EAGLE FIELD Georgia Southern’s Eagle Field has undergone numerous additions over the past couple of years. The newest additions to the softball complex include locker rooms and bathrooms in a building behind the playing field. The new building will not only allow the players a place to prepare for the game but will also provide the fans a better gameday experience. “It is a nice change for the players, as it will give them a place that they can call home,” said head coach Maggie Johnson. A new brick retaining wall was installed around the area behind home plate. Its addition will enhance the overall apperance of the stadium. The infield was also improved with the addition of new dirt and the field was laser graded to allow for better drainage. “It is going to be a bit of an adjustment for the girls when a ball goes to the backstop. When a pitch goes by the catcher, it now bounces right back which will make things interesting,” stated Johnson. “With the netting in place of the chain link backstop, it is also a really nice upgrade and adds better visibility for the fans.” The bullpen is being reworked using warning track material and is being redesigned so that the pitchers will throw in the same direction as they would on the field. “It will be nice to have our own area beside the batting cage,” said Johnson. Over the past couple of years, the athletic department has added new seating, a press box and a new scoreboard to the softball complex.

Georgia Southern University

Georgia Southern University: Georgia’s Large-Scale, Small-Feel Research University The exciting opportunities of a large University. The personal feel of a smaller college. This is how Georgia Southern University is differentiating itself from other major universities across the country and around the world. From your first day on campus to a return trip with your family to an Eagle football game as an alumnus, Georgia Southern is a special place. Classified a doctoral research institution, Georgia Southern University is the largest and most comprehensive research institution in its region. A residential campus of more than 17,000 students, Georgia Southern has one of the most diverse campuses in the country, enrolling students from nearly every U.S. state and more than 86 countries. This spectrum of backgrounds, interests and talents contribute to making the University the perfect place for academic, cultural and social pursuits. Georgia Southern University is recognized for offering an outstanding undergraduate and graduate education for its students, featuring a curriculum and applied research centered on student success. Our focus is on our students and what they value: a well-rounded collegiate atmosphere; a faculty whose first priority is teaching; and a safe, attractive campus environment that encourages knowledge, critical thinking, discovery and personal growth. Georgia Southern University offers more than 120 degree programs at the baccalaureate, masters and doctoral levels through eight colleges: Business Administration, Education, Health and Human Sciences, Allen E. Paulson College of Science and Technology, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Information Technology, the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health and the Jack N. Averitt College of Graduate Studies. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the institution and its programs have earned special accreditation from professional and academic associations that set standards in their fields. The University is continuing to expand its graduate offerings to include additional master’s and doctoral programs delivered on campus, online or through a combination of the two. Founded in 1906, Georgia Southern lays claim to being one of the most beautiful campuses in the state. Comprising more than 690 acres, the classic college campus features gently rolling lawns, scenic lakes and soaring pines. The historic core of campus is the quintessential college portrait – Georgian-style red brick buildings with white columns around a sweeping, tree-lined circular drive. In fact, in the past year, the campus has become a popular location for movie projects. The past 10 years have represented one of the most active periods of construction on campus. The University has nearly doubled the size of the Zach S. Henderson Library and recently opened the Center for Art & Theatre featuring art galleries and a black box theatre where students and professional artists practice their crafts. One of the most visible additions to campus that began in June 2008 is the addition of a new state-of-the-art housing facility named Centennial Place. Featuring apartment-style living, retail shops and wireless Internet access, this new residence complex will redefine college living and will house nearly 1,000 students when com-

Georgia Southern University Southern for the future is through ongoing financial support. The Georgia Southern University Foundation and Southern Boosters help raise funds for academic and athletics programs. These donations, along with money raised by the University’s annual development efforts, provide much-needed funding to enhance the Georgia Southern experience for current and future students. More information about Georgia Southern is available on the Web at www. georgiasouthern.edu.

plete in Fall 2009. Georgia Southern conducts applied research and engages in public partnerships that seek solutions to local, state and regional challenges. Research varies from probing the genetic chemistry of disease-spreading parasites and answering today’s most pressing public health questions to developing new methods to improve public school students’ achievement in math and science. Centers for business research and development, rural health, international studies, public affairs, teacher education, rehabilitation technology, water policy and biostatistics involve teams of faculty experts, working in conjunction with undergraduate and graduate students, to tackle community and regional concerns. The University extends educational opportunities to citizens throughout the state via graduate centers located throughout the state of Georgia. As a center of learning and discovery, the University has a unique array of public outreach facilities – Botanical Garden, Center for Wildlife Education and Lamar Q. Ball Jr. Raptor Center, Georgia Southern Museum, Nessmith-Lane Continuing Education Building and the Performing Arts Center, which features an 825-seat theatre. Nowhere is the commitment to academics and athletics more visible than in the University’s Rings & Diplomas initiative. Our goal is to not only recruit outstanding athletes, but outstanding students. In short, we want our student-athletes to win championships and earn their degrees. This year’s graduates joined more than 75,000 Eagle alumni who have benefited from the Georgia Southern advantage. To help them stay in touch with fellow alums, graduates may become members of the Georgia Southern Alumni Association. The Association offers an array of services to maintain that Georgia Southern connection including the Georgia Southern magazine and the sponsorship of Eagle Club events, affinity groups and meetings throughout the year. Iron Works

Hidden behind the spotlight of Georgia Southern’s athletic success may be the most important component of why there is a beacon to begin with. Away from the playing fields, the cameras, and the excitement exists Iron Works, the heart of GSU’s strength and conditioning for all 15 intercollegiate teams. There, athletes enhance their physical capabilities through the training leadership of certified coaches, and the end results are usually displayed in the win column. Built in 1989, the recent Iron Works renovation included the addition of offices and the total rehab of the entrance and interior. Nearly $50,000 worth of new weight equipment including multisquat racks, two Olympic platforms complete with bumpers plates and bars, free weights, hammer machines and body weight scales were added. The biggest addition is a Mondo surface track 9x60 feet running down the middle of Iron Works for warm-up and agility work. Already at 5,400 square feet, the addition of nearly 1,000 square feet - including storage areas and modernized reception area - makes Iron Works a premier workout facility. Georgia Southern head strength and conditioning coach Tom Melton re-joined the GSU staff with the dual title of assistant athletics director/athletic performance in the spring of 2004. Assistant strength and conditioning coach Dave Jenkerson was hired in February 2007 to oversee the strength training for the Eagle football program. Thanks to donations received from former Georgia Southern football athletes, Iron Works is also home to two Vertimax Jump Trainers.

Sports Medicine

The GSU Sports Medicine Center underwent an impressive re-modeling phase in 1998 within its Hanner Fieldhouse location and features state-of-the-art equipment for the treatment and rehabilitation of injuries. The Georgia Southern Sports Medicine Department oversees the medical needs for all 15 Eagle teams. Eleven certified athletic trainers work with athletes to prevent and rehabilitate injuries. In addition to its ideal location, adjacent to the Eagle football locker room, the facility incorporates the latest advances and resources in sports medicine technology, including a complete hydra-therapy area and a large collection of student-athlete treatment stations.

Dr. Bruce Grube

President

Bruce Grube was appointed as the eleventh president of Georgia Southern University by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia in March 1999. He assumed office July 1, 1999. Georgia Southern University is the largest and most comprehensive center of higher education in the southern half of Georgia. A residential campus of over 17,000 students, Georgia Southern is located in historic Statesboro, a classic Main Street community. During President Grube’s tenure, Georgia Southern University has experienced the most active period of growth in its more than 100-year history. In fact, the University has undergone its greatest growth in physical facilities and the quality of academic programs. Georgia Southern University is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a Research / Doctoral institution. The University’s hallmark is a superior undergraduate experience emphasizing academic distinction, excellent teaching, and student success, complemented by masters and doctoral programs. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Georgia Southern offers 120 undergraduate and graduate degree programs through the doctoral level in eight colleges: Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Business Administration; Education; Health and Human Sciences; Information Technology; Jack N. Averitt College of Graduate Studies; Allen E. Paulson College of Science and Technology, and the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health. The University extends educational opportunities throughout the region at centers in Savannah, Augusta, Brunswick, Dublin, and at numerous remote sites statewide via distance learning. The Georgia Southern Eagles compete nationally in intercollegiate sports on the NCAA Division I level, with winning records that have earned nationally televised season appearances in football, basketball, baseball, and golf. Georgia Southern has won six national championships, more than any other university, in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) (formerly I-AA). Georgia Southern is a member of the Southern Conference. Prior to coming to Georgia Southern University, Bruce Grube served as President of St. Cloud State University (MN) from 1995 to 1999. From 1992 to 1995, he served as Provost at Colorado State University at Pueblo with responsibilities as the chief academic officer and the chief operations officer of the university. From 1987 to 1992, he worked as the Provost and Academic Vice President at California State Polytechnic University. Other administrative assignments over the years have included responsibility for strategic planning, institutional research, enrollment management, information technology, legislative and board relations, legal relations, and minor and major capital projects. He is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Alpha Theta, Phi Alpha Theta, and Phi Beta Delta academic honor societies. Grube has served as a faculty member in political science since 1971. He is active in national and international organizations and also serves on several community and state boards. He has served as Chair of the Council of Presidents of the Southern Conference and as Vice Chair of the Council of Presidents of the North Central Conference. Sam Baker

Athletics Director

As he works in his second decade as Georgia Southern Athletics Director, Sam Baker has steered Eagle Athletics from a period of transition and renewal to consistent success, national prominence and unprecedented growth. Under his leadership over the last 12 years, Georgia Southern has soared to national and conference championships, witnessed continued growth in athletic facilities and reaffirmed its commitment to student-athlete welfare and academic performance. Eagle Athletics have enjoyed extraordinary achievement across the board over the course of Baker’s tenure in Statesboro. Georgia Southern football has reasserted its national profile by winning seven Southern Conference titles, making eight NCAA I-FCS playoff appearances in the last 11 years, and capturing the 1999 and 2000 NCAA I-FCS National Championships. In all, the Eagle and Lady Eagle programs have won 26 SoCon championships and made 20 appearances in NCAA Championships under Baker’s leadership. Since 2000, facility improvements have been a main focal point of Baker’s efforts. During the 2007-08 year work phase one of the softball stadium complex was completed and aesthetic changes to the north concourse at Paulson Stadium matched the improvements made the previous season on the south side. Those improvements add to the growing list of enhancements that makes Georgia Southern stand out among its football peers as having the best facilities in the country. The department recently completed construction of the Gene Bishop Field House at Paulson Stadium and the Bennett-Ramsey Golf Center. The Bishop Field House adds to the outstanding football facilities at Georgia Southern. The Bennett-Ramsey Golf Center ranks among the top practice facilities in all of the NCAA Division I. During the 2004-05 academic year, work was completed on: the renovation of J. I. Clements Baseball Stadium, the construction of a Track/Soccer Stadium, significant upgrades in the Iron Works (Georgia Southern’s strength and conditioning center) and Men’s Basketball Locker Rooms (donated by Michael and Katrina Curry). In addition, other team locker rooms, sports medicine treatment center, equipment room, and coaches’ offices in Hanner Fieldhouse have undergone renovation. Baker has also served as the driving force behind the Dan J. Parrish, Sr., Football Building (completed in 2000) and the Troy Cowart Building (home to Southern Boosters and the GSU Ticket Office). Academics are a high priority for Baker and the entire athletics department. Twelve of the 15 programs improved their APR score from 2005-06 to 2006-07, including men’s tennis which scored a perfect 1,000. The only reason those three programs failed to improve on their numbers is because they scored a perfect 1,000 the previous academic year. During the 2007-08 academic year 141 student-athletes passed 24 credit hours and posted a 3.0 cumulative GPA, earning a spot on the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll. Additionally, Baker has been active in his service to the Southern Conference and the NCAA. From May 2000 to May 2002, he served as chair of the SoCon Athletics Directors Association. In January 2007, he began a term on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee. Baker, a native of Front Royal, Virginia, joined the Georgia Southern management team after five years as Director of the College Football Marketing Corporation, a subsidiary of the College Football Association (CFA). Baker holds a 1976 master’s degree in Sports Administration from Ohio University and a 1974 B. A. in Communication Arts from James Madison University. He and his wife of 32 years, Ann, are the parents of three children: Zeb (a doctoral student at Emory), Elizabeth Ann (Foster Care Review Board Coordinator for the Governor’s Office in South Carolina) and Josie (junior at the University of Alabama).

Southern Conference

The Southern Conference, which began its 88th season of intercollegiate competition in 2008, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference has been on the forefront of innovation and originality in developing creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. From establishing the first conference basketball tournament (1921), tackling the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922), developing women’s championships (1984) and becoming the first conference to install the three-point goal in basketball (1980), the Southern Conference has been a pioneer. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fiftholdest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions. The Conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference offices are located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the league first class meeting areas and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents.

Membership History The Southern Conference was formed on February 25, 1921 at a meeting in Atlanta, Ga. as 14 institutions from the 30-member Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as the Southern Conference. Those charter members included Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. Athletic competition began in the fall of 1921. In 1922, six more schools - Florida, LSU, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tulane and Vanderbilt - joined the fold. A year later, the University of the South joined the ranks. VMI became a member in 1925 and Duke was added 1929. Since then, conference membership has experienced a series of membership changes with 42 institutions having been affiliated with the league. The league has undergone two major transitions during its history. The first occurred in December 1932 when the Southeastern Conference was formed from the 23school Southern Conference. The league’s 13 members west and south of the Appalachian Mountains reorganized to help reduce the extensive travel demands that were present in the league at the time. In 1936, the Southern Conference invited The Citadel, William & Mary, Davidson, Furman, Richmond and Wake Forest to join the membership. The second major shift came about in 1953 when Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest withdrew from the league to form the Atlantic Coast Conference. This change was brought about due to the desire of many of those schools to schedule a greater number of regular season basketball games against local rivals. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford. On July 1, 2008, Samford officially joined the league, bringing membership of the conference to 12.

2009 season preview

Season Preview First year head coach Maggie Johnson took some time to sit down and talk about her first season at the helm of the softball program and what lies ahead with the team as they prepared for the 2009 season. On returning the team’s core from 2008 The one you immediately think of is Robyne Siliga, the reigning conference player of the year, she is definitely the core of the batting line up. We have several big hitters back. Defensively we have some freshmen who have been putting some pressure on the upper classmen, which I think is a pretty nice compliment. We have the returners who are used to playing a lot, then we have freshmen who are also used to playing a lot but not at this level. So they are doing everything they can to break into the lineup and really get the upper classmen to step up their game as well. On being picked to finish fourth in the Southern Conference I took the release out to the girls to tell them about it. They were upset and I was happy to see it. They were fired up because they have been top of the conference for the past two seasons. We talked about how we are all in this together and how we have great players but we need to find a way to make it all work together and play for each other. We’ve been working on playing for each other and trusting each other on the field, not just worrying about what we individually have to do. On having the most players picked pre-season All Conference It goes back to the core of girls who are coming back. We do have some very talented players. I didn’t expect anything less from them after the season they had last year and I think it’s great. However, pre-season is just preseason. It doesn’t really matter once everyone steps on the field in February. So we are going to take it for what it’s worth and file it away. On the schedule We have two tournaments at home to start. The first weekend is two double headers. Both teams are solid. Then the next weekend we host the tournament with six teams. Radford is going to be one of the tougher ones. I can say that having been there for the last five years. They have a very strong program this year. Then after that we have one weekend off before heading into conference play.

2009 Georgia Southern Softball

On the conference schedule I’m familiar with a lot of the teams having played them outside of the conference. There are a lot of teams in the Southern Conference that are rebuilding, on the edge of breaking open and being very competitive teams. The conference as a whole is building a lot of strength. I think right now is a good time to be in the Southern Conference. And it’s great having finished in the top half last year. We have to keep pushing ahead to stay on top of the conference this year. On the new coaching staff stepping in to a built team At first it was tough, just our style is dramatically different from what they are used to. But that is generally the case when a new staff comes in. Our pitching coach Liz Beirne comes here from Tennessee State last year. She works with the pitchers and she really pushes them and their confidence level. We are striving to reach that “I’m the best pitcher in the world” mindset. We work well together. Maria Laurato, our graduate assistant, actually played here. She is our bridge to why the kids are doing what they are doing or why they don’t understand or why it doesn’t seem to be clicking. She provides an overall competitiveness. I have a volunteer assistant, Michelle Carlson, whom I’m very appreciative of. I coached her at Radford and she is the kind of coach that doesn’t accept anything less than success and she’s not going to accept anything less than maximum effort. She’s been working with the outfield trying to get them to step up their game. On filling Laliberte’s starting pitching role We have Megen Smith, only a sophomore, who is returning with the most game experience. Junior Kristan Glover threw some innings last year after transferring from Tennessee Tech and has been working hard to get herself into the rotation. Brianna Streetmon, also a sophomore, saw limited action last year, but was great through the fall. With some confidence and experience, she could be a dangerous pitcher. Kelly Burnett, a junior transfer, has been one of our most consistent performers so far. She has the ability and experience to step in and make an impact. Hillary Martin, our freshman, is coming off shoulder surgery but has been cleared to throw. We’re anxious to see what see can do on the mound. So I told them that in the end it’s all a matter of who gets the job done. Basically it’s who wants it more. We have five pitchers on the staff and they all have the ability to get the job done. But it comes down to who really steps up, who really wants to be the one and who wants the ball.

Head Coach Maggie Johnson

maggie johnson Head Coach First Year UNC Wilmington, 2001

Johnson becomes the fourth head coach in the program’s fast-pitch history. She replaces all-time wins leader Natalie Poole, who moved to her alma mater, McNeese State, in June.

ented core of student-athletes returning and extensive facilities improvements, I believe we have the recruiting tools and support to establish ourselves as a highly competitive softball program.”

“We are excited that Maggie accepted our offer to become head coach,” said Athletics Director Sam Baker. “We liked the experience she gained under very successful Division I head coaches in her time at Radford. For her youth she brings a great deal of experience to the program. We feel like she is inheriting a solid softball program and we feel that she can continue on that path of success.”

Radford hitters thrived under Johnson’s guidance. As a group they set a new home run record four consecutive seasons, including 57 in 2008. Last season they broke the batting average (.307) and slugging percentage (.486) marks for the second straight year and posted a new on base percentage (.361) record that has held up for 12 years.

Johnson comes to Statesboro after five successful seasons at Radford University where she oversaw the development of the Highlanders’ hitters, coordinated travel, served as director of the Mickey Dean Softball Camps and supervised recruiting. The Highlanders went 200-121 in her five seasons as an assistant coach, a .605 winning percentage, and set a new school record for wins in each of the past four years. Last season’s team posted a 46-15 record which included winning streaks of 16 and 10 games. “I am honored and excited to be given the opportunity to lead Georgia Southern’s softball program,” said Johnson. “I am fortunate to assume responsibility for a team that has already established itself as a contender in the Southern Conference. “While at Georgia Southern, I will strive to build our reputation on a national level by competing with teams that are nationally ranked in our region, as well as teams from stronger conferences throughout the country. Individually, Vicki Madden led the Big South and broke the freshman home run (11) and slugging percentage (.689) records. Her classmate Shannon Keefe was second all-time freshman wise with 10 round trippers and a .675 slugging percentage. A year earlier in 2007 under Johnson, RU had what was a banner season at the plate as several Highlanders improved on their previous season’s numbers and numerous individual and team hitting records were broken. The Highlanders set school records in home runs (48), batting average (.297), hits (554), doubles (98), runs (320) and slugging percentage (.449). Along with all the team records, individual marks were obtained. Ashley Carlson (92) and Cassie Rhodes (81) recorded the top two hit totals in school history. Ashley Taylor tied the singleseason home run (12) mark and Rhodes tied the single-season triples (7) record. In 2006, Radford shattered the home run record (42), reaching 40-plus round trippers for the first time in school history. The Highlanders also batted .262,

Head Coach Maggie Johnson the highest since 1998. Prior to 2006, no Radford team had hit more than two round trippers in a game. The Highlanders broke the record three times during the month of March, culminating with a five-home run effort against Georgetown on March 25, 2006. Two of those came off the bat of Ashley Taylor, tying a 10year old single-game record that had only been done twice before. They also set the single-game grand slam record, blasting two at Virginia Tech, on March 1, 2006. Under her guidance in 2005, the Highlanders hit what was then a school record 32 home runs and posted a .259 batting average. Johnson was a four-year starter at first base for UNC Wilmington from 19972001. While at UNCW, she hit .325 as a senior and was named All-Southern Conference Second Team. She was also tabbed to the All-Tournament team as a junior. As a senior for the Seahawks, she set the school’s career record for home runs. She currently ranks as the alltime leader in putouts and fifth in RBI. Johnson entered the coaching profession in 2002 as an assistant coach at Pender High School in Burgaw, N.C. While at Pender, she was the batting coach and worked with the infielders, helping the team to the state 3-A playoffs for the first time in school history.

liz beirne Assistant Coach First Year Olivet Nazarene, 2004

Beirne will work primarily with the pitching staff and in recruiting and travel, and joins the staff after a one-year stint at Tennessee State University. “We are excited to add Liz to our staff,” said Johnson. “Her experience and competitive philosophy on pitching will blend seamlessly with our overall team philosophy. Our players are excited to have a full staff in place and we are anxious to move forward as a team.” Beirne spent the previous two seasons at Liberty University as a graduate assistant coach in charge of pitching and academic progress. In her first year at Liberty, two pitchers recorded 16 wins, marking only the second time the university had two 15-game winners on the same staff. In addition, during the 2006 season, the pitching staff set a school record with 351 strikeouts, surpassing the previous record of 291, and the team ERA improved from 3.08 in 2005 to 2.44. “I am excited to have the opportunity to work with Coach Johnson and the Georgia Southern softball program,” said Beirne. “I am looking forward to working with the team and Coach Johnson in order to continue building a strong and competitive softball program at GSU.” Beirne, a graduate of Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.), earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 2004. As a standout pitcher at Olivet, she accumulated a 74-26 career record in the circle, including 32 shutouts. In 2003, Beirne helped lead Olivet to a third place finish at the NAIA national tournament and a team record 61 wins, posting a personal record of 29-7 with a 1.61 ERA. Beirne was selected to the 2003 National Christian Colleges Athletic Association All-American first team. She followed that up with a 21-win campaign in 2004 and again led Olivet to an impressive 51-17 overall record and was an All-Chicago Collegiate Athletic Conference selection, as well as an NCCAA All-Tournament team member.
