RAC Aquatics Center

Aquatics Center at the Recreation Activities Center

The Georgia Southern swimming & diving program officially moved to its new home, the pristine Aquatics Center at the Recreation Activity Center, in January, 2007. The Eagles christened the facility on Saturday, October 20, 2007 when they defeated Southeastern Conference opponent Vanderbilt 12089. The Eagles improved to 10-1 all-time at the RAC during the 2008-09 season. GSU’s Campus Recreation and Intramural Department took on the $31,860,000 expansion project in May 2005 to add 120,000 additional square feet to the recreational facility, 6,150 of which are dedicated to the indoor pool. The indoor facility features the 11-lane competition pool, a 30-person whirlpool, offices for the coaches and Aquatics Center staff, a separate locker room for the swimming & diving team and a wet conference room available for team meetings. Temporary seating is brought in to fill the natatorium at home meets, while the surrounding glass walls allow additional spectators to observe from the exterior. The outdoor facility boasts an additional whirlpool and a leisure pool. Daktronics provided the swimming & diving program with a newly purchased, state-of-the-art scoreboard. Posted on the west wall just above the coaches’ offices, the eight-lane scoreboard provides spectators with event and heat information along with live timing. Also featured on the board are the current record times for the particular event in session, final placement for each event/heat and the running score for each team.

GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY

This is Georgia Southern Georgia Southern University’s tradition spans more than a century. Among the red brick buildings and ancient oaks that line the campus is a University geared towards equipping its students with the knowledge and skills they will need in a very modern and global society. Today Georgia Southern provides a unique educational experience where students are able to take advantage of all of the benefits of a large university without sacrificing the personal touches of a smaller college.

2009-10 Swimming & Diving

TRADITION LIVES HERE

When you drive through the main campus entrance, you are following a path more than 100 years old. Founded in 1906, Georgia Southern’s now sprawling nearly 700 acre campus began as three red brick buildings surrounding a vast lawn known as Sweetheart Circle. As they did more than a century ago, students still flock to Sweetheart Circle to relax in the sun, spend time with friends, or catch up on their studies. Tradition lives at Georgia Southern and it is woven into the very foundation of the

6

University. The Statesboro summer is the perfect backdrop for the University President’s annual watermelon cutting. In the fall, the Homecoming Parade crosses campus and still winds around historic Sweetheart Circle making it a memorable parade for students, faculty, staff, alumni and the community. Football players arrive to their home games in the same school buses used more than a quarter of a century ago by the University’s fledgling team. And in May when the moment comes for students

Georgia Southern

to become alumni, an eagle flies over the graduates as their years at Georgia Southern come to a close. The traditions of this classic University are the kinds of moments that make the Georgia Southern experience one students cherish for a lifetime.

LARGE SCALE

Georgia Southern University’s commitment to educational excellence continues to be lauded by some of the most prestigious publications in the country. The 2009 edition of America’s Best Colleges, published by U.S. News and World Report, included Georgia Southern in the national university category. The University was one of only 262 American universities, both public and private, in that category. Kiplinger’s named Georgia Southern to its “Top 100 Best Values in Public Colleges” list in the fall of 2008. And, the Princeton Review named the University’s College of Business Administration to its list of the “Best 296 Business Schools.” The University’s growth and achievement has led to its being designated as a Carnegie/Doctoral Research University. This designation further elevates the University as an institution recognized for excellence. The College of Information Technology, the only one of its kind in the southeast United States, is one of only 10 universities in the world to teach the cutting-edge technology of virtualization on VM software. In addition, the College is one of only a select few in the country to offer SAP certification

as part of its degree program. This means students will graduate with cutting-edge knowledge and a competitive advantage the vast majority of Information Technology graduates—and even many professionals— do not have, and will save their employers thousands of dollars in training costs. Georgia Southern University’s College of Education claims numerous Georgia Teachers of the Year and recently one of its alumni was named the Metlife National Principal of the Year. The College also obtained accreditation by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related

7

Education Programs (CACREP) in the three specialty areas of community counseling, school counseling and student affairs. Georgia Southern is now the only institution in Georgia to be CACREP accredited in the area of student affairs, and the only one in southeast Georgia CACREP accredited in community counseling and school counseling.

GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY Faculty members from the biology department in the Allen E. Paulson College of Science and Technology were recently awarded a $2.3 million National Science Foundation grant to promote the teaching of molecular biology to students in Georgia’s schools. Faculty, staff and students are also working on projects involving bio-fuels and wind energy. The past 10 years have marked the single largest period of growth in the University’s history. A record number of students now attend Georgia Southern, and record numbers of outstanding students are applying to join their ranks. More than 10,000 people applied to Georgia Southern for the Fall 2009 semester, and final enrollment numbers are expected to set a new record.

SMALL FEEL

While progress brings change, one thing that has not changed is Georgia Southern’s commitment to its students. For decades, the University’s hallmark has been its dedication to remaining an institution centered on its students. The University has a low student/ teacher ratio, and faculty members often work with students one on one. At Georgia Southern, our students appreciate learning in small groups where professors know their names. Even with nearly 18,000 students on campus, students feel at home seeing familiar faces when walking through campus. Many undergraduate students enjoy having the opportunity to work on research projects led by faculty members. Additionally, both students and parents appreciate the classic main-street community of Statesboro that features numerous amenities, shopping and dining options.

EDUCATION FOR A LIFETIME

Whether a student is a new high school graduate or a professional deciding to return to the University for an advanced or online degree, Georgia Southern has numerous programs and options for students in every stage of life. The University’s College of Graduate Studies is seeing unprecedented growth in its programs. An increasing number of students are also opting for online classes. During the spring 2009 commencement ceremony, a record number of graduates received online

The University’s Dublin Center and the Coastal Georgia Center in Savannah take the Georgia Southern classroom experience to students outside of Statesboro. The College of Business Administration even offers an MBA program that allows professionals to earn their master’s without leaving Savannah.

BUILDING FOR THE FUTURE

Imagine a college residence hall with suite and apartment-style living, a shopping area and a food court. That on-campus living experience became reality at Georgia Southern with the opening of Centennial Place. As home to 1,001 students, Centennial Place is setting a new standard in oncampus living.

Georgia Southern

The 17-acre center is one of only a select few in the nation to be located in the heart of a major university campus.

Several key facilities at the University recently celebrated expansions and renovations. A four-year, $22.75 million dollar project to expand and renovate the Zach S. Henderson Library tripled the size of the facility. Today it provides students and faculty with a state-of-the-art facility for research and study. The $7.8 million dollar renovation and extension of the Foy Building added 3,599 square feet of space. Foy’s renovation includes a major enhancement to the outstanding Carol A. Carter Recital Hall. The Wetland Preserve at Georgia Southern University’s Center for Wildlife Education and the Lamar Q Ball, Jr. Raptor Center opened to the public this past spring. The 12-acre addition includes a small pond and capture basin that houses a beaver lodge, a cypress pond that will be home to a variety of wading birds like herons and egrets, and a waterfowl pond.

REACHING OUT TO THE COMMUNITY AND THE WORLD

Georgia Southern students have more opportunity than ever to study alongside others from countries all over the world. Both the number of students coming to Georgia Southern from other countries and Georgia Southern students studying abroad has grown steadily over the last decade. The international experience is not limited to study. During spring break 2009, more than 100 Georgia Southern students traveled the world volunteering. They helped build a medical clinic in the Bahamas, volunteered with orphans in Honduras and worked alongside the world famous Bogside Artists refurbishing their political murals in Northern Ireland. Closer to home, students spend hundreds of hours every year volunteering in the Bulloch County area through greek organizations, service clubs, and the Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement. Georgia Southern students learn that

9

service to others is always time well spent. The University works to better the community every day. The College of Health and Human Sciences is partnering with the Bulloch County Health Department to curb childhood obesity. Preventing disease and bettering the quality of life for people at risk of serious health problems is a focus of the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health. And the psychology department in the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences recently expanded the services at its psychology clinic to include children. Every day someone, somewhere in the world is touched by the work of a Georgia Southern student, alumni, staff, or faculty member—making the reach of this University truly global.

Brooks A. Keel, Ph.D. was named the 12th President of Georgia Southern University on October 26, 2009 and will assume office on January 1, 2010. Prior to joining Georgia Southern, Keel had served as the Vice Chancellor for Research and Economic Development, and Professor of Biological Sciences, at Louisiana State University (LSU) since 2006. In addition, he coordinated the work of more than 1,300 faculty involved in approximately 2,000 sponsored research projects, and oversaw the areas of LSU’s budget that dealt with $156 million in externally funded grants and programs. Prior to his appointment at Louisiana State University, Keel was a professor in the Department of Biomedical Sciences and Associate Vice President for Research at Florida State University, Tallahassee, from 2002-2006. His professional career began in 1985 at the University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita, where he served in a variety of positions including the Daniel K. Sam Baker began his tenure as Georgia Southern Athletics Director in January 1996, and in his 14 years has taken the Eagles to unprecedented growth and success, emphasizing ‘Rings and Diplomas’, making sure every student-athlete has a chance to win a championship ring and earn a diploma. Under Baker’s direction, the athletics department has now captured 27 Southern Conference championships and made 22 appearances in NCAA postseason play, including back-to-back NCAA FCS national titles in 1999 and 2000. A perennial power on the national stage, Eagle Football has accounted for seven of the SoCon titles, eight of the NCAA playoff appearances (Division I FCS) and two of the nation’s-leading six FCS national championships during Baker’s tenure. Baker makes sure all coaches and staff emphasize the student in student-athlete. Georgia Southern continues to make progress in the Academic Progress Rate (APR). Twelve of the 15 programs improved their APR score from 2005-06 to 2006-07. Last year the Eagles saw five sports programs scored a perfect 1,000 - the highest total ever since APR was implemented. Last spring Georgia Southern Athletics had 173 student-athletes earned at least a 3.0 GPA, including 37 that recorded a perfect 4.0. Under Baker’s direction, numerous student-athletes have earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors and five have gone on to earn Academic AllAmerica distinction. Over the last decade facility improvements have been a main focal point of Baker’s efforts. Last spring, phase two of the softball stadium was completed with the building of stadium seating, a locker room and public facilities. During the 2007-08 year work phase one of the softball stadium complex was completed. Aesthetic changes to the north concourse at Paulson Stadium in summer 2008 matched the improvements made the previous season on the south side. The Gene Bishop Field House opened in fall 2006, providing the home and visiting team with new locker rooms and a social meeting place upstairs for Athletic Foundation members. Those improvements add to the growing list of enhancements that makes Georgia Southern stand out among its football peers as having the best facilities in the country. That same year the Bennett-Ramsey Golf Center was completed. The new building provides Eagle Golf with one of the top all-around practice facilities in all of the NCAA Division I. During the 2004-05 academic year, work was completed on: the renovation of J. I. Clements Baseball Stadium, the construction of a Track/ Soccer Stadium, renovations to Iron Works (Georgia Southern’s strength and conditioning center) and Men’s Basketball Locker Rooms (donated by Michael and Katrina Curry). In addition, other team locker rooms, sports medicine treatment center, equipment room, and coaches’ offices in Hanner Fieldhouse have undergone renovation. Baker has also served as the driving force behind the Dan J. Parrish, Sr., Football Building (completed in 2000) and the Troy Cowart Building (home to the Athletic Foundation and GSU Ticket Office). Additionally, Baker has been active in his service to the Southern Conference and the NCAA. From May 2000 to May 2002, he served as chair of the SoCon Athletics Directors Association. For all his work, in June 2009 Baker was named NACDA Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year for the Football Championship Subdivision’s Southeast Region. Baker, a native of Front Royal, Virginia, joined the Georgia Southern management team after five years as Director of the College Football Marketing Corporation, a subsidiary of the College Football Association (CFA). Baker’s responsibilities with the CFA included securing title sponsorship for and administration of its “Promise of Tomorrow” scholarship program. A four-year agreement with Hitachi awarded $1.3 million in scholarships to aid individuals involved in intercollegiate football with the means to pursue careers in the field of education. From 1986-90, he was associate athletic director for financial development at Vanderbilt, where he oversaw the National Commodore Club. In the two years before moving to Nashville, Baker was associate athletic director for external affairs at the University of Oregon, the institution where he served as director of athletic marketing from January 1983 to May 1984. Baker entered the field of intercollegiate athletics at the College of William & Mary, where he spent seven years (1976-82) as director of athletic promotions. Baker holds a 1976 master’s degree in Sports Administration from Ohio University and a 1974 B. A. in Communication Arts from James Madison University. He and his wife of 33 years, Ann, are the parents of three children: Zeb, Elizabeth Ann and Josie.

conferences and has received approval from the NCAA for membership as a Division I conference.

“The best thing about the formation of the conference is that it is very deep, which will bring a lot of exposure to both the conference and Georgia Southern swimming & diving,” said GSU head swimming & diving coach Nathan Kellogg. “We get to swim with teams that are already within the SoCon, like Charleston and Davidson, that are big regional contenders, and that will surely reinforce rivalries between the programs,” added Kellogg. “We always swim well against one another, so we expect it will produce nothing but good things.” The CCSA has 12 total members – 12 women’s swimming & diving teams and six men’s swimming and diving programs. The charter members of the CCSA in women’s swimming are Campbell (A-Sun), College of Charleston (SoCon), Davidson (SoCon), Florida A&M (MEAC), Florida Gulf Coast (A-Sun), Gardner-Webb (A-Sun), Georgia Southern (SoCon), Howard (MEAC), North Carolina A&T (MEAC), North Florida (A-Sun), Radford (Big South) and VMI (Big South). The six schools that comprise the CCSA men’s swimming members are College of Charleston, Davidson, Florida A&M, Gardner-Webb, Howard and VMI. The first-ever CCSA inaugural Conference Championship was held on Feb. 21-23, 2008 in Huntersville, N.C. Davidson claimed the first-ever women’s championships, while College of Charleston claimed the men’s title.

Head Coach Nathan Kellogg Also in 2007, Eagles sophomore divers Nikki Hutchison and Katie Creighton were awarded with NEC Diver of the Week honors on three difference occasions, and freshman Mackenzie Garrot was named NEC Outstanding Rookie of the Meet. Garrot took first in both the 100 and 200 breast stroke at the NEC Championships in 2007. Freshman Courtney Martz had an impressive rookie season under Kellogg earning NEC honors in the 50 freestyle, 100 free, 200 free relay and the 400 free relay. In fact, 11 members of the Swimming and Diving program were selected to the All-NEC Team for their accomplishments in the pool.

Nathan Kellogg

Head Coach George Mason, 2004 6th Year Nathan Kellogg has led the Georgia Southern swimming and diving program to one of its most successful eras in school history. Practically the whole record book has been rewritten under his tenure. The Eagles set 17 records at the CCSA Championships last season and will look to continue building on that success in the future. Georgia Southern’s success continued in the classroom where they were ranked 19th in the fall semester with a 3.19 GPA among Division I swimming and diving programs. The Eagles improved on that GPA and ranked 13th in the spring semester with a 3.45 GPA. Kellogg has led a resurgence of the Eagles’ swimming and diving program since taking charge of the program. In Kellogg’s five seasons at the controls, his teams have a combined overall record of 38-21 to go along with four consecutive winning seasons. Kellogg enters the 2009-2010 season ranked second in school history in total wins, trailing only Scott Farmer (who notched 65 dual-meet victories with the Eagles) on the all-time chart. Kellogg is also ranked second behind Farmer with a .644 winning percentage. Last season was a record-breaking year for the Eagles. The Eagles broke 17 school records at the CCSA Championships and finished in third place. Kellogg has continued to preach the importance of academics as 16 members of the Eagles’ program were named to the CCSA All-Academic Team during the 2008-09 season for maintaining a 3.2 GPA or better in the classroom. Caroline Bevillard and Courtney Martz led the way in the classroom for the Eagles, both recording 4.0 GPAs.

During the 2006-07 season, Kellogg led the Eagles to a 6-5 overall record to go along with a program best second place finish at the Northeastern Conference Championships. Kellogg originally came to Georgia Southern to serve as an assistant coach, but quickly moved up the coaching ranks serving as interim head coach for one season, before being named Georgia Southern’s head coach in June 2005. He is currently certified as a Water Safety Instructor and is a member of the College Swim Coach’s Association of America (CSCAA), American Swim Coach’s Association (ASCA), and USA Swimming. Kellogg graduated from George Mason in May 2004 with a degree in communications. He is currently pursuing his master’s degree from Georgia Southern in Athletic Administration.

In addition to all the team accomplished, the Georgia Southern squads have racked up numerous individual honors under Kellogg’s leadership. Last season Katie Creighton earned CCSA Diver of the Week honors and Lauren Parr, Courtney Martz and Ali Campbell all received CCSA Swimmer of the Week honors. The 2007-08 season was one of the best for the Eagles. They registered the most wins in program history with a 12-1 record, which included a 9-1 conference mark. Kellogg’s unit went a perfect 9-0 at the newly constructed Aquatics Center at the Recreation Activities Center (RAC), broke five school records and earned a fourth place finish at the first-ever Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Championships.

2009-10 Swimming & Diving

Six members of the Eagles’ program were named to the NEC Winter Academic Honor Roll in 2007, maintaining a 3.2 GPA or better. Also, 10 Eagles were named to either the President’s or Dean’s List for their accomplishments in the classroom last year under Kellogg’s watchful eye. Since Kellogg has been at the helm of the Eagles ‘program, his swimmers have broken seven school records and four pool records at the Hanner Natatorium.

Season Preview The Georgia Southern swimming and diving program is coming off one of its best finishes in the CCSA Championships and rewrote 17 records in the process.

Georgia Southern returns all three record-setting swimmers in the freestyle. Courtney Martz broke 1994 records in the 50 and 100 free. Martz swam to a time of 23.56 in the 50 free and 51.49 in the 100 Senior Courtney Martz free at the CCSA Championships. Caroline Bevillard broke the 200 free record with a time of 1:52.20. Ali Campbell broke three other freestyle records in the 500 Free (5:00.53), 1000 Free (10:20.93) and 1650 Free (17:08.53).

“Last season was a tremendous step forward for our team. Some of those records have been around since the early ‘90’s, so it shows that big things are possible when our student-athletes dedicate and commit themselves to achieving their goals,” said head coach Nathan Kellogg. The Eagles return 14 letterwinners and add nine newcomers to form the 2009-2010 squad.

The Eagles are looking for more records to fall to senior Lauren Parr. Parr set school records in the 200 Fly (2:06.34), 200 IM (2:07.12) and 400 IM (4:25.75) in her first season with the Eagles. Also returning for their senior year are swimmers Jordyn Pasley, Rachel Sale and Ashley White.

Ali Campbell helped break six school records Junior Ali Campbell last season. She set new school marks in the 500 Free (5:00.53), 1000 Free (10:20.93), 1650 Free (17:08.53), 200 Free Relay (1:34.87), 400 Free Relay (3:27.89) and 800 Free Relay (7:36.51). “Ali has a lot of talent, but she also puts in the work and enjoys training. She can compete in every freestyle event, and I believe she is just scratching the surface of her potential,” said Kellogg. Nathan Kellogg enters his sixth season as head coach and has guided the Eagles to one of their most successful periods in school history. Under his direction the swimming and diving program has recorded winning records in all but one season. Kellogg owns a 44-29 record and ranks second in wins behind Scott Farmer.

“I look for our seniors to put their hearts into their last season. Every year we ask our seniors to lead their teammates, make the most of their final season, and enjoy it,” said Kellogg. “They are a great group to work with and I have no doubts that they will finish knowing they got the most out of their experience as a student-athlete here at Georgia Southern.” Pasley was a member of the 800 Free Relay team that set a new school mark with a time of 7:36.51 at the CCSA Championships. The Eagles open the 2009-2010 season with a four-team meet at Georgia Tech.

In The Classroom and The Community The Eagles also experienced sucess in the classroom last year. Fourteen swimmers made either the President’s or Dean’s List last season. Katelyn Woolfolk was named Swimming & Diving Scholar Athlete of the Year after being named to the President’s List in both the fall and spring semesters. Joining Woolfolk on the president’s list was Caroline Bevillard, Courtney Martz and Rachel Sale. All three made the list in both semesters. The swimming and diving team as a whole earned distinction and were ranked 19th with a 3.19 GPA for the fall semseter among Division I programs. The Eagles improved on that GPA for the spring semester and nearly cracked the top 10, recording a 3.45 GPA in the spring.

The swimming and diving team saw a tremendous turnout for the American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life event, held at the Kiwanis Ogeechee Fairgrounds in Statesboro. Relay For Life offers everyone within a community the opportunity to participate in the fight against cancer. Teams take turns walking or running around the fairgrounds. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Relays are an overnight event, up to 24 hours in length. “We’ve done this for a number of years now,” said GSU swimming & diving coach Nathan Kellogg. “Everyone knows someone that has been affected by Cancer. It’s great to see not only Georgia Southern but also the entire Bulloch community stand together supporting such a great cause.” The swimming and diving team joined over 100 student-athletes from 15 of Georgia Southern’s varsity sports in supporting the fight against cancer.
