With over 700 acres across nine eastern Massachusetts and New Hampshire properties, getting outdoors for a day, night, or weekend with a Girl Scout troop or service unit has never been easier.

Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts (GSEMA) has a long and successful history of getting girls outdoors. In fact, many Girl Scouts say that “camping trips” and other outdoor activities are one of the best things about their Girl Scout experience. Connecting with nature in a girl-led setting is an important benefit of belonging to Girl Scouts, because when Girl Scouts get outside, they:

• Discover that they can better solve problems and overcome challenges

• Develop leadership skills, build social bonds, and are happier overall

• Become team players and care more about protecting our environment

General Information and Reservations

Planning a Troop Overnight? Get Trained.

GSEMA offers many outdoor training opportunities—for a variety of levels and experiences— throughout the year. Our number one priority is to ensure safety of our members, so everyone has fun. Troop camping requires one volunteer who has completed Outdoor Basics or Troop Camping Training, and another adult certified in First Aid and CPR (FA/CPR). The outdoor trainings are a sequence and must be completed in order by the aspiring camping trained volunteer, beginning with Going Places with Girl Scouts. Note: FA/CPR sessions are offered separately.

How to Reserve a Site

Service Unit Coordinators and Encampment Directors:

Please submit an online request form to reserve a camp property for an encampment per the following dates:

April 15: Due date for encampment reservations between September-January

November 15: Due date for encampment reservations between February-August

Girl Scout Troops:

Site reservations will be available to all Girl Scout troops 10 business days after opening day for encampment reservations. To reserve a property, visit our Property Reservations page and click "Reserve Online."

Cancellation and Refund Policy

Written notice of cancellation must be received six weeks prior to your date to receive a refund. Troops that want to postpone a reservation due to low enrollment and reschedule must give four weeks notice in writing in order to transfer payment to a new date in the current Girl Scout year (October 1–September 30).

When to Check In and Check Out

Friday or Saturday check in for an overnight is typically between 4-7 PM with check out the following morning at 10 AM. Saturday or Sunday day use check in begins around 11 AM. Please refer to your camp confirmation packet for specific check in/out procedures.

Facility Rental for Non-GSEMA Troops

All campsites are available for rental by non-GSEMA troops, and are expected to be well-supervised and must abide by all Girl Scouts of Eastern Massachusetts policies and procedures for camping and site use. Groups must also present a Certificate of Liability Insurance for a minimum of $1,000,000 with its reservation prior to securing a camp site. Sleeping Accommodations

A twin-sized mattress pad is available for each guest. Please refer to each property’s facility chart for an overview of a unit’s sleeping accommodations. Some units offer mattress pads on the floor, while others offer mattress pads on a simple metal bed frame

Important Reminders about Your Stay

(cot) or on a bunk bed. Facilities that offer a separate room for leaders will have mattress pads on a cot or a bunk bed.

Medical Emergencies

Medical emergencies are the responsibility of the troop/group leader. A certified First Aider with a first aid kit is required for each troop using the site. Please refer to your camping confirmation packet for GSEMA Emergency Procedures instructions to report an accident or illness, and for local emergency numbers with directions to the nearest hospital.

GSEMA Volunteer Policies and Procedures

• Smoking, Alcohol, Drugs, and Weapons

Smoking, alcohol, drugs, and weapons are not permitted anywhere on GSEMA property, including transportation to and from GSEMA properties, alone or in the presence of girls; when carrying out a Girl Scout program, including meetings in private homes; or otherwise volunteering on behalf of GSEMA.

• Pets

Pets are not permitted for any reason. Please do not try to keep any found wildlife (e.g., frogs, birds, etc.) as pets.

• Valuables

GSEMA is not responsible for personal equipment (i.e., sports equipment, pocket knives, electronics, vehicles, musical instruments, etc.) brought to camp.

• Community Living/Consideration

Camp quiet time in camp is 10 PM. Groups are expected to reduce noise levels and if taking night walks to respect the rights of other campers by avoiding areas directly adjacent to tent or cabin sites. Consideration of other campers at all times during your stay is appropriate Girl Scout behavior.

If you have an idea for a service project at a GSEMA property, please email customercare@gsema.org with a rough outline of your plan. All projects must be approved before implementation.

If your troop has 10 or more Girl Scouts who want to participate in archery, boating, or a challenge course program, GSEMA can help! Visit our Outdoor Adventure webpage for a description of activities and a link to hire an outdoor program facilitator.

Groups > 10 girls but < 45 girls:

Boating, Archery, Low Ropes, High Ropes, Climbing Wall, and Indoor High Ropes: $25 per girl

Encampments > 45 girls: Boating, Archery, Low Ropes, High Ropes, Climbing Wall, and Indoor High Ropes: $20 per girl

Encampment Directors may request multiple activities for their group by completing this request form

Booking Activities

Outdoor Program activities are booked through GSEMA’s property reservation platform. Choose your camp, then choose your activity and search for an available date. Our Outdoor Program staff will be in touch to confirm your facilitator. If none are available, refunds will be processed. Troops with a trained adult for swimming, boating, archery and low ropes can book their rental on GSEMA's property reservation platform. Note: Certificates for trained adults must be on file with GSEMA. If that date and/or time is not available we will be in touch to reschedule.

Reminder: The Challenge Course equipment is NOT for troop usage. This includes low ropes, high ropes, climbing walls, Flying Squirrel, etc. Trained facilitators must be with your group to use the equipment.

Camp Cedar Hill’s 75-acre property features an archery range, a pond, ropes challenge courses, and an alpine climbing tower. It is also home to the Girl Scout Museum at Dennett House, a service center housing GSEMA staff, and a retail shop. GSEMA has been stewards of the Cedar Hill property since 1923.

The Waltham Fire Department does not permit outdoor fires except for fire circles, and for cooking purposes only. Troops may use indoor fireplaces; please refer to the reservation confirmation packet for usage instructions.

All fire circles have rakes, a bucket, and a grate. Please build fires in existing fire circles, and do not make new ones. Gather only fallen dead wood for any fire. Please leave ashes in the fire circle; it is not necessary to rake, sweep, or shovel ashes before or after use.

Plumbing

Cedar Hill has indoor toilet facilities and no showers.

Refrigeration and Food Storage

Most sites have refrigeration units. Please reference the chart on page 15. It is your responsibility to monitor the thermometer for acceptable temperature readings of 40 degrees or below. If not, please notify Site Manager on Duty for correction. It is suggested to bring a cooler or bin to store non-perishable food items.

Shared Spaces

The playfield, pond, flag hill (near Beehive), and gaga ball pit are normally shared by all site users. Troops are responsible for bringing outdoor games and equipment if planning to use the shared outdoor spaces, including balls for the gaga ball pit.

Trash Disposal

A dumpster is located at the rear of the Beaver Street parking lot or the Forest Street lot. Troops are responsible for bringing trash to the dumpster at the end of their stay.

GSEMA Shop

The GSEMA Shop will be open Friday, 9:30 AM-4 PM and Saturday, 9:30 AM-4 PM. One troop at a time may visit the store when accompanied by an adult. The store carries Girl Scout uniforms, equipment and camping supplies, badges, t-shirts, jewelry, and gifts.

The Girl Scout Museum

The Girl Scout Museum at the Dennett House is available for tours and activities by appointment. Arrangements for a visit must be made in advance. Contact the Museum at least one month before your troop overnight/encampment at 781-373-4360 or cedarhillmuseum@live.com.

Reminders

• The pools are not available for troop or group usage. Please don't climb the pool fence.

• The high ropes, low ropes and archery are to only be used with an authorized facilitator.

• Winter can be a wonderful time of year at Cedar Hill. Sledders can use the hill near the Rookery at your own risk. No ice skating is allowed on the pond.

• The farmhouse is a private home. Please do not sit on the lawn or cut through the yard.

• Do not move mattresses around from site to site.

Parking

When arriving at Cedar Hill, have the girls wait for others between the office and Great Hall. The parking lot often becomes very busy and can be very dangerous for both children and drivers. Once you’ve picked up the keys, one car with food and troop equipment will be permitted to drive to your site, road conditions permitting. This car remains there for your entire stay and may not leave the site except for an emergency.

All other cars in your group must park in the main parking lot. Groups must walk themselves and their personal gear to their campsite. Troops using Four Winds and Beehive may unload at the back gate after first checking in at the front office. Limited parking is allowed at the back gate. If girls will be joining your group late or departing early please be sure parents have the name and location of your cabin. You must inform them that they cannot drive into camp.

Camp Favorite is located on 65 acres of sandy pines and oak bluffs on Long Pond, and features a small beach, a playing field, and a lily pond for nature exploration. The Cape Cod Rail Trail (bike trail) runs near the camp, and the Cape Cod National Seashore is nearby. Bike and canoe rental, and waterfront use are available by prior arrangement.

Bikes

Bike Rental is available through Idle Times Bike Shop, Route 6, Eastham, 508-255-8281. Idle Times will deliver (at lower driveway) and pick up bikes for troops staying at Camp Favorite. If you bring your own bikes to camp, please walk bikes down to the road/bike path. Do not ride bikes on camp property. For all biking activities please note that Massachusetts State Law requires all children under 12 to wear bike helmets.

Reminders

• The land surrounding Camp Favorite is very fragile so please stay on existing paths and roads. Avoid climbing up or down the bluffs. Always use stairway when going to or from the beach area.

• There is considerable poison ivy in camp so you should learn to identify it and show it your girls.

• Do not move mattresses around from site to site.

Parking

Cars are not permitted in the units. Help us maintain this fragile bluff area by parking in the lower parking lot only. One car may drive into the upper lot to unload food and equipment but must then park in the lower lot with the others. Troops using the Woodlands and Newport units may pull off the road to unload heavy equipment or food, but then must move to the lower lot.

The Friendship House is a charming, heated one-room schoolhouse with a view of scenic Gloucester Harbor, the nation's oldest fishing port. It is within walking distance of Stage Fort Park and is an excellent base for exploring historic Cape Ann. This property is available for troop rentals, and does not host summer camp.

Camp Maude Eaton features an archery range, a waterfront on Pomps Pond, a low ropes challenge course, and a high ropes course with adventure elements including the Flying Squirrel. This property borders the Shawsheen River and the Lou Henry Hoover Memorial Sanctuary and Trail, a 55-acre parcel of conservation land with seasonal wildflowers, beaver dams, and 100+ year old trees.

It is suggested to bring a cooler or bin to store non-perishable food items.

Camp Rice Moody sits on eight forested acres in a residential area, and is an easy one-mile hike from the Reading Town Forest. It features include an open play area that is well-suited for cookouts and troop activities, and a modern, all-purpose lodge for overnights and troop meetings.

This Martha's Vineyard property features a lodge complemented by three cleared acres and a wooded area—it is the perfect base camp to explore the island. The heated lodge is available for overnight or day use and features indoor bathrooms (and an outdoor shower!), a kitchen with appliances (limited supplies), and a fireplace. The property also hosts platform tents, a bunkhouse, and a fire circle. The camp is 11 miles from the ferry docks, generally too far for bicycling, and island buses do not stop at the camp. However, there are several vehicle rental services on the island. This property is available for troop rentals, and does not host summer camp.

Dishwashing

Those troops using tent sites should wash dishes in the method outlined in Troop Camp training. Dishwater should be dumped in the washstand sink, NOT in the woods.

• Cooking equipment is NOT provided (i.e. pots, pans, utensils, and dishwashing buckets). Troops should plan to bring this equipment.

• Troops should also plan to bring all cleaning supplies including toilet paper, paper towels, and trash bags.

• Fire buckets, grates and rakes are available on the site.

Fires and Wood

All fire circles have rakes, a bucket, and a grate. Please build fires in existing fire circles, and do not make new ones. Gather only fallen dead wood for any fire. Troops should plan to bring wood, tinder, and kindling with them as the site is too small to gather wood. Please bag the fully cooled ashes in a heavy-duty trash bag and treat them like trash following directions under trash disposal.

Troops may use the lodge fireplace; please refer to the reservation confirmation packet for usage instructions.

Plumbing

Wampanoag has indoor toilet facilities and showers.

Refrigeration and Food Storage

The site has a refrigerator in unit. Please reference the chart pn page 43. It is your responsibility to monitor the thermometer for acceptable temperature readings of 40 degrees or below. If not, please notify site manager for correction.

Shared Spaces

The field outside the dining hall is normally shared by all site users. Troops are responsible for bringing outdoor games and equipment if planning to use this shared outdoor space.

Trash Disposal

Reminders

• There is no archery range, boating, or ropes courses at Camp Wampanaog.

• Pitching tents for any reason is not permitted on the site.

Camp Wind-in-the-Pines is situated on 144 wooded acres, and offers a wide variety of amenities and activities. The Environmental Discovery Center (EDC) features self-guided exhibits, a troop camping room, climbing wall, and high ropes course (each room is available separately for a fee). The property features a challenge course, an archery range, a sports field, an amphitheater, a high ropes course, a basketball court, hiking trails, a pond for canoeing and kayaking, and a full waterfront (lifeguard required). Canoe rental and waterfront use are available by prior arrangement.

Heat

The lodge is heated by two gas fired heaters on the wall. The thermostats are next to the bathroom door. Set the heaters at no higher than 68 degrees during your stay, and turn them back to 55 degrees when you leave. There is a carbon monoxide monitor mounted in the lodge, as recommended with gas fired burners.

It is suggested to bring a cooler or bin to store non-perishable food items.

The main fire circle, basketball court, ballfield, amphitheater (overnight side), and gaga ball pit are normally shared by all site users. Troops are responsible for bringing outdoor games and equipment if planning to use the shared outdoor spaces, including balls for the gaga ball pit.

Parking

When arriving at Camp Wind-in-the-Pines, stay together as close to the cars as possible. The parking lot often becomes very busy and can be very dangerous for both children and drivers. Troops may drive one car to the site to drop off equipment, then the car should return to the parking lot.
