GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY Georgia’s Large-Scale, Small Feel Research University
4
The exciting opportunities of a large University. The personal feel of a smaller college. This is how Georgia Southern University is differentiating itself from other major universities across the country and around the world. From your first day on campus to a return trip with your family to an Eagle football game as an alumnus, Georgia Southern is a special place. Classified a doctoral research institution, Georgia Southern University is the largest and most comprehensive research institution in its region. A residential campus of nearly 17,000 students, Georgia Southern has one of the most diverse campuses in the country, enrolling students from nearly every U.S. state and more than 86 countries. This spectrum of backgrounds, interests and talents contribute to making the University the perfect place for academic, cultural and social pursuits. Georgia Southern University is recognized for offering an outstanding undergraduate and graduate education for its students, featuring a curriculum and applied research centered on student success. Our focus is on our students and what they value: a well-rounded collegiate atmosphere; a faculty whose first priority is teaching; and a safe, attractive campus environment that encourages knowledge, critical thinking, discovery and personal growth. Georgia Southern University offers more than 120 degree programs at the baccalaureate, masters and doctoral levels through eight colleges: Business Administration, Education, Health and Human Sciences, Allen E. Paulson College of Science and Technology, Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Information Technology, the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health and the Jack N. Averitt College of Graduate Studies. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, the institution and its programs have earned special accreditation from professional and academic associations that set standards in their fields. The University is continuing to expand its graduate offerings to include additional master’s and doctoral programs delivered on campus, online or through a combination of the two. Founded in 1906, Georgia Southern lays claim to being one of the most beautiful campuses in the state. Comprising more than 690 acres, the classic college campus features gently rolling lawns, scenic lakes and soaring pines. The historic core of campus is the quintessential college portrait – Georgian-style red brick buildings with white columns around a sweeping, treelined circular drive. In fact, in the past year, the campus has become a popular location for movie projects. The past 10 years have represented one of the most active periods of construction on campus. The University has nearly doubled the size of the Zach S. Henderson Library and recently opened the Center for Art & Theatre featuring art galleries and a black box theatre where students and professional artists practice their crafts. One of the most visible additions to campus that began in June 2008 is the addition of a new state-of-the-art housing facility

named Centennial Place. Featuring apartment-style living, retail shops and wireless Internet access, this new residence complex will redefine college living and will house nearly 1,000 students when complete in Fall 2009. Georgia Southern conducts applied research and engages in public partnerships that seek solutions to local, state and regional challenges. Research varies from probing the genetic chemistry of disease-spreading parasites and answering today’s most pressing public health questions to developing new methods to improve public school students’ achievement in math and science. Centers for business research and development, rural health, international studies, public affairs, teacher education, rehabilitation technology, water policy and biostatistics involve teams of faculty experts, working in conjunction with undergraduate and graduate students, to tackle community and regional concerns. The University extends educational opportunities to citizens throughout the state via graduate centers located throughout the state of Georgia. As a center of learning and discovery, the University has a unique array of public outreach facilities – Botanical Garden, Center for Wildlife Education and Lamar Q. Ball Jr. Raptor Center, Georgia Southern Museum, Nessmith-Lane Continuing Education Building and the Performing Arts Center, which features an 825-seat theatre. Georgia Southern is recognized for a nationally competitive athletics program. The University’s 15 Division I teams compete in the Southern Conference. Across-the-board commitment to excellence has resulted in an unprecedented six NCAA FCS (formerly I-AA) football national championships and NCAA tournament participation in men’s and women’s basketball, baseball, golf, women’s tennis, softball, track & field and volleyball. Nowhere is the commitment to academics and athletics more visible than in the University’s Rings & Diplomas initiative. Our goal is to not only recruit outstanding athletes, but outstanding students. In short, we want our student-athletes to win championships and earn their degrees. This year’s graduates joined more than
75,000 Eagle alumni who have benefited from the Georgia Southern advantage. To help them stay in touch with fellow alums, graduates may become members of the Georgia Southern Alumni Association. The Association offers an array of services to maintain that Georgia Southern connection including the Georgia Southern magazine and the sponsorship of Eagle Club events, affinity groups and meetings throughout the year. Another way to show Eagle pride and strengthen Georgia Southern for the future is through ongoing financial support. The Georgia Southern University Foundation and Southern Boosters help raise funds for academic and athletics programs. These donations, along with money raised by the University’s annual development efforts, provide much-needed funding to enhance the Georgia Southern experience for current and future students. More information about Georgia Southern is available on the Web at www.georgiasouthern.edu www.georgiasouthern.edu.

GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY
THEUNIVERSITY Hidden behind the spotlight of Georgia Southern’s athletic success may be the most important component of why there is a beacon to begin with. Away from the playing fields, the cameras, and the excitement exists Iron Works, the heart of GSU’s strength and conditioning for all 15 intercollegiate teams. There, athletes enhance their physical capabilities through the training leadership of certified coaches, and the end results are usually displayed in the win column. Built in 1989, the recent Iron Works renovation included the addition of offices and the total rehab of the entrance and interior. Nearly $50,000 worth of new weight equipment including multisquat racks, two Olympic platforms complete with bumpers plates and bars, free weights, hammer machines and body weight scale were added. The biggest addition is a Mondo surface track 9x60 feet running down the middle of Iron Works for warm-up and agility work. Already at 5,400 square feet, the addition of nearly 1,000 square feet - including storage areas and modernized reception area - makes Iron Works a premier workout facility. Georgia Southern head strength and conditioning coach Tom Melton re-joined the GSU staff with the dual title of assistant athletics director/athletic performance in the spring of 2004. Assistant strength and conditioning coach Dave Jenkerson was hired in February 2007 to oversee the strength training for the Eagle football program. Thanks to donations received from former Georgia Southern football athletes, Iron Works is also home to two Vertimax Jump Trainers.

STATESBORO, GEORGIA
W
ith all the charm of a small, southern city and the advantages of a metropolitan area, Statesboro provides a relaxing atmosphere for residents, students and visitors alike. Nestled among the pines of Bulloch County, Statesboro is only a short drive from the Atlantic coast. Bulloch County was established in 1796 and is named for Georgia’s first governor, Archibald Bulloch. While in Statesboro, you will not want to miss a visit to the many historic buildings and areas that provide pleasant reminders of the past, like Jaeckel Hotel, established in 1905; The Statesboro Bed & Breakfast Inn, a fully restored turn-of-the-century home; and The Bank of Statesboro, Statesboro’s first bank. Behold Statesboro in full bloom from March until August as colorful dogwoods, magnolias, azaleas and brilliant crepe myrtle trees line the main thoroughfares. You’ll be enchanted by farm land and unspoiled scenic acreage throughout the countryside of Statesboro and Bulloch County. In fact, the city’s beauty was captured as the setting for a couple of motion pictures — 1969, starring Kiefer Sutherland, and Now and Then, starring Demi Moore. For the sports fan, Statesboro is a must see. Georgia Southern University athletic teams excel in nearly every sport. Georgia Southern football is home to six NCAA Division FCS National Championships since 1985 while the men’s and women’s basketball teams have advanced to the NCAA Tournament a combined four times since 1987. GEORGIA SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY
DRBRUCEGRUBE
THEADMINISTRATION SAMBAKER
PRESIDENT
Bruce Grube was appointed as the eleventh president of Georgia Southern University by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia in March 1999. He assumed office July 1, 1999. Georgia Southern University is the largest and most comprehensive center of higher education in the southern half of Georgia. A residential campus of nearly 17,000 students, Georgia Southern is located in historic Statesboro, a classic Main Street community. During President Grube’s tenure, Georgia Southern University has experienced the most active period of growth in its more than 100-year history. In fact, the University has undergone its greatest growth in physical facilities and the quality of academic programs. Georgia Southern University is classified by the Carnegie Foundation as a Research / Doctoral institution. The University’s hallmark is a superior undergraduate experience emphasizing academic distinction, excellent teaching, and student success, complemented by masters and doctoral programs. Accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, Georgia Southern offers 120 undergraduate and graduate degree programs through the doctoral level in eight colleges: Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Business Administration; Education; Health and Human Sciences; Information Technology; Jack N. Averitt College of Graduate Studies; Allen E. Paulson College of Science and Technology, and the Jiann-Ping Hsu College of Public Health. The University extends educational opportunities throughout the region at centers in Savannah, Augusta, Brunswick, Dublin, and at numerous remote sites statewide via distance learning. The Georgia Southern Eagles compete nationally in intercollegiate sports on the NCAA Division I level, with winning records that have earned nationally televised season appearances in football, basketball, baseball, and golf. Georgia Southern has won six national championships, more than any other university, in the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) (formerly I-AA). Georgia Southern is a member of the Southern Conference. Prior to coming to Georgia Southern University, Bruce Grube served as President of St. Cloud State University (MN) from 1995 to 1999. From 1992 to 1995, he served as Provost at Colorado State University at Pueblo with responsibilities as the chief academic officer and the chief operations officer of the university. From 1987 to 1992, he worked as the Provost and Academic Vice President at California State Polytechnic University. Other administrative assignments over the years have included responsibility for strategic planning, institutional research, enrollment management, information technology, legislative and board relations, legal relations, and minor and major capital projects. He earned his A.B. from the University of California, Berkeley, and Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. He is a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Sigma Alpha Theta, Phi Alpha Theta, and Phi Beta Delta academic honor societies. Grube has served as a faculty member in political science since 1971. He is active in national and international organizations and also serves on several community and state boards. He has served as Chair of the Council of Presidents of the Southern Conference and as Vice Chair of the Council of Presidents of the North Central Conference. He is currently a member of the NCAA Executive Committee and Division I Board of Directors. He also serves as Chair of the NCAA Division I Presidential Advisory Group.
DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS As he works in his second decade as Georgia Southern Athletics Director, Sam Baker has steered Eagle Athletics from a period of transition and renewal to consistent success, national prominence and unprecedented growth. Under his leadership over the last 12 years, Georgia Southern has soared to national and conference championships, witnessed continued growth in athletic facilities and reaffirmed its commitment to student-athlete welfare and academic performance. Eagle Athletics have enjoyed extraordinary achievement across the board over the course of Baker’s tenure in Statesboro. Georgia Southern football has reasserted its national profile by winning seven Southern Conference titles, making eight NCAA I-FCS playoff appearances in the last 11 years, and capturing the 1999 and 2000 NCAA I-FCS National Championships. In all, the Eagle and Lady Eagle programs have won 26 SoCon championships and made 20 appearances in NCAA Championships under Baker’s leadership. Since 2000, facility improvements have been a main focal point of Baker’s efforts. During the 2007-08 year work phase one of the softball stadium complex was completed and aesthetic changes to the north concourse at Paulson Stadium matched the improvements made the previous season on the south side. Those improvements add to the growing list of enhancements that makes Georgia Southern stand out among its football peers as having the best facilities in the country. The department recently completed construction of the Gene Bishop Field House at Paulson Stadium and the Bennett-Ramsey Golf Center. The Bishop Field House adds to the outstanding football facilities at Georgia Southern. The Bennett-Ramsey Golf Center ranks among the top practice facilities in all of the NCAA Division I. During the 2004-05 academic year, work was completed on: the renovation of J. I. Clements Baseball Stadium, the construction of a Track/Soccer Stadium, significant upgrades in the Iron Works (Georgia Southern’s strength and conditioning center) and Men’s Basketball Locker Rooms (donated by Michael and Katrina Curry). In addition, other team locker rooms, sports medicine treatment center, equipment room, and coaches’ offices in Hanner Fieldhouse have undergone renovation. Baker has also served as the driving force behind the Dan J. Parrish, Sr., Football Building (completed in 2000) and the Troy Cowart Building (home to Southern Boosters and the GSU Ticket Office). Academics are a high priority for Baker and the entire athletics department. Twelve of the 15 programs improved their APR score from 2005-06 to 2006-07, including men’s tennis which scored a perfect 1,000. The only reason those three programs failed to improve on their numbers is because they scored a perfect 1,000 the previous academic year. During the 2007-08 academic year 141 student-athletes passed 24 credit hours and posted a 3.0 cumulative GPA, earning a spot on the Southern Conference Academic Honor Roll. Additionally, Baker has been active in his service to the Southern Conference and the NCAA. From May 2000 to May 2002, he served as chair of the SoCon Athletics Directors Association. In January 2007, he began a term on the NCAA Division I Football Issues Committee. Baker, a native of Front Royal, Virginia, joined the Georgia Southern management team after five years as Director of the College Football Marketing Corporation, a subsidiary of the College Football Association (CFA). Baker’s responsibilities with the CFA included securing title sponsorship for and administration of its “Promise of Tomorrow” scholarship program. A four-year agreement with Hitachi awarded $1.3 million in scholarships to aid individuals involved in intercollegiate football with the means to pursue careers in the field of education. From 1986-90, he was associate athletic director for financial development at Vanderbilt, where he oversaw the National Commodore Club. In the two years before moving to Nashville, Baker was associate athletic director for external affairs at the University of Oregon, the institution where he served as director of athletic marketing from January 1983 to May 1984. Baker entered the field of intercollegiate athletics at the College of William & Mary, where he spent seven years (1976-82) as director of athletic promotions. Baker holds a 1976 master’s degree in Sports Administration from Ohio University and a 1974 B. A. in Communication Arts from James Madison University. He and his wife of 32 years, Ann, are the parents of three children: Zeb (a doctoral student at Emory), Elizabeth Ann (Foster Care Review Board Coordinator for the Governor’s Office in South Carolina) and Josie (junior at the University of Alabama).

THECOACHES ASHLEYHART HEAD COACH 5TH YEAR UNC ASHEVILLE (1999) Ashley Hart begins her fifth season at the helm of the Georgia Southern women’s soccer team, a program which celebrates its 16th season of success both on the field and inside the classroom. A byproduct of Hart’s leadership on the field is the continued success her team exhibits academically. The Eagles earned the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award in 2007 - its ninth such academic honor since 1996. The 2007 team included then-juniors Michelle Carlson and Holli Finneren as individual recipients of NSCAA regional academic honors. Only the second head coach in the program’s history, Hart owns an 18-50-5 overall record in four seasons on the sidelines. In her inaugural season, she inherited a young team that was coming off just its second losing season since the program began in 1993, and had to break in two true freshman goalkeepers and four more first-year players in the field. The youth movement continued in 2005 with a roster that had just one senior and no juniors, and in 2006, last year’s senior-less squad combined the leadership of the juniors and sophomores with the youth and vitality of an incoming class that saw a lot of playing time. The 2006 squad produced its most wins within a four-year frame and advanced to the Southern Conference semifinals for the first time since 2002. In the classroom the Eagles maintained their success, earning NSCAA Team Academic honors for the fourth straight year in 2004 and eighth time since 1996. The 2007 season pitted the Eagles against one of the toughest schedules 16 it has ever faced. The Eagles fell just short in a number of games and lost six games by just one goal. The Eagles finished with a 3-12-2 overall record and a 2-6-2 conference. “We were definitely in a majority of the games we played, and we played probably one of the toughest schedules since we have been here,” said head coach Ashley Hart. “We played an SEC team (Mississippi State), and Samford made it into

the NCAA tournament. We had two teams from our conference make it to the NCAA tournament (Furman, UNC Greensboro). So it definitely shows we can compete at the highest level. Our team has to be ready now to take that step.” Hired on Dec. 30, 2003, Hart was asked to continue the tradition established by Tom Norton which includes nine seasons of .500 or better and seven top-three finishes in the conference standings. “I wanted someone that had an understanding of what it takes to succeed at being both a student and an athlete,” said GSU athletics director Sam Baker. “In Ashley, I found that perfect combination that I knew would lead our women’s soccer program to continued success.” Prior to accepting Georgia Southern’s top women’s soccer position, Hart spent four seasons at the University of Alabama at Birmingham as an assistant coach. At UAB, she was responsible for overseeing the Blazers’ financial budget, video operations, team travel and recruiting management while aiding with on-field coaching duties. During her four years at UAB, the Blazers maintained a 3.20 team grade point average and produced six individual Academic All-America selections. In 2003, Hart helped lead the Blazers to an overall record of 13-5-1, which included a Conference USA regular season championship mark of 8-2. That followed a 9-9-1 record, including a 5-5 Conference USA tally, in 2002. Hart was instrumental in one of the biggest turnarounds in Blazer history that saw UAB record an eight-win improvement from her first season to her second. The Blazers were 3-14-2 during her initial campaign in Birmingham, but improved to 11-9-0, including 7-3 in league play, in 2001. Before joining the UAB program, Hart served as an assistant coach at Briarwood (Ala.) Christian School where she played a key role in the Lions’ Class 4-A state title in the spring of 2000. She coached several players which earned NCAA Division I scholarships, including current U.S. Women’s National Team performer Cat (Reddick) Whitehill. Hart’s coaching career began in 1999 as she spent a season on the Samford (Ala.) University staff, helping guide the Bulldogs to a 9-8-2 record. As a player, Hart was a four-year starter at the University of North Carolina at Asheville where she was a part of a Big South Conference championship squad in 1995 and a league runner-up finisher in 1996 and 1998. She was a two-time All-Big South choice (1995, 1998) and served as team captain as a senior. A four-time Big South All-Academic Team selection, Hart finished her collegiate career as UNCA’s third all-time leading scorer. Hart earned her bachelor’s degree in biology from UNCA in 1999, graduating with distinction as a research scholar. As a prep standout at Vestavia Hills High School, Hart was named Alabama’s High School Player of the Year in 1995. She was also a member of the Alabama Angels Club Team, which garnered eight state titles.

The 2008 Georgia Southern women’s soccer team has its sights set on the Southern Conference tournament. Though finishing 2007 just one win shy of advancing to the league tournament with the hopes of bettering their 2006 semifinals appearance, the Eagles are optimistic. “Our big goal is to make sure we are competing in the conference tournament at the end of the year,” said head coach Ashley Hart. “Then we want to make sure we establish a system of play and a role for each player on our team, to make sure everybody understands their role, and accepts that role. So, if we can make sure everybody accepts that role and does what they are supposed to do, we will be successful.” But like any sport, especially at the intercollegiate level, competition is sure to bring its tough challenges and tough challengers. The 2008 slate will feature three teams that either won their 2007 conference regular season slate, or their conference tournament (Furman, High Point, UNC Greensboro). Furthermore, last year’s at-large bid for Samford brings the number of 2007 NCAA tournament contenders to four as part of the Eagles’ 2008 schedule. But the Eagles don’t expect to worry solely about their competition. They have their own challenges to face. Gone from last year’s team are seven letterwinners and three starters. Incoming is a group of eight newcomers. Hart says that its senior leadership will be one of the keys to the team’s success. “I think our big challenge is leadership,” said Hart. “As long as our seniors continue what they started this spring, then we will be in good shape. Our other challenge is we’re going to be a little bit young in the back.” Unique to this year’s team is its sense of humor, a characteristic that can prove to be useful when the challenges come. And when they do come, Hart knows where the team can turn to for a style of leadership all their own: the seniors. “They are the ones that are always ready for a good laugh,” said Hart. “But they have also been the players that have played a lot of time for us. So it’s a good balance. They know how to have fun but they know how to compete as well.” If spring camp is an indication of the role that this unique senior leadership will play throughout the 2008 campaign, then the Eagles are in good hands. “I was really proud of them this spring that all of them stepped up in a leadership role,” said Hart. “They learned how to have fun but they also learned how to earn the respect of the rest of the players and direct and guide the team, both vocally and by example on the field.” The Eagles hope that their combined talents in each position mixed with a unique style of leadership and experience will translate into success throughout the regular and postseason. FORWARDS Leading the Georgia Southern attack is two-time All-Southern Conference player and forward Ashley Toussaint. The lone upperclassmen up front, Toussaint will be looked upon for her experience and leadership abilities. “Ashley has the ability to be one of the top players in our conference,” said Hart. “She is coming off a good spring and I think our team learned how to play off her. She’s learned to play balls off to other players in order to get the ball back, which is going to make her even more dangerous. She comes in healthy and ready to play and she can be very dangerous for us.” Last year, Toussaint led the team for the third straight year in goals (5) and points (12) while also leading the team in assists (2-tied) and shots (48). The next two players up front with the most experience are sophomores Elissa Botts and returning starter Jenny Anderson. Anderson was among the team leaders as she tied for second in goals (3), tallied the third-most points (6), and tied for second on the team in shots (14). “Jenny had a great freshman season,” said Hart. “We’re expecting her to come back and be even more of an impact player. I think she has a good chemistry with Ashley, and as she continues to play with her I think that’s going to be important. She’s a much different player than Ashley and so that benefits her and Ashley as well. It’s tough for defenders to mark both of them because they are so different in how they play.” Elissa came off the bench last year, adding depth in 13 games, and will bring added experience up front. “Elissa is coming off a good spring season,” added Hart. “She’s coming back healthy, probably for the first time in her career. So I think if she can stay healthy then she is going to be another dangerous player.” Three freshmen - Danae Kaimuloa, Candace Marshall and Sara Oland - will round out the Eagle attack. “Danae has played at a really high level,” said Hart. “She’s a fun, creative player to watch. She’s going to be a great addition to us up top. And then, Candace and Sara are going to bring a lot of speed to our forwards up front. We have different types of forwards that can hopefully cause a lot of problems for defenses in our conference and all over our schedule.” Hart is confident that the speed at the forward position will counterbalance the youth up front. “They’re definitely young,” said Hart. “It will be interesting to see how they all work together. We have some depth which will be nice, too. And I think we are going to be a lot faster up top which will be a good plus for us as well.”

MIDFIELDERS Perhaps the greatest depth and experience comes at midfield which returns three starters in seniors Holli Finneren, Susanne Rogers and junior Niki Lepper.Added experience off the bench are senior Audrey Brown and sophomores Michelle Berard and Molly Nepote. “Michelle (Berard), Niki, and Holli are our three center midfielders,” said Hart. “Niki has really stepped up as a leader for us in the center midfield so we are expecting a lot from her, not only playing-wise but leadership-wise to direct and keep our team organized and direct our attack.” Lepper started in 15 of 16 appearances for the Eagles and tallied six shots while her teammate Finneren started in 15 of 17 appearances, finishing fourth on the team in points (5) and second in goals (2), which both came from penalty kicks. “Holli returns as a senior and has always been a very consistent player for us,” said Hart. “This, and her experience, will be very valuable for us this year.” Berard was a solid player off the bench last year, making three starts in 17 appearances, finishing with one goal and one assist. “I think she had a good freshman year as well,” said Hart. “Now she has that confidence that she knows our system. I’m expecting her to get her name in the box score this year.” “We return both of our outside midfielders, Audrey and Susanne, and expecting a lot from them, too,” added Hart. “Both seniors have played in almost every game throughout their career. So consistency from both of them is important.” Though she made only four starts in 17 appearances, Brown’s boost off the bench translated into three goals (tied for second on the team), one assist and seven points (second on the team). Rogers started in 13 of 16 appearances last year, tallying one assist and providing the much needed experience at midfield. Nepote gained experience as a freshman by coming off the bench for six games and will be expected to make a solid contribution. “The spring was very good for her,” said Hart. “She found a role as a holding midfielder for us. She found her niche on the team and has done a very good job of distributing balls from the midfield, being that calming factor for us.” Returning from a medical redshirt is junior Kate Boardman who in 2006 made 14 starts in 19 appearances, tallying two goals. “She can be a big time player for us on the outside with her speed and her ability to serve a ball,” said Hart. “So we are hoping that as she returns she stays healthy and she will be able to play the whole season this year.” Hart welcomes freshman Chelsea Kephart to round out the deep midfield presence. DEFENDERS Georgia Southern lost valuable experience in the back after losing Colleen Deignan, Katie Gosnell and Heather Smith. The Eagles will rely heavily upon returning starters Michelle Carlson and Laura Smith to head the defense. Carlson, a senior who started in all 17 appearances, and Smith, a junior who also logged 17 starts in as many games, will be joined in experience by senior Abby Wheeler and sophomore Jennifer Godfrey. “Michelle (Carlson) has been our starting back for the last two years and has done a great job being a consistent leader for us,” said Hart. “She’s not afraid to go into tackles hard and she keeps our defense very organized back there.” Hart is expecting the upperclassmen to play leadership roles to help keep things organized on defense. “Laura is probably our most consistent player, our most dependable player, and a good leader in the back, and Abby has been a great vocal leader for us,” said Hart. “So we’re expecting both of them to step up really big for us and kind of help direct our young outside backs.” “Jennifer has found her spot this spring as an outside back and has done a great job for us this spring playing out there.” Freshmen Christy Naife and Caroline Rutledge are two newcomers that Hart expects will make an immediate impact. “They both played at a high level on their club teams and I expect them to be able to step in and play right away. It will be a little bit of an adjustment for them but they both are very competitive, they know what it takes to win and understand playing at a high level.” GOALKEEPERS The Eagles have plenty depth, though youthful, in the cage to help steer the defensive effort and thwart the opposition. Junior Lauren Santos returns as the only one with college experience and has been the starting goalkeeper for the Eagles in 30 out of 33 career appearances in front of the net. Last year she ranked fifth in the conference in saves per game (5.08) and was named to the Samford all-tournament team. “I think she has the opportunity to be one of the best goalkeepers in our conference if she continues to train and improve like she has been,” said Hart. “She’s a great leader for us and does a good job organizing in the back, but also keeping our team calm in situations. She’s going to be vital for us leadership-wise and goalkeeper-wise.” Joining the team in the spring as a walk-on goalkeeper is sophomore Mitra Sartipi.Depth is added by freshman Missy Meyer. “We are going to have probably the most depth we have had in a while at the goalkeeper position,” said Hart. “If one player is not playing well, then I have confidence that whoever is the second string goalkeeper will be able to step in and we won’t lose anything in that area.”

2007YEARINREVIEW
EAGLES FIGHT THROUGH CHALLENGING SCHEDULE, PASS THE TEST OF ENDURANCE The wins column could have just as well been three times greater for the 2007 Georgia Southern women’s soccer season.
fortunately fell in its next four games at College of Charleston (Oct. 4), at UNC Greensboro (Oct. 7), versus Furman (Oct. 11) and at Elon (Oct. 14).
The team notched two ties in the latter half of the season and by just one goal, fell short in six games. Although the Eagles finished the campaign 3-12-2 and 2-6-2 in Southern Conference play, the 2007 campaign was exemplified by displays of endurance and leadership both on the field and in the classroom.
Georgia Southern went the distance at home versus Western Carolina in a 1-1 doubleovertime draw (Oct. 19). The Eagles got up on the scoreboard first in the 11th minute when Anderson received a slot pass from Toussaint and shot it into the left side of the goal. The Eagles then bounced back after a 2-1 road loss at Appalachian State to later pick up a win versus Wofford (Oct. 25). After suffering a scoring drought in the first half, it was Audrey Brown who notched the game’s first goal. Brown rebounded Toussaint’s saved shot eight yards out and quickly connected for a 1-0 Eagles lead and her third goal of the season. Five minutes after the ensuing Wofford equalizer, Toussaint tallied the game winning goal with less than three minutes remaining in the match. Though the Eagles were one win short of postseason SoCon tournament action, and while the season ended with a loss at Davidson (Nov. 1), the school the Eagles defeated the year prior to advance to the tournament semifinals, the Eagles were nonetheless recognized for their hard work and endurance, both on and off the field.
Eagles make the transition to the offensive attack.
“We were definitely in a majority of the games we played, and we played probably one of the toughest schedules since we have been here,” said head coach Ashley Hart. “We played an SEC team (Mississippi State), and Samford made it into the NCAA tournament. We had two teams from our conference make it to the NCAA tournament (Furman, UNC Greensboro). So it definitely shows we can compete at the highest level. Our team has to be ready now to take that step.”

To Samford (Aug. 31), Mississippi State (Sep. 2) and Mercer (Sep. 14), the Eagles dropped games by one goal before picking up that first win. It was as though Georgia Southern was trying to make up for the previous five blemishes as four different Eagles scored in a 6-0 shutout victory over The Citadel (Sep. 19) in front of the home crowd. Jenny Anderson notched her first career goal to give the Eagles a 1-0 lead. Ashley Toussaint and Audrey Brown both found the back of the net twice in addition to Heather Smith’s unassisted winner. After dropping the next two games to Marshall at home and High Point on the road, the Eagles bounced back with a road thriller. Defender Colleen Deignan scored the game-winning goal with 20 seconds remaining in double-overtime to give Georgia Southern a 1-0 victory at Winthrop (Sep. 28). Deignan connected off a corner-kick pass from teammate Susanne Rogers to score her first career goal and lift Georgia Southern to its first-ever victory over Winthrop.
Ashley Toussaint makes a forward pass on the attack.
Ashley Toussaint was named to the all-SoCon second team after ranking among the league leaders on offense. She was tied for sixth in shots (48), tied for second in shots per game (3.0) and tenth in points per game (0.75). In the classroom, the 2007 Eagles continued the tradition of academic success. The team finished the year with a combined GPA of 3.02 earning its ninth National Soccer Coaches Association Team Academic Award. “That is one thing I am very proud of with our team is that they are very competitive in the classroom as well,” said Hart. “It’s always great when you get a phone call that says, ‘Hey coach I just made an ‘A’ on my test!’ I think the important thing when they graduate from college is we want them getting a degree and being competitive out in the real world and our team has done a great job with that.” Individually, Michelle Carlson and Holli Finneren were rewarded for their footwork and bookwork, being named to the NSCAA College Scholar all-South Regional team.
A stifling defense guards the Eagle territory.
Two days later, Georgia Southern returned home to play host to Chattanooga (Sep. 30). Down 2-0 in the second half, the Eagles used a pair of winners by Michelle Berard and Toussaint to rally back to a 2-2, double-overtime stalemate. “We have a very tough conference and we competed against some tough teams,” Hart said. “Ashley Toussaint had another great season, she’s a great goal scorer for us.”
Backed up by Audrey Brown and Heather Smith, Holli Finneren pushes the ball up field.
Toussaint went on to lead the team for the third straight year in goals (5) and points (12) while also leading the team in assists (2-tied) and shots (48).
“Laura-Ashley Harris, Shea Hickey, Colleen Deignan, Holli Finneren, Michelle Carlson, Abby Wheeler and Laura Smith are always well over a 3.5 GPA and I think that’s a great testament to them that they are able to balance the stress of soccer and academics and be successful in both,” said Hart.
“Our back line had improved immensely,” said Hart. “Our defense was very solid in the back with Lauren Santos in goal and our juniors Michelle Carlson and Abby Wheeler, sophomores Laura Smith and Heather Smith in the back. So I think we had great leadership and strength in the back, we just need to be able to combine that with scoring up front.”
“Hopefully that is a tradition that will continue over the years to come for Georgia southern women’s soccer.”
Over the next two weeks, the Eagles faced its stiffest competition in league play, but un-

For 16 years, the Georgia Southern women’s soccer program has excelled both on the field and in the classroom since the program’s inception in 1993. The Eagles have gained the reputation as having one of the top academic athletic teams in the country. Receiving individual and team academic honors has become a regular occurrence, which includes five GSU Female Student-Athlete-of-the-Year awards going to Eagle soccer players. But the academic awards don’t stop there. The Eagles were one of only five schools in the nation to receive four consecutive NSCAA Team Academic Awards, an award received earning a team grade-point-average of 3.0, between 1996-99. The Eagles have also earned the award each year from 2001-2004, including a 3.25 GPA during the 2004 campaign, the highest in program history. The 1998-99 squad captured the GSU President’s Award, signifying the top academic performance among the school’s female athletic teams. With a combined 3.02 GPA, the 2007 squad added its ninth NSCAA Team Academic Award to its list of accolades. Individually, Michelle Carlson and Holli Finneren carried on the tradition, earning the NSCAA College Scholar All-South Region awards. Two Eagles have earned Academic All-America honors. Rachel Tolliver was the first to accomplish the feat, being named to the 1995 ISAA first team. Following the 1996 season, she earned spots on the NSCAA second team and the GTE/CoSIDA At-Large third team. In both years, Tolliver was a GTE/ CoSIDA Academic All-District honoree and was crowned as GSU’s 1995 Female Student-Athlete of the Year. Throughout her career, Tolliver maintained a 3.96 GPA and graduated with a degree in Computer Information Systems. Lindsey Grossman duplicated Tolliver’s success in 1999. She was named to the NSCAA first team and the GTE/CoSIDA all-district III at-large team. Grossman was also the recipient of the Southern Conference’s Dorothy Hicks scholarship to aid in the pursuit of graduate studies and the GSU Female Student-Athlete of the Year Award. Grossman was also part of the 1999 senior class in which all six seniors graduated with a GPA of 3.0 or above, the first such occurrence in the history of the GSU athletic program. Laura-Ashley Harris was named the Georgia Southern Scholar-Athlete of the Year (2006), in addition to being named a recipient of the Coleman Lew Leadership Award and the Arthur Ashe Jr. Sport Scholar Award in the same year. Other women’s soccer players to earn the Georgia Southern Student-Athlete-of-the-Year Award include Sandy Bonfim, a 1997 graduate who captured the honor her senior season, and Robin Thirsk, who finished her career as the second-leading scorer in school history. Bonfim and Grossman were NCAA Woman-of-the-Year nominees in 1997 and 1999, respectively. Overall, eight players have earned a total of 12 NSCAA Academic All-Region honors while studying at Georgia Southern. Earning a degree and participating in athletics at the college level are opportunities of a lifetime offered at Georgia Southern. The program’s success in both areas speaks for itself.

The Southern Conference, which began its 88th season of intercollegiate competition in 2008, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of the student-athlete and defining the league’s role in helping to build lifelong leaders and role models. John Iamarino The Southern ConCommissioner ference has been on the forefront of innovation and originality in developing creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. From establishing the first conference basketball tournament (1921), tackling the issue of freshman eligibility (1922), developing women’s championships (1984) and becoming the first conference to install the three-point goal in basketball (1980), the Southern Conference has been a pioneer. The Southern Conference is the nation’s fiftholdest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), the Missouri Valley (1907), the Pacific 10 (1915) and the Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older in terms of origination. Academic excellence has been a major part of the Southern Conference’s tradition. Hundreds of Southern Conference student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN the Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-America and all-district teams. A total of 19 Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions. The Southern Conference currently consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. The Southern Conference office is located in the historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, the Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004 and today offers the SoCon a first class meeting area and offices as well as a spacious library for storage of the conference’s historical documents. The Southern Conference has also excelled as the premier Football Championship Subdivision conference. Southern Conference member Appalachian State has won the last three Football Championship Subdivision titles becoming the first team to do so. Membership History The Southern Conference was formed on February 25, 1921 at a meeting in Atlanta, Ga. as 14 institutions from the 30-member Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association (SIAA) reorganized as the Southern Conference. Those charter members included Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi State, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. Athletic competition began in the fall of 1921. In 1922, six more schools - Florida, LSU, Mississippi, South Carolina, Tulane and Vanderbilt - joined the fold. A year later, the University of the South joined the ranks. VMI became a member in 1925 and Duke was added 1929. Since then, conference membership has experienced a series of membership changes with 42 institutions having been affiliated with the league. The league has undergone two major transitions during its history. The first occurred in December 1932 when the Southeastern Conference was formed from the 23-school Southern Conference. The league’s 13 members west and south of the Appalachian Mountains reorganized to help reduce the ex-

tensive travel demands that were present in the league at the time. In 1936, the Southern Conference invited The Citadel, William & Mary, Davidson, Furman, Richmond and Wake Forest to join the membership. The second major shift came about in 1953 when Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest withdrew from the league to form the Atlantic Coast Conference. This change was brought about due to the desire of many of those schools to schedule a greater number of regular season basketball games against local rivals. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNC Greensboro, Samford, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford.
Leadership John Iamarino was officially named commissioner of the conference on January 2, 2006. Previously, Iamarino served as commissioner of the Northeast Conference. In nine years with the New Jersey-based league, Iamarino promoted the conference through an ambitious agenda which improved competition, upgraded compliance-related matters and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the conference and its member institutions. The Southern Conference named its first commissioner in December 1950. Duke head football coach Wallace Wade made the transition from Blue Devil football coach to athletics administration as the first person at the helm of the conference. Lloyd Jordan replaced Wade as the commissioner in 1960 and served a 14-year term until Ken Germann became the league head in 1974. Germann was the commissioner for 13 years and orchestrated the league’s expansion to include women’s athletics. In 1987, he was succeeded by Dave Hart who spearheaded the transfer of the league office from Charlotte, N.C. to Asheville, N.C. Wright Waters succeeded Hart upon his retirement in 1991. Under Waters’ leadership, the Southern Conference expanded to 12 members, added three women’s sports and posted record revenue from the basketball Tournament. Waters, who is currently the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference, was followed by Alfred B. White in 1998. White, a veteran member of the NCAA office, introduced the current SoCon logo and elevated the conference’s commitment to marketing and development of corporate partners. He became the president of the Asheville franchise of the National Basketball Development League in 2001. Danny Morrison headed the conference from 2001-2005 and orchestrated the league’s move from Asheville, N.C. to historic Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. Under Morrison’s leadership, the conference increased its marketing and promotional efforts. Championship History The first Southern Conference Championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in 1922. The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament to become the first recognized league champion in any sport. The Southern Conference Tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. The Southern Conference began sponsoring women’s sports during the 1983-84 season. That year, league championships were held in volleyball, basketball and tennis. Cross country joined

the mix in 1985 and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track championships in 1988.
