12 Dates to Remember

From the Headmaster Winter has arrived in Gladstone and as of now, shows little sign of departing any time soon. The past two weeks of snow, sleet, ice and bitter cold serve as a stark reminder of the nature of the season. I want to thank everyone in the GSB community for their patience and flexibility as we deal with the many disruptions. I have grown as weary of using our Honeywell Service as all are of receiving my many phone calls. Snow days, however, do not necessarily mean a lost day at Gill St. Bernard’s. We ask our faculty to be prepared for weather related closings and have academic assignments posted on KnightSite to assure that teaching continues even on days when the campus is closed. While far from ideal, it is a helpful approach that we are continuing to refine. I foresee a time when entire lessons will be taught online at each grade level as soon as next year. This issue of the GSB News contains the 2014-15 first semester Headmaster’s and Honors Lists. Earning a place on either list requires tremendous diligence and hard work. I am pleased to see that so many of our students are able to achieve this high standard. Of course, I encourage all of them to keep up the good work and hope that even more of our students will make the list in June. Recently, I announced some changes to the senior leadership team. Honor Taft will be joining our school community as the new director of the Lower School, and David Pasquale will be taking on the new role of dean of student life in the Upper School. A search has begun for our next

athletic director and I plan to complete that process by April. Changes in school leadership, whether involving new faces or existing ones taking on a different position, are normal and healthy in schools. It allows for “fresh eyes” and the opportunity for further growth as we continue to become a stronger educational community. With the cold temperatures, it may seem that spring is far off. However, March will soon be here and with it, the opportunity for everyone to get outside and enjoy the sunshine. Until then, between athletic tournaments and postseason athletic competition, the spring musical (March 5-8) and other school events; we have much to enjoy to help us reach that day in good spirits. Warm regards,

A Celebration of Freedom The Lower School recognized the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., as well as other prominent civil rights activists, on January 14. During the assembly in Evans Hall, students gathered to share both their dreams and interpretations of the word “freedom” with fellow classmates. In addition, they recited lyrics about freedom as expressed by popular poets and musicians including Louis Armstrong.

STUDENT NEWS Gingerbread House Contest Captures Creativity

(L. to r.) Jolie Loeber ’15, Landon Braemer ’17 and Sadie Loeber ’17 help complete GSB’s gingerbread house.

January-February 2015

Flik Independent School Dining services challenged client schools nationwide to a gingerbread house-making competition this past December. Through a collaboration with Chef Anthony Abate and his staff, Sarah Isusi’s Upper School art students successfully recreated Princess Elsa’s ice palace from the Disney movie Frozen. The group held nothing back and truly “let it go” to produce an award-winning masterpiece that was selected from the student assisted category for its creativity and innovation, quality of detail, superior photographs and overall structure. GSB’s Flik team was awarded $500 as first prize, and proudly donated its winnings to the Fine Arts Department at Gill.

GSB Fifth Grader Looks to Inspire Others through New York Times Blog In late December, The New York Times’ “Motherlode” blog featured personal stories from children, teenagers and families committed to helping charities. The words of Karyne Brown ’22, a member of the Gill St. Bernard’s Half the Sky club, appeared on the site on December 30. She discussed the ways in which Middle School teacher Joanna Hayes has inspired her to work with the nonprofit organization BlinkNow. Brown shared:

“My social studies teacher, Mrs. Joanna Hayes, is one of my biggest role models. She told us about Maggie Doyne, who started an organization called BlinkNow. BlinkNow works to provide an education and a loving, caring home for orphaned, impoverished and at-risk children in Nepal. I joined a club Mrs. Hayes started, Half the Sky, to fight for equality and women’s rights. Every year we have a bake sale to raise money for BlinkNow. Our club went to hear Ms. Doyne speak. She had two girls from Nepal with her. They said that it was because of Ms. Doyne and BlinkNow that they could get an education. If it wasn’t for Mrs. Hayes, I wouldn’t even begin to think to do this. I think one of the problems with society today is that people spend more money on Christmas presents than they donate to charities.”

STUDENT LIFE RECAP Teachers Team Up to Present Interactive Lesson A unique collaboration between Upper School teachers Candace Pryor Brown, Derek Martin and Margery Schiesswohl, the Class of 2017 dove head first into the Civil War period during an American History Humanities presentation in the Theater on December 18. “The purpose of this program was to give the students a chance to learn history from the perspective of the people who were living it every day,” explained Schiesswohl. During a special slideshow presentation, students explored art and music from the 1860s. Afterward, the six members of Gill’s acting I class read excerpts from famous poets including Walt Whitman and Stephen Crane, and performed a scene from the Tom Taylor play, Our American Cousin—the same scene during which John Wilkes Booth successfully assassinated President Abraham Lincoln.

(F. to b.) Catarina “Caty” Matthews ’16 and Helena Digney ’18 perform a scene from playwright Tom Taylor’s Our American Cousin.

The sophomores then broke into two separate groups to attend a clothing demonstration led by Performing Arts Chair Paul H. Canada and an interactive lesson on social etiquette and the Virginia reel, a 17th century folk dance, with Schiesswohl. “Presenting history in this type of forum gives students a chance to make connections between historical events and quality of life during a given period,” Schiesswohl added. “In short, the students were able to explore the human side of history.”

Class of 2019 Events Showcase School Spirit As part of a new initiative to encourage school spirit within rising eighth graders, the GSB Admission Office hosted a special pizza party for the Class of 2019 in Founders Hall on December 19. The party took place in between Gill’s varsity basketball doubleheader and included the unveiling of a class t-shirt designed by Susanne Mundt ’19. Additional events, including a potential bonfire by the Scout Cabin, will be held throughout the school year to promote fun and class spirit in the eighth grade at Gill. (L. to r.) Middle School Director Kyle Armstrong and eighth grade student Susanne Mundt present the custom designed Class of 2019 t-shirt.

COLLEGE SPOTLIGHT Sam Weisman ’14 Sam Weisman Class of 2014 College of Charleston Major: Business Administration with a Concentration in Entrepreneurship Investment Club Member, Entrepreneurship Club Member and Pledge for Class President of Kappa Sigma Fraternity Q. Entering college is all about new experiences. Can you tell us about one or two that have really stood out for you since entering school earlier this fall? A. One thing that has stood out to me: finding that perfect balance between school work and the social aspect of college. I believe that most people would agree with me on that. Also, what surprised me most about college was the lack of a structured schedule. Every day is different, which makes things very interesting. Q. What do you like the best about your college so far? A. College has been amazing so far. The amount of freedom has to be my favorite part. It makes you feel like a grown up. It is exactly what I expected my freshman year experience would be like and it has helped me to become more independent. Q. What’s your favorite class and why? A. I was actually surprised that my favorite class last semester was biology. Because the College of Charleston is a liberal arts school, we are required to take classes in all different studies. I decided to take biology as a science requirement. I didn’t expect to like it as much as I did, but I found it super interesting and the professors clearly have an amazing understanding of the topic. Q. How have your education and experiences at GSB helped to prepare you for this first year of college? A. Gill exposed me to things outside of the classroom that have helped me easily adapt to college. After 15 years at GSB I didn’t know how my transition to a new place would go, but I really do feel that Gill has helped me make that transition easier.

Gill St. Bernard’s School • St. Bernard’s Road • Gladstone, NJ 07934

Sam Weisman ’14 (r.) with the College of Charleston mascot, Clyde the Cougar.

Q. What do you miss the most since starting at college? A. I’ll never forget the friends and teachers I met at GSB. It was my second home for so long that I miss everyone that contributed to my success at Gill. In addition to that, my mom’s cooking is much better than Kraft Easy Mac, so I miss that as well. Q. If you could offer the Class of 2015 any advice, what would you say? A. Appreciate every day you have left at Gill, as you’ll never find somewhere as special, with such a tight knit community. But, also get excited for the next chapter of your life.
