With more than 200,000 acres the state park system has something to fit everyone’s needs. The system includes homes of famous Missourians, Civil War battlefields, and reminders of yesterday such as gristmills and covered bridges. Over 18 million people visit annually to hike, camp, fish, discover the past, and explore nature. Hike a variety of trails or experience the interpretive exhibits, and a bird viewing area located in the Visitor Center. Shepard of the Hills Fish Hatchery Branson, MO • 417-334-4865 The visitor center at the hatchery offer exhibits and wildlife viewing. During June, July, and August they conduct guided hatchery tours and self-guided tours for the rest of the year. This is a perfect introduction to backpacking through the great outdoors! This program requires attending the shakedown to learn about equipment needed, and for menu planning and a practice hike. We live in a world of screens—smartphone! laptop! TV! tablet!—and sometimes you just want to get away from it all. We get it. That’s why you can focus a part of your Girl Scout experience on getting outdoors. You’ll develop the kind of outdoor skills it’s hard to get anywhere else. Skills like building a campfire, pitching a tent, and canoeing across a lake. Troop Camping is a great way for girls to explore leadership, build skills, and develop a deep appreciation for nature. Whether for a day, a weekend, or longer, camping gives girls an opportunity to grow, explore, and have fun under the guidance of caring, trained adults.

Things to know before troop camping: • A camping experience of less than one week in duration that takes place within GSMH boundaries, is considered Troop Camping. • For overnight camping at a GSMH Program Center, at least one official adult volunteer per unit must be certified in GSMH outdoor level training. Another adult volunteer must be certified in CPR and First Aid. • Troops must obtain approval from GSMH before camping on non-GSMH sites, except for overnight backyard camping. Backyard camping does not require approval. • Troops can use the Outdoor Adventure Programs on Request to add even more adventure to their Troop Camping experience!

Classroom lectures and demonstrations are combined with realistic scenarios where mock patients will challenge you to integrate your learning. At the end of the course, you’ll have had the opportunity to learn the knowledge, skills, and ability to make sound decisions in emergency situations. This training prepares you to teach girls the skills for planning and experiencing a simple overnight camping trip—in a backyard or at a GSMH program center. Topics include knot-tying, cooking over a fire, dressing for the weather, packing, and programming. This course is a prerequisite for Outdoor Level 3. $15 • ADULT

This training is required for tent camping at a GSMH Program Center or camping at an established campsite. This training prepares you to teach girls the skills involved with planning and experiencing a multi-day trip, including Outdoor Level 2 skills review, tent use and care, campsite selection, outdoor cooking with a skillet and fuel stove, knot-tying, and the Leave No Trace principles. As a leader, you want to be able to ignite a spark of adventure in your Girl Scouts. What better way than to get outdoors? The Roughin’ It outdoor readiness program offers authentic learning experiences that will prepare you for troop-life in the great outdoors. A few of the practical and fun skills we’ll engage in are: knot tying, campfire cooking, and outdoor games. Choose from the options below: Option A: Outdoor Level 2 Training only from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday $15. Option B: Outdoor Level 2 and Outdoor Level 3, Saturday at 9 a.m. to Sunday morning. This training is for Service Unit Day Camp Directors to learn the responsibilities of the position by reviewing policies, procedures, and best practices associated with running a Day Camp. This training is available on demand at any time throughout the year. No minimum required. Please request at least 3 weeks in advance of a preferred date by emailing info@girlscoutsmoheartland.org.

In some cases, we can bring the training to you or we can set up a training with a date that works for your volunteers. In this eight-hour certification course, you’ll learn how to accurately shoot a bow, teach beginner level archery, manage basic archery programs, repair equipment, and build confidence through archery. This course includes an instructor manual. This certification is viable for three years. Please bring a sack lunch, snacks, and a water bottle. We have partnered with Fox Run Stables located just outside of Cape Girardeau, MO. Fox Run is a 75acre equestrian community that features a 150x250 foot outdoor riding ring, plus a fully enclosed 80x160 foot indoor arena, which allows lessons to not be affected by the weather. They offer both Western and English disciplines. Instructors are CHA certified and have 40 years combined experience in showing, training, teaching and riding horses.

Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland

Starting at Latonka Program Center, girls will travel to Fox Run Stable on Monday morning and will spend their nights in the dorms at Southeast Missouri State University. Girls will spend their days Monday through Thursday at the barn and will experience four hours each day on horseback. Thursday afternoon girls will travel back to Latonka Program Center to join in the last night campfire. Lessons combine learning riding skills with horsemanship. Not all lessons are taught on horseback. Classroom and barn instruction are part of the equestrian program. Fox Run prides themselves on teaching responsibility, discipline, coordination, and good sportsmanship with an emphasis on safety. Girls will learn to correctly halter, groom, tack up, ride, and care for horses. When not at the barn, girls will have time to swim, canoe, hike, and create art. Girls will eat breakfast and dinner on campus and have a sack lunch at Fox Run Stables.

Jungle Juniors June 30-July 5 • $250 • Grades 4-5 Swing through the jungle on the rope course, fly through the sky on the zipline, and climb across the pirates crossing and postman’s walk! When not on the ropes course, go swimming, make a few crafts, and hang with jungle friends. Girls will work towards the Staying Fit badge.

Greek mythology abounds! Train to take your place among the Olympians by learning self-defense and archery before heading out on a quest…oracle permitting! Prepare by making a shield and honing skills through a game of capture the flag. Girls will work towards the Field Day badge.

Program Aide Training June 16-21 • June 21-28 June 30—July 5 • July 7-12 • $150 By earning the Cadette Program Aide Award, Cadettes will learn the basic skills and strategies they need to work with younger girls. Girls will be trained to teach outdoor skills to younger girls as well. Prerequisites: Leadership in Action Award and completion of 5th grade.

Camp Aide June 16-21 • June 23-28 June 30—July 5 • July 7-12 • $130 Enjoy camp favorites and special activities while helping at the kitchen, waterfront, and program areas at camp. If you’ve already completed Program Aide training, you can also choose to aid in a unit! Prerequisite: Completion of the 7th grade.

Counselor in Training 1 June 30—July 12 • $310 While connecting with herself and others, this intense two-week session prepares girls for the rigors and rewards of being a camp counselor. Make a difference in a young girl’s life while focusing on a program skill such as drama, hiking, crafts, or outdoor skills. Finally, take action by helping organize and prepare an all-camp activity! Prerequisite: Completion of 9th grade. Participants may spend the weekend at camp for an additional $20. Weekend activities will involve sleeping in, relaxing, and doing laundry.

Counselor in Training 2 June 16-28 • $310 Ready for more? Not only will girls be teaching others, but girls will be discovering new skills to help them become a more highly-skilled counselor. This experience will help prepare girls to become a Junior Counselor next summer! Prerequisites: Completion of the 10th grade and CIT I. Participants may spend the weekend at camp for an additional $20. Weekend activities will involve sleeping in, relaxing, and doing laundry.
