FALL 2015 EDITION

Athletic News The Booster Club was formed in the spring of 2003 to support GSB athletics both financially and by encouraging school spirit. For more information about the Booster Club, contact Tim Davis, athletic director, at 908-234-1611, ext. 221.

A NOTE FROM THE ATHLETIC DIRECTOR Entering my first season as director of athletics here at Gill, it was a privilege to be rewarded with championships and athletic excellence. This fall was a successful season for the GSB boys’ soccer team, which finished with 18 wins and only 4 losses. The boys won the Prep B Championship, Skyland Conference Championship and competed in the sectional finals of the state playoffs. They completed the season ranked ninth in the state for non-public schools, and several members of the team garnered individual honors for this historical winning program. The girls’ soccer team posted a .500 record and has a strong nucleus of returning players to contribute in the years to come. Rounding out the fall season, the girls’ tennis team won its respective conference regular season championship and state sectional championship. Finally, the girls’ and boys’ cross-country teams successfully won the Skyland Conference regular season championships and placed third and fourth respectively in the Prep B Championship. GSB girls’ tennis has proven to be a state championship caliber program, winning its fourth straight NJSIAA Non-Public B South Sectional Championship and its fifth Raritan Division crown since joining the Skyland Conference in 2009. This year’s team finished the season with a 15-1 record. The girls were runners-up in the

Prep B Championships, with the team finishing its highest ever in the Somerset County Tournament, with third place. There were a number of individual honors again this year for the tennis team, with all-state accolades to cap this impressive season. In cross country, the boys won their second consecutive Skyland Conference Mountain Division crown after remaining undefeated through the dual meet season. The girls won their first Skyland Conference Mountain Division Championship with an undefeated record against conference foes. The GSB boys’ and girls’ varsity cross country teams have combined for seven major championships in the last five years. Waiting in the pipeline, the junior varsity and Middle School programs are proving ready to contribute in the near future, as evidenced by the undefeated 16-0 season of the JV girls’ tennis team. The Middle School’s fall teams (soccer, cross country and tennis) had a remarkable season as well, with the boys winning the Greater Morris County Middle School Group 1 Championships and finishing the season with a 14-1 record. I would like to congratulate our fall student-athletes and thank them for their hard work and dedication; together they have helped continue a tradition of winning here at Gill. This group has represented our school with excellence on and off the field and has shown respect for opposing teams. From all of us in the GSB Athletic Department, have a safe and happy holiday season; we look forward to seeing you in 2016.

In the Watchung Hills contest, Mrkulic led the scoring with a hat trick, followed by Bednarsky and Brito, who each posted two goals and two assists. Aunger also contributed two assists. Hard Work, Solid Season for Varsity Girls’ Soccer The varsity girls’ soccer squad overcame a rough start to put together some important late-season wins and advance to the quarterfinal round of the NJISAA Prep B Tournament. The girls finished with a solid record of 9-9-1, and with only five players graduating this spring, the team’s younger players gained some valuable experience for competition next fall. The team opened at home with a 3-2 win over South Hunterdon on September 4. The girls showcased some of their offensive talent with Renee Turner ’16 and Erica Phiansunthon ’17 each contributing a goal and an assist, and Hayley Goldin ’19 adding a goal and Lauren Renna ’17 adding an assist. The girls tied their next outing (2-2) against Blair Academy on September 9 and then posted a handful of disappointing losses before hitting their stride in late September. On September 29, the team enjoyed a decisive 6-0 victory over Bound Brook, the first of three successive shut-out wins. Goldin led the scoring with two first-half goals, followed by Jennifer Lowe ’17 with one goal and one assist. The three remaining goals came from Turner, Nyla Mulcahy ’17 and Kajal Mehta ’19, with Renna, Jane O’Connor ’16 and Ava Diggins ’18 contributing assists. The girls continued to dominate into early October, defeating Manville 3-0 on October 1 and besting Rutgers Prep 3-0 in the first round of the Somerset County Tournament on October 3. Over the course of those two games, Goldin led the offense with a combined total of

Goalkeeper Melissa Jean ’17 fended off six shots against Manville and one against Rutgers Prep to keep her opponents scoreless. On October 22, the girls faced a tough loss (8-0) against Montclair Kimberley Academy in the quarterfinal round of the NJISAA Prep B Tournament. The team rallied its forces, however, to finish out the regular season with three successive wins, defeating Bound Brook, Manville and South Hunterdon. On October 23, in a 4-1 victory over Bound Brook, Goldin posted three goals and Mulcahy contributed the fourth. Ryan added two assists and Amelia Kirby ’18 chipped in with an assist of her own. After a 3-0 victory over Manville on October 27, the girls brought October to a close with a decisive 6-1 victory over South Hunterdon on October 30. Pacing the offense was O’Connor with two goals and one assist, followed by Goldin with one goal and one assist, and Mulcahy and Diggins with a goal apiece. On November 2, the girls lost a heartbreaker to Timothy Christian in the first round of the NJSIAA Non Public South B Tournament. The team played strong throughout, dominating possession time and taking more shots on goal. After two overtime periods, however, the team fell on penalty kicks. Looking ahead to next season, the team will miss the contributions of this year’s five graduating seniors:

5-6 Soccer Builds Skills, Teamwork The 5-6 coed soccer team comprised 14 players in grade six and 16 in grade five. The team worked hard to learn new skills and fine-tune existing ones.
