17 Dates to Remember

From the Headmaster In terms of time, one element of Einstein’s Theory of Relativity has often been tested, and proven in schools. When a class is interesting and engaging, time appears to accelerate. As the old adage goes, time flies when you are having fun. However, when a topic or task is difficult, the reverse is true. Between the back-to-school excitement of September and the flurry of year-end activities and events in May and June, the year has gone by very quickly; it is a testament to just how successful the year has been. Indeed, it feels like it was just yesterday when my daughter, Dylan, started kindergarten at GSB. Last Sunday, she and her classmates received their diplomas as members of the Class of 2014. It was a bittersweet moment for me, as this chapter in our lives comes to an end. Where did the time go? It certainly went by incredibly fast, and I am sure that many of our parents feel the same way. While 2013-14 was not without its challenges, especially given the winter weather, it was a very good year for the school. From academics to the arts and athletics, students across all divisions have achieved a great deal of success throughout the year. The 2014 college matriculation list (see back cover), boasting an impressive array of colleges and universities, is one that every member of the GSB community may be proud of. School spirit is high, and it was gratifying to hear our Commencement speakers share their feelings about the school. As we head into the months of June, July and August, preparations for the 2014-15 school year have already begun. Summer is a time of additional work on the campus and our facilities and operations teams have already begun multiple projects. The final touches are now being made to the newly built Conger Alumni House and an outdoor all-weather sport court. Both are welcome additions to our school.

Headmaster Sid Rowell.

This summer, we will also welcome two new administrators to our administrative team: Middle School Director Kyle Armstrong and Director of Admission and Financial Aid Sarah Rowland. I am very excited about the prospect of working with both and feel that each brings tremendous experience to these important leadership positions. I would like to thank all of our faculty and staff members, as well as the members of our board of trustees, for their tireless efforts throughout the school year. The commitment they demonstrate on a daily basis to Gill St. Bernard’s is amazing. I would also like to thank all of our parents for their continued support of the school. Congratulations once again to the Class of 2014. I am confident all of our graduates will continue to achieve success in college and beyond. Further, I look forward to hearing from them in the years to come when they return to visit. I wish all a safe and enjoyable summer. See you in September. Warm regards,

Sid Rowell 1.

Godspell Receives Two Rising Star Awards in Paper Mill Playhouse Competition

June 2014

Canada Awarded Chair of Excellence in Teaching at Commencement

GSB’s spring 2014 production, Godspell, was formally recognized for outstanding excellence in the following two categories at the 19th annual Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards on June 3: • Outstanding Costuming Achievement Paul H. Canada and Beth Holland P ’12 • Outstanding Hair and Make-up Achievement Lee Amoroso P ’11, ’13, ’19 and Venus Nedd P ’06, ’09 The recipient of 18 Rising Star Awards since 2007—including two for Outstanding Overall Production of a Musical with The Secret Garden (2008) and The Mystery of Edwin Drood (2012)—GSB ranked among the top-seven New Jersey public, independent and parochial schools competing in this year’s program, and also received a final nomination in the Outstanding Scenic Achievement (Canada, Kevin Kotch, Laura Ludlum P ’01, ’03, ’05 and Shannon Ludlum ’03) category. According to Canada—performing arts chair—the inspiration behind the costumes in Gill’s first-ever “steampunk” themed musical came from the opening number of the show, “Tower of Babel.” “As I began to explore the ‘steampunk’ theme,” said Canada, “I realized that setting the production in an Old West traveling carnival and medicine show would serve the musical in a multitude of ways. Not only would it work for ‘Tower of Babel,’ but each ensemble member could easily be identified as a ‘carnival type’—a sharpshooter, fortune-teller, snake charmer, puppeteer, chorus girls, belly dancer, male impersonator and lion tamer—to bring a fresh perspective to the well-known biblical stories and parables.”

This year’s Outstanding Costuming Achievement Award represents Canada and Holland’s third together since 2011, as well as Canada’s seventh overall in the past eight years. Meanwhile, Amoroso and Nedd have received final nominations in the Outstanding Hair and Make-up Achievement category for three straight years.

Performing Arts Chair Paul H. Canada was presented the 2014 SBS Chair of Excellence in Teaching Award by last year’s recipient Middle School science teacher Teri Cosentino and Headmaster Sid Rowell.

Gill St. Bernard’s Performing Arts Chair Paul H. Canada is credited by parents, alumni, co-workers and students as having played a critical role in the heightened success of Gill’s growing theater program. In recognition of his leadership, creativity, enthusiasm, sensitivity and utmost professionalism in the arts, Canada was presented the St. Bernard’s School (SBS) Chair of Excellence in Teaching Award at this year’s Commencement on June 1. Since 1990, Canada has directed nearly four dozen comedies, dramas, mysteries and musicals, as well as numerous Middle School and community theater presentations on the GSB stage, captivating both audiences and critics alike with his expansive skills in set design, costume design, musical composition and more. The epitome of excellence and artistry at Gill St. Bernard’s School, Canada has received seven Paper Mill Playhouse Rising Star Awards for Outstanding Costuming Achievement in the past eight years (2007- She Loves Me; 2008- The Secret Garden; 2010- Kiss Me Kate; 2011- A Little Night Music; 2012- The Mystery of Edwin Drood; 2013- Little Women; 2014- Godspell). “His dedication to the program is obvious in the many awards it has received,” one family shared in its letter recommending Canada for the 2014 SBS Chair of Excellence prize. Another added, “Paul has a natural and endearing way of working with students and volunteer parents to ensure that the highest quality work is achieved.” 4.

Three Board of Trustees Members Retire After many years of service, three members of the school’s board participated in their final meeting in May. With each bringing a unique perspective and expertise, the three have been invaluable in their service to Gill St. Bernard’s School and all have been voted as Honorary Trustees. Samuel Corliss, Jr. served his first term as a member of the board between 1995 and 1999, and (L. to r.) Corliss has spent six years as a member of the board of St. Margaret’s Episcopal School in San Juan Capistrano. He currently volunteers his time with Padres Unidos as well, a not-for-profit organization in Santa Ana that engages in providing parent support and pre-school/ kindergarten readiness programs to members of the Latino population. Corliss holds a M.B.A. in finance from the University of Michigan Stephen M. Ross School of Business as well as a B.A. in economics from Trinity College.

In addition, he has worked with the Communications and Marketing Department to establish an online social media presence, develop GSB identity guidelines, execute the first of several parent focus groups and create an inaugural senior and senior-parent survey. O’Leary has also played a significant role in GSB’s capital campaign and building and grounds committees. O’Leary began his career working in the entertainment industry. In 1981, he founded the staging and production company, The RJO Group, which has ultimately transformed into a multichannel creative communications agency specializing in corporate live events, sales training, experiential marketing and disease state simulator experiences. FACULTY NEWS Retiring Faculty, Staff and Administrators Congratulations and best of luck to the following faculty, staff and administrators, who will retire this month after devoting years of service to Gill St. Bernard’s School (GSB's retirees will also be featured in the summer 2014 issue of "GSB Alumni Magazine." ) : Joanne Bodnar came to GSB as a Lower School art teacher in 1999. Since then, her creativity and expertise has led to increased enthusiasm among many students who often encounter a wide range of lessons that aim to promote cross-curricular learning in the art room. Even when she retires, Bodnar will continue to add to her already impressive art portfolio. In addition, she plans to visit with family, experience travel and actively volunteer her time. Matthew Huber first joined GSB in 1992, and spent two years directing students and teachers grades pre-k through six on the Bernardsville campus known as Stronghold. In 1994, he was named GSB’s inaugural Middle School director and has since devoted his career to improving the curriculum and prominence of Gill St. Bernard’s School. Also a Middle School Latin teacher throughout his 22-year tenure, Huber says he will most miss the inclusive, warm and rigorous environment found campus wide at Gill. In retirement, Huber and his wife, Nancy, plan to devote more time toward their grandchildren. Linda MacDonald has been a teacher’s aide with the GSB Early Childhood program for the past 26 years, beginning with the inception of Gill’s first-ever class for three-yearold students in 1987. Since then, MacDonald has offered assistance to four Lower School teachers, grades Primary 3 through Primary 4, including Ellen Fitzpatrick, Ellen McCann, Ellen Ryan and—most recently—Alison Passerelle. She and her husband, Gordon, will retire to South Carolina to be near their son Mark, daughter-in-law Amy and two grandsons Landry and Paiden.

Barbara Ripton began her Gill St. Bernard’s tenure in 1986, working alongside former teachers Kathy Maisano and Ronna Storm to co-pilot a language arts program for ninth grade students. When the program was dissolved, Ripton began teaching regular Upper School English classes, grades nine through 12, and later accepted a position as chair of the English Department in 2002. While grateful for the opportunity to watch her own three daughters—Jessica ’96, Sarah ’99 and Erin ’01—grow and flourish as “GSB Lifers,” Ripton says she is even more appreciative of the time she has spent working with colleagues to bring literature to life in the classroom. As she retires, Ripton looks forward to spending more time with her grandchildren and daughters, traveling often, taking piano lessons and pursuing other interests. Juliana Ruby joined the GSB community as data manager in 1991, after more than two decades of work in publishing. Ruby credits the desire to impact others as an overall determining factor in her decision to change careers. Since joining the school’s development team, Ruby has taken personal ownership of the digital fundraising software program, Raiser’s Edge, and sees enhancements made to campus each year as a direct reflection of her work. Ruby is most eager to be free from deadlines, schedules and restrictions upon retiring. Furthering Their Education Associate Director of College Guidance David Lee recently obtained a M.A. in sociology and education at the Teachers College of Columbia University. Lee also holds a B.A. from Drew University. David deWolfe, Middle School math teacher at Gill St. Bernard’s School, earned a Master of Arts in educational leadership from The College of New Jersey this past spring. DeWolfe holds a B.S. from Stony Brook University as well. 12.
