Magic of Chemistry: Discovery of Crystallography

In honor of the International Year of Crystallography, 2014, Girl Scouts will dive into the world of crystals! Encompassing all scientific subjects, participants will discover the principles behind the discovery of DNA’s structure, similarity between diamonds and pencils, uniqueness of snowflakes, and much more. Four laboratories, managed by University of Missouri’s studying scientists, will educate you on the fundamentals of waves, differences between refraction and diffraction, operating microscopes, and fashioning crystals in a hands-on, entertaining style! Then continue your discovery at home with the It’s Your Planet—Change It! Journey. Links will be provided. This program is funded by grants and the support of sponsors and collaborators at a cost of more than $20 per person. Because of their generosity, the fee for you and adults is only $10. This cost includes lunch, a T-shirt, and patch. A 1:4 ratio of adults to girls is necessary; therefore, registered adults will be evenly distributed among all girls in attendance. TAKE ACTION by feeling empowered to make a difference.

Theater Day at Missouri Southern State University

Change It Up!

All around there are opportunities to make a difference, including completing Journeys, Take Action projects, and Silver and Gold Award projects. But where to begin? And how to choose a project that matters? We’ll sample activities from the It’s Your World—Change It series. We’ll also have materials from all older girl Journeys and work together to help girls figure out how they want to journey, and how they want to take action. Learn how to step up and take the lead. Don’t you think it’s time to take “girl-led” to a whole new level?

Have you ever dreamed of being an actress or wondered what happens behind the scenes of a play? Join sister Girl Scouts at the MSSU campus as theater students and professors guide you through a day exploring theater! You will participate in theater games and activities and get a behind the scenes tour of the theater including props and costumes. Best of all, you will end the day watching a live performance of a children’s play! The day will include activities that count toward completion of the It’s Your Story—Tell it! The Invention, Art, and Science of Leonardo da Vinci

The life and works of artist and scientist Leonardo da Vinci fascinate us because, while he exemplified the Italian Renaissance, he transcended his time and place, inventing things like a helicopter 500 years before the technology existed to build one. This program invites you to visit the workshop of Leonardo’s mind where you can learn how a genius thinks. We will take a look at different inventions he created and each participant will get a chance to build and take home a wooden model of one of his inventions. Throughout the program we’ll tie in parts of the aMuse Journey for Juniors, MEdia Journey for Cadettes, and the Mission: Sisterhood for Seniors. Badge and Journey links will be sent home.

ALICE

ALICE is an innovative 3D programming environment that makes it easy to create an animation for telling a story, playing an interactive game, or a video to share on the web. It allows you to learn fundamental programming concepts in the context of creating animated movies and simple video games. In ALICE’s interactive interface, you drag and drop graphic tiles to create a program, where the instructions correspond to standard statements in a production-oriented programming language, Java. You will spend the day creating movies and video games of their own! Juniors will have Journey links to aMUSE and Cadettes will begin on the MEdia Journey. At the end of the day, every girl will go home with a copy of ALICE to continue learning at home.

Summer Camp 2013 Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland offered 6 weeks of resident camp at 4 different program centers across the council. Girls chose from a wide variety of sessions, including ones that emphasized swimming, horseback riding, robotics, challenge courses, basic outdoor fun, and more! Camp provides a unique opportunity for girls to learn traditions of Girl Scouts while also providing a safe, relaxed environment where girls feel free to try new things. Days begin and end with a flag ceremony, meals start after grace, and everyone has Kapers they must complete. In between the swimming, horseback riding, archery, hiking, game playing, song-singing and craft-making, girls find time to relax with a good book, write a letter home to their family, or take a short siesta in the shade. Every day at camp provides girls with an opportunity to make new friends, challenge themselves by trying something new and most of all to make memories that will last a lifetime. 6

destinations Destinations are travel opportunities that range from two days to three weeks for Girl Scout Cadettes and older. There are six types of destinations to fit every girl’s time, budget, and dreams….

International: How about camping in Austria, exploring Peru, or soaking up the culture in India? Outdoors: Sea kayak in Alaska, bike through Michigan, or trek through the Rockies on horseback. Science: Check out space Camp® or hop aboard a schooner to check out the nightlight—underwater. People: Meet new friends, learn about women’s history, or just have a great time in a new city! Apprenticeships: Budding biologists, anthropologists, geologists, and archeologists can work side-by-side with career role models. Getaways: Themes for these 2-4 day events range from a Broadway career workshop to home-building for Habitat for Humanity.

Help us plan our 2016 council trip Each year Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland arranges a trip for girls to expand their horizons and have some new experiences through the Girl Scout Travel Pathway. Our trip locations are planned through 2015 and now we need your help to plan our next adventure! Where do you think our summer 2016 council trip should be? Locations need to be in the continental United States (not Hawaii or Alaska). In the past, we’ve planned trips to Savannah, Georgia; Washington, DC and Chicago, Illinois.

Most Girl Scout destinations require council (GSMH) approval; scholarships are available.

For information about destinations or any council-sponsored trip, contact Leadership and Learning Specialist Stefanie McCall at 877-312-4764 x1137 or smccall@girlscoutsmoheartland.org.

Email your suggestions to Leadership and Learning Specialist Stefanie McCall at smccall@girlscoutmoheartland. org. Feel free to share the reason why you’ve suggested a location. It might help us make our decision! Send all suggestions by December 31, 2013.

To celebrate your achievement, you can earn recognition items in this program. Items are earned based on different sales goals, for both magazine items and nut and chocolate items. Recognitions are cumulative— so whatever goal level you meet, you’ll receive the items at that level AND all the levels below it! For example—if you sell 6 magazine items, you’ll earn: the plush bee (or fancy nail design set—your choice) AND the tapefitti (or stickerzine album—your choice) and the “Be Your Best You” patch.
