ABOUT THE FESTIVAL
Getting Around
Holiday Inn Majestic Hotel Premier Inn
Utopia Pavilion The Royal Hall Savoy Theatre The picture above shows just how compact a Festival we have. With the Crown Hotel and the Old Swan equally close and some excellent nearby guesthouses you can see just how easy it is to get around. Your comfort is our first priority. You can walk from the Utopia Pavilion into the Royal Hall and across and into the Savoy Theatre without leaving the complex. It really is as easy as that!
The Festival brings together a wonderful mix of leading performing groups who compete for the coveted Festival championship trophy. There are also professional performances from the outstanding National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company, Charles Court Opera and the international EGOS THEATRE travelling from Barcelona with a “gothic” Ruddigore - in Catalan! Adjoining the Royal Hall on one side is a veritable Gilbert and Sullivan wonderland called the "Utopia Pavilion." This is the place where everyone can meet from early morning until the early hours. There is a wide range of catering facilities; a bar; G&S shop; free film shows; free lunchtime entertainment and every evening after the curtain falls the Festival club comes to life here, with singing and entertainment. And to the other side of the Royal Hall you will find the magnificent entrance to our specially created "Savoy Theatre." This is the venue for all our matinee performances which include the UNIFest competition featuring leading British universities performing a fully staged Gilbert and Sullivan opera. As you can read in this newsletter there is a wide and varied range of performances scheduled throughout the Festival, including of course our youth production of "HMS Pinafore." The Royal Hall Complex is also the venue for our morning fringe activities which will include some interesting and original presentations. With Harrogate's major hotels only minutes away by foot you can see why this is such an ideal venue for such a special Festival. Join us in the morning and you needn't leave the complex until the doors are closing to mark the end of another memorable day in the life of this fascinating festival.
There is no doubt the magic of G&S endures and the festival embraces the very best. We look forward to sharing it with you in August 4

BUS PASS OPERA
Specially for singers and actors over 60. Bus Pass Opera was formed in 2014 and grows in popularity every year. Last year’s performance of Iolanthe was fantastic and we are looking forward to a cracking production of “Patience” in 2017. The show is performed in The Royal Hall on Thursday 17 August at 7.30pm and rehearsals take place in Harrogate from Thursday August 10th. This is not for the fainthearted and you need to know all your lines!
THE FESTIVAL YOUTH PRODUCTION – Ages 9-19
Always a highlight of the Festival, this year’s production is HMS Pinafore and the performance will be on Saturday afternoon, 12 August. Reheasals will be in Harrogate from Saturday 5 August.
LUNCHTIME ENTERTAINMENT
Every lunchtime throughout the Festival there is free, musical entertainment in the Utopia Pavilion from 1pm-1.30pm. Do you have some party pieces you would like to perform? Let us know. We will provide a pianist to accompany you.
SINGING FROM THE GALLERY
Every Saturday and Sunday evening before the curtain rises, you can experience the Festival’s “Singing from the Gallery”. This is a great way to get in the mood and if you like to sing, now is your chance! But don’t worry if you don’t know the words or don’t want to sing – just soak up the special atmosphere in this magnificent theatre and enjoy! Be in your seats by 7.10pm.

Every year we return from the Festival full of bright ideas as to how we can improve the next. One of the more exciting innovations that we have announced for 2017 is the appointment of “Ambassadors” who will work with others in this country and overseas to help build and develop future Festivals. We want people from around the country, across the United States, Canada and Australia - and anywhere else in the world to help us promote and find the groups to attend future Festivals. We already have volunteers raring to go in Ireland, North Wales, Sheffield, Newbury, Grantham, South West Surrey, Bolton, Isle of Wight, Stockholm and Tasmania. We will provide these “Ambassadors” with letters and appropriate promotional material. The success of our Festival depends on attendances in Harrogate - or wherever the Opera Company visit. We believe our “Ambassadors” will make a significant contribution to helping us increase the numbers of our audiences and the long-term security of the Festival. So for example from June 1st 2017 we need people living in and around North Yorkshire to put up posters, leave flyers and What’s on Guides in the local community. If you could help we would love to hear from you. We would like to have an “Army of Ambassadors” in place by the end of the year - if you are interested in volunteering please write to janet@gsfestivals.org.
We would love to hear from you: janet@gsfestivals.org 01422 323252 12
BUS PASS SINGERS
One of the significant successes of our Festival since its move to Harrogate has been the introduction of our Bus Pass Opera annual production – exclusively for over 60s. The performers, who travel to Harrogate from as far afield as Australia come from all walks of life. Some have never sung on a stage before and join in enthusiastically with those who have. The principal line-up boasts an amazing pedigree of experience in performing G&S and they certainly demonstrate that age is no barrier to the delivery of Gilbert's words and Sullivan's music. CANADIAN RESEARCH SHOWS THAT GROUP SINGING IS CHEAPER THAN THERAPY; HEALTHIER THAN DRINKING AND MORE FUN THAN WORKING OUT.
"It is the one thing in life where feeling better is pretty much guaranteed!" Did you know the major benefits from singing – physically, emotionally and socially? PHYSICALLY Singing exercises our lungs. It tones up our intercostal muscles and our diaphragm. It can improve our sleep. Benefit our hearts and circulation by improving our aerobic capacity and we decrease muscle tension.
EMOTIONALLY It increases our self esteem and confidence. It increases feelings of well-being. It enhances mood. It is useful as a stress reducer.
There are some pretty positive statements in these lists! Most of us will live longer than our parents. Did you know one in five of the UK population is 60 or over – and a high percentage are looking for new healthy activities. That is why we are looking to expand our range of programmes for our own large over-60 community. We are launching BUS PASS SINGERS - a regional UK music club exclusively for the over 60s. The club will offer members an opportunity to sing opera, operetta, musical theatre and Gilbert and Sullivan in six easy afternoon sessions offering a programme of beautiful music for the over 60s, rehearsed and performed with like-minded people.
You can register your participation on the pull-out booking form on page 35. 13
SOCIALLY It enables us to meet more people. It is a forum for sharing. Brings people together and encourages a sense of community. It is a forum for fun and laughter.
BUS PASS SINGERS A REGIONAL MUSIC CLUB FOR THE OVER 60s
We are hoping that within a short space of time it will offer participants the opportunity to perform regionally, nationally and potentially internationally. We are picking a range of famous opera choruses. You will recognise them immediately – though you probably never thought you would be singing them! We will be adding memorable chorus numbers from operetta and musical theatre and a potential performance of Gilbert and Sullivan's “Trial by Jury.” By the time of next year’s Festival we hope to have established at least half a dozen regional choirs for our Over 60s programme in different parts of the country. The musical content will be supervised by “Maestro” Andrew Nicklin who has worked in many capacities at the Festival for over 20 years. He will supervise the appointment of local pianists and musical directors. He will attend many of the rehearsals. He will coordinate the "star" soloists who will perform in the local concerts that each region will stage at the end of their rehearsal period. He will also put together an extra special programme for a national concert when all regional Bus Pass Singer groups will join together for a national concert in Harrogate during the course of the annual Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. And we are already looking at the possibility of taking a choir on tour to perform in some of the most beautiful and historic churches, abbeys and monasteries in Europe . We are hoping that our “Ambassadors” will work with us to establish the groups. You can volunteer now by emailing your interest to: janet@gsfestivals.org. There will be a nominal cost for participation which will hopefully cover the cost of hiring
the rehearsal facility, pianist, musical director, star soloists and provision of music. This has been set at a modest £30 per rehearsal. We hope that we will have the first regional choirs up and running by Spring next year.
FROM WEST END TO BROADWAY We plan our first major national concert as Bus Pass Singers in Harrogate on Saturday, August 19th. This will comprise a two-day course of rehearsals on Friday and Saturday (10am, to 1pm and 2pm to 5pm) led by course director Andrew Nicklin. This concert has been timed specifically to allow people participating in Bus Pass Opera to stay on and sing in the concert if they wish. The concert is called "From West End to Broadway." There will be a registration fee of £50 for participants to attend the four rehearsals. The fee covers the cost of two sandwich lunches; music, orchestra, soloists and course director. Although we expect it will be heavily supported by the over 60s for this first special event we have agreed that anyone of any age is welcome to join in.

SPONSORSHIP AND ADVERTISING PACKAGES
SPONSORS WANTED
Businesses and individuals love to be associated with success! Our International G&S Festival is being hailed as one of North Yorkshire’s major successes. This year HIC’s Economic Impact report for August reported 14,000 visitors to the town and a £5million boost to the local economy. Without doubt our Festival was the principal contributor to this healthy report. Our own survey showed that 57% of our visitors travelled more than 100 miles to the Festival and stayed on average 5.7 nights in the area. Our international visitors added a massive 11% to total attendance showing that this is a Festival putting Harrogate firmly on the global map. That’s why sponsorship and advertising should be coming more and more attractive to local and national businesses. We have prepared a special sponsorship pack available from: janet@gsfestivals.org.
FOR EXAMPLE...You can sponsor a performance of the National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company in Harrogate for as little as £5,000 to include 20 front row Grand Circle tickets; a champagne reception for your clients/guests; post show private buffet supper with stars from the show; pull up banners around the Royal Hall announcing your support; acknowledgement of your sponsorship from the stage and a full page advert in the Souvenir Opera Company programme which will be sold throughout the tour of the Opera Company before and after Harrogate. Really outstanding value for money.

Similar packages are available to sponsor the Festival’s International Competition and popular elements of the event including the University UNIFest competition; the very popular Bus Pass Opera production and that of the Youth Production. We are also looking for someone to sponsor a mobile ticket office that would visit North Yorkshire towns and villages in the months leading up to the Festival. You can also contact Ian or Janet Smith on 01422 323252 to discuss your ideas of a tailor-made package.
ADVERTISING OPPORTUNITIES BEGIN AS LOW AS £100. The Gilbert & Sullivan Festival is one of the very few national arts events of its kind that receives no public funding whatsoever and relies solely on ticket sales and the generosity of its supporters. It is a not-for-profit organisation. Email janet@gsfestivals.org for an Information Pack 15

JOIN TODAY
We rely on the generosity of our Friends and supporters to sustain the Festival as well as our other work throughout the year. Eighty-five per cent of our income comes from ticket sales. Whilst this is an amazing achievement in itself it also poses an amazing risk. Two years ago our move to Harrogate saw our ticket sales drop quite significantly. Whilst not a surprise – it took us nearly ten years to really establish ourselves in Buxton – it meant we had to make up the difference from other sources which have now run out! This means that in the future to meet these costs, we are largely reliant on those individuals who choose to support our work and underpin the Festival’s continuing development. Please help us keep this wonderful Festival going and join our fantastic family of supporters. Thank you!
WILL YOU BECOME A FRIEND OF OUR CHARITY?
You can join on page 36 at one of four levels from as little as £35 to as much as you would care to donate. Membership brings a range of tangible benefits, including priority booking of Festival tickets and access to other musical events throughout the year. Your continued support is vital to the continued success of our work, supporting our productions, our UNIFest and other Young Artists’ Programmes. Our “Gilbert and Sullivan For All” Outreach Initiative is working closely with retirement homes and care homes across Harrogate and District, and also with alzheimer and dementia patients and their carers. A special concert will be presented exclusively to them in the Savoy Theatre on Saturday afternoon August 5th. We receive no public funding support. Your contribution helps us preserve the legacy and ensure a future for Gilbert and Sullivan. You can join at any time of the year and enjoy a full 12 months of benefits for a nominal contribution. We hope you will renew if you are an existing friend – or join if you are a new friend. You can also join online at www.gsfestivals.org.

CAR PARKS
Car parking is always difficult in busy town centres and this nifty website can certainly help you find the right spot! Simply type where you are going – eg – The Royal Hall or your Hotel in the box “Where are you Going” and you will get a map showing all the parking areas, how much it costs and how long it will take you to walk from the car par to your destination. Very clever!

BOOKING TICKETS
You can't beat a Sunday roast lunch – especially when you are enjoying a few days away from home. We have planned a special G&S lunch on Sunday, August 13 following the church service in the West Park United Reformed Church. It is a 10 minute walk to the venue, the Crown Hotel – and it is all downhill! Time to work up your appetite and enjoy good food and good company. You can book your seats now on the "fringe programme" on page 32.
Do you remember the costume parades we enjoyed in the early days of Buxton? We plan to try one in Harrogate next August. – Friday, August 11 leaving the Utopia Pavilion at 12:30pm and marching up and round the town centre. We will be back by 1.15pm to parade in the Utopia and select the winning costumes. We hope this parade might attract some television coverage. We also hope the groups that are rehearsing in Harrogate will join us and that many of our visitors will either bring their own costume or borrow one of ours to swell the numbers. If you would like one of our costumes email janet@gsfestivals.org.
Open Harrogate is a website and mobile phone application that aims to make your journeys in and around Harrogate easy and enjoyable. It is also an inspirational tool that will help you explore the town for fun or simply find the places that you want to go to. The central aim of this site is to promote walking, cycling and public transport options as enjoyable and fulfilling alternatives to car use. Go to www.openharrogate.co.uk for more information. 18
Talking of overseas groups we are delighted to welcome back Egos Theatre Barcelona with their fascinating “gothic” production of Ruddigore presented in Catalan. It really has to be seen. Not a night for the traditionalist but certainly a night for those who appreciate the internationalism of Gilbert and Sullivan and are interested to see how other professional groups from other parts of the world interpret the works. We have paired it with Charles Court Opera's "Trial by Jury." A double winner!
Earlier this month we were delighted to welcome 70+ supporters who joined our cruise from Budapest through Serbia, Croatia, Bulgaria and Romania. They had a ball. But how could it have failed. The entertainment was unbelievable including a Cox and Box from Richard Suart, Bruce Graham and Nick Sales. You don't get this kind of entertainment on many river cruises. That is what is so special about our Theatrical Adventures. We have five for you to read about on pages 51 to 56.

BOOK THE 2018 SILVER ANNIVERSDARY DATES NOW WE REALLY ARE PLANNING AHEAD. 2018 will see the silver anniversary of our festival. Twenty-five years! Who would have thought it would have lasted so long? We are planning a really th special year. Three full weeks – four weekends. We will open on Saturday, August 4 and run through to and including Sunday the 26th. Over those 25 years we have had seven winners from overseas including HANCOCK COUNTY from Maine USA, THE LAMPLIGHTERS SAN FRANCISCO; HOUSTON G&S SOCIETY; FESTIVAL PRODUCTIONS IRELAND and THE BLUE HILL TROUPE from New York. It would be a real thrill if any of these former winners were able to join us on this very special occasion. Indeed it would be a pleasure if any of our previous overseas groups were able to return. So far we have two commitments – one from Canada and the other from United States.

A trail of research for a new book on Scenic Design has provided some fascinating answers and reveals unexpected secrets of Carte’s working practices. Who was the shadowy artist that provided many of the 1920s sets yet was never credited? An untold story of the closing of the Scenery Stores and the truth about the dispersal of 17 full sets of scenery. Much of the internal information was thought to have gone to the grave yet can now be pieced together to give the complete picture.

The poor Baronet of Ruddigore is cursed – if he doesn’t commit a crime every day, his life will end in agony. He will certainly need to put his thinking cap on to get out of this one. Edwin doesn’t turn up! It is a most amusing 40 minutes and leads beautifully into “Trial.” The music of Jilted is largely Sullivan and we are hoping that many of the University Students who were runners-up in the International Competition last year will come back and present it. Another “first” for the Festival.

Following last year’s sell-out talk, David returns to take us on another tour of G&S memorabilia with items drawn from his extensive collection. G&S is a collecting area to suit all pockets. A perfectly timed presentation in advance of our memorabilia fair on Saturday.

FREE £15.00
Birmingham University G&S Society had an eventful visit to Harrogate last year. The coach driver thought he was taking them to "Highgate" and it was only when they joined the M1 at Watford that the students realised the mistake. Undeterred they turned around and brought an outstanding Patience to the Festival winning Best Male Performer, Best Female Performer, Best Character Actress and the Adjudicator's special award. This year they return with “The Sorceress.” The more familiar John Wellington Wells becomes Joan Wellington Wells! It will be a show well worth seeing.

FREE £18 - £28
Expect a swashbuckling Pirates on peak form! Directed by Ian Henderson, Peak Opera was founded in 2005 and has gone from strength to strength bringing performers from a wide variety of sources. They have occupied “runners-up” position in 2014 and 2016. The Pirates of Penzance is a madcap romp from start to finish and one of the best-loved of all the G&S operas. Hopeless, hapless policemen, tender-hearted pirates, a splendidly eccentric Major General and his bevy of beautiful daughters all make for simply wonderful entertainment. A delight!

A FAMILY AFFAIR, FIONA AUCOTT
Fiona Aucott, Great-granddaughter of John Hollingsworth, tells the untold story of Richard D’Oyly Carte and his cousin in the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company. After many years of research into family stories that had been handed down through the generations, Fiona has unearthed some fascinating family links within the early Opera Company. Presented with photos and illustrations she will tell of her journey of discovery and the new information that has confirmed the family lore. A must for those who are interested in the early days of the D’Oyly Carte and Gilbert & Sullivan story.

LOpSoc have a strong community of members who share a great enthusiasm for all the work that they do – and in particular the two annual productions. The Society perform a great variety of light operettas from Gilbert and Sullivan to works by other composers including Noel Coward, Franz Lehar and Edward German. In addition, they occasionally perform original works written by students at the University. They have become regular visitors to the festival which is a highlight of their calendar.

7.30pm The Yeomen of the Guard, New London Opera Group Royal Hall £18 - £28 The Yeomen of the Guard, or The Merryman and His Maid is the most operatic of the Gilbert & Sullivan masterpieces. Set in the Tower of London it is the story of a prisoner on the brink of execution, two girls who love him and a sad and jilted jester. The mood is altogether darker than any of the other G&S operas. The music is said to be some of Sullivan’s finest. The New London Opera Group (known affectionately as “newLOG”) was founded in 2003 and although based in London, the group enjoys a very happy second home at the Riverhead Theatre in Louth, Lincolnshire, where the youth and energy of the company has given them a loyal following.

SINGING THE SPAS, IAN BRADLEY
Ian Bradley presents an illustrated talk on the ways spa towns – and especially Harrogate – have been immortalised in song. There will be songs about taking the waters, choosing suitable hotels, spa diets and about the romances and dalliances that take place in the watering places of Europe that have been rightly described as the world’s last enchanted places.
1.00pm Lunchtime Entertainment Utopia Pavilion 2.30pm Rock ‘n’ Roll Pirates of Penzance Savoy Theatre
FREE £15.00
A full production of Pirates of Penzance accompanied with 1950’s rock n roll music! Back in July 2016 Alan and Pamela wrote, directed and produced the 1957 BBC show Six Five Special. It was a big hit with young and old alike. Pamela and Alan love their G&S and have been supporting the Festival for almost 20 years. Watching and listening to G&S and rock ‘n roll music, Alan had an idea. Could he just change the Pirates music to 1950’s rock n roll. So with his musical director friend Graham, they tried it, keeping the very same story line, and using 2 guitars, double bass, drums, keyboard and three sax. Wow you are in for a real treat; you will be foot tapping, singing along and maybe even jiving! It is family fun full of nostalgic entertainment.

10.00pm Late night Festival Club and Cabaret Utopia Pavilion
£3.00
We are delighted that Alan Borthwick and his friends from north of the border have agreed to bring a full-scale musical production of Engaged to the Festival in 2017. Gilbert’s play “Engaged” was first produced in 1877. It was called a Savoy Opera without music and when the Gilbert copyright expired in 1961 it provided the opportunity for two Bristol academics to turn it into a Savoy Opera with music! The adaptation uses lyrics and music from the four lesser-known G&S operas: Thespis, The Sorcerer, Utopia Ltd and The Grand Duke and from other scores. “Di Ballo” is featured as overture and thematically in the opera itself. The intention of Engaged was to assemble a characteristic Gilbert & Sullivan opera from existing and unfamiliar G&S material. It certainly worked. This is a rare opportunity to see this delightful production. 39

D’OYLY CARTE: THE INSIDE STORY: ROBERTA MORRELL
This new book written by Roberta Morrell looks at the life of the historic D'Oyly Carte Opera Company between 1950 and its sad demise in 1982. After thrilling audiences on both sides of the Atlantic from the time of Queen Victoria, the last great touring repertory company said farewell to its audiences after 107 years. This new book details the working life of every department of the famous company, from its London management to the wardrobe department, as told by Roberta Morrell, herself a performer with the company for 10 years. Having travelled all over the UK to interview her former colleagues, Roberta uses their stories and recollections to present an insight into the world of a theatre company on tour for 48 weeks of every year. Personal tales of travel, theatrical digs, mad-cap parties, on-stage disasters, overseas tours and glamorous occasions are told by singers, musicians, back-stage staff and senior managers proud to have been a part of the D'Oyly Carte story.

Remember Oxbridge Opera? They had a pretty long stretch back in the days of Buxton: a troupe founded by a group of friends based at the UK’s oldest universities soon morphed into a large scale operation that encompassed the very best. Their productions were high quality, slickly paced, beautifully sung. But, they have moved on and Oxbridge Opera just didn’t seem to be right anymore. Hence HighJinks Opera emerges from the egg laid by the legacy of Oxbridge. This performance of The Gondoliers will be bright, vibrant, not set on a spaceship in the twenty ninth century and most of all …. fun!.

Do you do any "outreach?" Are you successful? Are you prepared to share your success stories? There is no doubt G&S is struggling among many traditional amateur groups – and yet it is thriving at university level. Can we bring the two together? This is an honest attempt to open up a discussion between any and all interested parties. We want people to share their successes and failures. Will you? If you would be prepared to go onto our programme please email: janet@gsfestivals.org

THE IMPORTANCE OF DANCE TO THE G&S REPERTOIRE, MICHAEL SYMES
Michael Symes will lead a fascinating session highlighting the importance of dance to the G&S repertoire and how it so often "lifts" productions. He will discuss how dance as much as words and music led to the creation of the (especially American) musical. That will lead into a consideration of what can be considered ‘original’ or ‘traditional’ dances as far as we can ascertain. We hope this session may lead to something more focused for the major “Magic of G&S” symposium we plan in 2018.

Runners up in the UNIFest competition last year, King’s College London also won the Best Director award, shared the best musical director award and won the best female voice. This year they return with The Sorcerer. Now in their 29th year this is the only student based G&S Society in London. Each year they perform one of the operas. Gilbert himself studied at King’s College. The group audition for the lead roles but it is an open chorus as the society believes the shows are so much fun that everyone should have the opportunity of participating.

MIKADO IN AMERICA: CONQUESTS & CONTROVERSIES, RUSS SYPE, USA
The Mikado took America by storm in 1885 and took its place as a major fixture in the American theatre from that time forward. In 1910, H L Mencken noted that, “One night in October in this country alone, there were no less than 117 performances.” This presentation provides a history of The Mikado in America, ending with a discussion of the current controversies over the portrayal of the Japanese by largely white actors. These protests, and the responses to them, continue to keep Gilbert and Sullivan relevant.

Known familiarly as NUGSS, this is one of the oldest student societies in the University, established in 1952. They made their debut last year and we are delighted to welcome them back with the performance of Ruddigore. Each year the society perform one of the 14 G&S operas during the spring term and in the summer they mount a smaller production – often an original libretto set to music by Sullivan and other composers of the Victorian and Edwardian period. This is very much a social society which meets regularly together and goes out of its way to support local groups and professional productions.

FREE £18 - £28
This will be the fourth year that the Festival has mounted a “Senior Citizens” show – aptly named Bus Pass Opera – and it is beginning to acquire something of a cult following. Last year the combined ages of those on the Royal Hall stage exceeded 2500 years and what a fantastic performance of Iolanthe they gave us. It was hilarious, touching and some of those voices were simply superb! But it just goes to show that you do not need to be written off just because you have reached a “certain age”. There is still plenty of life left to live and plenty more for us give! To prove the point we are extending the concept to include “Bus Pass Singers” a regional music club for the over 60s. As some Canadian friends said, “Group singing is cheaper than therapy, healthier than drinking and more fun than working out”. More information on page 13. Join us! If you would like to apply to join this production, and/or the Bus Pass Singers please email janet@gsfestivals.org or call 01422 323252.

Stephen Godward has been performing at the Festival for 20 years – and won many prestigious awards. This morning he introduces us to Richard Temple – another man of the theatre. Richard Barker Cobb Temple (2 March 1846 – 19 October 1912) was an English opera singer, actor and stage director, best known for his G&S performances. Temple joined the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company in 1877 and created most of the bass-baritone roles in the Savoy Operas.

All in all, an outstanding production. We can't wait to see what they do with Pirates!
6.50pm Pre-performance Talk Utopia Pavilion 7.30pm A double bill! Trial By Jury, Charles Court Opera and Ruddigore, Egos Theatre (Spain) The Royal Hall
FREE £18 - £28
EGOS Theatre brought their “Ruddigore” to Buxton as a festival fringe event. This year the talented group return with a full-scale performance in the Royal Hall. It first played for six successful months in Barcelona and has received much critical acclaim and awards including Best Musical (Barcelona critics award); Best show voted by the public (San Miguel award); best make-up and hair. They describe it as a “supernatural musical” full of love, death and betrayal. The magazine “Que Fem” described it as "a show full of Gothic terror and humour but played with excellent musical prowess" by this outstanding young professional company. The show is nothing quite like any G&S you will have seen before. It is non-traditional. It follows the Ruddigore story and it demonstrates the continuing popularity of G&S around the world. And to complement this talented company we are delighted to welcome back Charles Court Opera with their equally interesting and hilariously funny production of "Trial by Jury." A fantastic evening. Make sure you book early.

ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT PRINCESS IDA, STEPHEN TURNBULL We are pleased to welcome the return of Stephen Turnbull, Sir Arthur Sullivan Society secretary, who this morning paints a fascinating picture of the development of Princess Ida. Princess Ida is based on a narrative poem by Alfred, Lord Tennyson called The Princess (1847), and Gilbert’s farcical musical play, based on the poem, in 1870. He lifted much of the dialogue of Princess Ida directly from his 1870 farce. You can be sure of many new, exciting and interesting twists to this presentation which will have a significant musical contribution.

A TASTE OF THINGS TO COME
2018 - OUR 25TH ANNIVERSARY
2018 of course is the 25th Anniversary of what has become the world’s largest celebration of G&S and we are planning a bonanza Festival. We expect it will cover a full three weeks and four weekends (Sat August 4th to Bank Holiday Monday August 27th) in Harrogate and we are hoping to welcome back many Festival winners from previous years.
WOULD YOU LIKE TO PERFORM?
We already have the prospects of two international productions at the 2018 Festival –one from Canada and the other from the USA. We would love to welcome back any of the other international groups who have graced our Festival over the past 25 years and hopefully this early indication of some of our plans will enable Societies to start planning now for another “trip of a lifetime.”
CALL FOR PAPERS
I am equally delighted to announce a follow up to the fascinating Buxton three day symposium – The Magic Of Gilbert and Sullivan with hopefully some new, controversial and ground breaking presentations. I hope very much that we will attract speakers from around the world who will paint fascinating pictures of the lives and times of Britain's most famous theatrical partnership. Who were they? What was so special about them? Are they gaining, retaining or losing their appeal? What mark did they make on musical theatre? This announcement is really a "call for papers.” If you would like to be one of our guest speakers I would welcome a two paragraph abstract of your proposed paper. If invited to speak we will offer you two nights complimentary accommodation, bed and breakfast; and of course complimentary registration to the conference. If you have suggestions of interesting speakers that I may not know, please let me have their details. You can email me at: ian@gsfestivals.org.
HADDON HALL FOR BUXTON AND HARROGATE
Perhaps the most exciting announcement for 2018 is a planned definitive production of Sullivan and Grundy's "Haddon Hall” by a second National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company group which will be established in summer 2018. A strong line-up of established Gilbert and Sullivan principals will work alongside an auditioned chorus who will probably rehearse in the Sheffield area for weekends in June and July. It is hoped that this will attract an extremely strong singing chorus from Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire. It is planned to present the show in Buxton Opera House as part of our annual visit and probably twice in Harrogate – once at the beginning of the Festival and once towards the end. Andrew Nicklin who scored such a major personal success with his production of Utopia Limited with the Opera Company will direct the show. We already have some possible sponsorship for the production and assuming our progress goes according to plan we hope very much that this could see the start of an annual ‘Sullivan without Gilbert’ or ‘Gilbert without Sullivan’ production. If, even at this early stage you know you would want to be considered for the production please drop me an email confirming name, voice and previous experience. ian@gsfestivals.org We can't promise to answer every dream – but if you have an idea of something you would like to see repeated in 2018, or something completely new do drop me a line. 64
