Best of both worlds - Education and fun! Across eleven summer weeks, Hi Hills offers a wide variety of programs for children ages 3-16. Whether you are looking for enrichment, academics, sports, fine arts or traditional camp programs, there is something for everyone at Hi Hills. For example, a camper could take a science enrichment camp in the morning and then enjoy the afternoon swimming and playing with friends in a Hi Hills halfday program. Combine academics and sports with day camp activities. Participate in an art program one week, a math clinic the next, and then back to day camp. We build our programs around the convenience of our camp families! This is a unique mix of enrichment and day camp activities not available at most camps! Hi Hills prides itself on offering flexible programs. Schedules can be customized to fit the needs of the campers and their families.

Staff The people who are responsible for making your child’s summer are the camp staff. They provide the activities, the games, the events and all of the other fun that makes camp just that: camp. A staff member’s job is to motivate a child’s life in a positive manner. They need to have the will, the mindset and, most importantly, the training to do so. As ACA members, our staff are responsible for attending three days of orientation prior to the beginning of camp. Each training day focuses on a variety of topics such as safety procedures, meeting individual needs of campers while managing a group as a whole and communicating to the camp community we have developed here at Hi Hills. In congruence with our orientation topics, our staff attends a professional development day hosted by our directors to ensure the message of the summer and provide the staff with further details on the summer to come. The majority of our staff are currently educators or studying in the field of education. This nurturing and teaching mindset already instilled in our staff, combined with our staff training and the Hi Hills mission, provide your campers with the best staff ever.
Highlights and Experiences At Hi Hills we provide our campers with a unique experience, one that certainly provides them with the best summer ever. We offer more than just camp – we offer an experience. A camper’s experience will be filled with fun activities such as archery and swimming, but also with life and social skills such as character building. Hi Hills understands the importance of skills such as self-confidence, work ethic and tenacity. Our #BeBetterMovement provides campers with these life essentials daily through weekly themes and positive camaraderie followed by activity reinforcement.
Mission Statement At Hi Hills, the emphasis is on overall development. In a relaxed atmosphere, campers are encouraged to explore a wide variety of activities. Our varied programs are planned to meet the needs of each age group from 3 to 16. Instruction is provided with attention to each camper as an individual. Creativity and expression are encouraged as well as self-improvement in physical activities. Campers are helped to develop environmental awareness and learn to appreciate their natural surroundings on our 208-acre campus. Although camp is a learning experience in many ways, we also believe it is a place where children should just be able to have some plain, old-fashioned fun!

John Taeschler, GSB Upper School Science Teacher This six week course covers a full year of Chemistry concepts for credit. Students will use their knowledge of chemistry to broaden understanding of aspects of their natural lives. Through analyzing news articles and interpreting implications of new scientific technology, students will use the web as a resource to improve scientific understanding. Through effective communication of lab results and scientific information to their peers, students will perform basic laboratory activities and provide critical analysis of their results. College Admissions Workshop: Now You’re in the College Process and You Need Help! Kerri Small, GSB Director of College Guidance

Geometry Ed Brown, GSB Upper School Math Teacher In an intensive six-week program, students will complete a full course of Euclidean geometry including formal proofs with a focus on skills and techniques that are required in higher mathematics courses and on standardized tests. Special emphasis is placed on the types of problems that students will encounter on the PSAT and SAT exams. Cooperative learning will be used to encourage the development of communication, reasoning and problem-solving skills. Course credit and advancement to Algebra II and Trigonometry will be given to Gill St. Bernard’s School students who attain a B- or better in this summer course. Course credit may also be available to students from other schools. Pre-requisite: Algebra I.

Looking for extra support with the college process? GSB can help! This one-week workshop is for rising high school seniors who are in pursuit of the college process and are seeking that personal attention that the Upper School College Guidance Office at GSB provides its students. Working closely with Kerri Small, our Director of College Guidance (and former college admission director), students will participate in the following activities: creating a resume; developing a college essay; completing a demo college application; learning about and how to prepare for the college interview; and participating in a mock college admissions committee. Writing is a way to externalize ideas and feelings. The ability to write well creates a well-rounded individual who can organize and express to others his or her thoughts and ideas. This class goal is to educate you on how to write creatively, to learn to enjoy the process of writing and to find your own voice and writing style. This six-week course covers a full year of Latin 2 concepts for credit. Students will learn the completion of Latin noun declensions in all cases and the declension of all Latin verbs in all tenses. Students will learn the usage of several deponent clauses. Vocabulary, translation and grammar are expanded as students approach more complex narratives based on Roman history and mythology. Students also continue to practice classical Latin pronunciation through daily readings.
This one-week course will review and strengthen your student’s weaknesses in math. The Math Clinic is geared towards students entering middle school through students entering Algebra II. Middle School Study Strengthening Cendahl Cornellio-Alter, GSB Learning Specialist This week-long course is designed for middle school students by GSB Learning Specialist Cendahl Cornellio-Alter to discover how to be a STRONG student. It will include: identifying strengths and learning styles of each student, being a strong student during the day (attention/focus, note-taking, asking strong questions), physical, emotional and academic needs for studying (location, style, mood) and how we can use these techniques during the school year. Mini Problem Solvers Julie Jurkin, GSB Lower School Teacher Mini Problem Solvers will help your budding mathematician build a strong number sense through hands-on activities, games, and problem solving. We will use Singapour Math to establish concrete, pictorial, and abstract understanding of addition, subtraction, and even multiplication. Research Skills and Writing an Essay Tom Gilbert, GSB Upper School History Teacher This course offers students the opportunity to gather information, build a strong thesis statement, and produce an essay that reflects their interests. Over the course of this one-week program, students will research and write a five-paragraph essay on current events or a popular cultural topic of their choosing. Students will learn necessary research techniques and basic project writing skills including constructing an outline, essay structure, proper citation, editing and revising. Students will conduct research at the Gill St. Bernard’s library and online to produce a well-structured essay. Through this full sequence of process research and writing, students will strengthen those skills they need to write interesting and informative essays in high school and college. Get a quick overview of how to win a chess match – not just checkmating your opponent, but how to get that point. Having Fun with Dance & Cheerleading
Director of LaChaney’s Dance Academy and former NBA Nets dancer, LaShonda Chaney will be bringing an exciting program to young campers, both boys and girls, to learn the fundamentals of dance. We will emphasize progressing technically; building strength and flexibility; increasing coordination; choreography, Jazz and Hip-Hop; and most importantly having FUN together. Additional class time in dance history, anatomy, terminology, performance skills, and dance composition will make a varied day for young dancers. Two or three sessions of arts and crafts time during the week will help the young dancers create minor costume pieces.

Great Outdoors Stacy Schnurr, GSB Middle School Teacher, Bob Ort, GSB Upper School Teacher Spend the summer outside! Students will spend half of the session on the beautiful Gill St. Bernard’s School campus exploring stream ecology, taking short hikes and learning the basics of photography. Woodworking will also be a part of the adventure; a project will involve carving your own personal walking stick! Outdoor ethics, travel, safety and survival skills will be addressed. This five-day course includes a trip to Ort pond for fishing, boating and a BBQ, and culminates in a three-day, two-night (tent only) camping trip in the New Jersey Pinelands, complete with a kayak day trip! By working together to design and construct their own interactive robots, campers will be experimenting with science while they learn to build playful motorized creations with Lego®. Do you have the desire to have fun and be creative? Learn how to create an everlasting scrapbook for all your memories. Students will learn layout design, traditional scrapbooking methods, and how to use tools and embellishments. They will also learn creative techniques for adding personal touches. Each student will go home with their creation. Students must bring personal photographs to class(approximately 20-30) Minimum enrollment 4 and maximum enrollment 14.
Well, it can be! This one-week course will take you through a year’s worth of holidays in just one week. Learn about common and uncommon holiday traditions and customs. While Pocket Minecraft has the same gameplay, in Minecraft for PC it will require good computer skills to be a successful Minecraft player. Lifeguard Training, First Aid, CPR Certification/Recertification George Eversmann, RVCC Assistant Athletic Director – Aquatics and Facilities Teaches participants the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course content and activities prepare participants to recognize and respond quickly and effectively to emergencies and prevent drowning and injuries. Prerequisites: Minimum age of 15. Swim 300 yards continuously using front crawl and breaststroke only demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards using front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive 7-10 feet, retrieve a 10-pound object, return to the surface, swim 20 yards back to the starting point with the object and exit the water without using a ladder or steps, within 1 minute, 40 seconds. Tread water for 2 minutes using only the legs. Candidate will place arms under the armpits. Certification Requirement: Attend all class sessions. Demonstrate competency in all required skills and activities. Demonstrate competency in all final rescue scenarios. Pass both Section 1 – CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid and Section 2 – Lifeguarding Skills final written exams with a minimum of 80 percent. Maestro Soccer “Striker – Keeper” Camp Jim Buchanan, Director of Coaching, Maestro Soccer Maestro Soccer will run five days of fun, intensive training for all players wanting to improve their goal scoring or goalkeeping ability! All aspects of attacking play, such as crossing and finishing, long range shooting, one time finishing and heading will all be covered in this five-day all-inclusive camp. Goalkeepers will be instructed in all areas of their position; handling, diving, dealing with crosses, angles and much more! The unique camp will train strikers and goalies separately for the first part of the day, then training groups are combined to create goalies versus strikers in motivating, realistic training scenarios! First, you will learn how to use your mountain bike safely and efficiently while touring several park locations in NJ. Second, you will learn about proper nutrition and hydration before, during and after our biking experiences, ensuring that you have good energy levels and a healthy state of mind to enjoy mountain biking. Finally, you will gain an appreciation for the environment by learning how to maintain trails. The program includes a trip to Manasquan, NJ, for a day trip with lunch to Allaire Park. Photography will be an important component, also, to document the wonderful learning experiences and memories you will have. Of course, the most important aspect of the program is “safety first,” and we will always have experienced adult mountain bike riders with first aid training on the trails with the students at all times. Directions Hi Hills (25 St. Bernard’s Road, Gladstone, NJ 07934) is conveniently located in the beautiful rolling hills on the border of Morris and Somerset Counties in Gladstone, NJ. The camp is minutes off US-206, approximately 5 miles from the center of Chester, NJ, 15 minutes from the junction of highways 287 and 78, and less than 30 minutes from Morristown center (to the northeast), the International Trade Zone in southern Morris County (to the northwest), Somerville (to the southeast) and Hackettstown (to the west). *GPS Directions: Different GPS models find our camp in different ways. If a street number is necessary, use 21 St. Bernard’s Road - this will place you opposite one of the camp’s entrances. Additionally, some GPS models require the town to be entered as Far Hills rather than Gladstone.
Ways to Save GSB Discount All current GSB families will receive 20% off total tuition and new families to GSB in 2017 will receive 25% off tuition when registering for Hi Hills.
