CHAD CALLIHAN Chad Callihan embarks on his fourth year at Georgia Southern carrying with him a 64-37 record after three seasons with the Eagles. Callihan, a former Southern Conference ‘Coach of the Year’, became the eighth volleyball coach in Georgia Southern University history in January 2008 and lead the Eagles to the 2010 Southern Conference Tournament Championship. In just three years at Georgia Southern, Callihan has turned the program around. A program that went 10-21 in 2007 capped the 2009 campaign with a 21-10 record and won the 2010 SoCon Tournament, advancing to the NCAA Tournament for the third time in school history. Callihan helped the Eagles to their best winning percentage in school history (.750) enroute to their first SoCon Title in since 2003. The 2010 team finished with a 27-9 record and were one win short of tying the Eagles’ best mark of 28 victories in 1993. The nine losses was only the second time in Eagle history that a team posted single-digit defeats. Callihan owns a 184-113 career record in nine years as a head coach – four years at Appalachian State University, two at Radford University and three at Georgia Southern. Not only have his teams succeeded on the court, they have done so in the classroom as well. All four of his Mountaineer teams received the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Team Academic Award. The Eagles went 16-18 in Callihan’s first year and witnessed the first conference award honoree since 2006 when Bethany Sanford was named All-Freshman. Sanford joined freshman Kate Van Dyke in 2009 as the first All-SoCon First Team selections since 2005. Van Dyke, who ranked fourth in program history after 2009 with 1,229 assists, also was named All-Freshman. Sanford and Van Dyke both earned SoCon Player of the Week honors during the 2009 campaign. Callihan joined the Eagles after spending the 2007 campaign as an assistant coach at the University of Georgia. He helped with the Bulldogs’ turnaround, turning a 6-25 record in 2006 to a 17-13 overall mark in 2007. Coming from a league school, Callihan was no stranger to

His coaching experience also includes coaching the Yokota Air Base women’s volleyball team in Japan during his four years in the United States Air Force. The squad consisted of former Division I athletes. A member of the AVCA and USA Volleyball, Callihan has worked throughout his career with Special Olympics and setting up free volleyball clinics. facing the Eagles and competition in the Southern Conference before arriving at Georgia Southern. Callihan, who led the Appalachian State Mountaineers for four years, posted a .814 league winning percentage (57-13) during his tenure at the SoCon school. The 2004 SoCon ‘Coach of the Year’, Callihan led the Mountaineers to consecutive North Division championships (2003 and 2004), two regular season runner-up finishes and two appearances in the Tournament Championship match (’04 and 2005). Prior to his time at Appalachian State Callihan worked four years at Radford University, the last two as head coach. In 2001, the Highlanders posted a 24-7 record and captured the Big South Conference regular season title. That year Radford rattled off 23 consecutive victories, the longest winning streak in the nation, and finished a perfect 14-0 in the BSC. The Highlanders were ranked as high as sixth in the East Region. Before taking over the head coaching duties Callihan spent two years as an assistant coach, helping the Highlanders capture two Big South Conference championships and a berth in the 2000 NCAA Tournament. Callihan spent three seasons as the head coach at Radford High School in Radford, Virginia, leading his team to their

CRYSTAL POSKEY Crystal Poskey enters her fourth year as assistant coach with the Eagles, having joined the program in 2008 along with Head Coach Chad Callihan. Poskey comes to GSU after a two-year head coaching stint at Radford University. Taking over a program at Radford that had not won a Big South Conference match since 2003 and had not won more than eight matches in the previous four years, Poskey immediately made a difference. Radford went 9-19 in her first season, the most wins since 2001. She also led RU to four Big South wins. Under Poskey’s direction, the Highlanders improved dramatically in every offensive statistical category, including kills and service aces. RU made a jump of 382 total kills from the previous year and 34 aces from 2005 to 2006. Radford had four players in 2006 that recorded 200 or more kills. Perhaps her greatest influence came in the improvement at the setter position. A former standout setter at Francis Marion, Poskey’s influence helped RU setter Josie Hanners, a standout in her own right, increase her output by nearly 400 assists from 2005 to 2006. Hanners finished the season with 1190 assists, her first season with more than 800 helpers.

A four-year standout at Francis Marion for Jerry Pruitt, Poskey, a setter, was an All-Conference selection in each of her four years. She enjoyed her most prolific season in 1998, earning Peach Belt Player of the Year and Tournament MVP honors. She also collected NCAA South Region and AVCA All-Region accolades while leading her squad to its secondstraight Peach Belt Tournament championship and a berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament. As a player, Poskey played a key role in the Patriots two regular season (1996 and 1998) and tournament (1997 and 1998) Peach Belt titles and an AVCA top-25 national ranking in 1998. After earning her undergraduate degree in biology with a minor in coaching from Francis Marion in 2001, Poskey took a job as the head junior varsity coach at Clarkston High School in Clarkston, Wash. Two years later she accepted a position as head volleyball coach at South Florence High School in Florence, S.C., where she spent two years before taking the Appalachian State job. Poskey is a native of Clarkston, Wash.

Even though Radford was her first stint as a collegiate head coach, Poskey brought a wealth of knowledge and experience into the Highlander program. She was named RU’s ninth head volleyball coach in June of 2006 after serving as an assistant at Appalachian State. While at Appalachian State, Poskey served as the Mountaineer’s recruiting coordinator. She also specialized in helping improve ASU’s setters. Under Poskey’s tutelage, ASU setter Amber Mangrum set school records with 4,408 career assists and 1,544 assists in a season. Poskey also helped out with ASU’s summer volleyball camps, serving as camp director. Chad Callihan and Poskey led the Mountaineers to the 2003 Southern Conference championship, the school’s first since 1995.

HANNER FIELDHOUSE Home to Georgia Southern basketball and volleyball, Hanner Fieldhouse is one of the best venues for collegiate athletics in the country. Completed in 1969, the facility serves as the center of Georgia Southern’s intercollegiate athletics program and is named for the late W.S. “Shep” Hanner, the school’s faculty athletic chairman from 1935 to 1959. Hanner also served at various times as tennis coach, assistant football coach, professor and chairman of the Division of Exercise Sciences. The Fieldhouse, part of the larger Hanner Complex, houses the Health, Physical Education and Professional Studies as well as most of the Eagles coaches’ offices and several team locker rooms. In addition to the main basketball arena, the complex contains a smaller gymnasium, a weight room, fitness rooms, locker rooms and athletic training facilities. During the summer of 1995, the University completed a $500,000 renovation to Hanner Fieldhouse. Wooden bleachers at floor level were replaced with chairback seats and new floor graphics were painted. Outside the arena, the basketball locker rooms and coaches’ offices were also renovated. The court surface was completely refinished in 2003 and most recently, 2010.

THIS IS GEORGIA SOUTHERN.... As the largest and most comprehensive research institution in southeast Georgia, Georgia Southern University continues to set the bar for academic excellence. During the past decade, Georgia Southern has shown growth in size and scope that has led to recognition by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top five most popular universities in the nation. Georgia Southern continues to be one of the top choices in the state for new freshmen and HOPE scholars, with a record enrollment of approximately 20,000 students, celebrating a diverse population from 49 U.S. states and nearly 100 nations from around the world. The University offers more than 115 degree programs at the baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral levels through eight colleges, as well as a variety of online classes in business, education, liberal arts, science, technology and healthcare, including an array of advanced degree programs. Among the magnolias and classic Southern red brick buildings, you will find relaxing parks, lakes and the Pedestrium, a walkway that stretches through the heart of the nearly 700acre campus. During the past decade, almost $300 million in construction and renovation projects have been completed, including state-of-the-art classroom and recreation facilities and a number of modern apartment-style residence halls like the upscale housing at Centennial Place, which includes Cold Stone Creamery, Einstein Bros. Bagel restaurant and more. The University recently celebrated the groundbreaking of a new $37 million Biological Sciences Building that will open in Spring 2013.

As a Carnegie Doctoral-Research University, Georgia Southern’s hallmarks focus on teaching, an increasing emphasis on research and a student-centered approach that give the University the feel of a much smaller private college. Students are at the center of everything Georgia Southern does, and the University has created an environment where students can thrive, learn, and prepare for their future. From the moment students step on campus, they are immediately challenged by the academic curriculum, while also having the opportunity to take part in an incredible amount of activities that rival larger universities. The University Honors Program attracts high-achieving students and the Office of Student Leadership and Civic Engagement encourages students to make leadership a part of their college resumes. Students are engaged in community volunteerism, campus theatre productions, academic organizations and recreational athletics, just to name a few of the opportunities offered in this well-rounded collegiate atmosphere. The University has received recent national recognition from Forbes Magazine and The Princeton Review, setting Georgia Southern apart from its peers. Georgia Southern has once again been recognized as one of America’s Best Colleges and one of the “Best 301 Business Schools” in the nation. The University’s business and nursing programs have also been recognized among 2012’s Best Graduate Schools by U.S. News and World Report. Additionally, Georgia Southern has been recognized as one of Forbes’ top universities in the nation for minority science, technology, engineering and math (STEM).

IRON WORKS STRENGTH AND CONDITIONING Away from the playing fields, the cameras, and the excitement exists Iron Works, the heart of GSU’s strength and conditioning for all 15 intercollegiate teams. There, athletes enhance their physical capabilities through the training leadership of certified coaches, and the ending results are usually displayed in the win column. Built in 1989, the recent Iron Works renovation included the addition of offices and the total rehab of the entrance and interior. Nearly $50,000 worth of new weight equipment including multi-squat racks, two Olympic platforms complete with bumpers plates and bars, free weights, hammer machines and body weight scale were added. The biggest addition is a Mondo surface track 9x60 feet running down the middle of Iron Works for warm-up and agility work. Already at 5,400 square feet, the addition of nearly 1,000 square feet – including storage areas and modernized reception area previously not available – makes Iron Works a premier workout facility. Georgia Southern Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Tom Melton, who re-joined the GSU staff with the dual title of assistant athletics director/athletic performance in the spring of 2004, provides a direct strength training leadership role to the Eagle football program while coordinating and supervising off-season and in-season applications for the remaining 14 GSU teams. Thanks to donations received from former Georgia Southern football athletes, Iron Works is also home to two Vertimax Jump Trainers.

sam baker

director of athletics Building a strong future for the Georgia Southern sports programs in his 16 years as Director of Athletics, Sam Baker has positioned the Eagles for success with new or renovated facilities, a foundation of financial stability and decisions to ensure the best for the studentathlete. An integral component of this ideology is the commitment to “Rings and Diplomas,” as the Athletics Department provides the opportunity for every Georgia Southern student-athlete to win a championship ring and earn a diploma. The emphasis on the “student” in student-athlete is one trademark of the Georgia Southern athletics program as Baker promotes the initiative and continued support for excellence in the classroom. Following the spring semester 2010, 156 student-athletes posted grade point averages of 3.0 or better with all 15 sports teams represented on the list. All 15 also had members of their teams on the Dean’s List for GPAs of 3.5 to 3.99 and 26 student-athletes achieved perfect 4.0 grade point averages for the semester. Numerous student-athletes have earned CoSIDA Academic All-District honors with six named to the prestigious Academic AllAmerica list. The most recent honoree was Eagle softball player Nina Iduate, who was voted to the national first team in June 2010. Continuing to add to the lengthy list of accomplishments for the program, the Athletics Department has now captured 27 Southern Conference championships and made 23 appearances in NCAA postseason play. The most acclaimed is the Eagle Football program, accounting for seven SoCon titles, eight NCAA playoff appearances (Division I FCS) and back-to-back NCAA FCS titles in 1999 and 2000, two of the nation’s-best six FCS national championships, during the Baker tenure. A primary focus of Baker’s efforts has been facility improvements for fans and student-athletes. The second phase of the softball stadium was completed in 2008 with the construction of stadium seating, team locker rooms and public rest rooms. Aesthetic changes to the north concourse at Paulson Stadium in summer 2008 matched the improvements made the previous season on the south side. The Gene Bishop Field House opened in the fall 2006, providing the home and visiting team with new locker rooms and a social meeting place upstairs for Athletic Foundation members. In the same time period, the Bennett-Ramsey Golf Center was completed, providing Eagle Golf with one of the top all-around practice facilities the nation. Building and renovations were completed for several projects including the renovation of J.I. Clements Baseball Stadium, the construction of a Track/Soccer Stadium, renovation and expansion of Iron Works (Georgia Southern’s athletic performance center) and Men’s Basketball Locker Room (donated by Michael and Katrina Curry). In addition, other team locker rooms, sports medicine treatment center, equipment room, and coaches’ offices in Hanner Fieldhouse have undergone renovation and upgrades. Baker also served as the driving force behind the Dan J. Parrish, Sr., Football Building, the Herring Pavilion, football practice field renovation and the Troy Cowart Building (home to the Athletic Foundation and Athletics Ticket Office). As a leader in his profession, Baker has been active in his service to the Southern Conference and the NCAA. From May 2000 to May 2002, he served as chair of the SoCon Athletics Directors Association. As Georgia Southern Athletics Director, he served as a member of the NCAA Special Events, Olympic Liaison and Division I Football Issues Committees. In June 2009, he was honored with recognition as the NACDA Under Armour Athletics Director of the Year for the Football Championship Subdivision’s Southeast Region. Baker, a native of Front Royal, Virginia, joined the Georgia Southern management team after five years as Director of the College Football Marketing Corporation, a subsidiary of the College Football Association (CFA). Baker’s responsibilities with the CFA included securing title sponsorship for and administration of its “Promise of Tomorrow” scholarship program. A four-year agreement with Hitachi awarded $1.3 million in scholarships to aid individuals involved in intercollegiate football with the means to pursue careers in the field of education. From 1986-90, he was associate athletic director for financial development at Vanderbilt, where he oversaw the National Commodore Club. In the two years before moving to Nashville, Baker was associate athletic director for external affairs at the University of Oregon, the institution where he served as director of athletic marketing from January 1983 to May 1984. Baker entered the field of intercollegiate athletics at the College of William & Mary, where he spent seven years (1976-82) as director of athletic promotions. Baker holds a 1976 master’s degree in Sports Administration from Ohio University and a 1974 B. A. in Communication Arts from James Madison University. He and his wife of 35 years, Ann, are the parents of three children: Zeb, Elizabeth Ann and Josie.

J.B. Claiborne is the program’s longest reigning head coach, having led the program for six seasons (1988-1993).

The 2003 squad battled through three five-game matches, a first for an eventual SoCon champ. After rallying from a 2-1 deficit in the opener against Western Carolina, the Eagles battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the semifinal round against Appalachian State. In the finals, GS won the first game over College of Charleston before dropping the next two. After edging out a 32-30 win in game four, the Eagles clinched the match, and the league crown, with a 15-13 game five win.
