did extensive work on the coaching front. He worked as an instructor for coaching education with the Georgia Youth Soccer Association, and in 2003 hosted the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Coaching Academy. Along with his club coaching experience, Kennedy served as a staff coach for the Georgia Olympic Development Program. From January 2002, Kennedy was the boys head coach at Aquinas High School, leading that squad to the 2005 AA/A State championship. The Augusta Chronicle 2005 ‘Boys Soccer Coach of the Year’, Kennedy coached Aquinas to three consecutive Region 7-AA/A titles (2003-05) and during those same three years received the Team Academic Award by the NSCAA. Kennedy was an undergraduate at Augusta State, received his master’s degree from Georgia Southern, then went back to ASU to work as a men’s soccer assistant coach during the 1999 season. He was a three-year team captain during his playing days, twice was named to the Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll, and in 1995 received the Tommy Werrick Scholar-Athlete Award. During his graduate work at Georgia Southern, he received a Teaching Excellence Award in 1999. A member of the GS club team, he was named to the All-Tournament Team at the National Club Championships. A member of the NSCAA, he owns a United States Soccer Federation ‘A’ license and received from the NSCAA an Advanced National diploma and Director of Coaching diploma. He earned an undergraduate degree in English from Augusta State in 1995, then received a Master of Science degree in Sports Management from Georgia Southern. Kennedy is married to the former Ale Sabio, and they are the parents of a daughter, Meghan and a son, Jackson.

The 2006 Southern Conference ‘Coach of the Year,’ Kevin Kennedy enters his fifth season at the helm of Georgia Southern Eagle Soccer. Hired days before the team reported for fall 2006 practice as the interim head coach, Kennedy helped turn around a 7-10-1 team that finished tied for last place in the SoCon in 2005, to a 10-6-3 record and a top-10 regional showing that ultimately peaked at No. 7 in the South region by the NSCAA/ Adidas rankings. Kennedy was soon promoted to his current permanent head coach status in December 2006 following a remarkable season that exceeded initial expectations. The 2006 Eagles produced their best campaign since 1997 when GSU finished with a 14-4-2 record. Georgia Southern’s appearance in the SoCon Championship match versus UNC Greensboro (Nov. 5, 2006) was an accomplishment that hadn’t occurred in a decade. The Eagles shut out eight teams during the 2006 campaign, tying the record set back in 1990, including a scoreless draw versus visiting UNC Greensboro (Sep. 20, 2006), the eventual SoCon regular season and tournament winner and No. 15 ranked team in the country. In 2007, Kennedy saw his Eagles take part in a rare opportunity, performing in front of a national audience. Played at UNCG Soccer Stadium in Greensboro, N.C. (Oct. 26, 2007), Fox Soccer Channel broadcast a rematch of the 2006 SoCon Tournament championship. The 2008 season was a year to remember for Kennedy. The Eagles became just the 16th different team to defeat Clemson under the lights at historic Riggs Field. Georgia Southern shocked a crowd of almost 6,000 defeating the Tigers 2-1 in one of the biggest non-conference wins in school history. The memories didn’t end there for the Eagles. With SoCon Tournament seeding on the line, Kennedy pulled off another shocker earning the school’s first win over UNC Greensboro en route to a second place finish in the SoCon. In five years at the helm, Kennedy has seen his student-athletes excel both on and off the field, capturing conference and national recognition. Earning all-SoCon honors were Luigi Clendening (2007), Jon Cox (2006), Brad Mitchum (2006) and Adam Webb (2006). Cox also received the program’s first SoCon “Freshman of the Year” honor (2006) and went on to be named to the College Soccer News All-Freshman Third Team and the NSCAA/ adidas all-South Region Third Team. Along with Cox, Webb also earned NSCAA/ adidas all-South Region accolades while claiming a spot on the College Soccer News “National Team of the Week” and garnering SoCon “Player of the Week” honors the week of Sep. 20, 2006. Academically, Kennedy has seen several of his pupils demonstrate excellent work in the classroom. Following the 2006-07 school year, seven Eagles were represented on the SoCon Honor Roll, having earned at least a 3.0 GPA. At the end of 2007-08, the men’s soccer team had nine individuals on the Honor Roll. In 2008-09, Mark Beville was named Student-Athlete of the Year at Georgia Southern. Kennendy’s 2008-09 squad also earned teh NSCAA Team Academic Award for averaging a team GPA above 3.0 for the year. Before coming to Statesboro, Kennedy enjoyed a successful coaching career at the club and high school levels.

Ben Freakley is in his second season as the assistant coach at Georgia Southern after spending four seasons as the head coach at the Virginian Military Institute. In just his second season at VMI, he led the Keydets to the best Big South finish in school history, using a team filled with freshmen, three of which earned All-Big South Freshman Team honors. At VMI, Freakley earned a reputation as a great recruiter. His players consistently earned Big South All-Freshman accolades, and he was able to sign numerous Virginia Olympic Development players during his four-year tenure. A 2000 Georgia Southern graduate, Freakley played for the Eagles before spending the next two seasons as a graduate assistant at Georgia Southern. After graduation, Freakley began to build his coaching resume, spending the 2003 season as an assistant at College of Charleston, assisting with all aspects of the program. Prior to his stint at VMI, Freakley was the head coach at Erskine College. In his first season, he directed the Division II squad into the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference tournament, the first appearance in his players’ careers. The Flying Feet went 9-7-1 in his second season, the program’s first winning season in seven years. Freakley holds several coaching licenses, including a USSF “A” License from the United States Soccer Federation as well as a Premier National Diploma from the National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America (NSCAA). Freakley served as the head coach of the Boys ‘94 ODP Virginia team and was a member of the Region 1 ODP staff.

Freakley earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Public Relations from Georgia Southern in 2000 and received his Master of Science in Sport Management from the Georgia Southern in May 2003. He is currently pursuing a master’s in sports psychology. Freakley is married to former Georgia Southern women’s soccer player Melissa Cox. The two married in 2003, and now have two sons, Benjamin (3) and Connor, born in December 2009.

Volunteer Goalkeepers Coach 1st Season // Coker College (2010)

Ryan Lewis, a 2010 graduate of Coker College joins the Eagle coaching staff for the 2011 season as goalkeepers coach for both the men’s and women’s programs. Lewis worked with the Cobra keepers during the spring semester of 2011 before joining the Eagles as a graduate assistant. He appeared in 29 career matches over four seasons at Coker. Over that time, he made 102 career saves and was credited with seven wins between the pipes. A native of Satellite Beach, Fla., Lewis went to Satellite High School. His hobbies include surfing, wakeboarding and fishing. Lewis now resides in Statesboro.

Danny Irizarry enters his first season as Graduate Assistant Coach for the Georgia Southern Men's Soccer Team. A gradute of The Ohio State University, Irizarry played four seasons for the Buckeyes and captioned the Buckeyes in 2008. He was a two-time All-Big Ten Conference selection and pulled national all-freshman team honors in 2005 in addition to Big Ten All-Freshman team honors. In 2007, the Buckeyes reached the National Championship game and won the Big Ten Conference Championship with Irizarry in the Midfield. An international capped player, Irizarry played one match for the Puerto Rican National Team in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup. He played in the June 14th, 2008 match against Honduras (2-2) as a 58th minute substitution. He was on the bench for two other matches in the Islanders' failed qualifying bid. As a coach, Irizarry was a volunteer coach on the 2009 Big Ten Championship Team and also worked with Columbus Crew Juniors, Concorde Fire and at the Grater Atlanta Christian School. His father, Rodney Irizarry was a two-sport athlete at NC State in Soccer and Fencing. His grandfather, Bruce Yancey was a three-sport All-American (football, lacrosse, boxing). Danny now resides in Statesboro.

THE SOUTHERN CONFERENCE The Southern Conference The Southern Conference, which began its 91st season of intercollegiate competition in 2011, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference has been on the forefront of innovation and originality in developing creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. From establishing the first conference basketball tournament (1921), tackling the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922), developing women’s championships (1984), to becoming the first conference to install the three-point goal in basketball (1980), the Southern Conference has been a pioneer. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on Capital One Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions. The Conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference offices are located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the league first class meeting areas and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. Membership History On Feb. 25, 1921, representatives from 14 of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s (SIAA) 30 members met at Atlanta’s Piedmont Hotel to establish the Southern Intercollegiate Conference. On hand at the inaugural meeting were officials from Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn), Clemson, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology (Georgia Tech), Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi A&M (Mississippi State), North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) and Washington & Lee. Dr. S.V. Sanford of Georgia was chosen as acting chairman and N.W. Dougherty of Tennessee was named secretary. The decision to form a new athletic conference was motivated by the desire to have a workable number of conference games for each league member. With 30 schools in the SIAA by the early 1920s, it was impossible to play every school at least once during the regular season and many schools went several years between playing some conference members. In addition, in 1920, the SIAA voted down proposed rules that an athlete must be in a college a year before playing on its teams and refused to abolish a rule permitting athletes to play summer baseball for money. Play began in the fall of 1921 and a year later, six more schools joined the fledgling league including Tulane (which had attended the inaugural meeting but had elected not to join), Florida, Louisiana (LSU), Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. VMI joined in 1925 and Duke was added in 1929. By the 1930s, membership in the Southern Conference had reached 23 schools. C.P. “Sally” Miles of Virginia Tech, president of the Southern Conference, called the annual league meeting to order on Dec. 9, 1932 at the Farragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tenn. Georgia’s Dr. Sanford announced that 13 institutions west and south of the Appalachian Mountains were reorganizing as the Southeastern Conference. Members of the new league included Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Florida, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Mississippi A&M, University of the South, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt. According to the minutes of the meeting, Dr. Sanford stated that the division was made along geographical lines. Florida’s Dr. J.J. Tigert, acting as spokesman for the withdrawing group, regretted the move but believed it was necessary as the Southern Conference had grown too

large. The resignations were accepted and the withdrawing schools formed the new league which began play in 1932. The Southern Conference continued with membership of 10 institutions including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia, VMI, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. The second major shift occurred some 20 years later. By 1952, the Southern Conference included 17 colleges and universities. Another split occurred when seven schools including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest departed to form the Atlantic Coast Conference which began play in 1953. The revamped Southern Conference included members The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, George Washington, Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that includes 12 institutions and a footprint that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Samford, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford. Leadership John Iamarino was officially named commissioner of the conference on January 2, 2006. Iamarino has promoted the Southern Conference through an ambitious agenda which has improved competition, upgraded compliancerelated matters, launched the conference’s Hall of Fame and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the conference and its member institutions. The Southern Conference named its first commissioner in December 1950. Duke head football coach Wallace Wade made the transition from Blue Devil football coach to athletics administration as the first person at the helm of the conference. Lloyd Jordan replaced Wade as the commissioner in 1960 and served a 14-year term until Ken Germann became the league head in 1974. Germann was the commissioner for 13 years and orchestrated the league’s expansion to include women’s athletics. In 1987, he was succeeded by Dave Hart who spearheaded the transfer of the league office from Charlotte, N.C., to Asheville, N.C. Wright Waters succeeded Hart upon his retirement in 1991. Under Waters’ leadership, the Southern Conference expanded to 12 members, added three women’s sports and posted record revenue from the basketball tournament. Waters, who is currently the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference, was followed by Alfred B. White in 1998. White, a veteran member of the NCAA office, introduced the current conference logo and elevated the conference’s commitment to marketing and development of corporate partners. Danny Morrison headed the conference from 20012005 and orchestrated the league’s move from Asheville, N.C., to Spartanburg, S.C. Under Morrison’s leadership, the conference increased its marketing and promotional efforts.

Coaches and Administrators The Southern Conference has also been a breeding ground for some of college athletics’ most recognized coaches and administrators. Legendary basketball coaches Adolph Rupp of Kentucky and Everett Case of North Carolina State both worked the sidelines in the Southern Conference. Rupp guided the Wildcats to a 30-5 mark during the 1931 and 1932 seasons. Yet, for all his coaching accomplishments, Rupp never led Kentucky to a Southern Conference tournament championship. Case mentored the Wolfpack to six consecutive Southern Conference Tournament championships from 1947 through 1952. Lefty Driesell coached Davidson to three Southern Conference Tournament championships in 1966, 1968 and 1969. Driesell also won the league’s Coach of the Year award four straight times from 1963 through 1966. Former Georgia Tech coach Bobby Cremins earned league Coach of the Year honors three times in the late ’70s and early ’80s while at Appalachian State and is now the head coach at the College of Charleston. Terry Holland saw his basketball coaching career take off at Davidson when he returned to his alma mater in 1970. Holland was honored as the Southern Conference Coach of the Year for three consecutive seasons from 1970-72 and led the Wildcats to the conference tournament title and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament in 1970. J. Dallas Shirley, a member of the Basketball Hall of Fame, spent 21 years as the assistant to the commissioner and supervisor of officials in the Southern Conference. He also served as president of the International Association Basketball Officials and the United States Olympic Basketball Committee. The legendary Paul “Bear” Bryant got his coaching start in the Southern Conference as he guided the Maryland Terrapins in 1945. Another famous Southern Conference football coach is the late Frank Howard of Clemson, who guided the Tigers as a league member from 1940-52. The incomparable Howard won 69 Southern Conference games. The Southern Conference has been represented on the sidelines at five Super Bowls in recent years. Bobby Ross, who piloted the San Diego Chargers to the 1996 Super Bowl, was the head coach at The Citadel from 1973-77. Former Buffalo Bills head coach Marv Levy directed William & Mary from 1964-68. He was succeeded at William & Mary by Lou Holtz. William & Mary competed in the Southern Conference from 1936-77.

Championship History The first Southern Conference Championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament to become the first recognized league champion in any sport. The Southern Conference Tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. Commissioner Germann spearheaded the Southern Conference’s expansion to include women’s athletics during the 1983-84 season. That year, league championships were held in volleyball, basketball and tennis. Cross country joined the mix in 1985 and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track championships in 1988. Most recently, the conference instituted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of 1994. The Germann Cup, named in honor of the former commissioner, annually recognizes the top women’s athletics programs in the conference. Prior to his arrival at Georgia Southern this past year, Keel served as the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development, and professor of Biological Sciences at Louisiana State University (LSU) in Baton Rouge since 2006. From 2002 to 2006, he was a professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and associate Vice President for Research at Florida State University in Tallahassee, FL. Keel’s professional career began in 1985 at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita, where he served in a variety of positions including the Daniel K. Roberts Distinguished Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (1995-2001), President of the Women’s Research Institute (1993-2001), and Director of Reproductive Medicine Laboratories (1994-2002). Since joining Georgia Southern, Keel has been focused on expanding undergraduate and graduate learning opportunities whether through research, creative or community-based educational experiences. In addition, he has been working to increase Georgia Southern’s research and economic development opportunities. The University is already beginning to attract interest through its Renewable Energy Lab and Public Health Core Research Lab. Keel earned his Ph.D. in reproductive endocrinology from the Medical College of Georgia in 1982 and a Bachelor of Science in biology and chemistry from Augusta College (now Augusta State University) in 1978. He has completed postdoctoral work at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston and at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine, Vermillion. He is a member of the Society for the Study of Reproduction, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the Society for Gynecologic Investigation, among others. Keel has served on numerous boards related to his discipline, including the American Board of Bioanalysis, the American Association of Bioanalysts Board of Registry, the Oak Ridge Associated Universities, the Southeastern Universities Research Association and the Executive Committee of the Council on Research Policy and Graduate Education of APLU. Keel is married to Dr. Tammie Schalue, an accomplished scientist and scholar. Dr. Schalue currently serves as the director of laboratories at the Heartland Center for Reproductive Medicine and the associate administrator for the American Association of Bioanalysts (AAB). Both are certified SCUBA diving instructors.

Building a strong future for the Georgia Southern sports programs in his 15 years as Director of Athletics, Sam Baker has positioned the Eagles for success with new or renovated facilities, a foundation of financial stability and decisions to ensure the best for the student-athlete. An integral component of this ideology is the commitment to “Rings and Diplomas,” as the Athletics Department provides the opportunity for every Georgia Southern student-athlete to win a championship ring and earn a diploma. The emphasis on the “student” in studentathlete is one trademark of the Georgia Southern athletics program as Baker promotes the initiative and continued support for excellence in the classroom. Following the spring semester 2010, 156 student-athletes posted grade point averages of 3.0 or better with all 15 sports teams represented on the list. All 15 also had members of their teams on the Dean’s List for GPAs of 3.5 to 3.99 and 26 student-athletes achieved perfect 4.0 grade point averages for the semester. Numerous student-athletes have earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors with six named to the prestigious Academic All-America list. The most recent honoree was Eagle softball player Nina Iduate, who was voted to the national first team in June 2010. Continuing to add to the lengthy list of accomplishments for the program, the Athletics Department has now captured 27 Southern Conference championships and made 23 appearances in NCAA postseason play. The most acclaimed is the Eagle Football program, accounting for seven SoCon titles, eight NCAA playoff appearances (Division I FCS) and back-to-back NCAA FCS titles in 1999 and 2000, two of the nation’s-best six FCS national championships, during the Baker tenure. A primary focus of Baker’s efforts has been facility improvements for fans and student-athletes. The second phase of the softball stadium was completed in 2008 with the construction of stadium seating, team locker rooms and public rest rooms. Aesthetic changes to the north concourse at Paulson Stadium in summer 2008 matched the improvements made the previous season on the south side. The Gene Bishop Field House opened in the fall 2006, providing the home and visiting team with new locker rooms and a social meeting place upstairs for Athletic Foundation members. In the same time period, the Bennett-Ramsey Golf Center was completed, providing Eagle Golf with one of the top all-around practice facilities the nation. Building and renovations were completed for several projects including the renovation of J.I. Clements Baseball Stadium, the construction of a Track/ Soccer Stadium, renovation and expansion of Iron Works (Georgia Southern’s athletic performance center) and Men’s Basketball Locker Room (donated by Michael and Katrina Curry). In addition, other team locker rooms, sports medicine treatment center, equipment room, and coaches’ offices in Hanner Fieldhouse have undergone renovation and upgrades. Baker also served as the driving force behind the Dan J. Parrish, Sr., Football Building, the Herring Pavilion, football practice field renovation and the Troy Cowart Building (home to the Athletic Foundation and Athletics Ticket Office). As a leader in his profession, Baker has been active in his service to the Southern Conference and the NCAA. From May 2000 to May 2002, he served as chair of the SoCon Athletics Directors Association. As Georgia Southern Athletics Director, he served as a member of the NCAA Special Events, Olympic Liaison and Division I Football Issues Committees. In June 2009, he was honored with recognition as the NACDA Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year for the Football Championship Subdivision’s Southeast Region. Baker, a native of Front Royal, Virginia, joined the Georgia Southern management team after five years as Director of the College Football Marketing Corporation, a subsidiary of the College Football Association (CFA). Baker’s responsibilities with the CFA included securing title sponsorship for and administration of its “Promise of Tomorrow” scholarship program. A four-year agreement with Hitachi awarded $1.3 million in scholarships to aid individuals involved in intercollegiate football with the means to pursue careers in the field of education. From 1986-90, he was associate athletic director for financial development at Vanderbilt, where he oversaw the National Commodore Club. In the two years before moving to Nashville, Baker was associate athletic director for external affairs at the University of Oregon, the institution where he served as director of athletic marketing from January 1983 to May 1984. Baker entered the field of intercollegiate athletics at the College of William & Mary, where he spent seven years (1976-82) as director of athletic promotions. Baker holds a 1976 master’s degree in Sports Administration from Ohio University and a 1974 B. A. in Communication Arts from James Madison University. He and his wife of 34 years, Ann, are the parents of three children: Zeb, Elizabeth Ann and Josie.
