Favorite Girl Scout Memory

My favorite memory as a Girl Scout was serving as a Page in the SC Senate during Girl Scout Week. The Senator I was assigned to gave me the keys to his Jaguar and asked me to go pick up his dry cleaning. I was only 14 and couldn't drive so I got someone else to do it. He also gave me a $50 bill and asked me to get him a Coke. The canteen was run by a visually-impaired man and there was a sign on the door that said "No bills larger than $5." I told him I had a $50 bill from the senator and promised him it was true. I also told him I was a Girl Scout. He took the money.

Favorite Girl Scout Memory

I have many fond memories of Girl Scouts as a child and adult. But the one that always sticks out for me is the time my daughter Ronnie and I facilitated an archery class at Iron Scout for a group of girls we did not know. We had finished one class just before lunch, sending the girls on their way. We noticed one girl still at the range, and she asked us if we would mind working with her during our lunch. She did not participate with the other girls- we believe due to her heavy size. So we agreed we would help her get started, coaching her on techniques, etc. By the time the hour was done, she was hitting bullseyes. She thanked us for taking the time, and then she said, "I can tell my mother that I have a sport now Thank you so much." We all started crying.

Favorite Girl Scout Memory

When I first joined the Peace Corps, part of our training was in a very rural site with no electricity or running water. This freaked out most of the people in my group because that meant latrines by candlelight. What was it in my life that gave me my sense of adventure, made me want to try new things and gave me the confidence that I could not only try, but be successful? It was Girl Scouts. Yes, I had used a latrine at Girl Scout camp growing up and as a counselor, but it was more than that. My whole life I had been challenged through Girl Scouts with new people, new thoughts and new ideas. Those challenges were fun and I loved it! I vividly remember looking at that latrine the first time and thinking "this is what a lifetime of Girl Scouts has prepared you for." Ask me sometime and I'll show you the picture of the latrine.

Favorite Girl Scout Memory

Girl Scouting taught me to be prepared for anything and work with what you've got. As a mega planner, that's been an important lesson that I have to often remind myself of! One troop camping trip we forgot a skillet for breakfast (maybe not so prepared there), so in true Girl Scout fashion, we made it work and wrapped a shovel in aluminum foil. I swear- it tasted better because of it and made a fun memory. Shovel bacon is truly superior!
