Georgia Southern University
georgia southern university
This is Georgia Southern Georgia Southern University’s tradition spans more than a century. Among the red brick buildings and ancient oaks that line the campus is a University geared towards equipping its students with the knowledge and skills they will need in a very modern and global society. Today Georgia Southern provides a unique educational experience where students are able to take advantage of all of the benefits of a large university without sacrificing the personal touches of a smaller college.
4
TRADITION LIVES HERE
When you drive through the main campus entrance, you are following a path more than 100 years old. Founded in 1906, Georgia Southern’s now sprawling nearly 700 acre campus began as three red brick buildings surrounding a vast lawn known as Sweetheart Circle. As they did more than a century ago, students still flock to Sweetheart Circle to relax in the sun, spend time with friends, or catch up on their studies. Tradition lives at Georgia Southern and
2010 Georgia Southern Softball
it is woven into the very foundation of the University. The Statesboro summer is the perfect backdrop for the University President’s annual watermelon cutting. In the fall, the Homecoming Parade crosses campus and still winds around historic Sweetheart Circle making it a memorable parade for students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community. Football players arrive to their home games in the same school buses used more than a quarter of a century ago
by the University’s fledgling team. And in May when the moment comes for students to become alumni, an eagle flies over the graduates as their years at Georgia Southern come to a close. The traditions of this classic University are the kinds of moments that make the Georgia Southern experience one students cherish for a lifetime.
LARGE SCALE
Georgia Southern University’s commitment to educational excellence continues to be lauded by some of the most prestigious publications in the country. The 2009 edition of America’s Best Colleges, published by U.S. News and World Report, included Georgia Southern in the national university category. The University was one of only 262 American universities, both public and private, in that category. Kiplinger’s named Georgia Southern to its “Top 100 Best Values in Public Colleges” list in the fall of 2008. And, the Princeton Review named the University’s College of Business Administration to its list of the “Best 296 Business Schools.” The University’s growth and achievement has led to its being designated as a Carnegie/Doctoral Research University. This designation further elevates the University as an institution recognized for excellence. The College of Information Technology, the only one of its kind in the southeast
United States, is one of only 10 universities in the world to teach the cutting-edge technology of virtualization on VM software. In addition, the College is one of only a select few in the country to offer SAP certification as part of its degree program. This means students will graduate with cutting-edge knowledge and a competitive advantage the vast majority of Information Technology graduates—and even many professionals— do not have, and will save their employers thousands of dollars in training costs. Georgia Southern University’s College of Education claims numerous Georgia Teachers of the Year and recently one of its alumni was named the Metlife National Principal of the Year. The College also obtained accreditation by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Education Programs (CACREP) in the three specialty areas of community counseling, school counseling and student affairs. Georgia Southern is now the only institution in Georgia to be CACREP accredited
in the area of student affairs, and the only one in southeast Georgia CACREP accredited in community counseling and school counseling. Faculty members from the biology department in the Allen E. Paulson College of Science and Technology were recently awarded a $2.3 million National Science Foundation grant to promote the teaching of molecular biology to students in Georgia’s schools. Faculty, staff and students are also working on projects involving bio-fuels and wind energy. The past 10 years have marked the single largest period of growth in the University’s history. A record number of students now attend Georgia Southern, and record numbers of outstanding students are applying to join their ranks. More than 10,000 people applied to Georgia Southern for the Fall 2009 semester, and final enrollment numbers are expected to set a new record.

georgia southern university SMALL FEEL
While progress brings change, one thing that has not changed is Georgia Southern’s commitment to its students. For decades, the University’s hallmark has been its dedication to remaining an institution centered on its students. The University has a low student/teacher ratio, and faculty members often work with students one on one. At Georgia Southern, our students appreciate learning in small groups where professors know their names. Even with nearly 18,000 students on campus, students feel at home seeing familiar faces when walking through campus. Many undergraduate students enjoy having the opportunity to work on research projects led by faculty members. Additionally, both students and parents appreciate the classic main-street community of Statesboro that features numerous amenities, shopping and dining options.
EDUCATION FOR A LIFETIME
Whether a student is a new high school graduate or a professional deciding to return to the University for an advanced or online degree, Georgia Southern has numerous programs and options for students in every stage of life. The University’s College of Graduate Studies is seeing unprecedented growth in its programs. An increasing number of students are also opting for online classes. During the spring 2009 commencement ceremony, a record number of graduates received online degrees—including several that made their first trip to campus to receive their diploma. The University’s Dublin Center and the Coastal Georgia Center in Savannah take the Georgia Southern classroom experience to students outside of Statesboro. The College of Business Administration even offers an MBA program that allows professionals to earn their master’s without leaving Savannah.
BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE
Imagine a college residence hall with suite and apartment-style living, a shopping area and a food court. That on-campus living experience became reality at Georgia Southern with the opening of Centennial
6
Place. As home to 1,001 students, Centennial Place is setting a new standard in on-campus living. Several key facilities at the University recently celebrated expansions and renovations. A four-year, $22.75 million dollar project to expand and renovate the Zach S. Henderson Library tripled the size of the facility. Today it provides students and faculty with a state-of-the-art facility for research and study. The $7.8 million dollar renovation and extension of the Foy Building added 3,599 square feet of space. Foy’s renovation includes a major enhancement to the outstanding Carol A. Carter Recital Hall. The Wetland Preserve at Georgia Southern University’s Center for Wildlife Education and the Lamar Q Ball, Jr. Raptor Center opened to the public this past spring. The 12-acre addition includes a small pond and capture basin that houses a beaver lodge, a cypress pond that will be home to a variety of wading birds like herons and egrets, and a waterfowl pond. The 17-acre center is one of only a select few in the nation to be located in the heart of a major university campus.
REACHING OUT TO THE COMMUNITY AND THE WORLD
Georgia Southern students have more opportunity than ever to study alongside others from countries all over the world. Both the number of students coming to Georgia Southern from other countries and Georgia
2010 Georgia Southern Softball
Southern students studying abroad has grown steadily over the last decade. The international experience is not limited to study. During spring break 2009, more than 100 Georgia Southern students traveled the world volunteering. They helped build a medical clinic in the Bahamas, volunteered with orphans in Honduras and worked alongside the world famous Bogside Artists refurbishing their political murals in Northern Ireland. Closer to home, students spend hundreds of hours every year volunteering in the Bulloch County area through greek organizations, service clubs, and the Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement. Georgia Southern students learn that service to others is always time well spent. The University works to better the community every day. The College of Health and Human Sciences is partnering with the Bulloch County Health Department to curb childhood obesity. Preventing disease and bettering the quality of life for people at risk of serious health problems is a focus of the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health. And the psychology department in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences recently expanded the services at its psychology clinic to include children. Every day someone, somewhere in the world is touched by the work of a Georgia Southern student, alumni, staff, or faculty member—making the reach of this University truly global.

EAGLE FIELD Georgia Southern’s Eagle Field has undergone numerous additions over the past couple of years. The newest additions to the softball complex include locker rooms and bathrooms in a building behind the playing field. The new building will not only allow the players a place to prepare for the game but will also provide the fans a better gameday experience. “It is a nice change for the players, as it will give them a place that they can call home,” said head coach Maggie Johnson. A new brick retaining wall was installed around the area behind home plate. Its addition will enhance the overall apperance of the stadium. The infield was also improved with the addition of new dirt and the field was laser graded to allow for better drainage. “It is going to be a bit of an adjustment for the girls when a ball goes to the backstop. When a pitch goes by the catcher, it now bounces right back which will make things interesting,” stated Johnson. “With the netting in place of the chain link backstop, it is also a really nice upgrade and adds better visibility for the fans.” The bullpen is being reworked using warning track material and is being redesigned so that the pitchers will throw in the same direction as they would on the field. “It will be nice to have our own area beside the batting cage,” said Johnson. Over the past couple of years, the athletic department has added new seating, a press box and a new scoreboard to the softball complex.

Brooks A. Keel, Ph.D. was named the 12th President of Georgia Southern University on October 26, 2009 and will assume office on January 1, 2010. Prior to joining Georgia Southern, Keel had served as the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development, and Professor of Biological Sciences, at Louisiana State University (LSU) since 2006. As vice chancellor, Keel led LSU’s research and economic initiatives and activities, including expanding research funding opportunities for faculty and students, encouraging entrepreneurial activity and broadening the University’s technology transfer operations and partnerships with statewide business organizations in support of long-term economic development for Louisiana. In addition, he coordinated the work of more than 1,300 faculty involved in approximately 2,000 sponsored research projects, and oversaw the areas of LSU’s budget that dealt with $156 million in externally funded grants and programs. Prior to his appointment at Louisiana State University, Keel was a professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Associate Vice President for Research at Florida State University, Tallahassee, from 2002-2006. His professional career began in 1985 at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita, where he served in a variety of positions including the Daniel K. Roberts Distinguished Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology (1995-2001), President of the Women’s Research Institute (1993-2001), and Director of Reproductive Medicine Laboratories (1994-2002). He is a member of the Society for the Study of Reproduction, the American Society for Reproductive Medicine and the Society for Gynecologic Investigation, among others. Keel has served on numerous boards related to his discipline, including the American Board of Bioanalysis, and has been honored for his work by these and other organizations. Keel, a native of Augusta, Ga., earned a Ph.D. in reproductive endocrinology from the Medical College of Georgia and a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry from Augusta College (now Augusta State University). He completed his postdoctoral work at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston and the University of South Dakota School of Medicine, Vermillion.
sam baker
director of athletics Sam Baker began his tenure as Georgia Southern Athletics Director in January 1996, and in his 14 years has taken the Eagles to unprecedented growth and success, emphasizing ‘Rings and Diplomas’, making sure every student-athlete has a chance to win a championship ring and earn a diploma. Under Baker’s direction, the athletics department has now captured 27 Southern Conference championships and made 22 appearances in NCAA postseason play, including back-toback NCAA FCS national titles in 1999 and 2000. A perennial power on the national stage, Eagle Football has accounted for seven of the SoCon titles, eight of the NCAA playoff appearances (Division I FCS) and two of the nation’s-leading six FCS national championships during Baker’s tenure. Baker makes sure all coaches and staff emphasize the student in studentathlete. Georgia Southern continues to make progress in the Academic Progress Rate (APR). Twelve of the 15 programs improved their APR score from 2005-06 to 2006-07. Last year the Eagles saw five sports programs scored a perfect 1,000 - the highest total ever since APR was implemented. Last spring Georgia Southern Athletics had 173 student-athletes earned at least a 3.0 GPA, including 37 that recorded a perfect 4.0. Under Baker’s direction, numerous student-athletes have earned CoSIDA Academic AllDistrict honors and five have gone on to earn Academic All-America distinction. Over the last decade facility improvements have been a main focal point of Baker’s efforts. Last spring, phase two of the softball stadium was completed with the building of stadium seating, a locker room and public facilities. During the 2007-08 year work phase one of the softball stadium complex was completed. Aesthetic changes to the north concourse at Paulson Stadium in summer 2008 matched the improvements made the previous season on the south side. The Gene Bishop Field House opened in fall 2006, providing the home and visiting team with new locker rooms and a social meeting place upstairs for Athletic Foundation members. Those improvements add to the growing list of enhancements that makes Georgia Southern stand out among its football peers as having the best facilities in the country. That same year the Bennett-Ramsey Golf Center was completed. The new building provides Eagle Golf with one of the top all-around practice facilities in all of the NCAA Division I. During the 2004-05 academic year, work was completed on: the renovation of J. I. Clements Baseball Stadium, the construction of a Track/Soccer Stadium, renovations to Iron Works (Georgia Southern’s strength and conditioning center) and Men’s Basketball Locker Rooms (donated by Michael and Katrina Curry). In addition, other team locker rooms, sports medicine treatment center, equipment room, and coaches’ offices in Hanner Fieldhouse have undergone renovation. Baker has also served as the driving force behind the Dan J. Parrish, Sr., Football Building (completed in 2000) and the Troy Cowart Building (home to the Athletic Foundation and GSU Ticket Office). Additionally, Baker has been active in his service to the Southern Conference and the NCAA. From May 2000 to May 2002, he served as chair of the SoCon Athletics Directors Association. For all his work, in June 2009 Baker was named NACDA Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year for the Football Championship Subdivision’s Southeast Region. Baker, a native of Front Royal, Virginia, joined the Georgia Southern management team after five years as Director of the College Football Marketing Corporation, a subsidiary of the College Football Association (CFA). Baker’s responsibilities with the CFA included securing title sponsorship for and administration of its “Promise of Tomorrow” scholarship program. A four-year agreement with Hitachi awarded $1.3 million in scholarships to aid individuals involved in intercollegiate football with the means to pursue careers in the field of education. From 1986-90, he was associate athletic director for financial development at Vanderbilt, where he oversaw the National Commodore Club. In the two years before moving to Nashville, Baker was associate athletic director for external affairs at the University of Oregon, the institution where he served as director of athletic marketing from January 1983 to May 1984. Baker entered the field of intercollegiate athletics at the College of William & Mary, where he spent seven years (1976-82) as director of athletic promotions. Baker holds a 1976 master’s degree in Sports Administration from Ohio University and a 1974 B. A. in Communication Arts from James Madison University. He and his wife of 33 years, Ann, are the parents of three children: Zeb, Elizabeth Ann and Josie.

Southern Conference The Southern Conference, which began its 89th season of intercollegiate competition in 2009, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. The Southern Conference has been on the forefront of innovation and originality in developing creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. From establishing the first conference basketball tournament (1921), tackling the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922), developing women’s championships (1984), to becoming the first conference to install the three-point goal in basketball (1980), the Southern Conference has been a pioneer. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fiftholdest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions. The Conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference offices are located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the league first class meeting areas and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. On Feb. 25, 1921, representatives from 14 of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association’s (SIAA) 30 members met at Atlanta’s Piedmont Hotel to establish the Southern Intercollegiate Conference. On hand at the inaugural meeting were officials from Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute (Auburn), Clemson, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology (Georgia Tech), Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi A&M (Mississippi State), North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) and Washington & Lee. Dr. S.V. Sanford of Georgia was chosen as acting chairman and N.W. Dougherty of Tennessee was named secretary. The decision to form a new athletic conference was motivated by the desire to have a workable number of conference games for each league member. With 30 schools in the SIAA by the early 1920s, it was impossible to play every school at least once during the regular season and
many schools went several years between playing some conference members. In addition, in 1920, the SIAA voted down proposed rules that an athlete must be in a college a year before playing on its teams and refused to abolish a rule permitting athletes to play summer baseball for money. Play began in the fall of 1921 and a year later, six more schools joined the fledgling league including Tulane (which had attended the inaugural meeting but had elected not to join), Florida, Louisiana (LSU), Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. VMI joined in 1925 and Duke was added in 1929. By the 1930s, membership in the Southern Conference had reached 23 schools. C.P. “Sally” Miles of Virginia Tech, president of the Southern Conference, called the annual league meeting to order on Dec. 9, 1932 at the Farragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tenn. Georgia’s Dr. Sanford announced that 13 institutions west and south of the Appalachian Mountains were reorganizing as the Southeastern Conference. Members of the new league included Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Florida, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Mississippi A&M, University of the South, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt. According to the minutes of the meeting, Dr. Sanford stated that the division was made along geographical lines. Florida’s Dr. J.J. Tigert, acting as spokesman for the withdrawing group, regretted the move but believed it was necessary as the Southern Conference had grown too large. The resignations were accepted and the withdrawing schools formed the new league which began play in 1932. The Southern Conference continued with membership of 10 institutions including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia, VMI, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. The second major shift occurred some 20 years later. By 1952, the Southern Conference included 17 colleges and universities. Another split occurred when seven schools including Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest departed to form the Atlantic Coast Conference which began play in 1953. The revamped Southern Conference included members The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, George Washington, Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that includes 12 institutions and a footprint that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Samford, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford.

2010 Season Preview
Experienced Eagles Poised for Title Run Conference Pitcher of the Year, junior Brianna Streetmon, Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, outfielder Marie Fogle, and Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award nominee, senior shortstop Nina Iduate. Selected to finish second in the conference by the coaches, the Eagles racked up other accolades as well. Streetmon was selected as Preseason Pitcher of the Year, and five Eagles were named to Preseason All-Southern Conference teams. Three players were tabbed to the first team, Iduate at shortstop, Fogle as an outfielder, and Streetmon in the circle, while third baseman Jenny Side and designated player Megen Smith were selected to the second team. “It’s always an honor to receive preseason awards, as it shows a certain level of respect from our conference,” Head Coach Maggie Nina Iduate
Brianna Streetmon Georgia Southern completed the 2009 campaign with a 29-25 record with a 14-10 mark in the Southern Conference, and advanced to its fourth consecutive Southern Conference Tournament Finals appearance. The 2010 Eagles have the pieces to make a run at the tournament title, as well as compete for the regular season crown, despite some key losses. Among the departed, Robyne Siliga finished her Eagle career as the career leader in Home Runs (35), Slugging Percentage (.546), Runs Batted In (143), and walks (142). However, the Eagles return 11 letterwinners from the 2009 squad, including seven starters in the field and two in the circle. Most notably, Southern

Johnson said. “The team should feel a confidence going into the season knowing that other teams look at us as one of the “teams to beat.” That being said, preseason recognition does not carry into the actual season, so we will set out to prove ourselves as one of the toughest teams to beat in the Southern Conference.” A pair of juniors, Streetmon and Smith will lead the Eagles in the circle. The duo combined for 20 wins in 2009 with a 2.865 ERA, and 173 strikeouts. Smith also established herself as a closer, recording four saves during her sophomore campaign. Freshman Kaitlyn Szczepanski, a 5-7 pitcher from Chesapeake, Va., will also be turned to for relief. “The game starts in the circle, and knowing that we bring a significant amount of experience and success to the position should be a strong foundation to establish a confidence among the defensive players behind our pitchers,” Johnson stated. “Our hitters will need to step us as well knowing that we have the strength in the circle to keep us in a position to win ball games.”
2010 Season Preview Offensively, the Eagles return four starters who finished the 2009 campaign hitting at least .300: Iduate (.339), Fogle (.316), Smith (.308), and Russo (.301). Ennis finished her freshman season hitting .299. These five starters also combined to score 113 runs, but two of the team’s top-three RBI leaders must be replaced. Amanda Hall led the team with 45 RBIs, and Siliga was third with 31. Russo is the top returning player in the category, driving in 32 with eight home runs. Siliga and Hall also combined for nearly half of the Eagles’ home runs a year ago, hitting 15 of the team’s 36 home runs. “Amanda Hall and Robyne Siliga were not only strong hitters, but fighters who refused to go down without a fight,” Johnson recalled. “We will have to find that drive within ourselves to replace what they have taken with them. Megen Smith, Sam Russo, and Jenny Side all have the ability to consistently hit for power. We will need to commit
Marie Fogle
Sam Russo
Georgia Southern returns seven defensive players who saw significant playing time last season, including three of four starters in the infield. Senior Sam Russo anchors first base with 165 starts over the last three seasons, while sophomore Hanna Ennis is the likely starter at second after starting all 54 games as a freshman. Iduate returns on the left side of the infield with 140 career starts at shortstop. In 2009, the trio committed just 35 errors in 874 chances. Fogle and senior Kelly Burnett give the Eagles experience in the outfield. Fogle started 45 games as a freshman, recording 46 putouts, one assist and only three errors in 50 chances, while Burnett played in 17 games as a junior transfer from Palm Beach Community College. Coach Johnson will rely heavily on this experience, as well as contributions from seven freshmen. “The addition of some very talented freshmen will provide support as well as competition for the returning core of upperclassmen,” Johnson explained. “We will look to our returners to teach our freshmen how Eagle Softball is played. Our senior class has had much experience and success among them, and we will look to them to lead us through the season. Jenny Side to putting up tough at bats, from the top to the bottom of the lineup every time we step into the box, and look to battle opposing pitchers with a mind set to attack.” The Eagles begin the 2010 season hosting the Eagle Invitational, and have a difficult non-conference schedule to prepare them for the grind of playing in the Southern Conference. Georgia Southern will participate in two tournaments in Florida, taking on St. Francis (PA), Minnesota, UConn, Villanova, Eastern Michigan, Providence, Harvard, College of Charleston, Boston College, and UCF. The Eagles will also take on in-state rivals Georgia Tech, Georgia, Georgia State, and Kennesaw State. Georgia, Georgia Tech and UCF are all rated in the top-50 in RPI by the NCAA, while Georgia State is in the top-100. Georgia Southern hosts SoCon foes Western Carolina, Chattanooga, College of Charleston, and Elon, and will travel to UNC Greensboro, Appalachian State, Samford, and Furman, wrapping up the regular season in Greenville, S.C., against the Paladins.

Head Coach Maggie Johnson
maggie johnson Head Coach Second Year UNC Wilmington, 2001
Johnson became the fourth head coach in the program’s fast-pitch history in June, 2008. The Raleigh, N.C. native led the Eagles to 29-25 (14-10) record in her first season becoming just the first Georgia Southern coach to post a winning record in their first season. Johnson guided the Eagles to their fourth straight championship game appearance in the SoCon Tournament. After dropping the first game of the tournament GSU won four straight games to advance to the championship game. The Eagles had nonconference highlights as well including snapping Georgia Tech’s two year home nonconference win streak with a 6-5 win (Mar 24) and taking College World Series participant #8 Georgia to extra innings. Robyne Siliga was named player of the week for her performance in the Georgia Tech series. Siliga belted a three run homer over the left field fence to give the Eagles a 6-4 lead over the Yellow Jackets. Under Johnson’s tutelage GSU led the conference in batting average (.293) and slugging percentage (.435) enroute to a fourth place finish in the Southern Conference. Helped Marie Fogle earn Freshman of the Year and First Team All-Conference honors after starting the season 0 for 11. The Rincon native turned it around and hit .344 the rest of the season. In all, six players were named all-conference, Brianna Streetmon, Nina Iduate, Marie Fogle, Amanda Hall, Sam Russo and Megen Smith. Hanna Ennis joined Fogle on the AllFreshman Team after hitting .299 in 54 starts. The Eagles made significant accomplishments in the classroom as well as on the field. Amanda Glover, Kristan Glover, Jordyn Nail and Sam Russo were named to the President’s list during the spring semester. Seven more Eagles were named to the Dean’s
list and in all 75 percent of the team earned a 3.0 or better during the spring semester. “We are excited that Maggie accepted our offer to become head coach,” said Athletics Director Sam Baker. “We liked the experience she gained under very successful Division I head coaches in her time at Radford. For her youth she brings a great deal of experience to the program. We feel like she is inheriting a solid softball program and we feel that she can continue on that path of success.” Johnson comes to Statesboro after five successful seasons at Radford University where she oversaw the development of the Highlanders’ hitters, coordinated travel, served as director of the Mickey Dean Softball Camps and supervised recruiting.

The Highlanders went 200-121 in her five seasons as an assistant coach, a .605 winning percentage, and set a new school record for wins in each of the past four years. Last season’s team posted a 46-15 record which included winning streaks of 16 and 10 games. Radford hitters thrived under Johnson’s guidance. As a group they set a new home run record four consecutive seasons, including 57 in 2008. Last season they broke the batting average (.307) and slugging percentage (.486) marks for the second straight year and posted a new on base percentage (.361) record that has held up for 12 years. Individually, Vicki Madden led the Big South and broke the freshman home run (11) and slugging percentage (.689) records. Her classmate Shannon Keefe was second all-time freshman wise with 10 round trippers and a .675 slugging percentage.
Head Coach Maggie Johnson A year earlier in 2007 under Johnson, RU had what was a banner season at the plate as several Highlanders improved on their previous season’s numbers and numerous individual and team hitting records were broken. The Highlanders set school records in home runs (48), batting average (.297), hits (554), doubles (98), runs (320) and slugging percentage (.449). Along with all the team records, individual marks were obtained. Ashley Carlson (92) and Cassie Rhodes (81) recorded the top two hit totals in school history. Ashley Taylor tied the single-season home run (12) mark and Rhodes tied the single-season triples (7) record. In 2006, Radford shattered the home run record (42), reaching 40-plus round trippers for the first time in school history. The Highlanders also batted .262, the highest since 1998. Prior to 2006, no Radford team had hit more than two round trippers in a game. The Highlanders broke the record three times during the month of March, culminating with a five-home run effort against Georgetown on March 25, 2006. Two of those came off the bat of Ashley Taylor, tying a 10year old single-game record that had only been done twice before. They also set the single-game grand slam record, blasting two at Virginia Tech, on March 1, 2006.
Johnson was a four-year starter at first base for UNC Wilmington from 19972001. While at UNCW, she hit .325 as a senior and was named All-Southern Conference Second Team. She was also tabbed to the All-Tournament team as a junior. As a senior for the Seahawks, she set the school’s career record for home runs. She currently ranks as the alltime leader in putouts and fifth in RBI. Johnson entered the coaching profession in 2002 as an assistant coach at Pender High School in Burgaw, N.C. While at Pender, she was the batting coach and worked with the infielders, helping the team to the state 3-A playoffs for the first time in school history. After her stint at Pender, Johnson returned to school, earning her Master’s of Education in Counseling from Boston University in May of 2003. She graduated from UNCW in 2001 with Bachelor of Arts in Psychology.

Assistant Coaches
liz beirne Assistant Coach Second Year Olivet Nazarene, 2004
Liz Beirne begins her second season as assistant coach for Eagle softball. She works primarily with the pitching staff and in recruiting and travel. She joined the staff after a one-year stint at Tennessee State University.
maria laurato Graduate Assistant Coach Second Year Georgia Southern, 2007
Maria Laurato returned to the Georgia Southern softball program in 2009 and currently serves as a Graduate Assistant coach.
Beirne helped mold pitcher Brianna Streetmon into one of the best in the Southern Conference. After starting only two games her freshman year, Streetmon became the Eagles’ ace going 17-10 with a 1.95 ERA and striking out 124 opposing batters in 2009. Streetmon was named the pitcher of week twice, pitcher of the month twice, All-SoCon First Team, Pitcher of the Year, All-Tournament, Most Outstanding Player and NFCA All-Region last season.
Laurato, a four-year letterwinner for the Eagles from 2004-07, will assist with the infielders and hitting. The Eagles led the SoCon in hitting (.293) and slugging (.435) in 2009. Laurato assisted head coach Maggie Johnson in developing AllFreshman Hanna Ennis. Ennis hit .299 in 54 starts and committed only six errors.
Beirne also helped the Georgia Southern pitching staff hold Appalachian State’s Katie Boyd, who entered the series hitting above .500, to one hit in the series. Overall the Eagles staff ranked fourth in the SoCon with a 3.15 ERA and led the conference in wins (29).
The 2004 Southern Conference Freshman of the Year, Laurato ranks as one of the top players in school history. She is tied for second all-time in career games (240) and third in at bats (716), hits (190) and home runs (17) and fourth in RBI (96). In her rookie campaign she led the league in home runs (6), total bases (82) and slugging percentage (.485), earning her a spot on the All-SoCon Second Team. She followed that up with another all-conference nod in 2005, tied her career high with six homers in 2006 and was tabbed to the SoCon All-Tournament Team in 2007.
Beirne spent the previous two seasons at Liberty University as a graduate assistant coach in charge of pitching and academic progress.
Laurato helped the Eagles to their first NCAA Tournament appearance in 2006 and a spot in the SoCon Tournament title game in 2007.
In her first year at Liberty, two pitchers recorded 16 wins, marking only the second time the university had two 15-game winners on the same staff. In addition, during the 2006 season, the pitching staff set a school record with 351 strikeouts, surpassing the previous record of 291, and the team ERA improved from 3.08 in 2005 to 2.44. Beirne, a graduate of Olivet Nazarene University (Ill.), earned her Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 2004. As a standout pitcher at Olivet, she accumulated a 74-26 career record in the circle, including 32 shutouts. In 2003, Beirne helped lead Olivet to a third place finish at the NAIA national tournament and a team record 61 wins, posting a personal record of 29-7 with a 1.61 ERA. Beirne was selected to the 2003 National Christian Colleges Athletic Association All-American first team. She followed that up with a 21-win campaign in 2004 and again led Olivet to an impressive 51-17 overall record and was an All-Chicago Collegiate Athletic Conference selection, as well as an NCCAA All-Tournament team member.
