Your desire to give back can cover a wide range of interests, but through giving back, you also earn something for yourself: experiences that help you gain new skills and develop empathy for others. The key to being your best self lies in looking beyond and volunteering for causes you care about. It’s amazing to feel you are making a difference and having an impact on the world. The Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards are opportunities for you and your fellow Girl Scouts to Take Action to give back and make your community and the world a better place. 4

Breaking Bronze! 1 Complete a Junior Journey. 2 Build your team. 3 Explore your community. 4 Choose your Bronze Award project. 5 Make a plan. 6 Put your plan in motion. 7 Spread the word.

BRONZE AWARD

The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. As you and your team plan and complete your Take Action project, you’ll develop more confidence, meet new people, and have the kind of fun that happens when you work with other Girl Scouts to make a difference.

SILVER

AWARD

The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Cadette can earn. It gives you the chance to show that you are a leader who is organized, determined, and dedicated to improving your community.

Step up to Silver! 1 Complete a Cadette Journey. 2 Identify issues that you care about. 3 Build your team. 4 Explore your community. 5 Choose your Silver Award project. 6 Develop your project plan and 7 8

submit it to the council for feedback. Make a plan and put it in motion. Reflect, share your story, and celebrate.

Girl Scout Troop 30777 Harleigh, Katie, and Michelle “Our experience was very eye opening. We visited the Ronald McDonald House of Mid-Missouri in Columbia where a tour was given. We learned what families endure while away from home with sick children. It was a wonderful facility and we were blessed to pass comfort on to them with our donation of needed supplies.”

Haley, Meladee, and Emalee “Our experience brought a greater understanding of students we go to school with and adults who are homeless in our community. We donated our time collecting and helping organize clothing for an organization designed to meet the needs of families without. In addition, we raised money to help the area Ministerial Alliance with community needs. We were shocked by the amount of homelessness in our community.” “We all enjoyed spending time helping others in our community and surrounding areas.” -Girl Scout Troop 30777

GOLD AWARD

“I believe one person can make a difference and can sow the seed to lead to more and more.” -Kassy H.

Rachel L. – Kennett, MO “The project I selected for my Gold Award was the building of duck boxes for the ducks to use as homes in the new wetlands that were recently developed in my area. The most important thing I learned while completing my Gold Award is the satisfaction of hard work. It was very rewarding to accomplish a project that was out of my comfort zone. Also, I learned how important it is to manage time and to communicate with higher levels of authority. This experience will remain with me forever and has definitely built my confidence to help me in this new chapter of my life.”

6

Kassy H. – Marble Hill, MO “Thank you so much for this opportunity to spread my project even more! It’s an absolute blessing and I’m very excited. I have learned so much about myself, as well as the true need for projects like this in high schools. The support and listening ears of others is a dire need for teens when it comes to the issue of depression and suicide. I am so glad I pursued my project, I believe it truly benefited teens in my area. I believe one person can make a difference and can sow the seed to lead to more and more.”

What is the Gold Award?

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest achievement you can earn in Girl Scouting. It recognizes girls in grades 9-12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through remarkable Take Action projects that have a long lasting impact in their communities and beyond. Since 1916, girls have successfully answered the call to “Go Gold!”, an action that marks them as accomplished members of not only their communities but the world.

Torie S. – Fulton, MO “[Through my Gold Award Take Action Project] I developed many practical skills and the knowledge to advocate for others. This project put me in a small group of mostly adults who wanted to use our strengths to effectively and efficiently achieve our goal. Hopefully in the future when faced with a need in my community, I can use my skills learned in Girl Scouts to help.”

1 Claire M. – Springfield, MO ”[For my Gold Award] I gathered donations of sweatsuits and toiletries to give to victim centers and hospitals for rape victims to use after their clothes are taken for evidence. I learned how to commit to a project no matter what conflicts I may face and how to solve problems. I also learned how to be more of a leader while organizing donations and volunteers. I will take the leadership and team work skills I developed to allow for a better future.”

Ambassador Journey

Senior or Ambassador Journey

Emily H. – Neosho, MO “My Gold Award project focused on helping children that don’t have the basic necessities. I made global problems better known in my community by partnering with women in Africa to make shoes for children. The most important thing I learned is that there are more important issues going on around the world than directly around me.”

Destinations We believe that every girl deserves a chance to see the world. That’s why we developed the travel pathway—to give you opportunities to learn about new cultures and meet new people. Girls have travel opportunities through Girl Scout Destinations and our own council travel plan.

Girl Scout Destinations are travel opportunities hosted by other Girl Scout councils, that range from two days to three weeks for Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors. Through Destinations, you can visit the Grand Canyon; learn about sea turtles firsthand in Costa Rica; go Hollywood Dreamin’ to produce, direct, and film your own movie; and much more!

“Going on this Destination was an incredible experience! While the council gave me scholarship money, I had to earn the rest of the money on my own by selling Girl Scout Cookies and other fundraisers. It felt good to earn my own way.” -Molly O. Girls must apply for and be accepted to each Girl Scout Destination by GSMH and the trip host. The deadline to submit applications to GSMH is November 15 of each year. Girls can use Cookie Credit or Fall FUNds as payment, and financial assistance is available.

Equine Gymanstics is a combination of horseback riding and gymnastics! Pictured to the left, Girl Scout Senior at the time, Molly O. from Ozark, Missouri went in 2013 to Equine Gymnastics in Atlanta, Georgia hosted by Girl Scouts of Greater Atlanta. Girls spent the week learning a variety of stunts to perform on horseback.

To register for a Girl Scout Getaway, you should contact the host council or organization directly. You do not need approval from GSMH to register for a Getaway, but you will need to fill out a Troop Travel Application and be approved for travel. Cookie Credit, Fall FUNds, and Troop Bucks may be used for Getaways.

Time in nature promotes attention restoration. Spending time in nature (even just a walk in a park) has been shown to improve concentration and creative reasoning among children and adults, including those with attention deficits.

Outdoor spaces support physical play. Unlike most indoor environments, the outdoors offers open space where children are able to be messy, make noise, and move in more physically intense ways. This allows them to develop their movement capability and confidence—both of which create foundations for physically active lifestyles and general health.

Want your favorite adults to experience camp with you? Skip right to page 31 for special camp sessions just for adults and girls!

Nature provides novelty and challenge, which enhance leadership. Outdoor experiences often place girls in new physical, psychological, and social situations that motivate curiosity and foster a sense of discovery. Authentic challenges in nature (think starting a fire in the rain or negotiating a set of whitewater rapids) require girls to become more self-aware and to cooperate, communicate, and solve problems more effectively.

A NOTE TO PARENTS Girl Scout Camp Program Expectations at Camp At Girl Scout summer camp, girls develop leadership skills as they Discover themselves, Connect with nature, and Take Action with their new friends! Girl input is utilized to personalize the program activities for each week. Campers spend about half of their time participating in activities related to the theme of their camp session and the other half participating in general camp activities (swimming, hiking, etc.). Every camper will go home with a certificate, program center patch, and a Journey/badge progress report!

Camp Buddies Summer Camp is a place to make new friends, as many girls come to camp not knowing anyone. Our camp staff are trained to help girls make new friends, but if girls would like to be placed in a unit with a buddy, both girls must register for the same session, indicate their buddy choice on their registration forms, and submit their forms together.

Transportation 34

All campers must provide their own transportation to and from camp.

Campers will experience group living by sharing living quarters with other girls in a camp community. Everyone is expected to help take care of camp by dividing up the camp chores (kapers). Campers will participate in age appropriate all-camp kapers (flag ceremony, picking up litter from the ground, and prepping the dining area before and after a meal) and are expected to help clean their living quarters, unit bathrooms, and unit campsite.

Camp Staff Camp counselors are dedicated to giving campers an amazing camp experience and keeping girls safe. It is extremely important for campers to talk to their camp counselors about any concerns, worries, or needs. Communication between campers and counselors is encouraged to provide the best experience possible! All members of our staff are at least 18 years old and are selected for their maturity, enthusiasm, experience, leadership ability, compassion, and commitment in putting campers first! All of our potential staff members go through a comprehensive screening and interview process, including background and reference checks. After being hired each summer, staff members participate in an intensive, week-long training program in child development, group management, camping skills, conflict resolution, bullying prevention, CPR/ First Aid, and specialty areas. Many return year after year because we know that retaining our staff is important to your camper’s experience.

Sleeping Arrangements Girls of comparable age are organized in groups living in campsites consisting of cabins, platform tents, bunk-style quarters, and treehouses. Girl Scouts of the USA requires that staff have separate sleeping arrangements from campers. The staff are housed in a cabin or tent, etc. in close proximity of the campers. The girls we be shown where the staff will sleep, in case they need the staff at any time of the day when they are in the campsite.

Typical Day Schedule Health Care at Camp All camps meet established standards for health and safety, site maintenance, program and personnel, which are set by state and local governments and Girl Scouts of the USA. An on-site health supervisor with advanced medical training is available 24 hours a day and counselors are informed of campers’ medical history and medication needs to ensure proper first aid and medical assistance. All camp staff follows established Treatment Procedures reviewed by a doctor; the health supervisor manages camper medications, and minor camper illnesses and injuries are handled on-site following parent/guardian directions on the Health History form. Campers use sunscreen on a regular basis and are encouraged to drink plenty of water. Campers are also covered by supplemental health and accident insurance. The insurance cost is included in the camp fee.

Safety at Camp Camper drop-off and pick-up is closely monitored; campers are released only to adults listed by the parent or guardian and who show a picture ID. Once in our care, camps follow adult-to-girl supervision ratios specified by Girl Scouts’ Safety Activity Checkpoints.

Accommodating Special Needs If your camper has special needs (dietary, physical, medical, or emotional), please contact a leadership and learning specialist – outdoor program or 877312-4764 or camp@girlscoutsmoheartland.org with specific considerations in advance so we can best serve your camper.

Meals and Dietary Restrictions Campers are provided three full meals a day plus snacks! Campers staying a full week at camp will experience cooking in their unit campsite. Please indicate special dietary needs on the health history form, and please do not bring any food or drinks from home.
