Program Dates, Hours & Extended Day! Hi-Hills Day Camp prides itself on offering flexible programs. Schedules can be customized to fit the needs of the campers and their parents. Across eleven summer weeks, Hi-Hills Day Camp offers a wide variety of programs for children ages 3-15. Whether you are looking for enrichment, academics, sports, fine arts or traditional camp programs, there is something for everyone at Hi-Hills Day Camp. Hi-Hills Day Camp offers the most flexible summer programs in the area. Tailor your schedule to meet the needs of your child and your family. Combine academics and sports with traditional day camp activities. Participate in an art program one week, a math clinic the next, and then back to the traditional day camp. We build our programs around the convenience of our camp families!

Kyle Kirst, Summit High School Boys’ Lacrosse Coach Lacrosse! Come and learn the fundamentals of shooting, passing, dodging, offensive and defensive principles and face-offs. Learn the basic skills of all positions. Whether you are picking up a stick for the first time or have played for several years, award– winning coach Kyle Kirst and others will help make you a better player with their years of expertise. Camp will end after lunch at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, July 24.

At Lacrosse Goalie Camp, Coach Kyle Kirst and his assistants will bring your skills up to the next level. You will work on the fundamentals of the goaltender position, including communication with teammates, safe techniques, stick handling and passing. Goalies will be videotaped and analyzed by our coaching staff. No matter what your age or experience, you’ll learn drills to help you excel as a goaltender. Camp will end after lunch at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, July 17.

Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR Certification / Recertification Certified Aquatics Instructor Lifeguard training teaches participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drowning and injuries. Prerequisites: Minimum age of 15. Swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl and breaststroke only demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive seven to 10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within one minute, 40 seconds. Tread water for two minutes using only the legs. Candidate will place arms under the armpits. Certification Requirement: Attend all class sessions. Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities. Demonstrate competency in all final rescue scenarios. Pass both Section 1 – CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid and Section 2 – Lifeguarding Skills final written exams with a minimum of 80 percent. Certificate Issued and Validity Period: Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/ AED: Two years.

Maestro Soccer “Striker – Keeper” Camp Jim Buchanan, Director of Coaching, Maestro Soccer Maestro Soccer will run five days of intensive training for all players looking to improve their goal scoring or goalkeeping ability! All aspects of attacking play, such as crossing and finishing, long range shooting, one time finishing and heading will all be covered in this five day, all-inclusive camp. Goalkeepers will be instructed in all areas of their position: handling, diving, dealing with crosses, angels and much more! This unique camp will train strikers and goalies separately for the first part of the day, then training groups are combined to create goalies versus strikers in motivating and realistic training scenarios! You do not have to be a full-time goalie or striker to attend. Any player looking to improve their goal scoring or goalkeeping skills can sign up. Players will be grouped by ability, age and gender. Full-day campers have pool time and lunch included in the cost.

Maestro Soccer HS Girls’ Camp Mike Williams, Regional Coaching Director, Maestro Soccer A new camp for 2015 specifically aimed to develop and prepare the female high school soccer player. Run by GSB varsity girls’ head soccer coach Mike Williams, this camp will provide a variety of intensive training situations to prepare players for the high school season. With video analysis, technical, tactical and soccerspecific conditioning all included in the camp, this is a first-rate camp experience to be the best possible preparation for high school soccer. First, you will learn how to use your mountain bike safely and efficiently while touring several park locations in New Jersey. Second, you will learn about proper nutrition and hydration before, during and after our biking experiences, ensuring that you have good energy levels and a healthy state of mind to enjoy mountain biking. Finally, you will gain an appreciation for the environment by learning how to maintain trails. The program includes a trip to Manasquan, NJ, for a cookout and a day trip to Allaire Park. Photography will be an important component, also, to document the wonderful learning experiences and memories you will have.

Of course, the most important aspect of the program is “safety first,” and we will always have two experienced adult mountain bike riders with first aid training on the trails with students at all times.

Looking for a way to improve your basic softball fundamentals while preparing for the next level? If so, this softball clinic is the perfect program! Run by the Gill St. Bernard’s varsity softball coach, Nicole Spiotta, this clinic will help each player on an individual level break down the basic fundamentals of the sport to improve their batting, hitting, fielding and base running skills. Furthermore, the players will learn the strategic side of the game and develop a mental aspect of the sport in a team setting. Coach Nicole’s passion for the sport provides her with the experiences of collegiate coaching, team training, individual lessons and youth clinics. Amy and David Southerland, Award-Winning GSB Music Directors IMTE Jr. is a musical theatre workshop, led by Gill St. Bernard’s School music directors Amy and David Southerland and designed to help middle school students improve performance skills and self–confidence. Acting, improvisation, dance, vocal technique, monologues, scene study and more will be highlighted as they work with musical theatre repertoire to be presented in a showcase on Friday at 2:30 p.m. Lunch is provided daily. Dance – LaChaney’s Dance Academy LaShonda Chaney, Founder, LaChaney’s Dance & Music Academy www.lachaney.com Director of LaChaney’s Dance Academy and former NBA Nets dancer, LaShonda Chaney, will be bringing an exciting program to young campers—both boys and girls—to learn the fundamentals of dance. Chaney will emphasize progressing technically; building strength and flexibility; increasing coordination; choreography, jazz and hip-hop; and most importantly having FUN together. Additional class time in dance history, anatomy, terminology, performance skills and dance composition will make a varied day for young dancers. Two or three sessions of arts and crafts time each week will help the young dancers create minor costume pieces.

From learning to sew a button, to reading a pattern and operating a sewing machine, campers will experience the art of sewing in a creative environment. Students will focus predominantly on literary and writing concepts, such as grammar, sentence structure, understanding themes, motifs, symbols, etc. While this course focuses largely on the above skills, other valuable topics will be addressed to guide the student toward success in his/her first academic year of their high school career. Such topics will be the importance of time management, note-taking, study skills and organizational techniques. All ability levels are welcome. Although there will be minimal assigned homework, the overall atmosphere will be relaxed and without grades.

Geometry Ed Brown, GSB Upper School Teacher In an intensive six-week program, students will complete a full course of Euclidean geometry including formal proofs with a focus on skills and techniques that are required in higher mathematics courses and on standardized tests. Special emphasis is placed on the types of problems that students will encounter on the PSAT and SAT exams. Cooperative learning will be used to encourage the development of communication, reasoning and problem-solving skills. Course credit and advancement to algebra II and trigonometry will be given to Gill St. Bernard’s School students who attain a B- or better in this summer course. Course credit may also be available to students from other schools. Pre-requisite: algebra I. No class on Friday, July 3.

Little Scholars

Spend the summer outside! Students will spend half of the session on the beautiful Gill St. Bernard’s School campus exploring stream ecology, taking short hikes and learning the basics of photography. Woodworking will also be a part of the adventure; a project will involve carving your own personal walking stick! Outdoor ethics, travel, safety and survival skills will be addressed. This six–day course includes a day trip to Ort pond for fishing, boating and a BBQ, and culminates in a three-day, two-night (tent only) camping trip in the New Jersey Pinelands, complete with a kayak day trip! Campus lunches, camping meals, camping fees, boat rentals and transportation are all included. (Minimum number of participants: 14; Maximum: 17. $50.00 late fee applied after June 1.)

Math Refresher for Ninth Graders Takisha Sulton, GSB Upper School Teacher Incoming ninth graders who are about to enter algebra I or geometry will want to take this refresher course to ensure that their skills are ready for the new school year. A variety of math and study topics will be covered, including time management, tips for course improvement, note-taking, study skills, test anxiety and more. Math topics will include pre-algebra and early algebra concepts and calculator skills. Students must bring a TI-83 or TI-84 calculator to class each day. Research Skills and Writing an Essay Linda Park, GSB Upper School Teacher and Chris Henderson, Grant Writer This course offers students the opportunity to gather information, build a strong thesis statement and produce an essay that reflects their interests. Over the course of this one-week program, students will research and write a fiveparagraph essay on current events or a popular cultural topic of their choosing. Students will learn necessary research techniques and basic project-writing skills including constructing an outline, essay structure, proper citation, editing and revising. Students will conduct research at the Gill St. Bernard’s School Library and online to produce a well-structured essay. Through this full sequence of process research and writing, students will strengthen those skills they need to write interesting and informative essays in high school and college. Take the next step in your aviation journey. In this five-day class you will learn more complex aircraft systems and how they work together. Grumpy Monkey Designs Take the first step into the exciting world of aviation. In this four-day class you will learn what makes airplanes fly and how they work. Minecraft Ryan Roque, GSB Director of Technology Minecraft is the highly popular sandbox game that allows players to explore and build using resources gathered in the world. Each element of the world is made up of blocks that represent the resources necessary for their survival. From dirt to wood, students can harvest these items to build massive constructions and elaborate contraptions—all while working together as a team. Instructors will facilitate organization and operate as “Game Masters” to make sure each student’s ideas can be fully realized in the Minecraft world.

Drone Camp Grumpy Monkey Designs Drones! They are making headlines, but what are they really all about? What makes drones fly autonomously? See for yourself in our Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) Camp, where campers will learn and have fun at the same time. Campers will construct a drone from a kit, learn about its onboard hardware and learn how it functions. Campers will also look at the software required to run drones and cover how to program its software. Participants will simulate a fictitious mission and program the drone to fly the mission. FAA rules and regulations, UAV pre-flight and safety and maintaining a logbook for building and flying the UAV will all be explored. Minimum of five participants. Takeaway is a micro quad.

The camp is minutes off US-206, approximately 5 miles from the center of Chester, NJ, 15 minutes from the junction of highways 287 and 78, and less than 30 minutes from Morristown center (to the northeast), the International Trade Zone in southern Morris County (to the northwest), Somerville (to the southeast) and Hackettstown (to the west.)
