THE DANUBE The Danube River is not only Europe's longest river – more than twice the length of the Rhine and nearly three and a half times the length of the Rhone – but it flows through or forms the boundary with eight different countries. Originating in Germany, the Danube flows southeast for 2,860 km (1,780 miles), passing through or touching the border of Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine before emptying into the Black Sea. Its drainage basin extends into nine more countries.
THE WEATHER March marks the start of spring along the Danube, and features rapidly rising temperatures. After the cold of December, January and February, the city wakes up from its winter sleep and the annual tourist season is underway!
