Do you want to be a role model for younger Girl Scouts? Consider the Program Aide Award! Program Aide is an award that provides Girl Scout Cadettes with an opportunity to deepen their understanding of what leadership development means to them and simultaneously get excited about guiding younger girls to be leaders in their own lives! By earning the Program Aide Award, Cadettes will share their skills, test their knowledge, and try out new mentoring roles.
Sequential requirements to earn the Cadette Program Aide Award:
1
Earn One Leader in Action (LIA) Award
You can earn a LIA award by assisting a group of Girl Scout Brownies on any of their Journeys. There are three different LIA awards, one for each Journey series. Complete requirements can be found in the Brownie Leadership Journey adult guides.
2
Complete the Program Aide Training Course
3
Work Directly with Younger Girls Over Six Activity Sessions
The GSMH Program Aide Training Course teaches you basic skills and leadership styles, with specialization trainings available in outdoor skills and crafts, songs, and games. This core training may be scheduled on request! Simply contact your regional LLS-GSLE to make arrangements.*
This could be assisting girls on Journey activities, badge activities, or other sessions. Girls might work with a group at their meetings, at a day camp, or during a special council event. *To contact your regional LLS-GSLE, call 877-312-4764 or email gscouts@girlscoutsmoheartland.org.

A NOTE TO PARENTS Expectations at Camp Campers will experience group living by sharing living quarters with other girls in a camp community. Everyone is expected to help take care of camp by dividing up the camp chores (kapers). Campers will participate in age appropriate all-camp kapers (flag ceremony, picking up litter, and prepping the dining area before and after a meal) and are expected to help clean their living quarters, unit bathrooms, and unit campsite.
Camp Staff Camp counselors are dedicated to giving campers an amazing camp experience and keeping girls safe. It is extremely important for campers to talk to their camp counselors about any concerns, worries, or needs. Communication between campers and counselors is encouraged to provide the best experience possible! All members of our staff are at least 18 years old and are selected for their maturity, enthusiasm, experience, leadership ability, compassion, and commitment in putting campers first! All of our potential staff members go through a comprehensive screening and interview process, including background and reference checks. After being hired each summer, staff members participate in an intensive, week-long training program in child development, group management, camping skills, conflict resolution, bullying prevention, CPR/First Aid, and specialty areas. Many return year after year, and we know that retaining our staff is important to your camper’s experience.
Sleeping Arrangements Girls of comparable age are organized in groups living in campsites consisting of cabins, platform tents, bunk-style quarters, and tree houses. Girl Scouts of the USA requires that staff have separate sleeping arrangements from campers. The staff are housed in a cabin or tent, etc. in close proximity of the campers. The girls we be shown where the staff will sleep, in case they need the staff at any time of the day when they are in the campsite.
32
Health Care at Camp
Communication
All camps meet established standards for health and safety, site maintenance, program and personnel, which are set by state and local governments and Girl Scouts of the USA. An on-site health supervisor with advanced medical training is available 24 hours a day and counselors are informed of campers’ medical history and medication needs to ensure proper first aid and medical assistance. All camp staff follows established Treatment Procedures reviewed by a doctor; the health supervisor manages camper medications; and minor camper illnesses and injuries are handled on-site following parent/guardian directions on the Health History form. Campers use sunscreen on a regular basis and are encouraged to drink plenty of water. Campers are also covered by supplemental health and accident insurance. The insurance cost is included in the camp fee.
Cell Phones. Cell phones are not allowed at any of our camps. Any cell phone brought to camp will be secured in the camp office until the camper returns home. Please help us enforce this policy by ensuring that your camper does not bring a cell phone to camp. We are not responsible for lost, stolen, or damaged phones.
Safety at Camp Camper drop-off and pick-up is closely monitored; campers are released only to adults listed by the parent or guardian and who show a picture ID. Once in our care, camps follow adult-to-girl supervision ratios specified by Girl Scouts’ Safety Activity Checkpoints.
Accommodating Special Needs If your camper has special needs (dietary, physical, medical, or emotional), please contact the leadership and learning specialist – outdoor program or 877-312-4764 x1122 or camp@girlscoutsmoheartland.org with specific considerations in advance so we can best serve your camper.
Meals and Dietary Restrictions Campers are provided three full meals a day plus snacks! Campers staying a full week at camp will experience cooking in their unit campsite. Please indicate special dietary needs on the Health History form, and please do not bring any food or drinks from home.
Girl Scout Camp Program At Girl Scout summer camp, girls develop leadership skills as they Discover themselves, Connect with nature, and Take Action with their new friends! Girl input is utilized to personalize the program activities for each week. Campers spend about half of their time participating in activities related to the theme of their camp session and the other half participating in general camp activities (swimming, hiking, etc.). Every camper will go home with a certificate, program center patch, and a Journey/badge progress report!
Phone Calls. Campers are not permitted to make phone calls while at camp. If any concerns or questions arise during your camper’s experience, a member of our staff will call you. Mail. Letters are the best form of communication with your camper during camp. To ensure that your camper receives a letter each day, bring letters from home to check-in. Include pre-addressed and stamped envelopes for your camper to write back!
Camp Buddies Summer camp is a place to make new friends, as many girls come to camp not knowing anyone. Our camp staff are trained to help girls make new friends, but if girls would like to be placed in a unit with a buddy, both girls must register for the same session, indicate their buddy choice on their registration forms, and submit their forms together.
Transportation All campers must provide their own transportation to and from camp.
