Aquatics Center at the Recreation Activities Center

The Georgia Southern swimming & diving program officially moved to its new home, the pristine Aquatics Center at the Recreation Activity Center, in January, 2007. The Eagles christened the facility on Saturday, October 20, 2007 when they defeated Southeastern Conference opponent Vanderbilt 12089. The Eagles improved to 9-0 all-time at the RAC during the 2007-08 season. GSU’s Campus Recreation and Intramural Department took on the $31,860,000 expansion project in May 2005 to add 120,000 additional square feet to the recreational facility, 6,150 of which are dedicated to the indoor pool. The indoor facility features the 10 lane competition pool, a 30-person whirlpool, offices for the coaches and Aquatics Center staff, a separate locker room for the swimming & diving team and a wet conference room available for team meetings. Temporary seating is brought in to fill the natatorium at home meets, while the surrounding glass walls allow additional spectators to observe from the exterior. The outdoor facility boasts an additional whirlpool and a leisure pool. Daktronics provided the swimming & diving program with a newly purchased, state-of-the-art scoreboard. Posted on the west wall just above the coaches’ offices, the eight-lane scoreboard provides spectators with event and heat information along with live timing. Also featured on the board are the current record times for the particular event in session, final placement for each event/heat and the running score for each team.

The exciting opportunities of a large University. The personal feel of a smaller college. This is how Georgia Southern University is differentiating itself from other major universities across the country and around the world. From your first day on campus to a return trip with your family to an Eagle football game as an alumnus, Georgia Southern is a special place. Classified a doctoral research institution, Georgia Southern University is the largest and most comprehensive research institution in its region. A residential campus of nearly 17,000 students, Georgia Southern has one of the most diverse campuses in the country, enrolling students from nearly every U.S. state and more than 86 countries. This spectrum of backgrounds, interests and talents contribute to making the University the perfect place for academic, cultural and social pursuits. Georgia Southern University is recognized for offering an outstanding undergraduate and graduate education for its students, featuring a curriculum and applied research centered on student success. Our focus is on our students and what they value: a well-rounded collegiate atmosphere; a faculty whose first priority is teaching; and a safe, attractive campus environment that encourages knowledge, critical thinking, discovery and personal growth. Georgia Southern University offers more than 120 degree programs at the baccalaureate, masters and doctoral levels through eight colleges: Business Administration, Education, Health and Human Sciences, Allen E. Paulson College of Science and Technology, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Information Technology, the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health and the Jack N. Averitt College of Graduate Studies. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the institution and its programs have earned special accreditation from professional and academic associations that set standards in their fields. The University is continuing to expand its graduate offerings to include additional master’s and doctoral programs delivered on campus, online or through a combination of the two. Founded in 1906, Georgia Southern lays claim to being one of the most beautiful campuses in the state. Comprising more than 690 acres, the classic college campus features gently rolling lawns, scenic lakes and soaring pines. The historic core of campus is the quintessential college portrait – Georgian-style red brick buildings with white columns around a sweeping, treelined circular drive. In fact, in the past year, the campus has become a popular location for movie projects. The past 10 years have represented one of the most active periods of construction on campus. The University has nearly doubled the size of the Zach S. Henderson Library and recently opened the Center for Art & Theatre featuring art galleries and a black box theatre where students and professional artists practice their crafts. One of the most visible additions to campus that began in June 2008 is the addition of a new state-of-the-art housing facility

who have benefited from the Georgia Southern advantage. To help them stay in touch with fellow alums, graduates may become members of the Georgia Southern Alumni Association. The Association offers an array of services to maintain that Georgia Southern connection including the Georgia Southern magazine and the sponsorship of Eagle Club events, affinity groups and meetings throughout the year. Another way to show Eagle pride and strengthen Georgia Southern for the future is through ongoing financial support. The Georgia Southern University Foundation and Southern Boosters help raise funds for academic and athletics programs. These donations, along with money raised by the University’s annual development efforts, provide much-needed funding to enhance the Georgia Southern experience for current and future students. More information about Georgia Southern is available on the Web at www.georgiasouthern.edu.

Zach S. Henderson Library and recently opened the Center for Art & Theatre featuring art galleries and a black box theatre where students and professional artists practice their crafts. One of the most visible additions to campus that began in June 2008 is the addition of a new state-of-the-art housing facility named Centennial Place. Featuring apartment-style living, retail shops and wireless Internet access, this new residence complex will redefine college living and will house nearly 1,000 students when complete in Fall 2009. Georgia Southern conducts applied research and engages in public partnerships that seek solutions to local, state and regional challenges. Research varies from probing the genetic chemistry of disease-spreading parasites and answering today’s most pressing public health questions to developing new methods to improve public school students’ achievement in math and science. Centers for business research and development, rural health, international studies, public affairs, teacher education, rehabilitation technology, water policy and biostatistics involve teams of faculty experts, working in conjunction with undergraduate and graduate students, to tackle community and regional concerns. The University extends educational opportunities to citizens throughout the state via graduate centers located throughout the state of Georgia. As a center of learning and discovery, the University has a unique array of public outreach facilities – Botanical Garden, Center for Wildlife Education and Lamar Q. Ball Jr. Raptor Center, Georgia Southern Museum, Nessmith-Lane Continuing Education Building and the Performing Arts Center, which features an 825-seat theatre. Georgia Southern is recognized for a nationally competitive athletics program. The University’s 15 Division I teams compete in the Southern Conference. Across-the-board commitment to excellence has resulted in an unprecedented six NCAA FCS (formerly I-AA) football national championships and NCAA tournament participation in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, golf, women’s tennis, softball, track & field and volleyball. Nowhere is the commitment to academics and athletics more visible than in the University’s Rings & Diplomas initiative. Our goal is to not only recruit outstanding athletes, but outstanding students. In short, we want our student-athletes to win championships and earn their degrees. This year’s graduates joined more than 75,000 Eagle alumni

Iron Works

Hidden behind the spotlight of Georgia Southern’s athletic success may be the most important component of why there is a beacon to begin with. Away from the playing fields, the cameras, and the excitement exists Iron Works, the heart of GSU’s strength and conditioning for all 15 intercollegiate teams. There, athletes enhance their physical capabilities through the training leadership of certified coaches, and the end results are usually displayed in the win column. Built in 1989, the recent Iron Works renovation included the addition of offices and the total rehab of the entrance and interior. Nearly $50,000 worth of new weight equipment including multisquat racks, two Olympic platforms complete with bumpers plates and bars, free weights, hammer machines and body weight scale were added. The biggest addition is a Mondo surface track 9x60 feet running down the middle of Iron Works for warm-up and agility work. Already at 5,400 square feet, the addition of nearly 1,000 square feet - including storage areas and modernized reception area - makes Iron Works a premier workout facility. Georgia Southern head strength and conditioning coach Tom Melton re-joined the GSU staff with the dual title of assistant athletics director/athletic performance in the spring of 2004. Assistant strength and conditioning coach Dave Jenkerson was hired in February 2007 to oversee the strength training for the Eagle football program. Thanks to donations received from former Georgia Southern football athletes, Iron Works is also home to two Vertimax Jump Trainers.

Eagle Athletics have enjoyed extraordinary achievement across the board over the course of Baker’s tenure in Statesboro. Georgia Southern football has reasserted its national profile by winning seven Southern Conference titles, making eight NCAA I-FCS playoff appearances in the last 11 years, and capturing the 1999 and 2000 NCAA I-FCS National Championships. In all, the Eagle and Lady Eagle programs have won 26 SoCon championships and made 20 appearances in NCAA Championships under Baker’s leadership. Since 2000, facility improvements have been a main focal point of Baker’s efforts. During the 2007-08 year work phase one of the softball stadium complex was completed and aesthetic changes to the north concourse at Paulson Stadium matched the improvements made the previous season on the south side. Those improvements add to the growing list of enhancements that makes Georgia Southern stand out among its football peers as having the best facilities in the country. The department recently completed construction of the Gene Bishop Field House at Paulson Stadium and the Bennett-Ramsey Golf Center. The Bishop Field House adds to the outstanding football facilities at Georgia Southern. The Bennett-Ramsey Golf Center ranks among the top practice facilities in all of the NCAA Division I. During the 2004-05 academic year, work was completed on: the renovation of J. I. Clements Baseball Stadium, the construction of a Track/Soccer Stadium, significant upgrades in the Iron Works (Georgia Southern’s strength and conditioning center) and Men’s Basketball Locker Rooms (donated by Michael and Katrina Curry). In addition, other team locker rooms, sports medicine treatment center, equipment room, and coaches’ offices in Hanner Fieldhouse have undergone renovation. Baker has also served as the driving force behind the Dan J. Parrish, Sr., Football Building (completed in 2000) and the Troy Cowart Building (home to Southern Boosters and the GSU Ticket Office). Academics are a high priority for Baker and the entire athletics department. Twelve of the 15 programs improved their APR score from 2005-06 to 200607, including men’s tennis which scored a perfect 1,000. The only reason those three programs failed to improve on their numbers is because they scored a perfect 1,000 the previous academic year. During the 2007-08 academic year 141 student-athletes passed 24 credit hours and posted a 3.0 cumulative GPA, earning a spot on the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll. Additionally, Baker has been active in his service to the Southern Conference and the NCAA. From May 2000 to May 2002, he served as chair of the SoCon Athletics Directors Association. In January 2007, he began a term on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee. Baker, a native of Front Royal, Virginia, joined the Georgia Southern management team after five years as Director of the College Football Marketing Corporation, a subsidiary of the College Football Association (CFA). Baker’s responsibilities with the CFA included securing title sponsorship for and administration of its “Promise of Tomorrow” scholarship program. A four-year agreement with Hitachi awarded $1.3 million in scholarships to aid individuals involved in intercollegiate football with the means to pursue careers in the field of education. From 1986-90, he was associate athletic director for financial development at Vanderbilt, where he oversaw the National Commodore Club. In the two years before moving to Nashville, Baker was associate athletic director for external affairs at the University of Oregon, the institution where he served as director of athletic marketing from January 1983 to May 1984. Baker entered the field of intercollegiate athletics at the College of William & Mary, where he spent seven years (1976-82) as director of athletic promotions. Baker holds a 1976 master’s degree in Sports Administration from Ohio University and a 1974 B. A. in Communication Arts from James Madison University. He and his wife of 32 years, Ann, are the parents of three children: Zeb (a doctoral student at Emory), Elizabeth Ann (Foster Care Review Board Coordinator for the Governor’s Office in South Carolina) and Josie (junior at the University of Alabama).

2008-09 Preview

The swimming and diving program seeks to build on an outstanding first season in the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) and at their home venue the Recreation Activity Center (RAC). Last season the Lady Eagles went 12-1 including a 9-0 home record. They also broke five school records during their first season in CCSA competion. The team returns 15 letterwinners from last year’s team including freshman sensation Ali Campbell who broke the school record in the 1650 yard freestyle event.

Parr will be called upon to make an immediate splash after competing for two seasons at the University of Akron. Laurie Stephens is also transferring in after one season at Brenau University. Nathan Kellogg enters his sixth season as head coach and possesses a career 38-17 record. He has the Lady Eagles in a position to build off their fourth place finish at the first-ever CCSA Championship. Joining Kellogg are two first year assistant coaches. Whitney Hooley joins the staff as an assistant swim coach after completing her collegiate career at Gardner-Webb. She was named all-conference all four years at Gardner-Webb, and won individual championships in 2006 and 2008. Emilie Kluth was named Diving Coach after completing collegiate competition at South Dakota. She holds the school record in 3-meter diving.

The Lady Eagles have five players who are returning for their senior season, including: Kristin Butts, Katie Creighton, Kikki Hutchison, Courtney McCarthy and Katelyn Woolfolk.

2008-09 Swimming & Diving

Kluth will have returning senior divers Katie Creighton and Nikki Hutchison to work with.

Woolfolk won one of Georgia Southern’s four individual conference championships last season, was an all-conference selection and helped set a new school record in the 200 yard freestyle relay.

The swimming and diving team will put their perfect RAC record on the line twice in January with dual meets against conference foes Davidson and Campbell.

Head coach Nathan Kellogg and his staff added six new swimmers to this year’s team including two transfers who will provide experience to the team. Lauren

“The best thing about the formation of the conference is that it is very deep, which will bring a lot of exposure to both the conference and Georgia Southern swimming & diving,” said GSU head swimming & diving coach Nathan Kellogg. “We get to swim with teams that are already within the SoCon, like Charleston and Davidson, that are big regional contenders, and that will surely reinforce rivalries between the programs,” added Kellogg. “We always swim well against one another, so we expect it will produce nothing but good things.” The CCSA has 12 total members – 12 women’s swimming & diving teams and six men’s swimming and diving programs. The charter members of the CCSA in women’s swimming are Campbell (A-Sun), College of Charleston (SoCon), Davidson

Winning Percentage................. .690 (5 years) CCSA Record............................ 9-1 (2007-08) Top Championship Finish........ 2nd/NEC (2006-07)

By any measure, Nathan Kellogg has led Georgia Southern’s swimming & diving program to its most prosperous and successful era in a decade – a trend he hopes to continue into 2008-2009 as he enters his sixth season at the helm of the Eagles program. Kellogg originally came to Georgia Southern to serve as an assistant coach, but quickly moved up the coaching ranks serving as interim head coach for one season, before being named Georgia Southern’s head coach in June 2005. Kellogg has led a resurgence of the Eagles swimming & diving program since taking charge of the program five years ago. In Kellogg’s five seasons at the controls, his teams have a combined overall record of 38-17 to go along with five consecutive winning seasons. Kellogg enters the 2008-2009 season ranked second in school history in total wins, trailing only Scott Farmer (who notched 65 dual-meet victories with the Eagles) on the all-time chart. Kellogg is also ranked second behind Farmer with a .690 winning percentage. Last season under Kellogg, the Eagles registered the most wins in program history with a 12-1 record, which included a 91 conference mark. Kellogg’s unit went a perfect 9-0 at the newly constructed Aquatics Center at the Recreation Activities Center (RAC), broke five school records and earned a fourth place finish at the first-ever Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association (CCSA) Championships. In addition to all the team accomplished, the Georgia Southern squad racked up numerous individual honors under Kellogg’s leadership. The diving unit earned CCSA Diver of the Week awards on four different occasions. Steffi Sheckler, Cassie Smith, Nikki Hutchison and Katie Creighton all received the award during the season. Courtney Martz was twice named CCSA Swimmer of the Week, while Ali Campbell became the first Eagle swimmer to ever earn the award. Equally as impressive, 10 members of the swimming & diving program received CCSA All-Conference accolades for their accomplishments in the pool. Most important, Kellogg has continued to preach the importance of academics as 16 members of the Eagles program were named to the CCSA All-Academic Team during the 2007-08 season for maintaining a 3.2 GPA or better in the classroom. During the 2006-07 season, Kellogg led the Eagles to a 6-5 overall record to go along with a program best second place finish at the Northeastern Conference Championships.

Also in 2007, Eagles sophomore divers Nikki Hutchison and Katie Creighton were awarded with NEC Diver of the Week honors on three difference occasions and freshman Mackenzie Garrot was named NEC Outstanding Rookie of the Meet. Garrot took first in both the 100 and 200 breast stroke at the NEC Championships in 2007. Freshman Courtney Martz had an impressive rookie season under Kellogg earning NEC honors in the 50 freestyle, 100 free, 200 free relay and the 400 free relay. In fact, 11 members of the Swimming and Diving program were selected to the All-NEC Team for their accomplishments in the pool. Six members of the Eagles program were named to the NEC Winter Academic Honor Roll in 2007 maintaining a 3.2 GPA or better. Also, 10 Eagles were named to either the President’s or Dean’s List for their accomplishments in the classroom last year under Kellogg’s watchful eye. Since Kellogg has been at the helm of the Eagles program, his swimmers have broken seven school records and four pool records at the Hanner Natatorium. Kellogg enjoyed a lot of success as a collegiate studentathlete at George Mason University. Kellogg lettered four seasons helping guide the Patriots to a second-place finish in the Colonial Athletic Association Championships. Kellogg also twice advanced to the CAA finals in the 100-yard backstroke. Kellogg’s past coaching experiences include seven years with the Stingrays summer program in his hometown of Sandston, Va. He also has spent the past four summers working for the Skip Kenney International Swim Camp at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Ca and the past three summers coaching at the Bauerle Bulldog Swimming and Diving Camp at the University of Georgia. He is currently certified as a Water Safety Instructor and is a member of the College Swim Coach’s Association of America (CSCAA), American Swim Coach’s Association (ASCA), and USA Swimming. Kellogg graduated from George Mason in May 2004 with a degree in communications. He is currently pursuing his master’s degree from Georgia Southern in Athletic Administration.
