Favorite Girl Scout Memory
My favorite memory as a Girl Scout was serving as a Page in the SC Senate during Girl Scout Week. The Senator I was assigned to gave me the keys to his Jaguar and asked me to go pick up his dry cleaning. I was only 14 and couldn't drive so I got someone else to do it. He also gave me a $50 bill and asked me to get him a Coke. The canteen was run by a visually-impaired man and there was a sign on the door that said "No bills larger than $5." I told him I had a $50 bill from the senator and promised him it was true. I also told him I was a Girl Scout. He took the money.

Favorite Girl Scout Memory
I have many fond memories of Girl Scouts as a child and adult. But the one that always sticks out for me is the time my daughter Ronnie and I facilitated an archery class at Iron Scout for a group of girls we did not know. We had finished one class just before lunch, sending the girls on their way. We noticed one girl still at the range, and she asked us if we would mind working with her during our lunch. She did not participate with the other girls- we believe due to her heavy size. So we agreed we would help her get started, coaching her on techniques, etc. By the time the hour was done, she was hitting bullseyes. She thanked us for taking the time, and then she said, "I can tell my mother that I have a sport now Thank you so much." We all started crying.

I was a Girl Scout for just a short time during my childhood, but I had the pleasure of co-leading my daughter's Daisy and Brownie troop in Knoxville, TN several years ago. We had a small group of girls who all went to elementary school together. We held the meetings at our house, and we asked permission from the bus driver and parents if the entire troop could ride the bus to our neighborhood every other week. The girls enjoyed riding together, and we would walk them back to my house from the bus stop to begin our meeting. We earned many badges and participated in many service projects and it was just a special time for me and my daughter to experience Girl Scouting together along with her best friends!

Favorite Girl Scout Memory
When I first joined the Peace Corps, part of our training was in a very rural site with no electricity or running water. This freaked out most of the people in my group because that meant latrines by candlelight. What was it in my life that gave me my sense of adventure, made me want to try new things and gave me the confidence that I could not only try, but be successful? It was Girl Scouts. Yes, I had used a latrine at Girl Scout camp growing up and as a counselor, but it was more than that. My whole life I had been challenged through Girl Scouts with new people, new thoughts and new ideas. Those challenges were fun and I loved it! I vividly remember looking at that latrine the first time and thinking "this is what a lifetime of Girl Scouts has prepared you for." Ask me sometime and I'll show you the picture of the latrine.

On Thursday, she was looking pretty happy, found some buddies and had come up to the barn all smiles. She had a great ride and day at the barn. On her way down the driveway back to camp, she slid on the gravel and wiped out. I held my breath waiting for the tears, but she got up, brushed herself off and skipped back to the group. Though I was never a Girl Scout and my prior knowledge was limited to cookies, learning of the powerful and influential impact the Movement has is truly a delight. Seeing an organization dedicated to the empowerment and development of strong girls is inspiring.

Favorite Girl Scout Memory
In my teaching career, I have had many students who are Girl Scouts. Their overall academic performance, as well as their kindness, knowledge and eagerness to learn, always impressed me. By being a Girl Scout, young ladies learn a variety of skills that will help them succeed in the classroom, outside the classroom and in their future endeavors. Having witnessed this first hand has been a privilege.

Favorite Girl Scout Memory
Girl Scouting taught me to be prepared for anything and work with what you've got. As a mega planner, that's been an important lesson that I have to often remind myself of! One troop camping trip we forgot a skillet for breakfast (maybe not so prepared there), so in true Girl Scout fashion, we made it work and wrapped a shovel in aluminum foil. I swear- it tasted better because of it and made a fun memory. Shovel bacon is truly superior!
