SPRING 2015 EDITION

Athletic News The Booster Club was formed in the spring of 2003 to support GSB athletics both financially and by encouraging school spirit. For more information about the Booster Club, contact Tim Davis, athletic director, at 908-234-1611, ext. 223.

A NOTE FROM THE OUTGOING ATHLETIC DIRECTOR As I transition into a new role at Gill St. Bernard’s, a quick but sincere “thank you” to some folks who have made my ten years as your athletic director such an enjoyable and rewarding experience: Thank you to our faculty and staff for finding time at the end of their busy days to regularly attend our contests. Our students notice and appreciate the interest the faculty takes in their lives outside the classroom. Thank you to our extraordinary operations team. Tony and his guys keep our facilities in impeccable condition and are always receptive when we need their assistance… even at a moment’s notice! Thank you to our administration and board of trustees for recognizing the value that a high level athletic program brings to an independent school and for giving us the support and the resources that are necessary to maintain it. Thank you to our full-time Athletic Department staff, who devote countless hours behind the scenes to make sure that our student-athletes enjoy a positive experience. Most of their work goes unnoticed but it makes a huge difference. Thank you to the GSB Athletic Booster Club, a remarkable group of men and women who set aside sport-specific interests and agendas in order to help raise spirit and funding that benefit all of our teams and athletes. Thank you to the parents of our student-athletes for making the sacrifices necessary to support not only their own children, but their children’s teammates as well. Thank you to all of our coaches…an incredibly impressive group of roughly 45 talented and experienced professionals who have collectively established an athletic culture here that few thought was possible a short while ago. And of course, thank you to the student-athletes, past and present, who wear the GSB uniform. The championships and school records speak for themselves, but the way the students conduct themselves with honor, grace and class has made me most proud. For the last ten years, the best part of my professional day has been watching our kids compete. I hope you enjoy reading about the successes of our spring season and I look forward to seeing many of you at games, matches and races in the fall!

Record-Setting Season for Varsity Baseball The varsity baseball team had a fantastic season, setting a school record with 21 wins. In the second game of the season, Cameron Miller ’17 pitched a no hitter against Rutgers Prep, allowing only one baserunner the entire game. The Knights won 11-0, led offensively by Daniel Sivolella ’16, who went 2-3 with four RBIs, and Daniel Spear ’15, who was 3-3 with a homerun.

Later in the season, the Knights earned a big win in the Prep B Semifinal game 8-7 over Princeton Day School. They were led by Robert Berman ’15 who pitched four strong innings in relief and also went 3-4. The Knights were down 7-3 entering the bottom of the seventh. With the bases loaded and two outs, Spear came to bat and hit a walk-off grand slam to win the game. In the first two rounds of the Non-Public B Tournament, senior Daniel Brownstein went a combined 5-for-5, leading the team to wins over Doane Academy 11-0 and Roselle Catholic 8-4, before they ultimately lost 10-0 in the South Jersey Semifinals to a strong Holy Spirit team. Andrew Noll ‘16, Neil Ianniello ’16, Tyler Starr ’17 and Anthony Lake ’18 also made valuable contributions to the historic season.

JV Baseball Enjoys Strong Season The JV baseball team also had a very successful spring, finishing with an overall record of eight wins and five losses. Neil Ianniello ’16, Andrew Noll ’16, Evan Druskin ’17 and Ryan Fucci ’17 were the mainstays of a pitching staff that was extremely effective all season. Ronald “Joe” Johnson ’18 and Anthony Lake ’18 shared the catching duties, while Tyler Kwaak ’16 solidified the outfield. Tyler Starr ’17, James Grant ’16 and Scott Begane ’18 anchored an infield that was one of the best in the conference. With the experience these players were able to accrue, they will be looking to contribute more consistently at the varsity level next spring.

Impressive Play from Varsity Boys’ Tennis The varsity boys’ tennis team completed an exciting and encouraging spring season. The squad finished with a 6-9 record against some very stiff Skyland Conference competition. One highlight regular season match came against Warren Hills. With the team score tied at 2-2 after the first four matches, all eyes turned to the second singles match. Marc Orazietti ’16, the team leader in wins, made a brilliant comeback to win his match in three sets and give the Knights the victory. The team enjoyed another outstanding win over Somerville 5-0 where M. Orazietti, George Harris ’16 and William Conlan ’16 won their singles matches, and the duos of Ivor Guest ’15/Mike Urowsky ’16 and Ruben Kivits ’17/Nicholas Ross ’16 won on the doubles side. The boys also performed very well in the Prep B Tournament held at WardlawHartridge. M. Orazietti advanced to the final round at second singles after two outstanding wins in the quarterfinals and semifinals. Other players that advanced to the semifinals were Harris at third singles, Guest and Urowsky at first doubles and Kivits and Ross at second doubles. Another player that made a big contribution to the team’s success was freshman William Orazietti, participating in nine of the team’s 15 matches. With only one graduating senior, the team should be stronger next spring.

George Harris ’16.

JV Boys Lacrosse Goes 8-2 The Gill St. Bernard’s JV boys’ lacrosse team had an excellent second season, finishing with a record of 8-2. The team steadily improved as the season progressed, losing two games early, and then reeling off seven straight wins to finish the season. In the middle of the winning streak, the team earned a hard fought victory over rival Morristown-Beard School, 10-9. Attackman Nicholas Cooper ’17 and midfielders Michael DelPriore ’16 and Kevin Brito ’17 did an amazing job controlling the offense, while long stick midfielder Devin Hohman ’17, defenseman Robert Haversat ’18 and goalie John “Will” Dadouris ’17 were dominant on defense. The second to last game was a tough, come-from-behind, overtime victory at Princeton Day School, 11-10. Down 4-0 early in the game, the team fought its way back for the OT win. Middle School Baseball This year’s middle school baseball squad went 3-6 with big wins coming against Wardlaw-Hartridge, The Hun School and rival Rutgers Prep. The winning pitchers in those games were Jack Petraitis ’20, Michael Taylor ’20 and Brian Mueller ’19, respectively. Mueller also hit an inside-the-park homerun against Hun. Edward McCarthy ’20 did an excellent job all year long behind the plate, allowing very few passed balls and shutting down the opponent’s running game. The Knights also featured a formidable infield with Nicholas Policano ’20, William Goldmark ’19 and Brian Neville ’19 turning a number of double plays in support of the pitching staff. Brandon McCall ’20, Andrew Lutz ’20 and Luke Mariak ’20 effectively patrolled the outfield and also came through with some big hits in crucial situations. Sixth graders Owen Hand ’21 and Matthew Rossiter ’21 were called up to round out the roster, and they played very well. Rossiter notched his first hit against a strong Bernardsville team and Hand slugged a single and a double against the son of former big league pitcher Al Leiter. With many of these players returning, the MS Baseball team anticipates a strong season next spring.

Middle School Softball The Middle School softball team focused on rebuilding this spring. A combination of low numbers and difficult spring weather meant that the team was only able to play two games, against Newark Academy and Somerville Middle School. The girls played hard and were able to make improvements throughout the season. The team members were: Ilana Druskin ’19, Olivia Escousse ’19, Lily Fischer ’19, Carolyn Herrlin ’19, Allison Keeler ’19, Ryleigh Marcus ’19, Olivia Showell ’19, Sophia Stil ’19, Kerry Colford ’20, Callie Silvey ’21 and Emma Turse ’22.
