Who are Theatrical Adventures? They are exactly the same people who organise the annual G&S festival and run the National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company. In a former life Ian, Janet and Neil Smith were all heavily involved in the travel industry organising massive conferences around the world. When G and S enthusiasts suggested they organise a cruise up the Nile some seven years ago they jumped at the opportunity and went on to establish a company which specialises in Gilbert and Sullivan and Operetta cruises up the rivers of Europe and beyond. Any surpluses from the cruises are ploughed back into supporting the Festival. And they have received some rave reviews for their efforts. Earlier this year they enjoyed a musical Danube adventure. Here are some of the responses to a questionnaire to participants: How would you rate the cruise overall: 107 marks out of 110 How would you rate the comfort of your cabin: 104 out of 110 How would you rate the food:
103 out of 110
How would you rate the entertainment: 108 out of 110 How would you rate the organisation: 103 out of 110 If you like river cruising you will love Theatrical Adventures and one or other of the Smiths is always on hand to make sure you enjoy it! You can read about this year's cruises up the Nile in Egypt in October and the Rhine in November in this guide.
We would love you to join us! Box OďŹƒce: www.gsfestivals.org

] WELCOME ] to the
25 festival th
For 25 years the International Gilbert and Sullivan Festival has attracted an audience from around the world to its annual “jamboree” and this Silver Anniversary year is no exception. Almost 100 Canadian performers and supporters are flying all the way from British Columbia with a performance of “The Gondoliers.” America’s oldest G&S Society, the Savoy Company from Philadelphia are returning with a performance of Iolanthe. Each group will spend almost a week in the town enjoying the Festival and the sights and sounds of Harrogate and North Yorkshire. Gilbert and Sullivan is as popular today as ever with recent productions from ENO, Opera North, English Touring Opera and of course Sasha Regan’s all male ensemble. G&S is being performed currently in St Petersburg Russia; France, Germany and even in Japan. Some people will spend the whole three weeks at this year’s festival with wall to wall G&S from 9am every morning to the early hours of the following morning. The day time fringe programme this year gives nine British Universities the opportunity to bring their own full scale production to Harrogate Theatre. Approximately 2000 people will perform on stage or backstage this year – the biggest celebration of Gilbert and Sullivan that the world has ever seen.
We look forward to welcoming you! Box Office: www.gsfestivals.org

10 REASONS WHY WE LOVE THE
1
We meet fantastic people from all over the world who share a passion for Gilbert & Sullivan. And what a friendly bunch they are. It is impossible to feel alone or lonely at a G&S Festival – there’s just too much going on and too many people to sit and chat with. Long-standing friendships and even marriages have happened as a result of that first discussion about a show just seen….
2
You can see just about every opera Gilbert & Sullivan wrote at the Festival – or usually most of them. And that includes rarely performed productions such as Utopia Ltd and The Grand Duke. It’s a wonderful way to really get to know Sullivan’s wonderful music and Gilbert’s laser-sharp wit.
3
You can perform at the Festival from 9 years of age to over 90! There is an opportunity for everyone. The Festival Youth Production is open to anyone between 9 and 19 years. The UNIFest competition caters for students. The competing societies take care of those in-between years and the magnificent Bus Pass Opera gives people 60 years and above the chance to “tread the boards” again in The Royal Hall. And in 2018 we have a 92 year old gentleman flying all the way from New Zealand specially to perform in their production of The Yeomen of the Guard.
4 5
You can see or hear “something G&S” from 9.30 every morning until the early hours the following morning when the Festival Club goers are finally shooed out of the doors by security staff! The National Festival Orchestra, led by Sally Robinson has played at every Festival since the very first in 1994. Their players are, without doubt, an amazingly talented bunch of individuals who play morning, noon and night with such aplomb. Simply the finest G&S band you will find.
GILBERT & SULLIVAN FESTIVAL
6 7 8
There is a great sense of “family” at the Festival and it’s very usual to be sitting at a table in the Festival Club with one or another of the “stars” of the professional National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company. Performers come from all over the world. This year we have large groups joining us from Fraser Valley in Canada and the Savoy Company will visit from Philadelphia.
Where else could you find a four-day event featuring more than 30 speakers from 10 countries sharing their views of Gilbert & Sullivan? This year “The Magic of Gilbert & Sullivan” delves into the history, the music and many other things G&S. Experts from around the world will take part in this fascinating insight into the UK’s first musical theatre partnership that paved the way for Rodgers and Hammerstein, Rice and Lloyd Webber and many more.
9
The National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company is the Festival’s own, professional company and every year performs a minimum of four brand new productions. In 2018 they will perform SIX new productions including a first professional look at Haddon Hall for more than 120 years. A versatile and hugely talented group of professionals who also “hit the road” after the Festival and go on tour around the UK. What an achievement.
10
It’s all done without any public funding whatsoever……… and there aren’t many opera festivals and indeed opera companies in the UK who can say that!!

BUXTON Celebrating our silver jubilee year
This is where it all began in 1994 and it is appropriate that our Silver Jubilee Festival celebrations "kick off" in the magnificent Buxton Opera House at the end of July. Just think of all the water that has flowed under the G&S bridge over those 25 years. We will be looking back at many of the highlights at our Gala Dinner in the Pavilion Arts Centre on Monday, July 30 - and hopefully welcoming many of the personalities from on stage, backstage and front of house who have contributed to the amazing development of what has become the world's largest celebration of Gilbert and Sullivan. Another memorable evening will be the Derby G&S Company production of "the Mikado." We were shocked to hear that after 50 years the festival's most successful performing group would close after their performance in Buxton on Friday, August 3. We hope you will want to help us make it an amazingly memorable night. Derby have won the international trophy on six occasions and many individual awards. Many of their members have travelled with us to America and to Lanzarote. If you haven't got your tickets get them now! Each evening following the performance you are invited to enjoy an informal gathering in the Pavilion restaurant area .We look forward to meeting you there!

Haddon Hall
One of the most exciting elements of this year's festival will be the very special performance of Haddon Hall which will be performed in both Buxton and Harrogate by the National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company with a supporting amateur chorus. This will be the first time this Sullivan and Grundy Opera will have been presented with a professional line-up of principals since its first production in 1892. Haddon Hall is a dramatisation of a 19th century legend: Dorothy Vernon's elopement in 1563 with John Manners, son of Thomas Manners, first Earl of Rutland. For the opera, Grundy moved the story forward to about 1660 adding the conflict between the Royalists and the Roundheads as a backdrop to the plot. Sarah Helsby Hughes, artistic director of Heritage Opera will direct the production. Andrew Nicklin is the musical director. We are delighted to announce some "big" name artists who have already confirmed their participation. Bruce Graham rejoins the company after his fantastic success with Follies at the National Theatre; Richard Suart, Donald Maxwell and Nick Sales are three more of our big-name stars. Along with David Menezes (Charles Court Opera); Rachel Harland and Bee Bradley this show promises to be a highlight of our Silver Jubilee celebratory year.

Goodbye Derby G&S Company “What we did for love!”
Just over fifty years ago the Spondon Musical Society rose from the ashes of the Spondon Choral Union, whose final concert was made up of two parts, the first of which was their favourite choral music and the second part was a performance of Trial by Jury, which my sister, Judith had suggested they should do. Judith persuaded them that I knew a great deal about G & S, having recently played Jack Point, and so complete with a Judge’s costume made by my grandmother, I put them through their paces. Like so many people discovering G & S for the first time, some of the members expressed a desire to continue with productions and so the new society was formed. I was asked to become its first Musical Director. When a decision was made to transfer the annual production to the then Derby Playhouse it changed its name to Derby Gilbert & Sullivan Company.
Our second home Buxton Opera House has always been a second home to the company and it’s in that house that Derby first attended the 3rd International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival, with a production of The Mikado, and also achieved the record of being crowned six times as International Champions. The company also had considerable success in the Waterford International Festival of Light Opera. Apart from the UK and Ireland, we have travelled to Seattle, Lanzarote and Vancouver Island to present our shows. Quality in performance has always been the company’s aim and for many years it had a principal line-up probably second to none in amateur circles, backed by a strong chorus. The company members’ average age has increased considerably, and as time marches on we have elected to take a final bow, whilst hopefully still producing a quality product. It therefore is fitting that the show is The Mikado and that our last performance is in Buxton Opera House. We are delighted that many friends of the company will either be on stage, helping backstage, or in the audience, and I’m delighted that David Parkins, who designed Utopia Limited for the G & S Opera Company, has generously agreed to design the set and costumes for our last show. Many of you know that my sister Judith, who started all of this with her chance remark so many decades ago, died on May 6th. I know she will be looking on at the company, which meant such a great deal to her and we all would like to make her proud. This is for her.

Celebrating our silver jubilee year
HARROGATE The 25th International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival is celebrating its Silver Jubilee this year and returns to Harrogate’s magnificent Royal Hall, 8-27 August promising fantastic entertainment for all the family.
This unique Festival features around 100 performances and fringe activities all staged within the Royal Hall or the nearby Harrogate Theatre. And immediately adjacent to the Royal Hall is the specially-themed Utopia Pavilion, an exciting meeting place for Festival visitors with café, bar and information desk. It also features film shows, lunchtime entertainment and the late-night Festival club. No wonder people travel from all around the world to join in the fun! A major highlight of this year’s Festival will be the sixteen performances of the critically acclaimed professional National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company with five brand-new productions of all-time favourites: Iolanthe, The Pirates of Penzance, Ruddigore, The Sorcerer and Trial by Jury. The Company will also present the first professional production of the rarely performed Sullivan and Grundy operetta, “Haddon Hall” on 17 August. Its last professional presentation was way back in 1892. A four-day event “The Magic of Gilbert & Sullivan” (17-20 August) will bring speakers from 10 countries to talk about the life and times of Gilbert & Sullivan and take a fascinating look at Victorian theatre, costumes and set design. With more than 2000 people taking part onstage, backstage or front of house, this year's festival promises to be the most exciting to date. Imagine a 92-year-old New Zealander who left Britain 50 years ago is flying back to England specially to perform in the Bus Pass Opera production of the Yeomen of the Guard. Don't miss the Jewish Cantor who is also an opera singer coming to Harrogate with a special Friday evening Sabbath celebration sung exclusively to Sullivan music.

SULLIVAN’S OVERTURES Festival director Ian Smith just loves the Sullivan overtures. An augmented National Festival Orchestra promises an afternoon to remember on Friday August 17th performing all the overtures from the stage of the Royal Hall under the baton of one of Britain's most promising conductors, James Hendry who the following month will be conducting for English National Opera in London's Coliseum. Dr David Russel Hulme will be your host.
DIRECTORS Cav. Vivian Coates is back with choreographer Mary MacDonagh with two brand-new productions – and brand-new looks at Iolanthe and Ruddigore. Richard Gauntlett directs for the first time the National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company and you can be sure his Pirates of Penzance will be a happy laugh a minute production; fresh from his triumph with Opera North John Savournin is back with The Sorcerer which he sets against the background of village life of a hugely popular TV series; and Ian Smith promises a no gimmick Trial by Jury highlighting the ability of the enormously talented opera company.
winning film shows You will be able to see highlights from the previous 25 festivals with many of the "winning" productions playing in our special film studio; we will have our usual lunchtime entertainment and our nightly Festival club.
WE’RE HAVING AN AUCTION Last year we had a grand draw. This year we are having an auction at 6.30pm on Saturday, August 18 – the same day as our memorabilia fair. It has come about as a result of the generosity of one of our "friends" whose husband had sadly passed away. She wanted to help the festival and donated his entire collection of books and other memorabilia. We hope that other" friends" might like to follow this example and donate items that can be auctioned in August. And they do not have to be Gilbert and Sullivan related items. If you have something you would like to contribute to help fund the festival please email: oliver@gsfestivals.org We will be streaming the auction live online and if you can’t attend in person please email oliver@gsfestivals.org for more information. free shuttle service You can see from the programme that the majority of our matinee performances are in the 500 seat Harrogate Theatre. Unlike the Savoy which we have built ourselves in recent years we decided our Silver Jubilee deserved the ambiance of the 500 seat theatre for its matinee performances. We just hope that you will support some of the wonderful shows to be presented here. We are offering a free shuttle service from in front of the Royal Hall to the side of the Harrogate Theatre for every afternoon performance – and a return following the performance back to the Royal Hall. But you have to book your seat at least one day in advance. You can book by calling the office – (01422) 323252 or you can book at the information desk in the Utopia Pavilion the day before.
Making their debuts We are delighted to welcome a number of groups who are making their debuts at this year's festival. Forbear Theatre a professional group from London stepped into the breach when one of the companies had to withdraw. They will be bringing a very exciting Iolanthe to Harrogate on Thursday, August 9. Then on Monday, August 20 we welcome for the first time Winchester Operatic Society with what promises to be a highly colourful production of Utopia Limited. In the Harrogate Theatre Opera North Youth Group make their debut with an abridged "Pirates of Penzance”on Friday August 10th. We have a tribute from a number of well-known American personalities to World War I as they "keep the home fires burning!" That is on Friday, August 17. Taverners Theatre from Hull make their debut with a production of "Ages Ago." That is in the Utopia theatre on Saturday, August 25 and the following day Ronald Orenstein from Canada presents a special reading of his play “The Learned Judgement.”

Our visit coincides with Richmond’s annual Georgian Festival and we are delighted our own G&S Festival will be “starring” in the town’s famous theatre. The Georgian Theatre Royal is a theatre and historic Georgian playhouse. It is among the oldest of Britain's extant theatres. Your visit includes a ticket for a special matinee concert presented by festival favourites Nick Sales and Sarah Helsby Hughes. The coach returns in time for dinner and a great evening performance. At some of last year's performances our home-built Savoy theatre was "sold out" and it was quite clear that we would either have to hire a bigger bleacher seat facility or move this important aspect of the Festival elsewhere. The Harrogate Theatre provides the ideal solution. We are of course conscious that this is a short walk from the Royal Hall complex and we plan to run a free shuttle service for anyone with walking difficulties (see page 11).
WHERE IS IT? Harrogate Theatre is located on Oxford Street in central Harrogate and has two performance spaces (a main auditorium that seats 500 and a studio space that seats 60), which allow for producing and presenting theatre, dance, music and comedy. The Theatre has undergone considerable artistic development in the past 10 years that has seen the organisation establish itself as a significant influence in the region, with a growing national profile.
We are looking forward to a happy return. ROYAL HALL

OPERA COMPANY TO STAGE SIX BRAND NEW PRODUCTIONS Our Silver Jubilee year just had to be "extra special" for our National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company – and it will be. We have six brand-new productions that you can enjoy in Harrogate – five of them can be seen in Buxton. The award winning combination of Cav Vivian Coates (Director)
and Mary MacDonagh (Choreographer) return with new productions of Ruddigore and Iolanthe. Following their enormous success last year with Princess Ida and The Pirates of Penzance these are definitely two shows that will be worth seeing.
Richard Gauntlett who has delighted audiences with his portrayal of many of the patter roles returns as the Major General, the Lord Chancellor, the Judge and John Wellington Wells. But next year he will also have a new role. He will direct the Opera Company in his own production of The Pirates of Penzance. Bearing in mind Richard's vast knowledge and experience of the operas and in particular the comedy that he

brings to his various characters, we can be sure of a laugh-a-minute innovative production in the Royal Hall. Other commitments meant that John Savournin had to take a year off in 2017 but he is back this year with a new production of The Sorcerer. This will be part of a "double bill" and Festival Director, Ian Smith will take charge of what he describes as a totally "traditional" but hopefully equally as enjoyable Trial by Jury. And last but by no means least is the pro/am production of Haddon Hall which will be presented in both Buxton and Harrogate. Sarah Helsby Hughes who directs Heritage Opera has accepted the challenge of this Sullivan/Grundy piece with beautiful music and a romantic story that is centred around Haddon Hall, England's most romantic and unspoiled mediaeval Tudor home with more than 800 years of history to absorb. After two weeks of chorus auditions in London and Manchester, Festival Director Ian Smith believes this year’s G&S Opera Company will have the strongest chorus we have ever had. "We are delighted at the close relationship which we are developing with the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester," he said. "For 2018 we have brought in eight of their outstanding musicians. We are very excited."

Opera Company stars
The National Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company was created 25 years ago to headline our annual International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival. It has gone from strength to strength receiving outstanding reviews from the national press including five stars awarded by the Daily Mail for last year’s fantastic Princess Ida. Our Silver Jubilee 2018 season offers our most ambitious programme to date with six brand-new productions including all-time favourite “The Pirates of Penzance” along with the first professional production of “Haddon Hall” to be performed since 1892. There really is “something for everyone”. Iolanthe, Ruddigore, The Sorcerer and Trial by Jury complete this year’s programme. The Opera Company is completely self-sufficient and does not receive a penny of public funding. There are not many other opera companies of a similar stature who can say that today! All our performances are accompanied by the National Festival Orchestra who have also been with us since our very first show back in 1994. Box Office: www.gsfestivals.org

Opera Company stars Today the Opera Company continues to headline the festival but its quality has been recognised by many other major UK theatres and it will tour to many of them this autumn. We look forward to seeing you at one of our venues this year. You can be sure of a fun-filled evening with simply the very best entertainment.

Did you know that the first children's productions of Gilbert and Sullivan were in the United States and that the very popular author Louisa May Alcott (Little Women) wrote a book about "Jimmy’s Cruise in the Pinafore?” This is just one of more than 30 presentations from speakers from around the world who will participate in a four-day " Magic of Gilbert and Sullivan" event at this year's 25th Silver Jubilee Anniversary festival in Harrogate Friday, August 17 through to Monday, August 20. "We really have put together one of the most fascinating programmes ever presented which takes a close look at the life and times of Gilbert and Sullivan in Victorian England," says Ian Smith artistic director of the festival “We have developed the programme in such a manner that you can attend any half day, full day or the entire event for a very nominal registration fee” he added. Speakers are travelling from as far afield as Australia, the United States, Russia, Croatia, Germany and Switzerland to present a peep behind the curtain and into the lives of England's most famous theatrical partnership – as popular today as ever before. And the programme is not purely spoken presentations. On Friday afternoon August 17 in the Royal Hall, one of the world's greatest experts on the Sullivan overtures, Dr David Russell Hulme will set the scene for one of Britain's most exciting new conductors, James Hendry, to conduct the full National Festival Orchestra who will play all thirteen overtures. Speakers pose a wide range of questions. Can Gilbert and Sullivan only survive with gimmicks? We will be examining Gilbert's unique place in history as the man who developed theatre stage management as we know it today; his view on young women marrying older men; and Sullivan and his relationship with women.

We will hear how Sullivan changed the lives of residents in a small town in Switzerland; the conspiracy to sack him from the famous Leeds musical Festival. How good a pianist was he? The programme on Friday, Saturday morning and Monday is in the nearby Crown Hotel. On Sunday afternoon the session is in the Utopia Theatre. You can register for any half-day session on Friday Saturday and Sunday at £25 per session; or £50 per day including lunch; £125 for the entire programme. Monday, August 20 is a more academic day and the registration fee is £50 including lunch. It is anticipated that a book of the presentations will be published in time for Christmas.

This meant we had to make up the difference from other sources primarily from increasing the membership of our Friends of the Gilbert and Sullivan Charilty which, over the years, has contributed more than £250,000 to support various youth initiatives.
We rely on the generosity of our friends and supporters to sustain the Festival and our work throughout the year. Eighty five per cent of our income comes from ticket sales. Whilst this is an amazing achievement it also poses a significant risk. Four years ago our move to Harrogate saw our ticket sales drop. This was not a suprise but it highlighted the fact that we were beginning afresh

RHINE
November 15 - 22 2018
Join our Theatrical Adventures Sing Salon "Voyage of Musical Discovery.” We are sailing up the River Rhine, 15-22 November . It is a journey specially developed for fans of opera, operetta , musical theatre – and for people who want to sing. This eight day, seven night cruise starts and finishes in Amsterdam – easily reached by Eurostar train from any part of the UK or by plane from most airports. Our holiday home is the outstanding premium class "Elegant Lady.” Its 64 staterooms overlook the river, located on the main and upper decks. This is our own exclusive vessel. It is a holiday of discovery – Amsterdam, Koblenz, the amazing Rhine Gorge, Speyer, Strasbourg, and back via Mainz, Heidleberg,
and Cologne. And when we are not exploring there is plenty of time to relax – or sing – or listen. The sightseeing is spectacular and so too the culinary delights that await. A special treat on this adventure is international soprano Rachel Harland’s “Sing Salon.” It’s great fun. It offers something for everyone – the singer, the beginner and those who think they can’t sing. They are for anyone at ANY AGE! Remember. Anyone can sing. Come and see for yourself. We’ll be singing classic pop, jazz, songs from the musicals and G&S. Learn about two and four part harmony and be the “stars” of a gala concert after our final Gala Dinner. The Mikado WWOS
ROYAL HALL 7:30PM TICKETS £20 - £30
WWOS was founded in 1935 as West Wickham Operatic Society and productions were mounted initially at halls in nearby Beckenham and West Wickham. Productions were transferred to a larger hall in the mid-1960s and the repertoire broadened from predominately G&S/English musical comedy to include operettas by Offenbach, Strauss and Lehar. In 1978 Bromley opened its new state of the art 750-seat Churchill Theatre into which the company moved and the repertoire further broadened to include modern musicals. During the Queen’s Golden Jubilee week a production of Pickwick was taken to the magical open air Minack Theatre on the cliffs at Porthcurno in Cornwall. This is WWOS’s sixth appearance at the International Gilbert & Sullivan Festival where it was International Champion in 2014 and a runner up in 2013 and 2015.

IOLANTHE FORBEAR! THEATRE
ROYAL HALL 7:30PM TICKETS £20 - £30
Forbear! Theatre is a professional company that has been producing G&S since 2015. We treat the operas like ordinary plays and use the text and the music to inform our movement. We typically do things on a budget; in January of this year we put on The Grand Duke in a small theatre with a cast of 8 in London, which was very successful. For Iolanthe, our aim is to make such a piece that brings out the music and the words in a way that the audience may be haven’t seen before; our movement highlights the music and our actors really understand the text. We are an ensemble company, so both the chorus and Principals are featured throughout this production, and you may see certain members of the cast appearing in different guises at various points during the show!

pirates revisited OPERA NORTH YOUTH company Harrogate Theatre £15.00
The Opera North Youth Company is proud to present an adaptation of Gilbert and Sullivan’s popular and much-loved Pirates of Penzance. The story starts in an attic where a group of children are excited to find an old book among all the boxes. As they start to read, they are transported to a world of piracy full of intrigue, misunderstanding, comedy and love. Come and see the next generation of G&S performers. It is sure to be a delight! Every summer, the Opera North Youth company gives young talented singers and musicians aged 14 to 19 from around the region the opportunity to work with professional directors to stage a show. This year, they are excited to premiere a new adaptation of ‘Pirates of Penzance’ by John Savournin directed by Emma Black. Both John and Emma are G&S specialists and worked on the Opera North mainstage production of ‘Trial by Jury’ last Autumn. What an amazing opportunity for young people to work with them and to perform at the Festival. We are all so very excited to perform in Harrogate’s immensely beautiful theatre, and cannot wait to see other productions around the same time as our own performance. The national gilbert & Sullivan opera company TICKETS £25 - £42.50 There is no doubt that the critics choice for best show at last year's Festival went to the National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company and its production of "Princess Ida." It certainly had the "wow" factor and we are delighted that the same production team of Vivian Coates and Mary MacDonagh are returning with a brand-new look at Ruddigore. The opera is a parody of the stock melodrama — the villain who carries off the maiden; poor-but-virtuousheroine; the hero in disguise, and his faithful old retainer who dreams of their former glory days; ghosts coming to life to enforce a curse.

10:30am LOVE, LOOKS AND LAUGHTER AS G&S TAKE ON AGEING utopia theatre £7.50 The next time an actor complains that there are no roles for older performers, refer them to G&S. In this unique review of the Canon as it treats men and women of a certain age, you’ll get insights on how the Victorians viewed ageing, Gilbert’s portrayal of the fierce older woman who unaccountably gets the man, and the older man as formidable and wise. But, G&S also displays a fair mix of the pain of physical decline, ridicule and uselessness of the old by the young, and the pathos of love in old age. You will see videos of some of the most beautiful and comical songs to illustrate the enduring issues of ageing as presented by G&S. Adriane Berg is an Emmy Award winning broadcaster and host of the radio show Generation Bold, The Fountain of Truth About Ageing. She has been fascinated by the treatment of ageing by Gilbert from the Babs cartoons to Thespis to the Grand Duke, as well as Sullivan’s depth in portraying ageing in musical themes.

ROYAL HALL 7:30PM
opera company TICKETS £25 - £42.50
The National G&S Opera Company presents the authors' first 'feature length' operetta, The Sorcerer. John Savournin (who recently directed Trial by Jury for Opera North) sets this brand new production in Ploverleigh's village hall, where the somewhat eccentric local community is preparing to celebrate the union of the Alexis and Aline. Alexis, hellbent on spreading love throughout the village, employs the assistance of a family Sorcerer (come-travelling-salesman) to distribute his "Patent, Oxy Hydrogen Love-at-first-sight" potion to each and every member of this happy little community, by putting it in their tea... As things don't go to plan, this has far reaching consequences that are by turn uproariously hilarious and fantastically farcical. A traditional “Trial by Jury” from festival Director Ian Smith completes what promises to be a memorable evening.

It has been described as a very friendly cult. We are very excited to be bringing Iolanthe to Harrogate. We love everything about Iolanthe, and our hilarious high-energy production makes the most of the opera as it is written: the words are witty, the tunes are catchy, the plot is, frankly, ridiculous, and the political satire needs no updating! We have really enjoyed putting the show together and we hope you will enjoy it even more!

IOLANTHE Savoy company usa
ROYAL HALL 7:30PM TICKETS £20 - £30
Iolanthe is a story about the adventures and trials of fairies and peers – a “fairy tale”. Among its many exceptionally witty and delightful lyrics, one of our favourites is sung by the Lord Chancellor during the Act 1 finale – “it seems that she’s a fairy, from Andersen’s library.” That lyric suggests that the entire story could easily be a fairy tale written by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen (rather than, as we know, by W.S. Gilbert). With that simple premise, our “storytellers” help us to appreciate Iolanthe as a fairy tale by weaving into our production references to six Andersen fairy tales (“The Little Mermaid”, “Five Peas From a Pod”, “The Brave Tin Soldier”, “The Red Shoes”, “The Old Bachelor’s Nightcap”, and “Clumsy Hans” - and one additional fairy tale (“The Fox and the Hound”), for good measure. Join us as we sweep you away into our magical world of fairy tales!

LOpSoc, the University of Southampton Light Opera Society, proudly present their first ever production of Patience to the 25th Gilbert and Sullivan Festival. They are looking forward to presenting their unique take on Patience, which has updated the parody of the aesthetic movement, fad culture, and the superficiality, hypocrisy and pretentiousness of such movements to a bustling London street in the early 2000s. Aestheticism is replaced with hipster fashion to bring this comedic ‘coming of age’ story into the 21st Century, presenting a modern take on the otherwise unchanged score and libretto. A group of trendy young ladies in London, rapturously caught up in the hipster fashion, are in love with two promising rival poets. But the poets have no interest in the ladies, as they are both fighting for the love of Patience, a simple barista. Patience believes that true love must be completely unselfish - it must wither and sting and burn! Meanwhile, the boisterous players of "The Dragoons", the local rugby team, are broken-hearted as the ladies have eyes only for the hipster poets. Even though they don't see the point to fashion, the team decides to give it a try in order to win the ladies' hearts.

Thom King has served as Cantor of Beth El Congregation, the largest Conservative synagogue in Maryland, USA, for over 20 years. His interest in G&S began when he first heard recordings of the operas at the age of 16; Since then, while pursuing an operatic career, he has portrayed Pooh-Bah, The Mikado, the Usher, J.W. Wells, Captain Corcoran, and Colonel Calverley with various professional American companies, as well as directing several G&S productions. According to Cantor King, “the timeless works of Gilbert & Sullivan transcend the boundaries of culture, race, and religion. In that spirit, I have created a 30-minute service to welcome the Jewish Sabbath, utilizing traditional Hebrew texts set to melodies from the G&S canon. It will be a fun, uplifting, and participatory half-hour which you don’t have to be Jewish to enjoy!”

This is the third visit for the Newcastle University Gilbert and Sullivan Society to the Festival. The Society is one of the oldest societies at the University, established in 1952. We performed The Pirates of Penzance in February at the Royal Grammar School in Newcastle. This was a difficult production for us as unfortunately our director, Trevor W. Harder, passed away during the rehearsal period. However we all teamed together to put on a successful show and are looking forward to Harrogate where we can once again perform this show in Trevor’s memory. Trevor was a huge lover of Gilbert and Sullivan and was hoping to perform at the Festival this year so we hope we can make him proud of our performance. We have all thoroughly enjoyed performing The Pirates of Penzance this year with its fun characters and exciting plot. The performance will be a traditional version of Pirates with a few updates and we look forward to performing in the Harrogate Theatre.

patience The New London Opera Group ROYAL HALL 7:30PM
TICKETS £20 - £30 The New London Opera Group (affectionately known as “New Log”) was founded in 2003 by members of the disbanded University of London Opera Group who sought to preserve the ethos and energy of that company, whilst expanding the membership base and repertoire. In London, the company is based at the beautiful Edwardian Gothic church of Holy Trinity, South Kensington, where they rehearse and give an annual Autumn concert. However, they also have a very happy second home at the Riverhead Theatre in Louth, Lincolnshire. Every year since 2003, the New London Opera Group has performed a fully staged G&S production in Louth. Although G&S forms the backbone of the group’s repertoire, they are not afraid to explore other sections of the British operatic repertoire. The New London Opera Group made its International G&S Festival debut in 2013, with a much-praised wartime production of The Sorcerer. They returned in 2015 with a spectacular staging of Utopia Limited and in 2017 were second runners-up with a production of The Yeomen of the Guard, set in the Cavalier era of the 1630s. They are delighted to return for this very special silver jubilee festival!

Harrogate Theatre £15.00
This year King’s College London Gilbert and Sullivan Society present a double-bill that promises to provide new interpretations of two well loved classics; HMS Pinafore and Trial by Jury. Be transported to the deck of a 1920s ship an into a courtroom filled with puppets. King’s College London Gilbert and Sullivan Society, now in its 31st year, demonstrate how a production does not need to be entirely traditional to offer entertainment and enjoyment for everyone through the wonderful material Gilbert and Sullivan provide. Set in the 1920s, HMS Pinafore will provide laughter, flappers, Charleston, class and character. Trial by Jury will be traditional in almost every sense. Combining the traditional setting, characterisation and text with modern influences including The Muppets and Avenue Q, King’s will be presenting Trial by Puppets! Expect comedy, fun and a trial like you’ve never seen before and judge for yourself whether puppets could be the future.

RUDDIGORE
ROYAL HALL 7:30PM
The national gilbert & Sullivan opera company TICKETS £25- £42.50 There is no doubt that the critics choice for best show at last year's Festival went to the National Gilbert and Sullivan Opera Company and its production of "Princess Ida." It certainly had the "wow" factor and we are delighted that the same production team of Vivian Coates and Mary MacDonagh are returning with a brand-new look at Ruddigore. The opera is a parody of the stock melodrama — the villain who carries off the maiden; poor-but-virtuous-heroine; the hero in disguise, and his faithful old retainer who dreams of their former glory days; ghosts coming to life to enforce a curse.

Princess IDA Grosvenor Light Opera Company Harrogate Theatre £15.00
The Grosvenor Light Opera Company will be bringing an exciting non traditional interpretation of "Princess Ida" to Harrogate this Summer. Director Tony Baker has chosen to avoid the usual pseudo medieval settings and costumes and to bring a different visual angle to the piece, whilst still keeping all of Gilbert's dialogue and Sullivan's music intact. The production uses the premise of a boys’’ school and a girls’ school coming together to present a performance of "Princess Ida" within a 1930's classroom setting. Masters and pupils both taking part in the show. GLOC is a leading London G&S Society with a long history - over 70 performances of G&S since its debut in 1949! As one of the only amateur operatic societies both to rehearse and perform in Central London, we attract a membership largely of young professionals who work in the centre of town, together with students attending the city’s universities and colleges.

HMS PINAFORE CHARLES COURT OPERA
ROYAL HALL 7:30PM
TICKETS £25- £44 CCO are delighted to be presenting a fresh, witty take on HMS Pinafore, one of the earliest enduring successes of Gilbert and Sullivan’s famous collaboration which remains a firm favourite with audiences. All aboard a Royal Naval submarine, it contains some of Sullivan’s sunniest music and tells the story of Josephine the Captain’s daughter and her love for a lowly sailor Ralph Rackstraw, despite being promised in marriage to the First Lord of the Admiralty, Sir Joseph Porter. Gilbert uses the strictly hierarchical society of life to satirise the rigidity of the British Class system. This brand new production promises an evening of rollicking choruses, and tender tunes imbued with the unique wit and infectious energy of a CCO production to be enjoyed by all ages.
