2015 Scholarship Recipients

Badgerland Envision Scholarship All graduating Badgerland Girl Scouts are eligible to apply for the Envision Scholarship which is awarded to a girl based on her experiences living by and exemplifying the Girl Scout Promise and Law.

“Girl Scouting has taught me that my voice has the greatest impact when it comes to making change. I have learned to stand up for others and myself. I have learned that my opinion matters. And maybe most importantly, I have learned the importance of advocating for an organization which has given me so much.”

~ Hallie Kircher-Henning

Loretta Himmelsbach Scholarship This scholarship is available exclusively to Girl Scouts who have earned their Gold Award. The recipient is chosen on the basis of community service, extra curricular involvement and leadership.

“My Girl Scouting experiences will always be a lasting part of me. I have gained valuable knowledge and skills through service, volunteer, and educational opportunities. Girl Scouting has given me great memories to look back on and I hope I can inspire other young girls to stay involved.”

~ Emily Hill

Introducing Girl Scouts of Wisconsin - Badgerland Council

Gold Award Class of 2015 Courtney Burns Olivia Fountaine Emily Hill Isabel Meyer Lauren Paul Carly Somermeyer Meghan Wallace Bailey Weston

Our Highest Award The Girl Scout Gold Award is the most prestigious award that Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors can earn. Fulfilling the requirements for the Girl Scout Gold Award starts with completing leadership prerequisites designed to develop the leadership skills needed to accomplish a Girl Scout Gold Award project. This award represents a girl’s commitment to herself and to her community as she focuses on leadership, career exploration, personal challenges and completes an enduring project that will benefit her community. It takes many hours of preparation, planning and work to accomplish the goals a girl has set for herself through her Gold Award Project. It is notable that only about five percent of eligible girls earn this award! Since 1916, Girl Scouts’ highest award has stood for excellence and leadership for girls everywhere. Today you join the ranks of generations of young women who have made a difference in their communities and beyond. As a Girl Scout, you are part of the sisterhood of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts, a global movement comprised of more than ten million girls worldwide who are using their talents to positively impact their communities. With your talent and passion, you, too, can make changes in your community that can reach people around the world. Congratulations on your remarkable achievement!

Courtney Burns Troop 1054 Madison

Spreading Donor Half-Sibling Awareness A child of donor insemination, Courtney discovered there are limited resources for such families to connect. Using the Donor Sibling Registry website, Courtney learned she has over 30 half siblings. Her curiosity piqued, she reached out to them and managed to connect with 20 siblings. But the road to finding her brothers and sisters was long and arduous and that’s what inspired her project. She wanted to create communication channels allowing families like hers to easily connect and share information. Courtney launched a website to share her story and others who have similar families. The site includes information about her half-siblings, including photos and common characteristics they share such as height and hair color. Courtney said this experience has helped her find that “my story is worth sharing.” Courtney also developed a resource brochure to be distributed at medical clinics, in the LGBTQ community and at high schools and colleges.

Olivia Fountaine Troop 3086 Evansville

Stations of the Cross for Holy Cross Cemetery Spirituality is not confined to the insides of a church. Olivia noticed the Catholic parish in Evansville lacked a place of meditation outside the confines of the church building. That’s when she got to work building a Stations of the Cross garden at Holy Cross Cemetery. Using her artistic skills, Olivia created and designed her own porcelain tiles for each station and embellished the space as a destination for reflection. She even produced information cards for each station that include comforting prayers for visitors. “I learned to budget my time and step outside of my comfort zone,” she said. Olivia’s “golden” project has enhanced the Evansville cemetery and is lauded as a welcome community addition.

The Recipe Table While working at the food pantry, Emily realized there were many food items that families avoided taking because they didn’t know how to use or cook the item. This gave her the idea to create ‘The Recipe Table.’ Each month, Emily focused on an unpopular food item that was in stock. She researched and printed simple recipes with ingredients families could obtain from the food pantry. Families started to look forward to the new recipes each month, and the once unpopular food items soon started to disappear from pantry shelves. “In order for my project to be successful, I had to talk about it with other pantry volunteers; discussing it with pantry customers was necessary to bring awareness to the project and gain feedback,” Emily said. All the recipes have been compiled into the Food Pantry Cookbook, which has been distributed to other food pantries in Dane County.

Isabel Meyer

Troop 2795 Madison

Edible Plant Education What’s for dinner? Maybe it’s growing right outside your back door. Isabel’s project was inspired after learning about so-called food deserts in her community. A food desert is when someone lives too far from a grocery store or farmer’s market to easily access nutritious food. Foraging is becoming a popular way to find food, so Isabel decided to create a booklet that identifies wild, edible plants that grow in Madison. The booklet singles out 14 plants with their standard and Latin names, gives a description of the plants, the time the plants should be harvested and how the plants can be prepared to eat. Isabel’s foraging handbook is now being distributed at community centers, food pantries, libraries and schools in greater Madison. “People facing hunger in Madison are using the booklet to identify the food already growing around them,” Isabel said.

Lauren Paul

Troop 3086 Evansville

Rosary Retreat at Holy Cross Cemetery Cemeteries don’t have to be scary or places of sorrow. Indeed, Lauren has been visiting cemeteries ever since she could walk doing genealogical research with her mom! She wanted to create a space in her church cemetery that wasn’t about grief and mourning, so she designed and planted a rosary garden for visitors to enjoy. Lauren researched which plants and flowers were most suitable for the site and got to work digging and planting. She carefully chose plants to attract butterflies and songbirds to enhance the garden’s peaceful ambiance. During the project, Lauren learned to be clear and direct about her expectations and needs. “Without that communication and cooperation, I don’t know if my garden would be what it is today,” she said. The garden will be maintained as a service project by the church’s confirmation students.

Carly Somermeyer Troop 2106 Waunakee

Creating a Christian Children’s Library Carly loves books, children and her church so it’s no surprise she centered her Gold Award project on a topic combining all three. She identified a need at her church when she realized there was no dedicated space for children to read and hangout. Carly literally established a children’s library. Working with the church leadership, she was given a space to create the library. She held a drive to fill up the bookcases with books and videos and even set up a card catalog system so kids could checkout items from the library and keep inventory tracked. Carly didn’t forget about the ambiance either. She arranged for artists within her church community to paint children-friendly art. Once everything was in place, Carly held a dedication and grand opening ceremony for the congregation and children. Carly said her favorite part of her project was “designing a space kid friendly and seeing how much all the children love reading in the new library.”

Meghan Wallace

Troop 2879 Fort Atkinson

Rethink Your Drink Obesity is a global epidemic and Meghan wanted to raise community awareness that drinking sugary beverages contributed to the problem. Meghan created a mobile community education booth and hit the road visiting lots of high-population venues including the farmer’s market, health fairs and the Boys and Girls Club. At each event, she presented a different topic including the dangers of diet soda, the benefits of water and how to read nutrition labels. With her presentations, Meghan prompted over 350 people to sign a pledge to stop or reduce their consumption of sugary beverages or increasing their water intake. “I realized how much I love it when people would tell me how they have stopped drinking soda or they now only drink water. It’s exciting to feel like the message is getting out there,” Meghan said. Her mobile booth will be kept at the local hospital and be used to help educate patients.

Bailey Weston

Troop 2879 Fort Atkinson

Science Club Bailey loves science and wanted to get more kids interested while helping them discover just how much fun it can be. She partnered with the Boys and Girls Club to create science clubs at three different elementary schools in Fort Atkinson. Bailey then developed hourlong, science-themed lesson plans that included handson experiments . All the projects were aimed at helping kids make the connection between science and the real world. At the end of each lesson, the kids would complete a craft project relating to the theme and proudly take it home to share with their parents what they learned at Science Club. “The first time one of the kids ran up to me excited and wondering what we would be learning about just brought so much joy to me,” Bailey said. Her lessons are now posted on the Fort Atkinson Boys and Girls Club website to inspire future scientists.

Skill Building. Leadership. Personal Growth. The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. The Silver Award represents a girl’s accomplishments in Girl Scouting and in her community as she grows and works to improve her life and the lives of others. Working in a group or individually, girls select projects that help them build skills, explore careers and gain leadership. The girls earning their Silver Awards this year have proven that they are community leaders who are organized, determined and dedicated to improving their communities!

Savannah Kemerling Individually Registered Girl Scout Platteville Little Free Library

I have a love for reading and want to share it with others. I decided to build a Little Free Library in the area around the Rountree Cottage because there weren’t any nearby. To keep with a literary theme, I used the Bunny Cottontail farmhouse as the inspiration of the design.

Madison Leggett Individually Registered Girl Scout Evansville Recycling Cans

My Take Action project was to raise money to purchase recycling cans for the Evansville School District so they can put them outside during school sporting events. I chose this project, because I wanted to lessen the amount of recyclable materials that were being thrown away.

Nora Briddell Tierney Lofgren Kelsey Marca Troop 1076 Monona Little Free Library

There isn’t a public library in our community so we built and installed a little free library in our school’s garden. Now the community can borrow books locally.

Sarah Schofield Troop 2008 Madison Teen Suicide Project

For my Take Action project I decided to address the issue of teen suicide. I researched information on the topic and then helped write and produce a video that addresses the issue.

Girl Scout Silver Award Emily Elkins Elizabeth Woerpel Troop 2037 New Glarus Wilhelm Tell Play Wedding Dancers

We wanted to help with the play, a community tradition for over 75 years. Many props and costumes were worn out. The hoops used during the wedding dance were redesigned and rebuilt and new costumes sewn for the actors.

Joy Farkas Leila Fletcher Catherine Maxwell Troop 2045 Madison Little Free Library

To help share our love of reading with others in the community, we built, installed and are maintaining a Little Free Library.

Zoe Keck Elizabeth Ng Troop 2053 Monona Helping Hearts

Our troop leader recently had breast cancer and we wanted a project to help people going through the same experience. We created Helping Hearts, a heart-shaped comfort pillow and distributed them to mastectomy patients. We worked with quilters from the Monona Senior Center Quilting Group to sew the pillows.

Ashlyn Erpenbach Rachel Petzold Sara Singer Rose Torti Allison Weiss Troop 2182 Madison/Middleton/De Forest Arboretum Project

We wanted to do something that would benefit the entire community and decided our school was the perfect place to do that. We planted trees along the paths of our school’s prairie and made benches for the playground and arboretum. Our project helps promotes clean air, natural shade and creating habitats as well as addressing the issue of air pollution.

Kasandra Chapman Victoria Chapman Rachel Miller Claire Molitor Troop 2283 McFarland Welcome to IMMS Videos

We created a welcome video as a fun way to welcome 6th graders to our middle school and ease their anxiety about the transition. We interviewed the 6th grade teachers, asking them common questions kids have about entering middle school and gave them a tour of the school.

Katelynn Gunderson Montana Torbleau Troop 2283 McFarland Benches for Dog Park

We love taking our dogs to the dog park but noticed there were only two benches for people to sit on. We built and installed more benches in the park so now dog owners have a place to sit while their dog plays.

Samantha Buerger Victoria Hagedorn Natalie Hershman Troop 2310 Fort Atkinson/Milton Cards for Humane Society

Our local Humane Society spends over $1000 each year buying thank you and sympathy cards. To help reduce their expenses, we held workshops for volunteers that are too young to help at the shelter to make cards. This way, they can still help the Humane Society. We put together two bins of supplies so kids can continuously participate in the card-making project.

Peyton Barber Troop 2368 Madison Stop For Me

I wanted to increase awareness of the law that drivers must stop for pedestrians in a crosswalk. To do this, I recorded a radio public service announcement which aired on local radio stations. I also staged photo shoots of people crossing the street and asked, through different social media channels, for people to submit their own photos of themselves in crosswalks.

Girl Scout Silver Award Jillian Nienhaus Madoline Plattenberg Troop 2368 Madison Kennedy Elementary Project

We wanted to address the issue of poverty in the community. We held a clothing and school supply drive to help students at Kennedy Elementary School because buying back-to-school clothes and school supplies can be expensive and not all families can afford it. We also helped refresh the school by repainting the map on the playground.

Isabella Christy Claire Cunningham Troop 2368 Madison FOSTERing Warmth For Kids

Both of our families have experience with the foster care system and we wanted our Take Action project to connect with foster care kids, so we made tie blankets to give to kids that are currently in foster care. Sometimes foster care kids have few personal possessions. With our project, they have something of their own to bring if they have to move to another home.

Maren Jensen Julia Bohn Nicole Nelson Kimberly Bradow Brittany Smith Alisa Brown Allyson Tebon Adriana DeLuca Molly Fedkenheuer Troop 2533 Cottage Grove/Deerfield/Marshall A Night Under the Stars Camp

We held an overnight camp where we taught younger kids about fire safety and what to do when a fire happens. In order to get into the camp there was a fee of one stuffed animal or more. The stuffed animals were donated to the Deerfield Fire Department.

Kaitlin Daane Megan Garcia Abigail Hein Grace Rowley Troop 2949 Beaver Dam Sign Restoration

The sign outside of the Girl Scout House was badly in need of repair. The area around the sign was weedy, the sign paint was chipped and it did not show the true spirit of Girl Scouts. So, over a summer we weeded, repainted and beautified the area. Now it shows Girl Scout pride!

Xena Meighan Naomi Niesman Natalee Vavra Troop 3225 Monroe Homeless Awareness

Breanne Wilhite Victoria Wilkinson

We wanted to raise awareness and help with homelessness in our community. We organized an event where we slept in boxes in a public place and invited passersby to provide non-perishable food donations. At the end of the day, the donations were boxed up for the homeless shelter.

Aryam Delgado Jessica Fischer Rebecca Polheber Heather Police Troop 3593 Genoa City Food Pantry Helpers

Our food pantry did not have very good advertising so we decided to help them promote themselves by creating posters. We laminated the posters so they can be reused for years to come. We also decorated bags that are filled with food for recipients and unloaded food from trucks after delivery.

Sophia Baggett Anna Logan Cheyanne Mattie Molly Mikkelson Troop 4041 La Crosse Operation: Books for Kids

We noticed a lack of kids books at organizations that served kids. We held a book drive and distributed the books to various organizations in the community. When we took the books to the non-profits, we read to the children who were there and gave them age-appropriate books to take home.

Grace Amundson Amanda Clements Jenny Hamann Troop 4069 La Crosse Fishing in Wisconsin

Our Take Action project addresses overfishing in Wisconsin and educates kids about the different kinds of fish found in local lakes and rivers. We created hands-on activities to teach kids, from preschool to middle school, about the varieties of fish and their habitats. The project will be used by the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Services to help educate children in the future.

Girl Scout Silver Award MacKenzie Wylie Troop 4475 Sparta Mats for the Homeless

My Take Action project helps improve the lives of the homeless who can’t sleep in shelters for various reasons. The plastic sleeping mat creates a buffer between them and the ground, deters bugs, is easy to clean and repels moisture. The blankets included in each mat helps keep them warm.

Cait Brown, Troop 5002 Alexi Tranel, Troop 5130 Platteville Be a Friend, Make a Friend

Our Take Action project is based on the American Red Cross concept of friendship boxes. We created Friendship Bags and collected and/or made toothbrushes, toothpaste, brushes, homemade bookmarks and bracelets, crayons, stickers, reading and coloring books, hand sanitizer, pencils and notebooks for the kids that come to Family Advocates.

Kendra Larson Makenzi Tranel Troop 5130 Platteville Pet Pals

An area pet shelter was going to close because of a lack of supplies. Because both of our family pets were originally from a shelter, we wanted to give back and help. We made tie blankets, dog toys, cat toys, homemade dog treats and did a pet food and supply drive to support the shelter.

Having Fun Through Teamwork The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. The award is designed to be a leadership adventure and encourage girls to plan and complete projects that help them develop more confidence, meet new people and have the kind of fun that happens when you work with other Girl Scouts to make a difference.
