Opening Night of the Performing Arts & Community Center
2018-2019
Annual Report
Dear Friends, On behalf of the Gill St. Bernard’s School Board of Trustees and the Office of Advancement, it is my pleasure to share the 2018-2019 Annual Report on Philanthropy, highlighting the school’s successful fundraising efforts for the previous fiscal year. Raising over $2.5 million in cash and pledges through annual, capital, and endowment giving was made possible through the inspired and generous support of parents, alumni, grandparents, faculty, staff, trustees, and friends. For the fourth consecutive year, the Annual Fund surpassed $1,000,000. Our Board of Trustees, led by Immediate Past Chair Janine Udoff, P ’16, ’17, ’21, ’23, reached 100% participation, and GSB faculty and staff reached an all-time high of 73% participation. Your collective generosity as Annual Fund donors continues to provide vital resources for ensuring excellence in all our programs for every GSB student.
A Letter from
Sid Rowell
In addition, the Delivering the Future Capital Campaign was completed, raising more than $21 million. My deepest gratitude goes to Capital Campaign Chair Doug Matthews, P ’16, ’18, ’24, and the Capital Campaign Committee for their incredible commitment and leadership. Thank you to all who participated in the campaign by sharing our vision of Gill’s future and answering the call for support. I would also like to express my gratitude to the Parents’ Association, under the leadership of Monica Micera, P ’22, for their tireless work building community through hosting events and fundraising for GSB. Last year, over 275 dedicated parents volunteered their time and talents. Casino Night, chaired by Lynn Farscht, P ’21, and Ann Matthews, P ’16, ’18, ’24, was particularly noteworthy, raising over $186,000 for Gill St. Bernard’s. With the capital campaign a success, and the vibrant new Performing Arts and Community Center fully operational, we now turn our fundraising focus to the annual giving program, which has been rebranded the GSB Fund. Because the GSB Fund is essential to nearly every aspect of the daily GSB experience, our students, faculty, and staff rely on the community’s generosity as they work to bring to life our school’s mission, core values, and strategic goals. I hope you will join me in supporting the 2019-2020 GSB Fund. Together, we honor and magnify our past success and move forward, confident in the future of our school.
S.A. Rowell Head of School

Fulbright Sc “The Fulbright Program aims to bring a little more knowledge, a little more reason, and a little more compassion into world affairs and thereby increase the chance that nations will learn at last to live in peace and friendship.” - Senator J. William Fulbright
Margaret LaPré ’13 It was a love of her Upper School French classes with Mesdames Powell and Grabowski, signing up as a freshman for the Spring Unit “Taste of France,” and staying with it through AP level, which laid the groundwork for Margaret LaPré’s future as an international relations major. Although, perhaps too close to see those initial experiences as the basis of a college major, “I thought I would pursue a STEM field,” she says. “However, after taking Introduction to International Studies during my sophomore year at Boston College, I knew I had found my major. I was completely fascinated by the historical, cultural, and ethical foundations of political systems.” In the spring of her junior year at BC, Margaret spent a semester studying French in Paris, and the trip cemented her decision to apply for a Fulbright. “When I came back to the U.S., I felt I had so much more to learn from other countries and cultures, so I actively pursued opportunities to return abroad.” Opportunity came knocking with a Fulbright Scholarship to Germany. While Margaret loved working with German teenagers on developing their English skills, she believes the more significant exchanges were cultural and personal. “One of the taglines of the Fulbright program is, turning nations into people,” she offers. “As an individual, you are a completely different representative of your country than the mass media portrayal. The interaction can change a person’s idea of an entire nation.” With the life-changing cultural experience of her time in Germany, Margaret now works with an organization helping to bring Fulbright recipients from Germany to the U.S. In the short term, she is happy to maintain her connection to Germany. “I will never forget those ties,” she says. As a future goal, she says, “I would love to go back one day and work as a teacher again, perhaps internationally.”

cholarships Jack Lowe ’15 During his sophomore and junior years at GSB, Jack Lowe ’15 found the interests that would inform his college studies, his eventual career, and his becoming a Fulbright Scholarship recipient. Two elective courses, “Race, Class, and Gender” and “Urban Sociology,” codified his passion for civil justice and introduced him to the book The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness. Jack credits the book and the courses with inspiring his interest in prison reform. Later attending the US Army Academy at West Point, Jack pursued a degree in criminal justice, taking courses in criminology, reading widely about prison infrastructure and reform, and visiting several prisons. “We visited Fishkill Prison as part of the Bard College prison initiative and talked with inmates there,” he says. “We visited Sing Sing Prison and Angola Prison, which is infamous for having inmates go into the fields to pick cotton.” Jack notes, matter-of-factly, that there are abundant opportunities to study criminal justice. Graduating from West Point last June, Jack was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army, and his active service was put on hold. As part of a two-year Fulbright Scholarship he was awarded last spring, Jack will complete a master’s program in cultural criminology at the University of Lund in Sweden. “The program focuses on how societies are impacted by their justice systems,” he explains. “It is a totally new program, and I will be part of the first cohort of graduates, which is exciting.” Jack chose Sweden to study because of its exceptionally progressive criminal justice system. He ultimately intends to bring the knowledge he gains back home. He looks forward to learning about Sweden’s success in rehabilitation and how to apply those practices in the United States. “I need to understand how they are so effective,” he shares. “I think prison shouldn’t be a way to punish people; it should be a way to make them better.”
“Educational exchange can turn nations into people, contributing as no other forms of communication can contribute to the humanizing of international relations.” - Senator J. William Fulbright

National Geographic Society Selects
Noreen Syed for Fellowship In recognition of her commitment to geographic education, GSB STREAMS Director and Fifth-Grade Science Teacher Noreen Syed ‘10 became a National Geographic Society and Lindblad Expeditions Grosvenor Teacher Fellow. This prestigious honor brought with it a two-week expedition on the National Geographic Quest, a 238-foot long vessel. Goals for the fellowship recipients included: 1) broadening their knowledge about the Inside Passage—its culture, geography, biodiversity, and people; 2) creating a curriculum to share the learning with their students; and 3) creating an educational resource for the National Geographic website to be used by teachers everywhere. Noreen’s expedition took her along the Alaskan and British Columbian coast, with visits to Glacier Bay National Park, the Inian Islands, and the famous Sawyer Glacier. It was at Sawyer Glacier, amidst a backdrop of snow-capped mountains, when Ms. Syed bravely made an historic splash into the icy waters, affectionately called the “Polar Plunge.” She admitted, “This was something I would normally never do. So, I asked my students last year if I should do it, and the response was a resounding, ‘Yes!’ Since I am always trying to teach my students to take risks, what better way to do that than to take one myself.” “The only downside to this once-in-a-lifetime academic trip was that I had to miss the first days of the new school year,” she said. “When the Internet connection was strong enough, I kept a blog documenting my adventures.” While British Columbia was a long way from Gill St. Bernard’s, with a desire to connect with her students and with help from fellow Middle School teacher Carrie Johnson, Ms. Syed was able to Skype with all the fifth-graders. Eager to know more about their teacher’s adventures in the Northwest, students were captivated by the details of the ship, delighting in firsthand descriptions of the animal life, including all types of bears, sea lions, seals, humpback whales, and orcas. When asked about her favorite experience, Ms. Syed reminisced, “It was seeing the Northern Lights; this natural occurrence is truly breathtaking.” Ms. Syed returned to GSB in early September with a wealth of new information, new insights, and a zest for sharing, and Gill St. Bernard’s students continue to be beneficiaries of her travels and her abiding commitment to geographic education.

Parent
Volunteerism Parent involvement is essential to maintaining GSB’s strong sense of community. Taking an active role in the daily lives of our students enhances their learning experience, whether it be volunteering on campus, in the classroom, selling concessions in Emmitt Lodge during a game, helping with special events such as Homecoming/Family Day and our Parents’ Association Fashion Event, working behind the scenes of the fall play and spring musical, or cheering for our students on stage and the playing field. We are grateful to the leadership of our parent volunteer groups, including Parents’ Association President Monica Micera, P ’22, Athletics Booster Club Chair Jill Moriarty, P ’16, ’22, and Parent Admission Network (PAN) Chair Stephanie Pendell, P ’22, ’24, ’27, for their groups’ efforts to engage our parent community in meaningful ways while supporting GSB’s students, faculty, and overall mission. A special thank you goes to Casino Night Co-Chairs, Lynn Farscht, P ’21, and Ann Matthews, P ’16, ’18, ’24, and Fashion Event Co-chairs, Nicole Rusas, P ’19, and Joyce Tulenko, P ’19, ’22, along with their volunteer committees, for organizing two remarkable events that brought our parent community together all while supporting our school. Thank you to the many parents who are active members of the GSB community and in their child’s school life. Know it has enriched your child’s GSB experience, and we hope yours as well!

PERFORMING ARTS & COMMUNITY CENTER
FOUNDERS ADDITION
As the student population grew, more dining space was needed, and an addition to Founders was planned and executed at the start of the campaign. This addition mirrors the original dining area in Founders, with post and beam construction and large windows. The basement, which housed fine arts classrooms, was upgraded and another studio/gallery was added below the addition to accommodate the growing department.
Opening with great fanfare on November 24, 2018, was our Delivering the Future Campaign capstone project, the majestic Performing Arts & Community Center (PACC). A reception was hosted in the F.M. Kirby Hall & Gallery for generous campaign donors, who then enjoyed a unique performance in the Matthews Theater featuring over 55 returning alumni, dating back to 1990 and up to the present, joining in song to perform selections from almost three-decades of GSB-produced musicals.

TURF FIELD
For the success of the soccer programs and the addition of lacrosse to the athletics program, a year-round outdoor playing surface was a must. As one of the last schools without a turf field, this became one of the first projects undertaken in the campaign. This splendid field now serves as our home field for varsity boys’ and girls’ soccer and lacrosse, most JV games, and multiple field events, as well as extracurricular and grade level activities for all three divisions.

DELIVERING THE FUTURE CAMPAIGN CONGER ALUMNI HOUSE
Recap
In 2013, unanticipated flooding in The Cottage, which then housed the Alumni and Development Office, caused it to be razed and rebuilt in tandem with the Delivering the Future Campaign. Through the Conger family’s generosity, and several other key donors, approximately one-half of the necessary funds to rebuild the new home was provided. The Conger Alumni House now houses the Office on Institutional Advancement, with headquarters for alumni, parents, advancement, and communications staff.
FIELD HOUSE
Upon determining the ultimate location on campus of the PACC, a new Field House was built to replace the space and functions of the “old gym.” It includes Middle and Lower School physical education and athletics, locker area, and a fitness center for Upper School students/athletes. The new Field House was dedicated in September 2016.

GSB FUND
The GSB Fund, formally Annual Fund, is the foundation upon which our strong financial health is built, while it continues to provide timely resources for enriching today’s programs and curriculum. The Fund ensures that the GSB experience for our current students continues to be transformative in growth and expansion. It was imperative that, during the campaign, the GSB Fund not only remained important, it needed to grow. A $1M goal per year was set, and during the last 5 years, it was surpassed.
Total Raised = $7.3M
ENDOWMENT
Through interest and income earned, the endowment provides funding to the annual operating budget. As the endowment grows, GSB is able to rely less on tuition and secure for future generations of GSB students the opportunities that today’s students enjoy. Endowment gifts were sought throughout the campaign. Through the generosity of our donors, many existing endowed funds increased, and new funds were created. Most of the endowment growth supported need-based financial aid to offset both tuition and non-tuition expenses (like field trips and Spring Units) -- making these more accessible for students who otherwise could not afford to participate.
