Welcome to our 28th Festival. We are delighted to announce our full programme for Buxton and Harrogate and it's fantastic. Certainly one Festival not to be missed! We had a ball at the Festival in 2021, even with all the restrictions in place. Thank you to everyone who made it such a joy and such a success. The performers, orchestra and creative teams pulled out all the stops and worked their socks off to deliver fabulous performances in very challenging conditions. And the icing on the cake was the five-star review the National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company received in the Daily Mail, along with some outstanding reviews in Opera Magazine and numerous other publications.

PHOTOS THROUGHOUT BY JANE STOKES

We have an outstanding programme to tempt and tantalise. For the first time since 2011, the National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company will perform Utopia Limited. UNIFest and the Youth Production return – we missed them so much this year, and the much-loved Bus Pass Opera will perform Princess Ida. And of course, we have a jam-packed fringe programme in Buxton and Harrogate. You certainly won’t be bored. But we can’t do it all by ourselves – particularly after the very difficult last two years. So, we will be launching a new fundraiser for the Festival Future Fund in the coming weeks and we hope you will be able to help. This year our usual bar suppliers in the Utopia Pavilion couldn’t come to Harrogate, so we did it ourselves and opened the Cock & Bull Bar. It was a lot of fun as we learnt how to pull the perfect pint. We had free entry into the

Festival Club too, and we enjoyed it so much that it will also be free in 2022. We think everyone deserves a treat at the moment! We look forward to seeing you somewhere along the way - at our New Year extravaganza in the Royal Hall, on one of our fabulous Theatrical Adventures Cruises, maybe our May weekend to Skipton and of course in Buxton or Harrogate. And don’t forget to sign up for gsopera.tv. There’s a £30 discount and an outstanding Advent Calendar of exclusive daily events to enjoy throughout the festive season. See the programme on page 18.

Best wishes for a happy and healthy Christmas, and we’ll see you soon.

STOP PRESS…. TWO EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENTS THAT JUST MADE IT INTO PRINT!

OPERA DELLA LUNA RETURN TO THE FESTIVAL How fantastic is that! We are thrilled and excited to announce that director Jeff Clarke will bring Opera della Luna’s acclaimed production of HMS Pinafore to Buxton and Harrogate for next year’s Festival. If you have never managed to see an Opera della Luna performance before, you have to see HMS Pinafore! These magical performances are sidesplittingly funny, clever and fantastic entertainment. In true Opera della Luna style, eight performers become crew, chorus and principals in this classic comic opera. Gilbert and Sullivan’s satire of the British class system is set aboard the ship HMS Pinafore, where the captain’s marriage plans for his daughter go hilariously awry when she falls for a lower-class sailor instead of the First Lord of the Admiralty. Packed to the brim with toetapping tunes, the wit and verve of this production is the perfect showcase for the talents of Opera della Luna, one of the UK’s leading exponents of operetta and comic music-theatre.

OUR NEW CONDUCTOR FOR THE NATIONAL GILBERT & SULLIVAN OPERA COMPANY Welcome John Andrews! We are delighted to confirm that John Andrews will conduct the National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company productions at the Festival. This will be John’s first appearance with the National Festival Orchestra and the NGSOC, and we are all tremendously excited to have him on board. With a special affinity for Italian bel canto and the English baroque, John has conducted over forty operas with companies including The Grange Festival, Opera Holland Park, English Touring Opera, Garsington Opera, Opera de Baugé, the Volkstheater Rostock, and most recently at the Buxton International Festival in 2021.

Our 2022 Youth Production is

Iolanthe

A highlight of every festival is our Youth Production, open to young people aged between nine and eighteen years old. This year we are delighted to announce that National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera company director Sarah Helsby Hughes will direct Iolanthe for the Youth Production.

This is a wonderful opportunity for cast members to learn how a production is directed and staged in just a week.

Matinee and evening performances of Iolanthe will be staged on Saturday 20 August.

There is no charge for participation, but we ask parents to join the Friends of the Festival Association if they are able to do so or make a nominal donation to the charity to help contribute to the staging of the event.

Rehearsals will begin on Saturday morning, 13 August. No previous experience on stage is necessary – just bags of enthusiasm and lots of energy! Gilbert & Sullivan is the ideal introduction to opera and musical theatre. Auditions for principal roles will take place on DVD/ Youtube. Chorus members do not need to audition.

For more information, please email sarah@gsfestivals.org or complete the form online at www.gsfestival.org/youthproduction 6

Our 2022 Bus Pass production is

Princess Ida

Bus Pass Opera continues to be a firm favourite at the Festival. The original concept, conceived by Ian Smith, was to allow “retired” thespians to come out of retirement and demonstrate their years of experience. We are delighted that Andy’s Gas – the company of the late Andy Criddle – will sponsor the Bus Pass Productions for a further three years. Andy’s wife, Lyn Hollister Criddle, is a fantastic supporter of the Festival, and we send our thanks to the family for their extraordinary generosity. This year, Bus Pass Opera will perform Princess Ida in the Royal Hall on Tuesday 16 August

Alan Borthwick will direct, and David Lyle will be musical director once again. If you would like to apply, please complete the online form at www.gsfestivals. org/bus-pass-opera or email sarah@gsfestivals.org. Please indicate your voice type, if you have been in a previous Bus Pass Opera production, a summary of previous Gilbert & Sullivan experience (if applying for the first time) and if you wish to be considered for a part/parts. Rehearsals will start in Harrogate on Monday 8 August (2pm) through to the performance, and there will be a nominal participating charge of £40 per person, which will go towards the hire of costumes etc. So, if you may very well pass for 43 (60!) in the dusk with the light behind you, we will look forward to hearing from you.

UNIFest 2022 We were devastated when we cancelled the Youth Production and UNIFest in 2020 and again in 2021. These events are an integral part of the Festival, and how we missed them. UNIFest started in Buxton in 2012 and has gone from strength to strength, introducing many students to G&S for the first time. The competition is a firm favourite with Festival audiences, and each university brings a fullscale production to compete for the UNIFest trophy. UNIFest takes place in the specially built theatre next door to the Utopia Pavilion (see page 37). 8

Each performance is adjudicated, and awards presented at the end of the Festival. Stephen Turnbull, Secretary of the Sir Arthur Sullivan Society and adjudicator of UNIFest, said: “I was absolutely delighted, as well as honoured, when Janet asked me If I would adjudicate the 2022 UniFest. More than that, I was thrilled that the UniFest is back. We all know the problems the pandemic has created for performing groups. Those problems are bad enough when they are faced by a town G&S society with an established and stable membership: a year, even two years without performing is a big setback, but not necessarily a fatal one. But for a university society, where most of the potential membership is only there for three years, it’s a huge challenge.

The last UniFest was in 2019, the next will be in 2022 - so a complete generation of students will have passed through the system. But most of the UniFest “regulars” have survived, and will be back on stage next August. This is a huge testimony to the enthusiasm and commitment of these young people and augurs well for the future of G&S. For myself, I can’t wait for next summer, safe in the knowledge that the university societies will once again make me laugh, make me cheer, make me think, perhaps even make me shed a tear or two”. Please make sure you come along and enjoy a wonderful afternoon’s entertainment. All performances start at 2.30 pm. Tickets are £15.

Buxton Programme and highlights Welcome to our 2022 programme. And it’s fantastic! We have a week jam-packed with G&S treats all day, every day. Our fringe programme will again be in St John’s Church, just across the road from the Opera House - a fantastic venue for morning talks and matinee concerts. Our acclaimed National G&S Opera Company brings THREE brand-new productions to Buxton, including the rarely performed Utopia Limited. If you would like to join one of our special Buxton accommodation packages, including theatre and fringe tickets, please see page 18.

10

Classical Pops comes to Buxton! Just in case you didn’t have enough to keep you busy during the week, we are excited to announce our new CLASSICAL POPS in St John’s Church starting at 12.30 pm. Tickets cost £7.50 and feature members from the National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company, Forbear Theatre! and Peak Opera. Unbreakable Bond! (5 August) is a specially written onewoman show about the soubrette star of the original Savoy operas, Jessie Bond. With David Eaton at the piano and starring Catrine Kirkman, the show explores the colourful life of this fantastic woman. This was a highlight of the 2019 Festival in Harrogate, and we enjoyed it so much that we asked Catrine to come back again so everyone could see this outstanding performance!

King Paramount of the south seas island of Utopia decides that his people should adopt all English customs and institutions. But, he goes a bit overboard and decrees that the kingdom and each of its inhabitants should become a “company limited” based on the English “companies act” of 1862. It is a big production with rousing choruses and great wit, satirising the immense arrogance of the vast British Empire of the time. And if you are unfamiliar with Utopia and would like to see some clips of our 2011 production, head over to www.gsfestivals.org and follow the links.

The perfect showcase for one of the UK’s leading exponents of operetta and comic music-theatre.

10.30am Fringe Theatre Tickets £7.50 G & S have always had a political edge and courted controversy both in their lifetimes and long afterwards. This light hearted talk surveys their brushes with politicians and, increasingly, with political correctness from the reaction to their satire from Victorian politicians and moralists to recent problems with the Mikado in the United States, the use of parodies of their songs about contemporary politicians and accusations that they promote racist and imperialist values.
