WELCOME Dear Girl Scout volunteers, In 2012, Girl Scouts of the USA celebrated 100 years of blazing trails, raising the bar, and developing leaders. It is because of people like you that our next generation of girls will be more confident in who they are, engage in healthier relationships, and be empowered to make a difference. Your time and commitment to girls are gifts that we value and appreciate—and we hope that you feel gifted in return by the many moments of discovery, connection, and taking action that girls will have under your caring guidance. We know that today’s girls and adults are busy people! We hope that this magazine, along with your Volunteer Resources CD (available at new leader orientation and at fall service unit meetings), will help you plan and administer a positive, productive, and safe Girl Scout Leadership Experience for girls. The Volunteer Cheat Sheets section of this magazine offers some great, quick resources for you to use throughout the year. We’ve also included some “bright ideas” throughout the magazine; keep an eye out for the symbol. Keep in touch with us, and let us know about the amazing things you are doing with your girls this year! moving forward... What does strategic learning mean for you? Throughout late fall 2010 and early 2011, Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland engaged in an extensive strategic learning process. Board members, staff, and volunteers throughout our jurisdiction came together to lead the council in learning about its competitors, customers, stakeholders, sector trends, and internal realities. Here are just a few of the realities that were realized in this process:

• 90% of girl experience takes place at the troop level. • GSMH does not have the processes in place to effectively train volunteers on the National Program Portfolio or measure the extent to which girl-led leadership development experiences are being facilitated. • Program emphasis is not at the troop level where most girls are engaged.

As realities like these rose to the forefront, we quickly realized that significant shifts were required—in terms of our focus as a council, our staffing structures, and our training and program delivery. In this issue of the Volunteer 411, you see the beginning stages of these changes. For example, there are fewer council program events being offered this year—a change intended to allow us to allocate more resources at the local level. National program portfolio The Girl Scout National Program Portfolio ensures that all girls receive the same positive benefits and outcomes in Girl Scouting, but still offers the flexibility for girls to make their experience their own. The projects, badge activities, and community service that girls do will vary according to their interests—but every single Girl Scout in the country will emerge a stronger leader.

The Core: Leadership Journeys Girls learn the Three Keys to Leadership (Discover, Connect, and Take Action) through the Girl Scout journeys. By guiding the girls through age-appropriate activities, discussions, and service projects, journeys engage girls in the process of leadership— helping them discover, connect, and take action in tangible ways. Each journey has a How-To Guide for Adults that offers advice and guidance to volunteers as they mentor girls through this exciting part of the National Program Portfolio.

Skill-Building & Traditions: The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting

The newest part of the National Program Portfolio, The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting is a binder that includes an age-level handbook, a badge requirement section, and room to grow! There is no volunteer-specific version of these binders, but we encourage troop volunteers to have their own copy of the book, so that they can mentor and advise girls through their activities. The Girl’s Guides for Girl Scout Brownies through Ambassadors includes 12-14 skill-building badges in three categories (legacy, financial literacy, and cookie business) per age level. Girl Scout Daisies may earn 10 petals and a Promise center, plus four leaves. Three Badge Activity Sets are also available for each age level, complementing each of the three Girl Scout Journeys and offering five additional badges per set.

Leadership

The Girl’s Guide and the Girl Scout journeys work together by combining skillbuilding activities with leadership development activities. The badges in the Girl’s Guide build specific skills, and are primarily aimed at the “Girls develop a strong sense of self” outcome; they also help ensure that girls experience important Girl Scout traditions as well as a sense of self-sufficiency. The Girl Scout journeys cover all fifteen national outcomes, which help ensure the long-term outcome of Girl Scouting: that Girls lead with courage, confidence, and character, to make the world a better place.

Juliette Gordon Low’s Birthday (Founder’s Day) Celebrate the birth of Girl Scouts of the USA founder Juliette Low with a birthday party or special service project. Read about her interesting life and why she started Girl Scouting in the United States; The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting and the Girl Scout journeys are good resources for this. Bright idea: Juliette Low sold a strand of valuable pearls to help fund the Girl Scout Movement. Why not honor her sacrifice on Founder’s Day by making a donation to Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland or the Juliette Low World Friendship Fund?

World Thinking Day Girl Scouts of the USA is part of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS), which spans 145 countries. World Thinking Day celebrates the sisterhood between Girl Guides and Girl Scouts around the globe. Every year, a global action theme unites WAGGGS members in service; for 2013, it is “Together we can save children’s lives and every mother’s life and health is precious.” All Girl Scouts are encouraged to celebrate world cultures and give service on World Thinking Day. Why not learn a song or dance from another country? Or invite someone you know who is from or has traveled to another country, so girls can learn more about our global community?

Girl Scout Week Always including March 12 (Girl Scout Birthday), Girl Scout Week begins with Girl Scout Sunday and ends with Girl Scout Sabbath. Girl Scout Sunday and Girl Scout Sabbath give girls an opportunity to attend their place of worship and be recognized as Girl Scouts. Girls may want to perform a service such as greeting, ushering, or doing a flag ceremony. This day can also be a time when girls explore other faiths if they wish - or just enjoy nature together! March 12 is Girl Scout Birthday, marking the day in 1912 that our founder held the first meeting for Girl Scouts in the United States.

Bright idea: Help children and families in need by putting together “birthday bags” for food shelves, family shelters, or other organizations. Bags could include cake mix, frosting, paper plates, party hats, balloons, and a small gift. See page 19 for details.

Girl Scout Leader’s Day Girl Scout Leader’s Day honors all the volunteers who work as leaders and mentors in partnership with girls. Girls, their families, and communities should find a special way to thank their adult Girl Scout volunteers. Keep an eye out in the mail for a special “thank you” from Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland.

What’s That Mean? We’ve got a lot of lingo in Girl Scouts! Here’s a cheat sheet for some of the most common terms and abbreviations used in Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland. GSLE—Girl Scout Leadership Experience. A combination of activities, discussions, projects, and experiences that engages and empowers girls to discover, connect, and take action. GSMH—Abbreviation for “Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland.” SWAPs—Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere or Share With a Pal. Often made and traded between Girl Scouts at events. Generally follow the event theme or representing the maker’s interests. Tagalong—A non-registered child attending a Girl Scout event. For insurance purposes and to ensure that girls receive the best possible service and experience, these are generally not permitted at GSMH program events.

LLS— Leadership and Learning Specialist. New titles for GSMH staff in summer 2012, each of our three geographic regions has one LLS-GSLE, who facilities program events and advises the different Girl Scout pathways, and one LLS-Volunteerism, who coordinates volunteer trainings and support. We also have one LLS-Outdoor Programs who oversees our summer and day camp programs. MMS—Membership Marketing Specialist. Responsible for marketing the Girl Scout Leadership Experience locally, this person is also a primary staff contact for troop volunteers. Region—Three geographic areas within GSMH—southwest (Springfield/Joplin areas, KS, OK), central (Jefferson City area), and southeast (Dexter/Cape Girardeau areas). STM— Service Team Manager. An adult volunteer who supports a service unit (see below). SU— Service Unit. Geographic area—usually by county—of Girl Scout troops and members.

girl scout awards In addition to the leadership awards from the Girl Scout journeys, girls at all age levels can earn specialized awards. Details about most awards are in The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting for each age level; you can also find information online at www.girlscouts.org.

All Ages Journey Summit Awards: When girls complete all three Journeys for their age level, they earn this special pin. My Promise, My Faith Awards: Girl Scouts may earn a My Promise, My Faith Award for each year of Girl Scouting. Be sure to check out The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting for details! Safety Awards: The updated Safety Award Pin is earned by following a three to five step process for staying safe, tailored to each Girl Scout age level. The color of the cross on the pin corresponds to the Girl Scout age level color.

For Girl Scout Juniors Junior Aide: Girl Scout Juniors who wish to work with a younger troop may earn the Junior Aide Award. Girl Scout Bronze Award: This is the highest award that a Girl Scout Junior can earn. It is designed to be earned as a group (a Girl Scout troop or a group of girls who are interested in the same topic). To earn this award, you must complete a Girl Scout Junior journey and then work on a project with a suggested minimum of 20 hours. Information about this award is available at www.girlscouts.org or by contacting a GSMH Leadership & Learning Specialist.

For Girl Scout Cadettes Girl Scout Silver Award: This is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn, either as part of a team or individually. To earn this award, you must complete a Girl Scout Cadette journey and a project with a suggested minimum of 50 hours. Information on this award is available at www.girlscouts.org or by contacting a GSMH Leadership & Learning Specialist. Cadette Program Aide Award: If girls earn one Leader in Action award from the Girl Scout journeys, complete council’s program aide course training, and work directly with younger girls, they can earn this award.

For Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors & Ambassadors Service to Girl Scouting Bar: A different colored bar can be earned by Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors who volunteer at least 20 hours to the Girl Scout organization. It can be at a special event for younger girls, as an office assistant for the council or service unit, or helping with special projects. Community Service Bar: This is earned by making a difference in the community and practicing the values of the Girl Scout Law. It is also a way for girls to get involved with a cause they care about. Torch Awards: Earned by Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors who act as leaders in their community, this award requires completion of a journey and service in a leadership position at a school, place of worship, library, or similar organization.

For Girl Scout Seniors & Ambassadors Volunteer-in-Training: A Volunteer-in-Training (VIT) completes a group leadership course and works as a mentor with a younger troop outside of the camp pathway. Counselor in Training I and II Awards: These are earned by Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors who mentor young girls in a camp setting as they build skills toward becoming a camp counselor. To earn this award, Girl Scouts complete a leadership course designed by the council on outdoor experiences and work with younger girls over the course of a camp session. Girl Scout Gold Award: This is the highest award a Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador can earn. To earn it, you must complete two Girl Scout Senior and Ambassador Journeys OR the Girl Scout Silver Award and one journey, as well as a final project. Your project, which has a suggested minimum of 80 hours, must be approved by the council before you begin. You must turn in a completed Final Report by April 1 to be included in that yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Young Women of Distinction event. Bright Idea: Fewer than 5% of Girl Scouts earn the Girl Scout Gold Award, which opens up the doors to exclusive opportunities like automatic military or job interview advancement, college scholarships, insurance discounts, and more. Encourage your girls to talk to a GSMH leadership & learning specialist about finding a project that fits their passion!

Ceremonies & events Ceremonies

Ceremonies are a long-held tradition in Girl Scouts, and a great way to commemorate important moments in a Girl Scout’s career. All ceremonies have three basic parts: • Opening: welcome guests, state the purpose, and set the mood. • Main Part: develop the theme or idea of the ceremony with dialogue, poetry, songs, candle-lighting, or other activities. • Closing: thank guests, say good-bye, and offer closure through a friendship circle, song, or other activity. Investiture/Rededication An investiture ceremony is planned to welcome new girls and adults when they join Girl Scouts for the first time. Traditions often used at this ceremony include the Girl Scout Promise and Law, singing, presenting the Girl Scout membership pin, and doing the Girl Scout handshake. Rededication is a very similar ceremony, except it is for girls and adults who have been invested to reaffirm their belief in the Girl Scout Promise and Law. To take the guesswork out of these ceremonies, Investiture/Rededication Kits are available for checkout at all GSMH retail shops. Bridging Ceremony Bridging ceremonies represent a girl’s growth and development from one level of Girl Scouts to another. The “bridge” or crossing over into the new program level can be symbolized in different ways - indoors or in an outdoor setting, perhaps at a local park with a wooden bridge (a portable bridge is available for checkout at the Springfield and Joplin retail shops). Consider inviting a sister troop at the next Girl Scout age level to assist. Ideas for bridging ceremonies can be found in The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting. Bright idea: Visit www.girlscoutsmoheartland.org to download FREE resources, such as Cookie Program certificates, event flyer templates, program covers for your ceremonies, and more! Flag Ceremony A flag ceremony is a great way of showing love, pride, and respect for one’s country or state. They are often used to open other ceremonies and can also be a nice way to begin troop meetings or other Girl Scout events. The Pledge of Allegiance in the presence of the flag is always included in this ceremony; reciting the Girl Scout Promise and Law or singing a patriotic or Girl Scout song may also be included. Flag ceremonies often use a color guard, a guard of honor for the flag. They consist of one color bearer and two or more guards on each side who ensure that the flag does not touch the ground or become entangled. Materials for flag ceremonies are available for check out at all GSMH retail shops. A kit with information about color guard positions, responsibilities, scripts, instruction on flag folding and proper etiquette, history, and sample flag ceremonies is available for checkout at all GSMH retail shops. Other Ceremonies Additional ceremonies that your troop may choose to do include: • Opening/Closing Ceremonies (at meetings or events) • Pinning Ceremony (for grade-level Girl Scout pins) • Court of Awards (to celebrate achievement) • Fly-Up (for girls bridging from Brownies to Juniors) • Girl Scouts’ Own (for exploration of the girls’ choosing) For more information on these and other ceremonies, visit www.girlscouts.org/program/gs_central/ceremonies/.

Event Planning Check List A Note on Insurance...

Request for Certificate of Liability Insurance Many times the locations where troops and service units meet or hold activities will require a certificate of insurance before agreeing to let them use their facility. If your meeting or event location needs proof of insurance, please complete a Request for Certificate of Liability Insurance form (available on your Volunteer Resources CD and our website). Forms should be submitted to the GSMH human resources department at least two weeks before the facility is needed. Once requested, a copy of our certificate of liability insurance will be faxed, emailed or mailed directly to the site that needs it. Girl Scout Activity Accident Insurance and Optional Plans and Claims Registered Girl Scouts are covered by a secondary accident insurance while participating in approved Girl Scout activities. (All Girls in grades K–12 should be registered as Girl Scout members.) Sometimes, a troop or service unit must take out extended insurance for members or non-members. Some instances in which troops or service units should purchase this low-cost insurance include: • non-members attending a Girl Scout event (Plan 2) • registered members participating in an event or activity lasting more than two consecutive nights (Plan 2); members and non-members accident and sickness for events lasting longer than two consecutive nights • members and non-members accident and sickness for international travel Detailed information about this additional insurance and when and how to obtain it is available on your Volunteer Resources CD and our website. Questions may be directed to the GSMH HR/benefits coordinator.

At Least 8 Weeks Prior □□ Discuss with girls; form a committee if appropriate. □□ Check Volunteer Essentials for safety guidelines and requirements. □□ Determine a date, time, and location. □□ Develop communication plan for event. 6-8 Weeks Prior □□ Develop the program and budget for the event. Check out www.girlscouts.org or other websites (see page 17) for great ideas. □□ Contact any presenters or special guests desired. □□ Pre-order refreshments, if desired. □□ Locate and secure event site location. □□ Develop “Plan B” and cancellation plan. □□ Send invitations. 4-6 Weeks Prior □□ Finalize program for event. □□ Purchase supplies and equipment, including applicable participant recognition items. □□ Take RSVPs; send out confirmations if desired. □□ Purchase Mutual of Omaha non-member insurance through the GSMH HR/benefits coordinator. 2-3 Weeks Prior □□ Review/assign responsibilities for event day. □□ Confirm with any presenters invited. □□ Create signs (e.g., parking, directions) if necessary. □□ Customize girls’ certificates and award presentations (bridging certificates are available at GSMH retail shops; other certificates are available at www.girlscoutsmoheartland.org). □□ Print event programs for guests, if desired (customizable program cover templates for bridging and court of awards are available for download at www.girlscoutsmoheartland.org). □□ Visit site again for last-minute details, if desired. Event Day □□ Arrive early and review event schedule. □□ Set up room/building to welcome guests. □□ Greet presenters; assist with set-up if necessary. □□ Review day’s expectations with girls and adults. □□ Leave site clean and picked up. After Event □□ Hold a girl/committee meeting to evaluate. □□ Send thank-you notes as appropriate.

Troop Travel Travel—whether it be around town or around the world—can be an enriching and educational Girl Scout pathway. Of course, there are program standards and procedures that you should follow to ensure that the experience is safe, fun, and rewarding for all. For All Trips (including in-town field trips) Make sure that you receive a signed Parent/Guardian Permission Slip for each girl before departure. In addition, keep the following vehicle guidelines in mind: • Girl Scouts of the USA recommends 2 adults per car. • There must be least one adult with current CPR/ First Aid registration traveling with the group. • Each vehicle should have a First Aid kit.

Bright idea: Check out pages 22–24 for local activity ideas! GSMH’s Leadership & Learning Specialists are great resources for other field trip or service project ideas. Just give her/him a call! For Day Trips of 50+ Miles & Simple Overnights A troop travel application must be submitted to your volunteer service team manager for approval (preferably 4 weeks in advance). If there is no service team manager, or of the service team manager is a participant in the trip, the application should be submitted to a GSMH leadership and learning specialist.

Field Trip Check List At Least 4-6 Weeks Before Trip □□ With girl input, establish purpose of trip. □□ Discuss finances with girls and families. □□ Review troop travel procedures. □□ If required, submit troop travel application. □□ If needed, purchase Mutual of Omaha non-member insurance or additional accident and sickness coverage through HR/benefits coordinator. 3-4 Weeks Before Trip □□ Have girls practice any new skills that will be used. □□ Secure adult participants with proper training. □□ Inform parents of upcoming trip/event; distribute permission slips and instructions. □□ Secure transportation. □□ Identify emergency contacts for trip. □□ Inventory first-aid kits (1 per car). Day of Trip □□ Make sure that: Leader has □□ A permission slip for each girl. □□ A health history form for each girl. □□ Emergency contact information for each driver.

For Trips 100+ Miles Outside Council Jurisdiction, 3+ Nights, or International A troop travel application must be submitted for approval by both your volunteer service team manager and a staff leadership and learning specialist. Please complete the troop travel application at least 4 weeks in advance for domestic trips; 12 weeks for international trips.

Additional accident & sickness insurance coverage must be purchased through Mutual of Omaha for trips lasting 3 or more nights. Please contact the GSMH HR/ benefits coordinator for more information.

Each driver/car has □□ A seat belt/car seat for each girl in car. □□ A trip itinerary and map. □□ A first-aid kit. □□ Site rules (preferably written) to review with girls.

Every girl deserves the chance to explore the world. The Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland Travel Pathway provides girls the opportunity to learn about different regions of the United States, participate in Girl Scout National Conventions, and even to experience different cultures of the world. GSMH is excited to offer a three-year rotation of amazing travel opportunities. Girls should mark their calendars and start saving now—they won’t want to miss these!

Summer 2013: Washington, D.C. Girls will discover the history and beauty of our nation’s capital. Special attractions may include visits to the Smithsonian Museum, Arlington National Cemetery, the Lincoln Memorial, Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Washington Monument and more! October 16-19, 2014: GSUSA National Council Session/53rd National Convention Salt Lake City, UT. A leadership experience like no other! Join Girl Scouts from all across the United States to connect and take action on issues that affect the future of girls and the Girl Scout Movement. Girls will attend the opening and closing ceremonies and have time to explore a Hall of Exhibits and enjoy first class entertainment! Summer 2015: Europe. Girl Scout safety When preparing for any activity with girls, start by reading the Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints for that particular activity. You can find these on your Volunteer Resources CD and online. Each Safety Activity Checkpoint offers you information on where to do this activity, how to include girls with disabilities, where to find both basic and specialized gear required for the activity, how to prepare yourselves for the activity, what specific steps to follow on the day of the activity, and so on. The checkpoints are formatted as checklists, so that you and the girls can check off each step that has been accomplished. In keeping with the three processes of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, be sure that: • All activities are girl-led. Take into account the age and abilities of the girls. Older girls can take the bulk of the responsibility for carefully planning and executing activities, while younger girls will require more of your guidance but should still be deeply involved in making decisions about their activities. • Girls have the chance to learn cooperatively. Have girls teach each other new skills they may need for the activities, rather than hearing all that from you. • Girls learn by doing. If research or special equipment is needed, they’ll learn better by doing that research themselves than by having you do the legwork and report back to them. Even Daisies can do basic research and give reports or do show-and-tell for each other. Ambassadors may need you only for moral support as they research, teach each other, and plan every detail of their excursions. If Safety Activity Checkpoints do not exist for an activity you and the girls are interested in, check with a GSMH Learning and Leadership Specialist before making any definite plans with the girls. A few activities are allowed only with written council pre-approval and only for girls 12 and over (e.g. operating motorized vehicles, using firearms, trips on changeable waterways), while some are off-limits completely (e.g., bungee jumping, parachuting, extreme variations of approved activities).

Crisis Situations

Girl Scouts has a fantastic safety record and we know that our volunteers take every precaution to assure the safety of Girl Scouts in their care. However, you should always be prepared in case of a serious accident, health emergency or fatality. Please take the time to read through the GSMH Crisis Guide for Leaders, available on the Volunteer Resources CD and online, and carry the bright green Crisis Communication Card with you at all times. Remember: no volunteer should make ANY KIND of statement to the media, or give out names or information. If the media shows up at the scene of the accident or you are contacted by someone from the media, ask the person to call the GSMH Administrative Service Center (877-312-4764) or the after-hours phone number listed on the Crisis Communication Card.

Troop finances 1/3 Rule of Thumb

Troop income earned through troop dues collection, product program, and money earning activities should be helping your girls and all the families to have a Girl Scout experience. A good rule of thumb to follow is a 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 rule. Families and girls should be learning to budget in a responsible and sustainable way. That means each troop should be working to minimize extra costs to themselves and to families at all times. • 1/3 to help cover costs of badges, registrations for the following year, and uniform pieces. All girls should have an opportunity to have a membership paid in full or part by their troop, even if they decide not to join the troop the following year. • 1/3 covers field trips, meeting supplies, and ceremonies…that’s right, only 1/3. Girls should be learning to use their resources wisely and learning the value of saving up for big trips and ideas. • 1/3 for unexpected expenses (like a family who needs financial assistance, or an amazing opportunity that suddenly comes up), and larger expenses (like travel and take action projects).

Troop Money-Earning Projects

The Girl Scout program is intended to be a self-sufficient one. Although most troops find that the Girl Scout product programs provide adequate funds to support troop costs such as membership dues, uniforms, books, service projects, and badge activities, troops may elect to conduct additional money-earning activities during the year. Because Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland, Inc. is the holder of a non-profit 501(c)(3) status, all troop money-earning projects (except the council-sponsored fall product and Girl Scout Cookie programs) must be pre-approved by our resource development department. All projects must comply with state and local laws, be age-appropriate, and adhere to applicable Girl Scout Activity Checkpoints and council policies. Money-earning projects cannot take place during United Way Blackout periods (usually September-October) or council product sale programs. Complete guidelines and the Troop Money-Earning Project Application are available on your Volunteer Resources CD and our website. *Note: Girl Scouts may not raise funds on behalf of other organizations, though they may choose to contribute troop funds to service projects and initiatives of their choice.

Financial Assistance

To help ensure that everyone interested may participate in Girl Scouts, financial assistance is available for national membership dues (girls and adults), handbooks and uniforms (for girls), GSMH program events and summer camp, Girl Scout destinations, and volunteer trainings for adults. Financial assistance is reserved for those who demonstrate need; it is not a substitute for troop funds or product program proceeds. Financial Assistance Application forms are available on your Volunteer Resources CD and our website. For girl applicants, the troop leader and parent should discuss the individual needs of the girl before completing the application. Each applicant must submit a separate application; troop applications are not accepted.

Girl Scout product programs The Girl Scout Cookie and fall product programs are excellent leadership development opportunities. They teach girls about teamwork, planning, budgeting, customer service, and business skills that they will use for years to come. They are also a primary moneyearning activity for girls each year. Each service unit has a volunteer product program manager who will train you and be an ongoing resource. Many troops ask a parent (other than the leaders) to serve as the troop product program manager. It’s a great short-term way for other parents to pitch in, and it allows you to focus on other troop activities!

Cheat Sheets PEPs | Perfect Effortless Programs

Sometimes life is just BUSY, yet you want to provide quality programs for your girls. Or maybe girls have expressed interest in a topic you don’t know much about…. Perfectly Effortless Programs (PEPs) to the rescue! A PEP is a curriculum packet written for you and your girls to explore topics together. Physical supplies for the activities are not provided, but each packet includes a handy supply list and ways to further explore the topic if girls so choose. Please contact your regional leadership and learning specialist to request a PEP. Unlike Program Box Kits, PEPs do not need to be returned. We can email them to you for free, or mail them for a small shipping fee. • Geocaching: For Girl Scout Juniors, this packet expands on the Geocacher Badge. For older girls, it gives information needed to explore this hi-tech treasure game! The packet explains how to use GPS signals to locate a geocache, but you must provide GPS receivers (e.g., smartphones). Cheat Sheets Service Projects

A great way for Girl Scouts to take action to make the world a better place is to do service projects that benefit their communities. Troops should work together to choose projects that are important to them and that are appropriate for the girls’ talents and skills. The girl-led process is essential to the success of service projects. Questions to consider:

What do the girls see in your community that they want to help change? Do they wish more people recycled? Have them work with local businesses or schools to set up a program! What are the girls really interested in? If they like animals, you could check with a local animal shelter to see what they need; if they like to craft, see about making cards for nursing home residents or sewing pillows for heart patients. What personal experiences might inspire action? Do they know someone who has been affected by a serious medical issue? Check with a local hospital or organization to find ways girls can help those fighting that problem. Depending on the age level of the troop involved, it might be learning to knit a soft blanket for those whose treatment tends to make them cold, or it might be as simple as creating care-kits with specific types of lotion for those whose skin is affected by treatment.

After girls select a cause, work together to determine the best way to respond. Service comes in many forms, including:

Collections: Children’s shelters, food banks, nursing homes, hospital wards, and animal shelters are common recipients of item drives. Creations: GSMH girls in the past have made cards for senior citizens, soldiers, and hospital patients; they have also sewn blankets or crocheted hats for newborns; there are tons of possibilities! Services: Consider dog-walking, cleaning, repairing, or beautifying. Education: Inspire others to act with an awareness campaign for saving water, recycling, or saving energy.

Birthday in a Bag Service Project

Turning another year older is a milestone that all kids look forward to, and each deserves to have a birthday celebration! But not all families can afford a birthday party. We’re asking troops and service units to take part in a council-wide service project, Birthday in a Bag. It’s easy! In a gift bag, place party necessities such as a tablecloth, candles, paper plates and cups, party favors, and the dry, non-perishable items for a cake. We suggest troops in a service unit or community work together and create bags for both boys and girls and for different age levels. The birthday bags should be distributed locally. Contact food banks, children’s homes, missions or shelter ahead of time to make sure they will have a way to distribute the bags. Help make every child’s birthday special!

The Conservation Nature Center is located in Cape Girardeau’s North County Park and showcases the rich cultural history and diverse natural resources of southeast Missouri. It features a 160-seat auditorium, three classrooms, hands-on exhibits, a scientific research laboratory, freshwater aquariums, and an indoor wildlife viewing area. The White Oak Trace features two miles of nature trails allowing visitors to traverse rolling river hills with sinkholes, deep hollows, and ravines covered with prominent stands of poplar and oak. Native plants featured in the nature center’s landscape provide habitat for hummingbirds, butterflies, and other wildlife species. Visitors can start their experience in the Exhibit Gallery by viewing Paul Corbin’s collection of Native American artifacts, including primitive tools that were used to harvest plants and animals hundreds of years ago. Interactive exhibits encourage exploration of the forest, marsh, swamp, and big river habitats of southeast Missouri. Twin Pines Conservation Education Center | Winona, MO

Located in the midst of Missouri’s most productive forests, Twin Pines places a special emphasis on the history of the Ozarks’ timber industry. Displays at Twin Pines include vintage logging equipment, a log cabin and an early 20th century schoolhouse. Other exhibits, such as a restored 1946 Chevrolet panel truck outfitted with a generator and movie projector, celebrate early efforts to spread conservation messages to Ozark communities. Twin Pines offers opportunities for hiking, birdwatching, photography and other nature activities. A trail provides access to several forest types. Are your girls into camping? Do they love seeing what’s around the bend, over the hill, or down the stream? Are they interested in checking out as many of Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland’s program centers as possible? Brownie Butterfly Adventure

Discover the journey of a caterpillar on its way to being a beautiful butterfly during this afternoon adventure through the Botanical Gardens at Close Memorial Park. At the butterfly house, girls will be surrounded with butterflies native to the Midwest and learn about what flowers attract butterflies. Girls will also get to explore the 100-acre park through a scavenger hunt, and give service by planting a bed of flowers for the Botanical Gardens. Cost includes a plant to take home. Magic of Chemistry: Fun with Polymers

In Fun with Polymers, one of three Magic of Chemistry workshops, Girl Scouts become product consultants for an imaginary company, Polymer Fun, Inc. The participants visit with ‘research scientists’ to make and evaluate new polymer products. Girls will make and test ‘slime’ as well as completing other experiments such as ‘incredible incrediblobs,’ ‘moo glue,’ and ‘supersoakers.’ They then get to take their new products home with them! This program is funded by grants and the support of sponsors and collaborators at a cost of more than $20 per person. Because of their generosity, the fee for girls and adults is only $10. This cost includes lunch, a t-shirt, and patch. A 1:4 ratio of adults to girls is necessary; therefore, registered adults will be evenly distributed among all girls in attendance. Adults will assist girls with experiments and help the Program Host manage her group of 20+ girls. NOTE: Program is for Juniors and 6th Grade Cadettes only. Magic of Chemistry Volunteer Training

We need enthusiastic and mature teen Girl Scouts who like to work with younger girls to help make the “Magic of Chemistry” program a success! Several Girl Scouts will be selected to serve as ‘hosts’ at the “Fun with Polymers” workshop. Responsibilites include helping with program preparation, escorting participants throughout the day, and clean-up. Volunteer hosts will be paired with an MU student mentor and receive lunch and a t-shirt. Cadettes must be in 7th or 8th grade. Interested girls must be able to attend both the training and program sessions, and should submit a 50-100 word essay with their registration form entitled, “Why I want to volunteer for this program.” Selection notification will be sent about a week before the training via email.

Springfield Little Theatre’s Seussical The Musical Green Eggs and Girl Scouts

Oh the places you’ll go - like to see “Seussical the Musical!” This play combines Dr. Seuss’ favorite characters and stories into one really fun show! “Green Eggs and Girl Scouts” will take the girls deep into the historic Landers Theatre where they will play theater games and learn a dance and song from the show’s choreographer - plus, they’ll get a backstage tour, a picture taken with the show’s cast, and refreshments. Treetoppers

Girls discover the excitement of our High Ropes Challenge Courses as they climb ropes, cables and trees. They’ll stretch their comfort zone and traverse elements such as the Postman’s Walk, Floating Islands or the Zip Line (each course has different elements). They’ll test their own limits and see if they can handle the heights. All safety equipment, including harnesses and safety ropes, is provided.

Turpentine Creek Wild Animal Refuge Trip

Spend a day you will never forget with the big cats at Turpentine Creek Wildlife Refuge (TCWR), home to more than 100 tigers, lions, and mountain lions—as well as a bear or two. Girls will get a guided tour of the animals, hear their stories, and learn about career paths working with big cats from college interns at TCWR. Next, girls and adults will perform a hands-on service project to help improve the lives of the animals. Participants will end their day watching feeding time for the animals—one of the highlights of the refuge. After an inspiring day with the animals, kick back at a hotel where we will eat pizza and play games. Price includes admission to TCWR, hotel with four to a room, dinner and breakfast. NOTE: Participants will be responsible for their own transportation to and from Eureka Springs and a sack lunch for Saturday.

Volunteer Trainings Trainings are an important and helpful component of your Girl Scout volunteer experience. Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland is committed to providing its volunteers with quality resources, ideas, and support.

Volunteer Training Check List

How to Register for Trainings : Complete the Training Registration Form (page 51 of this publication or at www. girlscoutsmoheartland.org). Please use a separate form for each individual. When. The registration deadline is 14 days before each training session. Please make sure to allot enough time for your registration to reach its destination if you mail it. Where. Please use one of the following methods to sub mit your registration and payment: • Email gscouts@girlscoutsmoheartland.org • Mail to any GSMH Service Center Fees.

Training fees must be paid at the time of registration. Financial assistance is available for council-scheduled trainings only (see page 55). No refunds will be given after the registration deadline date unless the training is cancelled by the council. All refunds of $5 or less will be in the form of Girl Scout Shop credit, which may be used at any GSMH retail shop.

*Because emergencies require prompt action and quick judgment, Girl Scouts recommend that at least one adult volunteer be first-aid/CPR certified. Courses offered by chapters of the American Red Cross, National Safety Council, EMP America, and American Heart Association are approved. First Aid/CPR training that is available entirely online does not satisfy Girl Scouts’ requirements, as they do not offer enough opportunities for technique practice and feedback.

Late Registrations: If the registration deadline for a training has passed, please call us at 877-312-4764 to see if there is room in the session and to confirm that it has not been cancelled. If session space is still available, you will need to mail your registration and payment prior to the training date. If the session is full, a waiting list will be kept and you will be notified if there is a vacancy or an additional date is scheduled. Confirmations: Confirmations will be sent to the email address provided on the registration form, unless otherwise requested. Cancellations and Changes: Training sessions with fewer than the minimum number of participants may be cancelled. Those registered will be notified of any cancellation. Most trainings are conducted by volunteers. As a courtesy to them and to ensure that people on waiting lists may attend, please call us if you are no longer able to attend. Trainings are generally held “rain or shine”! In the event of severe weather cancellations, every effort will be made to contact registered participants. Please plan to arrive 5–10 minutes before the start of the training to allow time for check-in and greetings. Orientation

Required for all new troop volunteers. This session is done once an applicant has been approved to be a volunteer. It is an in-person session that prepares new leaders on the basics of starting a troop. You will learn how to: register girls and adults, set up a bank account, handle emergencies, use safety activity checkpoints, develop family support, conduct your first meeting, and much more! Your orientation will be scheduled by your membership marketing specialist, regional leadership and learning specialist—volunteerism, or volunteer service team manager.

Girl Scouting 101

Required for all new volunteers; recommended for returning volunteers. This is a 45-minute, self-paced online orientation to Girl Scouting. This training is for new Girl Scout volunteers or returning volunteers who want to brush up on areas of interest. Topics covered are Girl Scout basics, Girl Scout Safety, the National Program Portfolio, The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting, and much more. This training is also available on DVD; see the Trainings On Request section (page 46) for more information.

CPR/First Aid

Required for at least one adult per troop/group. Adults acting as primary first aid providers for Girl Scout activities must be certified in first aid and CPR to meet Girl Scout safety standards. New and experienced leaders, assistant leaders, and other registered adults may attend this course. Note: CPR/First Aid offered through any other agency must be approved by GSMH PRIOR to attending the course. Basic Outdoor Skills

Basic Troop Camping

Required for camping at an established campsite. Participants start with a pre-camp planning session, which covers topics such as troop camping forms, equipment list, makeables (e.g., sit-upons, buddy burners, bedrolls, etc.) and Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints. This is a 25-minute, self-paced, streamlined online orientation for series and event volunteers who are new to the organization and want to share their time and skills with girls in a one-time event or the series pathway (meeting girls for only a few weeks or months, not a full year). This training is broken down into six parts: What Girl Scouts Do; Mission, Promise, and Law; Girl Scout Cookies; Staying Safe; Ages and Stages: What Girl Scouts are Like; and Ready to Work with Girls. 1. Volunteer Recognitions

Each year, volunteers have the opportunity to recognize each other for exemplary service. The process for the Outstanding Leader and Outstanding Volunteer awards is handled by a volunteer service unit recognitions chair. Volunteers with up to 20 years of service may also be recognized in service units with a Years of Service Pin. A board-appointed committee accepts and reviews nominations for council-level awards—the Appreciation Pin, Honor Pin, Thanks Badge, and Thanks Badge II. These awardees, along with volunteers receiving a Years of Service Pin for 25 or more years, are recognized at the council’s annual meeting event. The Juliette Low Community Partnership Award recognizes community members or groups for activities or projects resulting in positive awareness of Girl Scouting. Each service unit may submit one nomination annually to the board-appointed committee. Nomination forms for all awards will be posted by late September at www.girlscoutsmoheartland.org.

Join us for fun, friendship, and learning! Come for the whole weekend, or for just a few workshops! Leadership workshops might include games, crafts, songs, relaxation, cooking, dance, and more! Girl Scout trainings will include Leadership Essentials, CPR/First Aid Recertification, and Basic Outdoor Skills. GSMH event registration policies All girls and adults participating in council-sponsored programs must be registered Girl Scout members. Pre-registration is required for all events/leadership opportunities unless otherwise stated in program or event descriptions.

4. Buddies: A non-Girl Scout buddy who is in the same grade level as the event can attend by paying a $12.00 national membership fee in addition to the event fee. 5. Program Attendance Policies:

• Please read program descriptions carefully. Many require girls to bring items (e.g., a sack lunch) or to wear specific clothing. Help us ensure that each girl enjoys a quality program experience by making sure they have what they need to fully participate. • Siblings or children not registered for program events are considered ‘tag-alongs.’ These individuals are discouraged from attending Girl Scout programs and events, unless specifically deemed a family or age appropriate event. However, if a parent must bring this child, the parent/guardian is responsible for providing supervision as well as an age-appropriate activity. This activity should not distract from or interfere with the scheduled Girl Scout program. These individuals may not participate in the Girl Scout program being offered. The non-member insurance provided through Mutual of Omaha does not cover tag-alongs for programs intended for Girl Scouts. Therefore, GSMH is not liable for these individuals; parents are solely responsible for the care and safety of ‘tag-alongs.’ If the parent/guardian does not provide appropriate supervision, or the child causes a distraction or safety issue, the parent and child will be asked to leave the program site.

Registration Procedures 1. Complete required forms:

• Use a separate registration form for each event/program. • Enclose the appropriate fee with each form. You may make copies of the forms in this magazine or download them online. • Girls must be accompanied at events by a troop leader or other adult chaperone unless otherwise stated. • The adult in charge needs to have Parent Permission forms as well as the Health History forms for each girl on hand at all times in case of an emergency.

As a Girl Scout volunteer, you may know other people in your community who would be wonderful contributors to Girl Scouting. To thank you for your help in building our membership, we will continue to offer our Sister to Sister patch program. All current members—girl and adult—are eligible to participate. If you recruit a new member into Girl Scouting, you will receive a patch to build a “Circle of Friends.” Your first patch is the center patch (circle-shaped); colorful girl patches can be earned for each addtional member that you recruit. Use the Sister to Sister form below and attach it to the newly registered member’s registration form; you both will receive a patch.
