Dear Girl Scout Camper, Summer 2013 will be here before you know it! We hope you will spend a part of your summer with us at Girl Scout summer resident camp.

You will have the chance to discover “What Can a Girl Do?” Can you bend water? Or become the first “Camp Iron Chef”? Or saddle up and head out on the trail on your favorite camp horse? Or eat Ants on a Log? Or make a new best friend?

These adventures and much more await you at summer resident camp! Read through this camp guide to learn about fun and excitement planned for you this summer.

How do I choose?

Each program center offers a variety of sessions for all ages. Read the different session descriptions and decide which one best meets your interests. You will also have the opportunity to participate in traditional camp activities like campfires, swimming, and games at all camp sessions. Of course, all of our camps are great places to meet new friends, try something for the first time and build memories to last a lifetime!

Can I bring a friend?

Absolutely! You can even bring a friend who is not a Girl Scout! Just be sure to write your buddy’s name on your Summer Camp Registration form, and be sure that she writes your name on her Summer Camp Registration form. Also, check to make sure that you both sign up for the same program and session and send the registrations in the same envelope.

I’m a Girl Scout Brownie this year, but will be a Girl Scout Junior next year. Should I register for Brownie or Junior programs?

Girls should register for programs based on the grade in which they will be enrolled for the 2013/2014 school year. Girls may attend a summer camp program unit for a younger age level, but not an older one. For example, if you are currently a third grade Girl Scout Brownie and will be a fourth grader in fall 2013, you may register for a Girl Scout Junior, Brownie, or Daisy session.

However, a Girl Scout Brownie currently in second grade who will enter third grade in fall 2013 may only register for a Girl Scout Brownie or Daisy unit, not a Junior one. Girl Scout age levels are as follows: Girl Scout Daisy—Kindergarten-Grade 1 Girl Scout Cadette—Grades 6-8

Experience camp with all 5 senses—hug a tree, smell the campfire, taste some great s‘mores, hear the sounds of animals, and see how much fun you can have at camp! Girl Scout Brownies will explore camp using all 5 senses while also participating in camp activities such as swimming, hiking, and cooking meals outside. You will earn the Senses badge.

There will be plenty of time to enjoy swimming, hiking and other camp activities too. Girls will earn the Animal Habitats badge.

On Target Are you wishing you had amazing archery skills like in the movies? Get on target as you practice and learn the ancient art of archery. You will test your skills on the range and learn how to care for your equipment. Creativity abounds with the games you can play to improve your archery skills. This session is on target for more fun as you enjoy other camp favorites too. Girls will earn the Camper badge.

Spend the week in the one-of-a-kind Luta tree house unit, and put your social, planning, and dance skills to the test as you get ready to host “the dance party of the summer” for your camp guests. Pick a theme, create invitations, and find your music! You will also get to cookout, swim, hike, make arts and crafts and enjoy other camp activities. Girls will earn the Social Butterfly badge.

You’ll sleep in late to catch up on your Zzzzs, and have plenty of day light to swim, canoe and enjoy other activities. Girls will earn the Camper badge.

Get your game face on and enjoy a session full of low ropes challenges and team building games. Hoist your tent mates through a giant “Spider Web,” or spot them on a “Single Line Traverse.” Have you ever tried to do the “TP Shuffle” or maneuver “Giant Skis?” Working together you can conquer the “Mountain Tops.”

Do you ever wonder what kinds of activities and badges the first Girl Scouts worked on with Juliette Low? Do you wish you could travel back in time and try a few? Join us for this Windows to the Past session and try your hand at different badge activities from the 1910s–1990s. We will surely test your Girl Scout skills with activities like outdoor intelligence, how to read secret codes, and treating someone with First Aid. Girls will earn the Windows to the Past patch.

As usual, there is a different color shirt for each program center that features the program center name and year, but if you want one, you must preorder it when your register for camp!

Survivor Challenge

Ropes & Reins C

Your team must work together to create your own primitive living unit. Plan on a week filled with challenges designed to put your teamwork to the test. Be prepared to hike, swim, paddle, and shoot a bow; these skills and more will be needed to navigate your team to success. The true survivor test comes as you plan and take part in an overnight canoe trip to the island. You will earn the Trailblazing badge.

Adventure awaits you and your camp friends as you work together to solve the puzzles and challenges of the low ropes course, climb up into the trees and take on the high ropes course. Then it’s on to the zip line to catch a breeze. Free rappel from the top of the rappelling and climbing tower and chill out at the cool pool. This week is full of excitement, teamwork and high flying adventure! We won’t let you miss the other camp favorites. Girls will earn the First Aid Legacy badge respective of their Girl Scout level.

What could make summer camp better? A horse of course! This session is designed for older girls who would like to learn beginning horse knowledge at an advanced pace. You will learn the basics of safety, grooming, and how to lead your horse, the different pieces of tack, and how to saddle a horse; you will also learn the basics of riding, “walking, stopping, and turning.”

You’ll be ready to weave through polls, turn the barrels, and take a trail ride in no time. There will be plenty of time to enjoy swimming, hiking and other camp activities too. Girls will earn the Outdoors Skill Building badge respective to your Girl Scout level.

We recommend that girls in this session are comfortable with heights.

Do you love camp? Would you like to sample the different types of jobs that camp has to offer? Try your hand helping in the kitchen, get crafty helping in the art studio, or soak up some rays helping out at the waterfronts. You will also have time to enjoy activities just for you and your fellow camp aids. This is a great way to earn hours towards your Service to Girl Scouting Award. You will receive a Camp Aid patch.

On land or water, by horse or boat, you will be moving at camp this summer! Jump in a canoe with your camp buddy and race across the lake.

Saddle up for some friendly horseback riding skills competitions. Toss a ring in the pool, or on horseback! If you want some time in the water and need a horse fix too, this is the session for you. Girls will earn the Energize award component from the It’s Your Planet—Love It journey.

Come and find out how Improvisation can improve your communication skills, how role playing may just lead you down the road to your dream job, or how real friendships and networking can broaden your world. We know you have the passion, let us help you with the drive. Enjoy your free time participating in the other favorites that camp has to offer; or put your leadership skills to work helping to teach younger girls great new skills. Girls will work on the Award components from the It’s Your Story—Tell It Journey. Any hours spent in a leadership role will also be counted towards your Service to Girl Scouting Award.

Come out and blaze a new trail with us. Prepare to eat, sleep and breathe horses this week; you will be trail riding, participating in camp rodeo activities, and taking in a night ride. You will even spend a night out of your unit with the horses. We will save time for camp favorites like swimming, cooking out and crafts too. Girls will earn the Outdoor Skills Building badge respective to their Girl Scout level.

This is an advanced unit; participants must be able to groom, saddle, lead, mount, dismount, care for their horse, and pass a council “Ring Test.” Horse sessions place an emphasis on safety from the ground up; riding may be limited by a participant’s experience and comfort level, or weather conditions.

What’s Four Fires?

Four Fires is a special organization for campers and staff who have attended GSMH Summer Camp for four years or more. The “Four Fires” name stands for the four last-night campfires over those four years. Members of Four Fires must also be enrolled in grade 7 or higher at the time of joining, regardless of number of years attending camp.

This organization is a way to honor those who have shown their love for the camps, and is also a way for those members to give back to the camp and council through service of different activities. That might be a service project to help clean or beautify an area at one of the program centers, setting up an educational activity station, or serving as an ambassador for camp at an Open House or other event.

To take part in any off-season activities, members must be registered Girl Scouts. Pre-requisite years must be at least five-night sessions and can be at any of our program centers. Once you become a member, you can participate in Four Fires at any site.

Four Fires is an honorary organization, and prospective members must accept honorary membership before they can join. Parents or guardians must also agree before their camper can become a member.

The roots of this organization come from three legacy groups, the Ikhato of Cherokee Ridge, the Osage of Latonka, and the Tribe of the Silver Arrow from Mintahama. Members of those organizations are automatically members of Four Fires. There is a special bond of sisterhood between all Girl Scouts, but that is even stronger between those who truly love to camp. This group provides an extra way for campers to bond as sisters.

This twopart experience starts with CIT I–an intense two-week session that prepares you for the rigors and rewards of being a camp counselor.

Learn about yourself and the value of teamwork and leadership skills. Make a difference in a younger girl’s life while enriching yours with new skills like outdoor living, arts, drama and improvisation. Soon you will be on your way to becoming a great leader, role model, and counselor to younger campers.

Are you ready to learn more about horses and how a barn runs? This work study program will prepare you for the next steps to becoming a Wrangler in the Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland’s riding program. Classes will include saddling, feeding, barn and herd management, riding instruction, and emergency procedures, followed by a written test to help you master your new skills. Spend half of your day at the barn and the other half enjoying the other activities that camp has to offer.

What are You Waiting For? The Girl Scout camp experience is a great way to build new skills, get a sense of community, and develop a deep appreciation for nature. Whether you go for a day, a week or longer, Girl Scout camp provides an opportunity to grow, explore, and have fun—always under the guidance of caring, trained adults. Every girl should have a chance to go to camp!

Grab your buddy and both of you can make new friends while swimming, canoeing, playing team games, and singing around the camp fire. You will earn the Manners Skill-Building badge respective to your Girl Scout level.

A pair of campers (two girls only) register together and share living space with another pair of girls. Applications for Double the Fun MUST be stapled together and mailed in the same envelope to be processed together.

If you are not currently registered as a Girl Scout, please include an additional $12 membership fee with the Summer Camp Registration Form.

After this week, you will be camp crazy. Count on activities like swimming, cooking over a fire, nature hikes, songs, skits, team sports, a challenge course, arts and crafts, and all-camp activities.

What’s it Like at Camp?

Well, camp is a bit different depending on where you go. GSMH has four resident program centers, or four camps where you can stay as you participate in the programs listed on pages 13–19 of this Camp Guide.

(Girls must have completed CIT I and grade 10 prior to attending this session) You’re ready for the final step to becoming that great leader, role model and counselor that you had as a camper. The second part of the CIT experience will build on your skills and include an internship with a unit. You will learn about scheduling, personal care, day planning, how to carry out programs, break down and teach new skills, and what to expect as a potential staff member. Get ready as we ramp up you leadership skills.

Cherokee Ridge Program Center: Cherokee Ridge is situated on 1,100 acres in Wayne County. There are three units that have screened cabins and sleep four campers each. All units have running water and latrines. Showers and flush toilets are located at the pool. Activity areas include a lake for canoeing, pool, horseback riding, and archery.

This session is two weeks, but you will not spend the weekend at the program center.

Finbrooke Program Center: Finbrooke offers a variety of outdoor experiences on 200+ acres in Christian County. The units have a variety of sleeping areas which include small cabins, perma-tents and platform tents; each sleeps four campers. Running water and a shower house with flush toilets are in each unit. Activities include a ropes course, climbing tower, zip line, archery, a pool, and canoeing on the Finley River.

Mintahama Program Center: Located just outside of Joplin, Mintahama sits on 180 acres. A 12-acre lake is used for canoeing and paddle boating. The units have a variety of sleeping areas which include platform tents, screened cabins, tree houses, and a bunk house. All units have running water and latrines. Shower facilities are located at the pool. Activities include boating, swimming, archery, and a nature center.

What Should I Bring?

You’ll receive a confirmation packet in the mail after May 1. It will include a packing list, health history form, health examination form, (if required) medications form and directions to camp. Everyone who attends camp for more than a day is required to have a health examination form completed, signed by a physician, and brought to camp on the first day of camp. You will not be able to stay if you don’t bring this with you. Ask your parents to make a doctor’s appointment for you now to avoid delays and be sure to make and keep a copy of the completed health form before turning it in.

Latonka Program Center: Latonka is located in a scenic cove on Lake Wappapello. This program center offers a variety of activities such as hiking, canoeing, paddleboating, swimming in the lake, and features a ropes course with low/high elements including a zip line. There are three established cabin units which have easy access to a shower house with flush toilets.

Sleeping cabins are screened and have lighting and ceiling fans. Each cabin sleeps up to six campers.

Registration Instructions Girl Scout summer camp registrations will be accepted on a firstcome, first-served basis and must be received by May 1, 2013.

Please complete the entire registration form, paying close attention to dates, grade levels, fees and required signatures.

• Register according to the grade level that the camper will enter for the fall 2013 school year.

• Please list a first, second, and third choice program session.

• If you are registering for multiple sessions, please make a copy of the camp registration form and complete one form for each week that your camper wishes to attend camp.

Summer Camp Registration forms must be accompanied by a $40 non-refundable* deposit. Forms may be emailed, mailed, faxed, or walked in to any Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland service center. *Deposits are only refunded if a girl cannot be placed in one of her choices, does not receive requested financial assistance, the session is cancelled by the council, in the event of a family death or emergency, or a camper’s injury or illness.

Registration Confirmation

Campers will receive a confirmation via US mail for each program session for which they are registered. Confirmations will include: • Specific session information • Health Examination*, Health History, and Medication Forms

*Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. and the American Camp Association (ACA) require that each girl who attends a summer resident camp provide a copy of a health examination, including month and year of all immunizations, conducted not more than 24 months prior to opening day of the resident camp program she is attending. Upon arrival at camp, each camper will receive a health screening. We do not allow girls with fevers or evidence of head lice to remain at camp. NOTE: If the program is a one-day unit, girls only need to bring a GSMH Health History Form to camp. No examination is required.

Girl Scout Membership Registration

Girls do not have to be registered Girl Scouts before they register for summer camp; however all girls must be registered Girl Scouts for the 2012-2013 membership year before they attend camp. If the camper is not already a registered member, include the $12 membership registration fee with the Summer Camp Registration form to register as a Girl Scout. Membership dues are non-refundable.

Girl Scout Cookie Credit

Girl Scout Cookie Credit gift cards may be used to pay for summer camp (including the deposit). Please include the cookie credit card number (including 2-digit security code) on the Summer Camp Registration form or Summer Camp Additional Payment Form. Girl Scout Cookie Credit cards are non-refundable, unless a cancellation is requested before the registration deadline or due to serious family emergency or illness verified in writing by a doctor. *Please note that Girl Scout Cookie Credit cards for the 2013 Girl Scout Cookie Program will not be mailed to girls until May 2013. These may only be used for the girl who has earned it, and may not be shared with other girls. Please contact a service center if your child wishes to pay for Girl Scout Summer Camp 2013 with a 2013 Cookie Credit card to make special arrangements.

Financial Assistance

To apply for financial assistance, please review the Financial Assistance Guidelines and submit a Program Financial Assistance Application with the Summer Camp Registration form. Financial assistance will only be granted for one session per camper.

Family Discount

Families with two or more campers attending sessions at any camp may deduct $10 from each camper’s fee whether the girls attend at the same time or not. Registrations must be submitted together to receive this discount, which is only valid for one program unit per camper, and does not apply to one-day program units.

Multi Session-Discount

We love to have campers attend multiple sessions in the same summer. We offer a multi-session discount. Deduct $10 from your second session fee. This offer is only valid for one additional session per camper, and does not apply to one-day program sessions.

Camp Buddies

Summer camp is a place to make new friends, as many girls come to camp not knowing anyone. Counselors are trained to help girls make new friends, but if girls would like to be placed in a unit with a buddy, both girls must register for the same unit, indicate their buddy choice on their registration form and submit their forms together.

Transportation

All campers must provide their own transportation to and from camp.

Changes, Cancellations and Refunds

Each program unit has a minimum number of campers required. If the minimum number of campers is not met, the program will be cancelled and the camper will be placed in her next available program unit choice. Camp registration fees, including deposit, will be refunded if a camper cannot be placed in her first, second, or third choice of program session.

In order to request a program unit or session change, parents or guardians should contact a customer data coordinator at 877-3124764 to see if the change is possible. All program session changes must be made by the camp registration deadline (May 1). Changes requested after the deadline will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Registration deposits are non-refundable unless a girl cannot be placed in one of her choices, does not receive requested financial assistance, the program unit is cancelled by the council, in the event of a family death or emergency, or a camper’s injury or illness. A doctor’s statement must accompany requests for refunds due to injury or illness that would prohibit camp attendance. In the event that a camper fails the health screening upon arrival at camp, every effort will be made to place her in a similar program unit at a later date. If this is not possible, a full refund will be granted. Every effort will be made to place a camper who misses her choice of program unit due to illness, injury, or family emergency in another program unit.

The balance of camp session fees is refunded only if written notice of cancellation is received three weeks before the camp program session starts, or if the camper is ill and a written notice of cancellation is accompanied by a statement from the camper’s attending physician.

Refunds will not be made if a camper leaves a camp session already in progress due to home-sickness, illness, behavioral issues or parental request.
