ABOUT THEATRICAL ADVENTURES Theatrical adventures is run by the same people who organise the highly successful International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival which next year will celebrate its 25th anniversary
The concept of Theatrical Adventures is to charter exclusive cruising vessels to sail up major rivers such as the Danube and the Rhine. We have just returned from two highly successful adventures. One was an opera, operetta and Gilbert and Sullivan cruise from Budapest to Passau and onto Prague, and the other from Budapest through Croatia, Serbia,Bulgaria and Romania. The comments on the opposite page came from passengers.
The boats were filled with people from across the United Kingdom, USA, Spain, Belgium and Canada who all shared a common interest – music. They were entertained and they were also given an opportunity to join in the entertainment themselves. Our stars included Richard Suart and Donald Maxwell (ENO and all the major British opera companies); Ross Leadbeater and Leigh Coggins (the Great British Songbook) and many more. Passengers on one boat could (if they wished) attend four one hour rehearsals of opera choruses in preparation for a semi-staged "Trial by Jury", whilst on the other boat they rehearsed and presented a semi-staged production of The Mikado. It was great fun.
A Theatrical Adventure is just that. It is Theatrical and it is an Adventure. Our company is small enough to allow the owners to offer a personalised service. This means you are looked after from the minute you step on board our four and five-star cruising ships to the minute you leave.
Cruising is such a mature way to travel. Your boat is your one-stop hotel, train, taxi, bus, restaurant, aeroplane. You unpack once. You meet old friends and make new ones. You enjoy fabulous
Neil, Janet and Ian Smith entertainment and interesting lectures and great food. You cruise at a leisurely pace from point to point with stops and time to explore the most interesting ones. It's a very civilised way to escape the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
And of course what is particularly special about a Theatrical Adventure is that we offer a number of cabins with no single supplement.
They are very popular and you should book early before they have all been sold. This year we are going to extend the number of single cabins, many still with no supplement and a few more with a nominal supplement.
Any surplus from a Theatrical Adventure goes immediately into the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival accounts to help reduce our bank overdraft. Everybody wins!

OUR GUEST DIRECTOR
Gary Slavin has been fascinated by the theatre ever since he played an exclamation point in Monsignor Kelly's birthday celebration in Toledo OH. Really. Since then he has gone on to sing and dance his way through countless productions of musicals, then learning that he preferred production to performance, which lead to directing and choreographing musicals in venues throughout the US and then ultimately discovering a deep affinity for light opera in general and the works of Gilbert and Sullivan in
particular. He has staged all of the G and S operas (except Trial....boo) at least once. His production of Patience, for the Blue Hill Troupe of New York City, was awarded the International Championship at the 2015 International Festival and other Festival productions include Savoynet's Sorcerer, Thespis, and The Grand Duke; and he directed and choreographed the G&S Opera Company production of The Pirates in 2012.
A firm believer that Love of the work and Love of the art form = Successful endeavours, he brings deep theatrical knowledge, consistent musical integrity, and abiding creative enthusiasm and joy to each production he directs.
Wednesday May 16th
The morning is free. – perhaps time to return and visit yesterday’s museum. Explore Warsaw. Tonight we have another treat in store. Our final dinner together is at the Stary Dom restaurant. CAMBODIA AND VIETNAM From the Temple of Angkor to Halong Bay
There can be no tapestry of river life as fascinating and varied as the River Mekong. Indeed there can be no more striking a cultural contrast as that between the bustling Vietnam delta and the tranquility of Cambodia. We pass from the vibrant French colonial port of Saigon, through the vast delta so rich in human life and endeavour, to travel along the main channel into the rich countryside of Cambodia, and the great momuments of Angkor. In addition to this, we will visit the village of Kratie up the Mekong where we still can ďŹ nd the endangered river dolphins.
YOUR HOLIDAY OF A LIFETIME November 26 - December 11 2017
We were delighted at the immediate interest which followed our announcement to passengers on our two March “adventures” of a possible G&S adventure up the Mekong in 2018. There was so much interest that we could have almost filled one boat from this provisional excitement. So we have spent a considerable amount of time reviewing the possibilities. What is clear is that the exclusive charter vessels have fewer cabins than the ones we have used in Europe. They are of a very high standard – but they will not be able to confirm their 2018 rates until nearer the Festival.
BUT…. we found one fully costed proposal too attractive to resist and we are very excited to launch it today. Our journey starts and ends in Bangkok including an overnight and some sightseeing in this most fascinating of all capitals. It is a fourteen day trip leaving on November 26th and returning home on December 11th. What a fantastic early Christmas present for a maximum of fifty guests filling the 25 twin/double cabins. Angkor Wat
The cost is actually lower than we anticipated. It does not include flights to and from Bangkok or the two internal flights. We can organise these for you and let you have quotes through our Travelgate Partner in Harrogate. We anticipate from Europe the entire flying programme will be less than £750 – and that includes the internal flights.
We stay in excellent four star hotels in Angkor, Saigon, Hanoi and Bangkok and our trip includes our own exclusive seven night luxury cruise down the Mekong and a fantastic three day two night private charter Auco Cruise on Halong Bay.
The two cruise vessels are reserved for us until the end of May and we can only retain them if we have a strong and immediate commitment including a 20% non refundable deposit. So if you are interested you need to move QUICKLY.
We hope such a special offer might also be available in 2018 and if so will publish details just as soon as we have them.
Itinerary
Here are details of this trip. As you can see for yourself, it really is a holiday of a lifetime!! We are proposing that passengers fly from their home country to Siem Reap in Cambodia which is the starting point for our adventure on Sunday November 26th. It is of course possible to arrive earlier in Siem Reap and enjoy more time in this fascinating environment. It is likely that you will fly via Bangkok which is also the finishing point of our trip. At present flights are quoted from London Heathrow to Siem Reap at the end of November for less than £500 return.
With the first temple founded in 802 A.D., the ancient city had a population of over one million people at the height of the Khmer Empire, in the 12th and 13th centuries.
One of the world’s most impressive temple complexes, Angkor Wat is also the spiritual and cultural heart of Cambodia. Siem Reap
Sunday Nov 26th - Siem Reap Your hotel
On arrival there will be a private airport transfer and sightseeing in Siam Reap. We are staying overnight at the Hotel Somadevi Angkor Resort and Spa. Overnight accommodation, tax and service charge and American breakfast is included. Tonight we have dinner in a local restaurant and then back to our four star superior hotel. The town of Siem Reap is the gateway to the stunning Angkor Wat temple complexes. In addition to touring temples, visitors can also go to Tonle Sap Lake, or tour sites in-town such as Chantiers Ecoles (Artisans d Angkor) or the Cambodia Cultural Village. In recent years Siem Reap has also boomed, with new hotels, restaurants, art galleries and spas, so visitors have many options for spending their free time.
From the early 9th century, Angkor was the center of the Khmer empire, which flourished until 1431, reaching its peak in the 12th century. The temple complex is composed of over 100 monuments. Its sophisticated irrigation system was one of the largest in the world at that time. Many of the temples remain in surprisingly good condition. Others are under restoration, and visitors can take a first hand look at the painstaking efforts underway to preserve the relics. Angkor Wat
Monday Nov 27th - ANGKOR WAT
The crown jewel of Khmer architecture, Angkor Wat is the national symbol and the highlight of any visit to Cambodia. The largest, best preserved, and most religiously significant of the Angkor temples, Angkor impresses visitors both by its sheer scale and beautifully proportioned layout, as well as the delicate artistry of its carvings. To approach the temple, first cross the vast moat, continuing along a broad causeway lined with naga balustrades. Upon entering the main structure, ascend through a series of galleries and courtyard before reaching the central sanctuary, which offers beautiful views back over the causeway and across the surrounding countryside. On the way, stop to enjoy the intricate stone carvings that adorn nearly every surface of the temple, with some 1,700 Apsaras, or celestial dancers, sculpted from the walls. Along the outer gallery walls run the longest continuous bas-relief in the world, which narrates stories from Hindu mythology, including the famous Churning of the Ocean of Milk.
ANGKOR THOM
The fortified city of Angkor Thom covers an area of 10 square km. Enclosed by a wall and wide moats; the city includes many of Angkor's most popular sights. Enter by the monumental South Gate over a causeway lined on either side by statues of demons and gods, each carrying a giant naga. Continue to the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper Kings, former spaces for public ceremonies, both adorned with dramatic bas reliefs. Visit the ruined Baphuon, Royal Enclosure and Phimeanakas before continuing to the mysterious Bayon Temple. In this temple, one of the most popular and compelling in Angkor, explore the galleries of beautifully preserved bas reliefs and ascend narrow stairs to reach the central sanctuary, where giant stone faces smile enigmatically down from every angle.
Angkor Wat
TA PROHM TEMPLE
Ta Prohm is one of the most popular attractions of Angkor as much of the jungle has not been cleared and it looks very much as most of the Angkor monuments would have appeared when European explorers first stumbled across them
Tonight we have dinner in a local restaurant and then back to the Somadevi Hotel. Angkor Thom
RIVER MEKONG PANDAW CRUISE Tuesday November 28th to Tuesday December 5th.
River Mekong
The Pandaw experience is all about exploring remote and often hard-to-navigate rivers and coasts in specially-designed luxury small ships. Each ship, hand-crafted in brass and teak, is an object of beauty in itself. A Pandaw adventure is very different from that offered on an ocean-going cruise. The ships are small scale, and the atmosphere is informal, and very friendly.
Sail through the morning to reach Kratie. Kratie is an attractive French colonial river port but the main excitement are the dolphin grounds on the Mekong just north of there. As this is a protected area we can not take the mother ship so we will travel there by local transport and sampan. These ‘Irrawaddy’ dolphins are unique to Asian rivers and can be found on the Ganges, Irrawaddy and Mekong. It really is a very moving sight and not to be missed.
Thursday Nov 30th – Prek Kdam
Sailing down river we stop at the very curious Monkey Temple, Wat Hanchey and Nokor Bachey Temple.
Friday Dec 1st - Phnom Penh
Tuseday Nov 28th - Siem Reap

Wednesday Nov 29th - Kratie and the Dolphin Grounds
Whilst in Phnom Penh you will be provided with your own private three wheel cylce taxi. The Cyclo Centre Phnom Penh which provides the cyclos is a charity that provides basic welfare and medical services to cyclo drivers. You will visit the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda and National Museum. In the afternoon, there is an optional excursion (by coach) to the Killing Fields and the Khmer Rouge's grim Tuol Sleng or S21 detention centre. This tour is included in the cost of your cruise but must be requested at the time of booking.
Saturday Dec 2nd - Tonle River
Explorations up the Tonle River to a silver making village, Kampong Trolach, and Chong Koh either by ship or by coach depending on water levels. This river is very pretty and there is a vibrant local life to be viewed along the river banks.

Monday Dec 4th - Chau Doc
This morning we either visit a Moslem Cham tribal village and a cat fish farm in Chau Doc with our guide or do your own thing and take off on a mountain bike. HIGHLIGHTS OF HANOI. Vietnam's capital races to make up for time lost to the ravages of war and a government that as recently as the 1990s kept the outside world at bay. Its streets surge with scooters vying for right of way amid the din of constantly blaring horns, and all around layers of history reveal periods of French and Chinese occupation – offering a glimpse into the resilience of ambitious, proud Hanoians.
Negotiate a passage past the ubiquitous knock-off merchants and you’ll find the original streets of the Old Quarter. Defiant real-deal farmers hawk their wares, while city folk breakfast on noodles, practise t’ai chi at dawn on the shores of Hoan Kiem Lake, or play chess with goateed grandfathers. Hanoi is undergoing a rapid transformation. You can dine on the wild and wonderful at every corner, sample market wares, uncover an evolving arts scene, then sleep soundly in a little luxury for very little cost. Meet the people, delve into the pas t and witness the awakening of a Hanoi on the move.

Our on-board activities include a master chef cooking classic; cocktail of the day (happy hour) and a fruit carving session. It also includes all entrance and sightseeing tickets and mooring fees; taxes and insurance on board.
HIGHLIGHTS OF HALONG BAY. Towering limestone pillars and tiny islets topped by forest rise from the emerald waters of the Gulf of Tonkin. Halong translates as 'where the dragon descends into the sea' and legend tells that this mystical seascape was created when a great mountain dragon charged towards the coast, its flailing tail gouging out valleys and crevasses. As the creature plunged into the sea, the area filled with water leaving only the pinnacles visible. The geological explanation of karst erosion may be more prosaic, but doesn't make this seascape any less poetic. Designated a World Heritage site in 1994, Halong Bay's spectacular scatter of islands, dotted with wind- and wave-eroded grottoes, is a vision of ethereal beauty and, unsurprisingly, northern Vietnam's number one tourism hub. Check in at Tuan Chau Marina Port. Embark on The Au Co for a welcome drink followed by a cruise briefing. Savor a delicious lunch while cruising towards South East Halong bay, passing by Chicken Rock, Finger Islet, and Frog Islet. Arrive to
Dark and Bright Lagoon and visit the area by rowboat or kayak (complimentary). Back to The Au Co for a cooking demonstration with traditional Vietnamese food on the sundeck. Dinner on board. Overnight on board.

In the afternoon, visit Ho Ba Ham area by kayaking (complementary) or visit to Ang Du area. Then back to the boat for relaxation. Dinner on board. Overnight on board.
The Au Co
Sunday Dec 10th - Titov Island

Brunch will be served in the restaurant while the boat heads back to harbor. Disembark to Tuan Chau Marina. Of course there is still more excitement to come! Continue with a transfer to Hanoi airport, where you take a flight to….
Bangkok
A fascinating urban jungle, Thailand’s capital is one of the biggest and best cities in Asia. Crossed by the mythic Chao Praya Roof top at the, Ramada
places. Despite offering all the comfort and modern facilities of a vibrant modern capital, the City of Angels still kept the charm of its long age tradition and customs. We overnight at the Ramada D'MA Bangkok which has a total of 286 guest rooms and suites. Tonight is our last night Bangkok
as a group and we mean to enjoy it! We will visit the Siam Niramit for Show and Buffet Dinner. This extravagant show about the history of Thailand involves stunning costumes, skillful dancers, entertaining music, state-of-the-art techniques and cutting-edge light and sound system. The 80-minute show aims to portray the Thai cultural heritage which is narrated in three acts: ‘Journey Back into History,’ ‘Journey Beyond Imagination,’ and ‘Journey Through Joyous Festivals.’
Monday Dec 11th - Wat Phra Kaew Wat Pho Temple
(also known as the River of Kings), Bangkok has been referred to as the Venice of the Orient. It is a world of contrast between high buildings and old romantic klongs and popular areas filled with trendy chic
Siam Niramit Show & Buffet Dinner
Our adventure finishes on another “high” with a half day visit to Wat Phra Kaew and the nearby attractions, before moving on to the Grand Palace. Wat Phra Kaew, or the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, is located right next to the Grand Palace, and they probably form together the greatest spectacle for visitors in Bangkok. The palace, which is the former royal residence of the Chakri Kings, is the perfect example of an ancient Siamese court. Built in 1782 by the King Rama I, it was the centre of power for more than 150 years.
Off by coach for a final lunch together in Thai style at Wan Fah Resturant. Then it is off to the airport for our return to our respective homes. Time for Christmas shopping and to prepare our own individual film show of an undoubted “Theatrical Adventure.” And what about our own musical entertainment. They don’t have pianos on the cruise ships in Vietnam – so we will hire one! We have a couple of “star” entertainers lined up. You will not be disappointed. Gilbert and Sullivan PLUS!!!
