Welcome to the 27th

International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival

2020 For more information and to join our mailing list go to www.gsfestivals.org

Welcome to our 27th International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival. And what a swell party we have in store! Our five-star rated National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company have FIVE new productions – Sorcerer, Pinafore, Pirates and Patience PLUS The Emerald Isle; or, The Caves of Carrig-Cleena, a two-act comic opera, with music by Arthur Sullivan and Edward German, and a libretto by Basil Hood. It is believed to have had only four short professional runs since it was first produced in 1901. We can’t wait to see it!

with the Opera House and the Royal Hall simply bursting at the seams. The atmosphere was electric. We are also thrilled that audience attendance at our growing UNIFest competition continues to increase year on year and we are having to enlarge our pop-up theatre to meet the demand in 2020 which will feature ten university productions. Fantastic! And for added measure we have no fewer than five international champion societies and one runner-up competing for the coveted Festival Champions trophy.

Thank you to all our visitors who made 2019 so special. Our audience figures in Buxton were UP 13%; in Harrogate – UP 28% and in Malvern an amazing UP 34%. Would you believe 20% of our Harrogate audience attended the Festival for the first time?

The final programme is enclosed along with your accommodation packages and priority booking forms.

From Derbyshire to the Dales, the hills really were alive to the sounds of G&S

We look forward to seeing you in 2020.

And don’t forget our New Year Gala Concert in the Royal Hall on January 4th. It’s a wonderful way to start the New Year!

Stop Press It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Ian G Smith, Chairman and Founder of the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival. Ian passed away peacefully on Friday November 22nd with his family beside him. How Ian loved life! His boundless enthusiasm, phenomenal passion and incredible energy took him on a magnificent journey throughout his eighty years. Ian will be greatly missed by many. There are so many stories and so many memories of a man who well and truly loved and lived every minute of his extraordinary and remarkable life.

Youth Production

How to The Youth Production is a Festival highlight and our 2020 production will be Iolanthe directed by Rachel Harland. We need a cast of young people aged 9 to 19 years to join us. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn how a production is directed and staged in just a week. No previous experience on stage is necessary – just bags of enthusiasm and energy! The cast meet in Harrogate on Saturday 15 August for daily rehearsals until the performances (matinee and evening) on Saturday 22 August. The Youth Production offers an amazing opportunity for young people to be part of this unique Festival. Gilbert & Sullivan is the ideal introduction to opera and musical theatre. UNIFest is a firm favourite with Festival audiences and this year, nine leading universities will bring a full-scale production to Harrogate to perform on the Utopia Theatre stage. Do not expect traditional shows! These highly creative and talented groups bring a breath of fresh air with outstanding productions and outstanding interpretations. Each performance is adjudicated and numerous awards are presented at the end of the Festival. Early booking for these shows is recommended.

Ian Smith established UNIFest to offer the many university G&S societies around the country the opportunity to perform at the Festival; compete with other universities; learn about the different interpretations of G&S; and continue their love of the operas in the future. And he succeeded! Our survey of participating students in 2019 showed some very encouraging statistics. • 91% of respondents would be interested in joining a G&S Society once they had left University. • 65% said G&S had helped them with their studies Make sure you come along for a fantastic afternoon’s entertainment.

A Night to Remember

With Simon Butteriss at Chatsworth House

Tuesday 4 August

Coach departs Buxton Opera House at 6.00pm We are delighted to announce our special gala evening at one of the world’s best-loved stately homes – Chatsworth House – for a night you will certainly remember.

SCULPTURE GALLERY

The evening starts with a reception in the magnificent Sculpture Gallery and then on to the performance in Chatsworth’s own magnificent Victorian theatre. National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company Director and Festival favourite Simon Butteriss will entertain. The theatre was created by the celebrated designer William Helmsley in 1896 at the request of the 8th Duke of Devonshire. This was at a time when theatre was at its most fashionable, partly as a result of the affair of the Duke’s great friend, the Prince of Wales with the actress Lily Langtree. The Prince, who became King Edward VII, was such a regular visitor that the press dubbed Chatsworth the “Theatre Royal”. Today the theatre is limited to a hundred guests so you will need to book your tickets early for what is certain to be a highlight of the week. Tickets including coach transfers to Chatsworth and return, drinks reception and concert: £75 Tickets may be purchased on the booking forms, online at www.gsfestivals.org or from the Box Office on 01422 323 252 We regret that no Association or other discounts are available with these tickets. 16

Try something new We were delighted to discover that 20% of our audience in 2019 visited the Festival for the first time. But… we know only too well that audiences love to see the treasured trio of G&S productions: The Mikado; The Pirates of Penzance and HMS Pinafore and all too often will not venture into the theatre to see other G&S gems! This year we are urging all our visitors to try something new. If you have never seen Patience or The Sorcerer please give them a go! They are delightful shows with some beautiful music and hilarious dialogue and we know that the National G&S Opera Company will do them proud. The Emerald Isle is another must-see show

for all theatre lovers and unlikely to be performed again by professionals for many years to come. And our amateur groups also offer a fantastic opportunity to see something completely different. SavoyNet Performing group will bring a rarely performed production of The Grand Duke; Abbots Langley G&S bring Ruddigore; Trent Opera will perform The Gondoliers and 2019 Festival Champions Bus Pass Opera will stage Princess Ida. There is simply a smorgasboard of Gilbert & Sullivan operas on offer this year. You can read more about all the G&S operas at www.gsfestivals.org/the-shows

EMERALD ISLE THE

Martin Yates, Chairman of the Sir Arthur Sullivan Society, will talk about The Emerald Isle at 10.30am on Friday 7 August in Buxton and again on Friday morning 14 August in Harrogate where he will be joined by Stephen Turnbull. We would urge you to come along and find out more. The Emerald Isle, otherwise known as The Caves of Carrig-Cleena, is a comic opera with music by Arthur Sullivan and Edward German and libretto by Basil Hood. It was the last score undertaken by Sullivan who died in 1900 before completing it. Following Sullivan’s death, Richard D’Oyly Carte contracted Edward German to finish the piece. At its heart is a strong defence and promotion of Irish culture. A quirky professor is tasked with making the Irish more English and then ends up switching sides. Romantic complications cause a confrontation between the Irish patriots and the superstitious English at the supposedly haunted caves of Carric-Cleena but the professor finally comes up with a solution that works out happily for all. 22

“Verdict: Take a pair of sparkling shows” Daily Mail review 2019 (The Mikado and The Gondoliers)

To Stage FIVE new Productions! - 2020 Season The National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company is the Festival’s resident, professional Company. This five-star rated Company delighted audiences throughout its 2019 season. In 2020, five brand-new productions will be performed and staged in Buxton Opera House, The Royal Hall, Harrogate, Malvern Theatre and then on tour throughout the UK through to October. All-time favourites – The Pirates of Penzance and HMS Pinafore will be given the full treatment and there is no doubt that they will wow audiences up and down the country. Two must-see shows, rarely performed by professional companies, The Sorcerer and Patience will also take centre stage and blow your socks off! If you have never seen these two magical operas now is your chance! The music and the settings are wonderful and we just know you will love them. More information and clips from previous performances can be found on the website at www.gsfestivals.org And to top it off there will also be two performances of the Emerald Isle – one in Buxton Opera House and one in The Royal Hall Harrogate. This rarely performed comic opera with music by Arthur Sullivan and Edward German (Sullivan died before he had completed it) and libretto by Basil Hood is set in Ireland. A fantastic line-up of G&S Opera Company principals is being assembled along with an amateur chorus. Stop Press! - We are delighted to announce that NGSOC directors will include Richard Gauntlett, Simon Butteriss and Alan Borthwick.

The National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company tour will be announced in January. 24

Become a Friend of the Gilbert & Sullivan Festival WHY SHOULD YOU JOIN? It is really quite simple. It would not be possible for us to stage the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival without the support of our Friends of the Festival. Your support is fundamental to the continuation and success of the Festival and it is only through your generosity that we are able to plan for the future with confidence. We need to continue to achieve and indeed better the standards that our audience have come to expect. Since 2004 the Friends have raised over half a million pounds to support the various youth initiatives, our Bus Pass Opera production for the over 60s and the UNIFest university programme. But we want to do more and we need to particularly encourage the younger generation to develop a lifelong love of Gilbert & Sullivan. We are dedicated to preserving the legacy and ensuring the future of Gilbert & Sullivan. That is our goal. AND by joining the association you receive PRIORITY BOOKING for G&S Festival tickets in Buxton Opera House and the Royal Hall Harrogate along with ticket discounts, free postage and many other great rewards. 2.30pm PRINCESS IDA Birmingham University G&S Society Utopia Theatre. Tickets £15 Innovation has been one of the trademarks of Birmingham University’s previous visits to the Festival. Now celebrating their twelfth year as a society, this will be their sixth time in Harrogate. Princess Ida is the only Savoy opera to have three acts and is a much more serious work than any of the G&S operas that preceded it. Sullivan’s delightful score is closer to grand opera in its harmonies and ensembles than any of his earlier works and Gilbert’s wit is at its best. Two royal babies were married at birth and twenty years later Prince Hilarion is anxious to be reunited with his bride. Unfortunately, bold feminist Princess Ida is running a women’s only university so the dashing prince has only one option; he must don a dress and woo his bride. A comic battle of the sexes ensues with hilarious results. 7.30pm THE GONDOLIERS Trent Opera The Royal Hall. Tickets from £21 - £32 Trent Opera are one of the most highly acclaimed non-professional theatre companies and have been captivating Festival audiences since 1996 winning the coveted Champion’s trophy and numerous awards. The Gondoliers is a cracking opera, full of colour and simply joyous. It is, of course, a love story. And a case of mistaken identity. Two gondoliers have just got married but have been informed that one of them is the King of Barataria. But which one? Wonderful melodies and dances including our favourite: the Cachucha. 10.00pm The Festival Club opens in the Utopia Pavilion. Great entertainment, bar and light snacks are available. Did you know that “Rio Douro” translates roughly from Portuguese as the "River of Gold"? Theatrical Adventures are returning there in Autumn 2020. Join us and see for yourself. When the sun catches the water the river does indeed gleam like gold. We were last on the Douro in 2017 and everyone agreed it was one of our outstanding adventures. The Douro cuts across Portugal from wild and rugged wilderness on the Spanish frontier to the old city of Oporto and the Atlantic beyond. Grapes grown on its steeply rising banks have been sending forth legendary port wines for centuries and it has also got spectacular landscapes and a scattering of World Heritage sites. This is a cruise for the connoisseur. It includes all meals from dinner on day one to breakfast on day eight; all drinks both with meals and served at the bar throughout the trip (excluding champagne and wines on the wine list). All excursions listed in the itinerary; a welcome cocktail party and gala dinner – and entertainment of a quality you will only find on a Theatrical Adventure. Every night we have a concert featuring our international professional artistes; we add some flamenco- themed dancing; Portuguese Fado entertainment and traditional folk music.

Unbreakable Bond is a specially written one-woman show about the soubrette star of the original Savoy operas, Jessie Bond. With David Eaton at the piano, the show explores the colourful life of this fantastic woman whose captivating stage presence drew admiration from both Gilbert and Sullivan in her D’Oyly Carte debut creating the role of Hebe in HMS Pinafore. 7.30pm RUDDIGORE Abbots Langley Gilbert & Sullivan Society The Royal Hall. It is believed to have had only four short professional runs since it was first produced in 1901. Directed by Alan Borthwick, this is a rare opportunity to see the opera.
