The 23rd International GILBERT&SULLIVAN FESTIVAL
WELCOME TO THE 23rd FESTIVAL
Welcome to "The Greatest Gilbert and Sullivan Show on Earth!" For almost three weeks this August, Harrogate will be alive to the sounds of The Pirates of Penzance, HMS Pinafore, The Mikado … and the other jewels from this quintessentially English theatrical partnership that laid the very foundation for today's musical theatre.
You will be rubbing shoulders with fans who have travelled to Harrogate from as far afield as Honolulu, Los Angeles, British Columbia, Portland Oregon, Philadelphia, New York, Boston, Cape Town, Dunedin New Zealand, Melbourne Australia – and Sydney. Hong Kong – and for the first time ever mainland China. Thousands more are journeying from every part of the United Kingdom to enjoy this truly English phenomena. There is no doubt the glorious music of Sullivan and Gilbert’s wonderful dialogue and outstanding political satire is as topical as ever. Just imagine what they would have made of the EU referendum!
We are very proud of what we have achieved over the last 23 years. This season fans will enjoy four brand-new productions from our own National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company; from the British Universities presenting their own innovative interpretation of the works; and from Bus Pass Opera (for the over 60s) recapturing their magical theatrical moments.
The festival has been built on a simple premise. We offer you Gilbert and Sullivan "from morn to afternoon - from afternoon to night - from seven o'clock to two - from two to eventide - from dim twilight to ‘leven at night” – it need not quit your sight!
Here is your complete guide. Enjoy your visit. Box Office 01422 323 252

FESTIVAL INFORMATION
Tickets for every single event at this year's festival are available from the Festival Box Office – 01422 323252 or online at www.gsfestivals.org. Whilst we anticipate that tickets will be available "on the door" for matinee and evening performances, the morning fringe programme in the Royal Hall Heritage Lounge has limited seating capacity and we strongly recommend that you prebook the programmes you are interested in as early as possible. WE’RE GOING SIGHTSEEING
The 23rd International GILBERT&SULLIVAN FESTIVAL
This year we offer two completely different but equally interesting half day sightseeing opportunities for visitors to the festival.
On each Friday, August 5, 12th and 19th we will be visiting the United Kingdom's National Museum of Arms and Armour – the Royal Armouries in Leeds.
On Monday August 8th and again on Monday, August 15th our half day visit is to Skipton - the Gateway to the magnificent Yorkshire Dales and a market town which has retained much of its old world charm including a superbly preserved mediaeval castle. Buses leave from the front of the Royal Hall at 9:30am prompt and you will be back in Harrogate by 1:30pm
Tickets are £12.50 each and are available now from the festival office in Halifax or alternatively from the information desk at the entry to the Utopia Pavilion from August 4. They are of course subject to availability of seats on the coach.
THE ROYAL ARMOURIES in Leeds is a fascinating multi-million pound purpose-built
museum, home to the national collection of arms and armour, and displays over 8,500 objects throughout its six themed galleries: War, Tournament, Oriental, Self-Defence, Hunting, and Peace. This is one of the most important museums of its type in the world. Its origins lie in the middle ages. In the reign of Elizabeth I selected items began to be arranged for display to visitors, making the Royal Armouries heir to one of the oldest deliberately created visitor attractions in the country. Outside is the Tiltyard where live shows take place. It is located at Leeds Dock, only a short distance from the centre of Leeds.
SKIPTON gateway to the Yorkshire Dales has retained its old world charm. Today the High Street
is bustling with activity as you thread your way amongst the market stalls. High Street is a wide avenue with cobbled streets and alleyways leading off to undiscovered corners. Walk through the archway next to Max Speilman on Sheep Street and you will discover the delightful backwater that is Victoria Square with individual shops and cafes. Continue down the alleyways of Victoria and Albert Street. You will then arrive in Coach Street and the canal basin. Warehouses which once stored goods have been converted to a mix of shops and restaurants. At the top of Skipton High Street is its superbly preserved medieval castle.

WILL YOU BE A FRIEND?
We rely on the generosity of our friends and supporters to sustain the Festival and our other work throughout the year. Eighty five per cent of our income comes from ticket sales. Whilst this is an amazing achievement it also poses a significant risk. Two years ago our move to Harrogate saw our ticket sales drop. This was not a surprise but it highlighted the fact that we were beginning afresh in a new location and it would take up to five years to get back to where we needed to be. This meant we had to make up the difference from other sources – primarily from increasing the membership of our Friends of the Gilbert and Sullivan Charity which, over the years, has contributed almost £250,000 to support our various youth initiatives.
You can join at one of four levels from as little as £35 to as much as you would care to donate. You can pay by standing order or annual direct debit. There are many benefits – but equally important you are helping to preserve the legacy and ensure a future for Gilbert and Sullivan.
Join now online at: www.gsfestivals.org or at our Friends of the Festival desk in the Utopia Pavilion at the Festival

JOIN US FOR GILBERT & SULLIVAN IN JAPAN
The 23rd International GILBERT&SULLIVAN FESTIVAL
Gilbert, The Mikado, Japan, Titipu. Is there a connection? What is it? When the Tokyo Theatre Company brought a performance of the show to Buxton 10 years ago their programme notes suggested that Gilbert had selected Titipu as part of the alternative title for one of two reasons. In 1884 the silk farmers of Chichibu – 50 miles northwest of Tokyo - faced absolute destitution because of the social changes in Japan and their rebellion prompted government authorities to send in the Imperial army. Was this the Titipu-Chichibu link? A more likely connection was the "Japanese village" exhibition in Knightsbridge, London in 1885. More than a hundred Japanese men and women, housed in thatched bamboo introduced every day Japanese ways to an inquisitive public. Gilbert invited some of the village women to Mikado rehearsals to coach the cast on how to bow and use folding fans.
In 2001 after many twists and turns "The Mikado” , translated into Japanese premiered in Japan. We brought it to Buxton five years later and it received a rapturous reception.
Next summer the Chichibu Opera Company led by the Pooh Bah we met in Buxton will re-stage the Mikado in Chichibu as part of the celebrations of the opening of Chichibu’s new town hall and to coincide with the celebrations we plan to take a party of Gilbert and Sullivan enthusiasts on a "holiday of a lifetime" to Chichibu which is described as “traditional Japan's hidden treasure” on Tokyo's doorstep.
The visit will include a two day seminar examining the connection between the Mikado and Chichibu; a semi-staged performance of one of the other Gilbert and Sullivan operas (in English of course) specially for our Japanese hosts and an opportunity to explore this mountain city and hikers paradise in an area that has preserved a wealth of traditional customs and festivals. The visit will also include the popular sites of Tokyo itself. Full details will be announced during this year's festival in Harrogate.

PATIENCE
NEWCASTLE UNIVERSITY GILBERT & SULLIVAN SOCIETY We are delighted to welcome a first visit from Newcastle University G&S Society. NUGSS is one of the oldest student Societies in the University, established in 1952. Meet Reggie Bunthorne, an egotistical 1950’s schoolboy who grabs the girls’ attention with his sleek good looks and his Rock and Roll rebel act. All the boys hate him. All the girls love him. That is except for Patience, a carefree bookish girl who Reggie is besotted with. This new take on the show, directed by Zoe Hull and Elizabeth Hamer perfectly captures the air of fun and freedom present in the 1950’s. It laughs at the ridiculous way people follow the crowd no matter what and goes to the extreme to mock the idea that love is pure.

Derby G&S Company remain one of the most highly acclaimed nonprofessional theatre companies. They have been performing the works of Gilbert & Sullivan since 1966 and have won the Festival’s International Trophy more than any other performing group. INTRODUCTION TO THE PIRATES OF PENzANCE
STEPHEN TURNBULL Stephen Turnbull is secretary of the Sir Arthur Sullivan Society and has probably forgotten more about G&S than most people would ever learn in a lifetime. He is the ideal introducer to the history and background to the operas. This morning he takes a look at The Pirates of Penzance. You will hear the story of the creation and reception of the opera with illustrated recordings thrown in. Be prepared to follow Stephen off on some interesting tangents. 2.30pm Savoy Theatre Tickets £15.00
THE YEOMEN OF THE GUARD CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY GILBERT & SULLIVAN SOCIETY The Cambridge University Gilbert and Sullivan Society exists to put on high quality productions of (mostly) the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan, and provide an opportunity for lovers of singing, dancing, acting to meet and socialise. Nowadays the Society puts on five productions a year: the freshers’ show in Michaelmas; the main show in Lent term; a May Week show; a performance at the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival; and a large-scale production at the prestigious Minack Theatre on the cliffs of Porthcurno in Cornwall. Each show involves a different level of commitment ranging from a week’s rehearsal for the May Week show to a two-week, intensive rehearsal process for the Minack show. The society also enjoys a vibrant social life.

ALAN BORTHWICK & FRIENDS Jane Annie, or The Good Conduct Prize is a comic opera written in 1893 by J. M. Barrie and Arthur Conan Doyle, with music by Ernest Ford. When the G&S partnership disbanded after the production of The Gondoliers in 1889, impresario Richard D'Oyly Carte was forced to find new works to present at the Savoy Theatre. Barrie was then a journalist and had not yet created his classic Peter Pan. D'Oyly Carte, suggested that Arthur Sullivan collaborate with him, but Sullivan suggested his former pupil Ford, instead. Barrie could not finish the libretto and persuaded his friend Conan Doyle – already popular for his Sherlock Holmes mysteries – to work on it. Jane Annie premiered at the Savoy Theatre, London, on 13 May 1893 and was an immediate failure, despite a strong cast that included Rutland Barrington, Walter Passmore, Rosina Brandram, Emmie Owen, and Decima Moore. Jane Annie went on tour to Bradford, Newcastle, Manchester, and Birmingham where it was far more successful.

INTRODUCTION TO THE YEOMEN OF THE GUARD STEPHEN TURNBULL This morning, Stephen Turnbull, secretary of the Sir Arthur Sullivan Society introduces us to quite a different Sullivan and his score for The Yeomen of the Guard. Was this the closest G&S score to Grand Opera? Stephen will set the scene for the opera with some fascinating insight into its background. You will hear music from his vast collection and be well and truly prepared for the performances later today. 2.30pm Savoy Theatre Tickets £15.00
HARROGATE OR BUST
MAD MARGARET’S MINSTRELS This is a story woven around 32 G&S songs and includes some of Gilbert's original libretto. Can Lord Simon get his village G&S society to the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival or will a health and safety officer; a property developer; a chorus of unruly ghosts; two interfering (dead) parrots; two suitors; stop him? The show promises to bring a smile and happy glow to anyone who enjoys music and the theatre – and in particular those knowledgeable devotees who will have fun recognising phrases from the librettos and references to the shows throughout.

THE YEOMEN OF THE GUARD
The National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company are very special. Most of the Company specialise in Gilbert and Sullivan – and that is why the standard of performance is so high. And it is not only the principals who shine. Last year’s national theatre critics raved about the quality of chorus singing and the wonderful choreography. That is one of the reasons we selected Yeomen for 2016. It needed superb principals and a fantastic chorus. That is what you will have today. Enjoy it!

MEET THE FESTIVAL ADJUDICATOR
ANDREW NICKLIN Our Festival Adjudicator, Andrew Nicklin writes: Having been involved in musical theatre for over fifty years and in some capacity with this Festival for over twenty years, I was delighted when asked if I would be interested in adjudicating the competitive element of the 23rd Festival. It took only a matter of moments for me to say “yes” and I now look forward to some excellent productions. For me and many of my colleagues, just taking part in the Festival at Buxton or Harrogate (and once or twice abroad) has been a reward in itself, but of course it is always good to receive constructive feedback, and nominations and awards are really the icing on the cake.

James Hendry is one of the most exciting young talents that we discovered at the Festival. He sings, he conducts – and just watch him play the piano! At the 2015 Festival James put together and conducted a very special Sullivan Concert in St. Peter’s Church, Harrogate. He also co-ordinated and conducted The Golden Legend in Ripon Cathedral and before we knew it he stepped in to conduct the National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company on its tour around the United Kingdom. In September he joins the Jette Parker Young Artists programme at The Royal Opera House as Conductor/Repetiteur. This afternoon we are sure of an entertaining programme when James plays, sings and talks Arthur Sullivan.

TRANSFORMATIONS (OR IDENTITY CRISIS)
LONDON G&S SOCIETY The Gilbert and Sullivan Society is pleased to present a Gilbert and Sullivan Entertainment Extravaganza which will explore some of the wildly contrasting journeys many G&S characters take in the course of the plots. For example, the Major-General goes from military bluster to abject coward, whilst Robin Oakapple and Despard undergo even more alarming transformations. Written and performed by Janet Cowley with Barry Clark, Alastair McCall and Ellie Moran, this fringe session is the ideal way to spend an amusing and stimulating afternoon after which you may never see the Savoy operas in the same light again .

INTERNATIONAL UNIVERSITY PRODUCTION
One of the major successes of the Festival in recent years has been the introduction of our UNIFest competition which has attracted full-scale productions from many British Universities. Last year we took the concept a stage further by introducing an International University Production enabling individual enthusiasts, usually from Universities not taking part in the competition, to come together for their own special production. In 2015 the traditional Iolanthe production came fourth in the international competition. Indeed it was voted so successful that there was little hesitation in agreeing to repeat the exercise this year with the performance of Patience.

The Pirates of Penzance are preparing to launch a raid on the International Festival – in coalition with the Festival audience! If you would rather just sing along, or simply sit back and watch the mayhem unfold, you will also be very welcome. In the first part of the afternoon, straightforward routines for the company scenes will be rehearsed, and participants will be provided with basic costumes and props. After a short interval, there will be a (slightly abridged) performance, accompanied in the original two piano arrangement of the score by Andrew Bedford (Harrogate G&S’s resident pianist) and John Longstaff (former répétiteur with the New D’Oyly Carte). So, if you would like to gaily tread the measure, steal upon your prey, or slap your chest and sing ta-ran-ta-ra – don’t just sit there; DO SOMETHING!

SAVOY SWELLS TO BROADWAY BABES - G&S CONTRIBUTION TO MUSICAL THEATRE THE VERY REV. IAN BRADLEY Ian argues that without Gilbert and Sullivan we would have had no Rodgers and Hammerstein or Rice and Lloyd Webber, no Oklahoma, Cats or Phantom. He traces the lineage of plot-led musical theatre from Gilbert and Sullivan and identifies it as a key influence on Broadway alongside the other major influence of Continental operetta. With plenty of illustrations and examples! 2.30pm Savoy Theatre Tickets £15.00
PRINCESS IDA HULL UNIVERSITY GILBERT & SULLIVAN SOCIETY
All students studying at the University of Hull are automatically members of Hull University Union (HUU), a charity, helping students during their time at university to create change, gain new skills, access help and support when needed and – most importantly – have a great time! The Gilbert and Sullivan Society is part of the HUU. They welcome, with open arms, anyone from any background to join the group in singing, acting and dancing or playing in the orchestra! All of the profits the Society generate go straight back into the student experience. The company presents a light take on this Gilbert and Sullivan opera which is a twist on a traditional medieval fairytale, following Ida as she rejects a marriage proposal to found a university for women.

TRIAL BY JURY, COX & BOX, THE zOO CHARLES COURT OPERA
Charles Court Opera is one of the leading lights in the recent explosion of small companies taking opera and musical theatre into previously inaccessible places, and leading the current reinvigoration of the works of Gilbert and Sullivan. The company was formed in 2005 by it's Artistic Director, John Savournin.
Hot on the tail of their 10 year anniversary Ruddigore, Charles Court Opera "the masters of G&S in small spaces" revive a special treat for CCO fans - a one act comedy from Bolton Rowe and Sullivan, set in a tumultuous London Zoo, with a suicidal chemist and a Peer in disguise; Gilbert and Sullivan's parody of the British judicial system; and in its 150th anniversary year they also bring a star studded “Cox and Box” from Sullivan and Burnand. Each is given a CCO treatment that will leave your sides splitting as you roll down the aisle.

IOLANTHE BUS PASS OPERA
Age is absolutely no barrier to participation in our annual Festival. We cater for the youth (9-19 years of age); students in our UNIFest programme - and now our Bus Pass Opera which is exclusively for the over 60s. And don't think the over 60s are past it! They bring a wealth of experience – and many of them accolades and awards from earlier Festivals.
In previous years participants have travelled from as far afield as Australia, the United States and Spain to work together with 40 or so like-minded people. This year's production of "Iolanthe" will be directed by Pat O'Connell who has had a long connection with the Festival both as a player and director; and we see a welcome return of David Lyle from Edinburgh who is in charge of the music.

BARRINGTON IN THE D’OYLY CARTE
STEPHEN GODWARD Stephen Godward has won many awards with Derby and Trent at previous festivals. Today he introduces us to George Rutland Fleet (a.k.a. Rutland Barrington) who was born in 1853 and from 1877 to 1896 he originated many of the lyric baritone roles in the Savoy operas. Barrington had a career spanning over 40 years which ranged from Shakespeare to Silent Film! This presentation relates to his time in the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company and the roles he created.

THE GRAND DUKE
DAUNTLESS THEATRE Dauntless Theatre's modern and minimalist production of The Grand Duke utilizes the mod-trad style which Dauntless have been perfecting over the last 5 years. Set in a dystopian gambling themed jungle, the piece focuses heavily on the characters and events of Gilbert's most complex plot, drawing out the intricacies of each character to heighten the madness. Join Ludwig, as he bumbles his way into politics, employing admin legalities to "kill off" the hierarchy, and pursued by a veritable harem of women from his nightmares! Managed and run entirely by young people, Dauntless are committed to bringing new takes to older shows. Dauntless Theatre have grown a lot since they began and now people from all over the world come to get involved with their fresh takes and award winning performances.

More Gilbert and Sullivan
Theatrical Adventures this Autumn
Our Theatrical Adventures are just that. They are theatrical – and they are an adventure. Over the next 12 months we plan four cruising adventures and an exciting visit to Chichibu in Japan. You can read about the trip to Japan on page 16. Cruising is such a mature way to travel. Your boat is your one-stop hotel, train, taxi, bus, restaurant and aeroplane. You unpack once. You meet old friends and make new ones. You enjoy fabulous entertainment and interesting lectures. Great food. You cruise at a leisurely pace. It is indeed a very civilised way to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life. And on these adventures we have our own celebrated professional singers and musicians presenting varied programmes of opera, operetta and of course Gilbert and Sullivan. Earlier this year we charted our own boat to sail from Budapest to Passau and on to Prague. Afterwards we carried out a satisfaction survey of our guests. We were very pleased with the results. Here are some of the headlines:-

We meet in Budapest at the start of our adventure. Our cruise vessel is ready for boarding from 14:30 hours and we set sail at 16:00 hours precisely. The banks of the Danube are rarely more attractive than as we pass the majestic architecture that makes Budapest such an exciting and inviting capital. Join us for a “Getting to Know You” reception before our first dinner together.
Sat, October 29
In the early hours we leave the European Union passing through passport control into Serbia and our first port of call – Novi Sad which is home to 27 different ethnic groups and six religious denominations and often referred to as "Little Europe." Novi Sad in the north of Serbia is at one of the continent's true crossroads and its history as a multinational commercial and transit centre has left it endowed with historical and cultural sights that even much larger cities have difficulty matching.
Sun, October 30
ITINERARY
Our cruising begins in earnest as we depart Novi Sad for the leisurely 35 hour journey to Giurgiu, the capital city of Giurgiu County, Romania, in Muntenia. We pass the Iron Gates an amazing 83 mile-long stretch of the Danube River separating Serbia and Romania. The scenic gorge contains two hydroelectric dams and this project raised the river's water level by 114 ft. The gorge bears a large plaque as a reminder of the "hanging road" built into the cliff side by the Romans around 103 AD.
Mon, October 31
Following an early breakfast another adventure unfolds as we leave by coach, with packed lunch, for the 45 mile journey to Bucharest, the capital of Romania. The city still retains the old charm that attracted tourists after the First World War when it was called "Little Paris." We see the extraordinary People's Palace, House of Parliament and the largest civilian building in the world.

We rejoin the boat at Vidin on the southern bank of the Danube in northwestern Bulgaria.

The city-center Markt features horse-drawn carriage rides and 17th-century houses converted into restaurants and cafes, as well as the 13th-century belfry with its 47-bell carillon and 83m tower with panoramic views.

Off again, our next port of call is Antwerp an international port city on Belgium’s River Scheldt, with history dating to the Middle Ages. In its center, the centuries-old Diamond District houses thousands of traders, cutters and polishers. We have an optional visit to Brussels – the Belgium capital and significant EU centre. It is a centre of European culture, officially nicknamed ‘the European Village’, with almost 90 museums, beautiful parks, fascinating walks, trendy restaurants and bars.

Our final port of call is Arnhem - best known today as the site of one of the most famous battles of World War II. Given city rights in 1233, it has long been at the center of conflicts because of its strategic location on the banks of the Rhine River. The Battle of Arnhem, part of Operation Market Garden, was fought in September 1944. Advancing Allied forces, in large part due to a series of mistakes, failed to secure a key bridge and suffered defeat, delaying the Allied advance into Germany until the following spring. The 1977 movie "A Bridge Too Far" was based on the events here.
THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 10
We are back where we started! After breakfast we leave The Elegant Lady for home. Some will fly – but those who came by train can experience the same journey in return to London’s St Pancras station. Another adventure over! Happy memories. Great pictures. Fantastic entertainment.
