This camp guide is loaded with fun, adventure, and new programs designed just for you. We’re so excited you’re thinking about coming to summer camp, and we’re hoping to excite you, too! For more than 100 years, camping has been a cornerstone of what Girl Scouts do. We have four summer camps that will inspire you to take the lead in an all-girl safe space where you’re free to explore, learn, and have fun without pressure. While having exciting, girl-led adventures you’ll learn about self-reliance, leadership, and perseverance. Our camps are open to any girl, regardless of previous Girl Scout involvement. Whether it’s your first time at camp or your fifth, there’s something new for you to discover in girl-led activities through which the Girl Scout experience truly comes to life! Finbrooke & Mintahama

Camp name: Jo Bob How long have you been a Girl Scout? I’ve been a Girl Scout for 17 years! Favorite camp song? The Princess Pat Favorite place at each program center? At Mintahama, my favorite place is the singing tree. At Finbrooke, my favorite place is the porch of the lodge looking out into main camp. What advice do you have for campers? Don’t be afraid to try something new! Whether that is trying a new session, a longer camp, or applying for the Leadership Program. We will do our best to help you succeed in building courage, confidence, and character in any resident camp session!

Cherokee Ridge & Latonka

Camp name: Chaos How long have you been a Girl Scout? Since I was 7 years old! Favorite camp song? Boom, Boom, Ain’t it Great to Be Crazy Favorite place at each program center? At Latonka, my favorite place is where we have a beautiful final campfire that overlooks Lake Wappapello. At Cherokee Ridge, my favorite place is on the front porch of the Dining Hall—you overlook the whole camp and have a great seat to some of the best sunsets! What advice do you have for campers? Be willing to try new things—there are so many activities, try them all! Camp friends are the best friends—meet everyone and make new friends!

Camp is a great place for you to chill out—hang out poolside, create an art project, and sing songs over a campfire. You’ll also have the chance to choose other daily activities like archery, canoeing, horseback riding, or hiking. Girls will work towards the Social Butterfly badge.

On land and by sea, this is the best of both worlds! Learn to mount, dismount, walk, rein, groom, and saddle your horse. Spend two hours each day building your riding skills! When you are not at the barn, you’ll paddle your heart out while learning all about canoeing. After learning the basics, you’ll even canoe on Lake Potashnik. You will work towards the Horseback Riding badge.

Happy Trails Intermediate

Take an overnight pack trip with your horses by the St. Francis river! But first, you’ll focus on Western pleasure, reining, and trail work, and sharpen your skills by practicing timed events like barrel racing, pole bending, and flag races. Camp Aide

Are you ready to blaze a new trail? You’ll play games, hit the trails of Cherokee Ridge, and learn tricks all while on horseback. You will work towards the Animal Helpers badge. Prerequisites: Intermediate horse session or permission from outdoor program specialist. Girls must be able to groom, saddle and care for their horse; girls must pass the “ring test” or have previously participated in GSMH trail rides.

With this leadership program, you’ll enjoy camp favorites and special activities while helping at the kitchen, waterfront, and program areas at camp. If you’ve already completed Program Aide training, you can also choose aiding in a unit! Prerequisite: Completion of the 7th grade.

Wrangler in Training II

Prepare yourself to become a horseback riding instructor in GSMH’s horse program. Further develop your riding skills and learn techniques for teaching and supervising horseback-riding students. You’ll also learn horse psychology and medical emergency skills. This is an intense program. Participants should demonstrate excellent horsemanship and riding skills. Prerequisite: Completion of 8th grade.

Improve your leadership skills and learn the more about teaching ground lessons. Explore the essentials of delivering a riding program by assisting with lessons, theory, and program operations. This is an intense program. Participants should demonstrate excellent horsemanship and riding skills. Prerequisites: Completion of 9th grade and WIT I.

Participants may spend the weekend at camp for an additional $20. Weekend activities will involve sleeping in, relaxing, and doing laundry.

Found along the beautiful Finley River, Finbrooke is a spectacular camp tucked away just outside of Springfield in Christian County. From the excitement of rappelling off the tower, hiking to the “Hidden Falls,” and perfecting your shot at the archery range—Finbrooke offers an ultimate camp experience. 16

Forest Fairies July 25 OR July 26 Early Bird: $50 On Time: $65

Celebrate the magic of nature as we discover the hidden world of the fairies. Let your imagination go wild designing a fairy house and wand! Enjoy a sweet treat at a tea party in the forest while the Fairy Queen tells stories of magic and mischief. You will work towards the Welcome to the Daisy Flower Garden Journey.

Little Mermaids

Outdoor Adventurer

Become a mermaid this summer! Play water games, swim, and explore the water by learning what lives in it. You’ll even make an art project and have a picnic. You will work towards Between Earth and Sky Journey.

Explore Finbrooke by wading in the river, taking a nature hike, and teaming up with your new friends to compete in a game of capture the flag. When you’re not exploring, you’ll build a campfire, practice your knots, and build a bird feeder. You will work towards the Outdoor Adventurer badge.

Bits & Pieces

July 29-31 Early Bird: $130 • On Time: $145 Visit the craft barn, test your swimming skills, hike the trails of Finbrooke, and roast a s’more while singing songs! Great for new campers. You will work towards the Making Friends badge.

Mermaid Lagoon

July 25-27 Early Bird: $130 • On Time: $145 Calling all mermaids! Swim every afternoon, then trade in your fins for feet so you can slip ‘n’ slide, play water piñata, and become a land mermaid. Make mermaid-inspired art and take a hike to the river. You will work towards the Wonders of Water Journey.

What would you do with a ball of clay? Pottery Pixies lets you explore the art of designing your very own pottery. Let your creativity shine through your work of art! You will work towards the Pottery badge.

Wizardry for Muggles

A diva deserves to get away for a while, relax by canoeing on the river, lounge by the pool at a luau, and take the occasional dip. The pampering will continue with homemade facials, nail painting, and making your own lei! You will work towards the Social Butterfly badge.

Do you have what it takes to win the house cup? Get sorted by the Sorting Hat, and then get ready for a week at Hogwarts – camp style! Attend your favorite Hogwarts classes, Care of Magical Creatures, Herbology, Quidditch, and Potions. You will work towards the aMUSE Journey.

Adventure Bound

Do you crave adventure? Start yours by hitting our low ropes course for a challenge you will never forget! Your adventure continues with archery, tackling our high ropes course, canoeing, geocaching, and so much more. You will work towards the Trailblazing badge.

Discover the leader in you! While providing an opportunity to connect with yourself and others, this intense two-week session prepares you for the rigors and rewards of being a camp counselor. Ready for more? Not only will you be teaching others, but you will be discovering new skills to help you become a more highly-skilled counselor. This experience will help prepare you to become a Junior Counselor next summer! Prerequisites: Completion of the 10th grade and CIT I.

Come aboard and prepare to get wet! Perfect your canoeing skills by taking a canoe trip to People’s Creek and then take an overnight canoe trip with your new mates to the island on Lake Wappapello. The quest is not over until you explore Lake Wappapello by a pontoon boat ride. You will work towards the Get Moving! Journey.

Campers will participate in age appropriate all-camp kapers (flag ceremony, picking up litter from the ground, and prepping the dining area before and after a meal) and are expected to help clean their living quarters, unit bathrooms, and unit campsite.

At Girl Scout summer camp, girls develop leadership skills as they Discover themselves, Connect with nature, and Take Action with their new friends! Girl input is utilized to personalize the program activities for each camp session. Campers spend about half of their time participating in activities related to the theme of their camp session and the other half participating in general camp activities (swimming, hiking, etc.). Every camper will go home with a certificate, a patch, and a Journey/badge progress report!

Camp counselors are dedicated to giving campers an amazing camp experience and keeping girls safe. It is extremely important for campers to talk to their camp counselors about any concerns, worries, or needs. Communication between campers and counselors is encouraged to provide the best experience possible! All members of our staff are at least 18 years old and are selected for their maturity, enthusiasm, experience, leadership ability, compassion, and commitment in putting campers first! All of our potential staff members go through a comprehensive screening and interview process, including background and reference checks. After being hired each summer, staff members participate in an intensive, week-long training program in child development, group management, camping skills, conflict resolution, bullying prevention, CPR/First Aid, and specialty areas. Many return year after year because we know that retaining our staff is important to your camperâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s experience.

Health Care at Camp All camps meet established standards for health and safety, site maintenance, program and personnel, which are set by state and local governments and Girl Scouts of the USA. An on-site health supervisor with advanced medical training is available 24 hours a day and counselors are informed of campersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; medical history and medication needs to ensure proper first aid and medical assistance. All camp staff follows an established Treatment Procedures reviewed by a doctor; the health supervisor manages camper medications, and minor camper illnesses and injuries are handled on-site following parent/guardian directions on the Health History form. Upon arrival at camp, each camper will receive a health screening. Campers will not be allowed to attend camp if they have fevers or evidence of head lice. Campers use sunscreen and bug spray on a regular basis and are encouraged to drink plenty of water. Campers are also covered by supplemental health and accident insurance. The insurance cost is included in the camp fee.

Camper drop-off and pick-up is closely monitored; campers are released only to adults listed by the parent or guardian and who show a picture ID. Once in our care, camps follow adult-to-girl supervision ratios specified by Girl Scoutsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Safety Activity Checkpoints.

All campers must provide their own transportation to and from camp.

Sleeping Arrangements Girls of comparable age are organized in groups living in campsites consisting of cabins, platform tents, bunk-style quarters, and treehouses. Girl Scouts of the USA requires that staff have separate sleeping arrangements from campers. The staff are housed in a cabin or tent, etc. in close proximity of the campers. The girls we be shown where the staff will sleep, in case they need the staff at any time of the day or night when they are in the campsite.

Meals and Dietary Restrictions

Camp Buddies

Campers are provided three full meals a day plus snacks! Campers staying a full week at camp will experience cooking in their unit campsite. Please indicate special dietary needs on the health history and medication form, and please do not bring any food or drinks from home.

Summer Camp is a place to make new friends, as many girls come to camp not knowing anyone. Camp staff is trained to help girls make new friends, but if girls would like to be placed in a unit with a buddy, both girls must register for the same session, indicate their buddy choice when they register.

Communication Cell Phones Cell phones are not allowed at any of our camps. Any cell phone brought to camp will be secured in the camp office until the camper returns home. Please help us enforce this policy by ensuring that your camper does not bring a cell phone to camp. We are not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged phones.

Phone Calls Campers are not permitted to make phone calls while at camp. If any concerns or questions arise during your camperâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s experience, a member of our staff will call you.

Mail Letters are the best form of communication with your camper during camp. To ensure that your camper received a letter each day, bring letters to check-in. Include preaddressed and stamped envelopes for your camper to write back!

Registration

Early Bird Package

Girl Scout summer camp registrations will be accepted starting March 1, 2018, and on a first-come, first-served basis. Registrations will be accepted until a program session is full. Online payments can be made by credit or debit card. Visit girlscoutsmoheartlad.org to register online. Online registration is preferred, but if you require paper registration, visit Forms on girlscoutsmoheartland.org, or stop by any of our Service Centers.

Girl Scout summer camp will be offering an early bird package, which includes early bird pricing and a free camp t-shirt. To take advantage of the early bird package, everyone must register and pay the non-refundable deposit (even if you are using Cookie Credit, you still need to pay the non-refundable deposit) before May 15, 2018. After May 15, 2018, the on-time pricing will go into effect and the free t-shirt will no longer be available. You will be able to purchase other camp t-shirts in the Trading Post at camp.

Girl Scout Cookie Credit Girl Scout Cookie Credit can be used to pay for summer camp (including the non-refundable deposit). Cookie Credit is non-refundable, unless a cancellation is requested due to a serious family emergency or illness verified in writing by a doctor. If you would like to use Cookie Credit but do not receive it by the time you register for camp, the deposit is still required; after your Cookie Credit is received you may apply it to the camp balance. If the amount of Cookie Credit used plus the amount of your deposit exceeds the total cost of your camp balance, you will receive a refund for the overage. Due to the volume of these requests, it may take up to two weeks to receive your refund.

Free week of camp The Free Week of Camp Certificate earned through the 2018 Girl Scout Cookie Program applies only to GSMH resident camp programs and expires on August 3, 2018. Value is not to exceed $360. An email with instructions will be sent in April to recipients. If you already paid the nonrefundable deposit then the deposit will be refunded when you register for camp.

Financial Assistance

To apply for financial assistance, please review the Financial Assistance Guidelines and submit a Financial Assistance Application, found on our website under Forms, with your registration. Financial assistance will only be granted for one session per camper, and does not cover the nonrefundable deposit, which needs to be paid at the time or before the Financial Assistance Application is submitted.

Changes, Cancellations, and Refunds Each program session has a minimum number of campers required. If the minimum number of campers is not met, the program will be canceled. Camp registration fees, including the non-refundable deposit, will be refunded if a camper cannot be placed in her first, second, or third choice. To request a program session change, parents or guardians should contact the registration support coordinator at 877312-4764 or email info@girlscoutsmoheartland.org to see if the change is possible. All program session changes must be made at least two weeks before the camp program session starts. Changes requested after two weeks before camp program session starts will be considered on a case-by-case basis. If a camper fails the health screening upon arrival at camp, which means they have fever or have evidence of head lice, every effort will be made to place her in a similar program session at a later date. If this is not possible, a full refund will be granted. Every effort will be made to place a camper who misses her choice of program session due to illness, injury, or family emergency in another program session. A refund is only given if written notice of cancellation is received two weeks before the camp program session starts, or if the camper is ill and a written notice of cancellation is accompanied by a statement from the camperâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s attending physician. A refund will not be issued for cancellations made less than two weeks before their camp session, for no-shows, or if a camper leaves a session already in progress due to homesickness, illness, behavioral issues, or parental request.
