Bring Her Indoor Passions to Life Outdoors! Not every girl has a natural love of hiking, climbing, and camping. Maybe your girl is more the indoor type, preferring to explore her interests with all the comforts of home. That’s great! She’s interested, she’s engaged, and she’s learning and growing. But because girls can benefit so much by getting outside and exploring nature, wouldn’t it be great if she took her indoor interests outdoors? That way, she can enjoy her favorite activities with the added benefit of getting outside to broaden and enrich her experiences. Inspire her! Try one of these suggestions, suited for every type of girl, to infuse the natural world into her traditionally inside pursuits: Avid reader? Stretch out under a tree on a blanket! There’s something about being outside in that big, welcoming, and unrestricted space that lets her experience whatever she’s reading in a fuller, more inspiring way.

Animal lover? She already can’t get enough of dogs and cats. So consider shaking things up, and have her study ants, butterflies, frogs, birds, whatever! Show her how to observe animals’ behavior and enjoy their worlds.

Sporty type? Get her away from the indoor track and into nature! How about trail running? A family hike? Mixing up exercises challenges the body and muscle memory, as well as benefits the mind.

Show-stopper? If all the world’s a stage, why not set up makeshift shows in the backyard or schoolyard? Does she love dance? Puppets? Skits? Magic? Let her imagination—and energy—run loose!

Social butterfly? Play dates and hangouts don’t need to be indoors at a friend’s or at the pizza place. Help her organize a potluck picnic with friends, maybe even with an outdoor theme! STEM-y girl? Help her get out of the lab and into nature. Show her how she can test the purity of local water supplies. How about observing and recording the movement of the sun, moon, and stars? Science and nature are all around us, all the time!

Do you recognize your girl in this list? Excellent! Inspiring her to explore in new and different ways is as simple as saying, “Let’s try doing this outside!” Your girl’s outdoor experiences don’t need to be elaborate or time-consuming—a simple, daily dose of nature will make a real difference in her life.

Get ready. Get set. Get outside! 10

Fresh air. We all need it sometimes, but it’s especially important when we’re young. That’s why outdoor experiences have been a huge part of Girl Scouts since Juliette Gordon Low took girls outside to hike, play basketball, and get active more than a century ago. She knew that experiencing the glory of nature—the mountains, the lakes, the oceans, the forests all around us—instills something special in girls. Today, research confirms what we’ve always known at Girl Scouts. Outdoor experiences are more than fun—they’re a guaranteed way to help girls thrive. Help us turn the tide. Take our pledge to connect more girls to outdoor experiences that will transform their world as they grow.

Every girl deserves to experience the outdoors.

Move Out

Look Out Share past experiences in the outdoors. Talk about favorite outdoor places and why they’re special. Wonder what else can be seen in the outdoors.

Get Girls Outside with the Volunteer Toolkit! Are you or your girls excited about going outdoors? Maybe they’d like to get closer to nature, go on a hike, or plan a camping trip? Let’s make it happen—Girl Scouts is dedicated to getting girls outside! The outdoors are important to us, and Girl Scouts of the USA made some enhancements to the Volunteer Toolkit (VTK) to help volunteers and girls get outdoors as they earn badges!

What are these new VTK “enhancements?” Several Daisy, Brownie, and Junior activities have been updated with options for taking a troop activity outside. And don’t worry — if the weather won’t cooperate on your meeting day, you can toggle back to the indoor version of the meeting plan! The purpose of these updates is to provide easy pre-organized activities that volunteers can do with their girls outdoors.

Why move a meeting outside? Taking activities outside is a crucial first step that lets girl gain confidence and familiarity with the outdoors so they can progress to more adventurous and challenging outdoor activities as they advance through Girl Scouting. Just as they had to learn to crawl before they could run, girls must become comfortable spending an hour outdoors before they can move on to camp-outs, canoe trips, and backpacking weekends. These activities aim to help the girls and their leaders begin their outdoor adventures in short but fun ways.

Get Girls Outside with skill building videos! Thanks to a grant from the Elliott Wildlife Values Project, GSUSA created several videos on outdoor activities for volunteers to supplement what they learn in our outdoor trainings. There are now eight outdoor skill-building videos covering topics ranging from setting up a campsite to cooking outdoors to learning new songs and games—all to help volunteers like you plan your oudoor adventures! What’s more, you can tap into Venture Out!, a unique resource that makes the outdoor experience more girl-led and offers insight so you feel confident engaging girls in the outdoors. These videos can be viewed on the Resource tab of the Volunteer Toolkit.

What badges and petals have new outdoor options? Daisy Petals: Lupe, Clover Brownie Badges: Making Games, Snacks, Senses, First Aid Junior Badges: First Aid, Simple Meals, Detective, Staying Fit Over the summer, GSUSA updated the VTK with Outdoor badge work for Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors. These badges will have the same setup and usability as the Daisy, Brownie, and Junior badges! In your VTK, follow these directions to see a detailed description of Get Girls Outside. Select the title of the activity in the Meeting Agenda list where a tree appears. In the Agenda pop-up model, select the Get Girls Outside! radio button and hit “save” to add it to your meeting plan. You will know that the Get Girls Outside! activity has been added to your Meeting Plan when the tree is green in the Meeting Plan and Year Plan. Here’s a snapshot of what adding outdoor activities to the Brownie Senses badge looks like:

Don’t Have Internet Access Outdoors? No Problem! Just make sure to either download the meeting to your smartphone or tablet, or print a copy before you head off to your meeting. A Girl Scout is always prepared, so plan ahead and print the indoor activity as well, so you can ensure girls can finish their badge work rain or shine. volunteer 411 • fall/winter 2018

Girl-Led

g n i n n a l p

Girls Scouting has always been designed to be girl-led. In the early days of Girl Scouting, Juliette Gordon Low would say, “Let’s ask the girls.” What does girl-led look like and how can you make it happen in your troop? Girl-led means letting girls take the lead and make the decisions as much as possible. Why is it important for your troop to be Girl-led? • When girls get to make the decisions about what their troop is doing, they are more engaged, get more out of their Girl Scout experience, have more fun, and are more likely to continue in Girl Scouts. • When girls get to make the decision, they feel empowered. • Helping lead their troop’s direction not only teaches girls leadership skills, it prepares them to become active participants in their communities.

18

volunteer 411 • fall/winter 2018

Depending on the age of your girls, girl-led can look a little different. If you let your Daisy troop make all the decisions, you might be riding ponies to Disneyland at every meeting! But even Daisies can make simple decisions. For example, where do they want to go on their field trip to learn about community helpers: the police

station or the fire station? As the girls get older, you can start letting them do more and more of the planning. By the time girls are Seniors or Ambassadors, they should be doing most or all of the planning—and troop leaders should be there to advise them and keep them safe.

— d te ar st ar ye p oo tr w ne r u yo g Gettin —the girl-led way. Rather than planning your entire troop year before your first meeting, use your first meeting for the girls to plan their troop year.

What You Need • Copies of the badges and Journeys available for their grade level (check out the new badges on page 16-17!) or laptops and tablets with access to the Volunteer Toolkit • Paper, pens, pencils • Poster board, dry erase board, or a big piece of paper

What To Do 1. Explain to your girls that they are going to pick what badges and Journeys they will be working on for the Girl Scout year. 2. Give the girls copies of the badges and Journeys and some time to look at them. Have them write down the ones that interest them most. 3. Next, tell the girls they need to narrow down their list to their favorite badges. Depending on how many meetings your troop will have and if you will also be working on a Journey, tell girls how many badges they can choose. 4. Ask each girl to share her top pick. Ask an adult to record their choices on a poster/erase board. (Pro Tip: If you have a large troop you could collect their votes and tally them while they are doing a different activity). 5. If you told the girls to pick five badges, you would then determine which five badges were most popular. (Pro Tip: If you have a tie, have girls vote to break it.) 6. Chances are there will be badges voted on that not everyone wanted to do. Let the girls know they can earn additional badges on their own and let them know where to find them. There you have it—a year’s worth of activities decided on by your girls. That’s an example of what girl-led looks like!

Here are some ways to help with the girl-led process. • Ask the girls questions, rather than providing answers. • Help the girls think through a decision rather than deciding for them. • Guide, rather than lead. • Advise, rather than judge. More Pro Tips • If you don’t want to plan for an entire year at once, you can do this activity twice a year. • Girl-led doesn’t have to stop here! Girls can also choose what activities they want to do to earn the badges or Journeys and what field trips or events they want to attend.

By participating in this program, troops get a head start on funding their activities for the year! The 2018 Fall Product Program will run November 1-25. Being involved in the Fall Product Program provides an important ingredient for leadership by ensuring girls are learning five important life skills!

Goal Setting

Decision Making Business Ethics

In addition to life skills, girls earn fun and exciting recognitions! We offer flexible ways to participate. Girls can take orders in person or customers can order online. Items include nuts, candy, magazines, tumblers, and—NEW this year— candles! Items will be ready for winter gift giving.

celebrate Founders Day

Let’s celebrate the birth of our founder Juliette Gordon Low! The first Girl Scout holiday of the membership year is Founder’s Day. This special holiday celebrates the founder of Girl Scouting, Juliette Gordon Low, and falls on her birthday, October 31. Juliette was an amazing woman and this is the perfect way to teach girls about her interesting life. You can celebrate on a small scale with just your troop or in a grand way with a service unit event!

Day of Service Juliette believed in helping others and wanted every Girl Scout to be of service to her community. Honor her with a day of service. Your troop or service unit could volunteer at a food pantry or animal shelter; you could clean up a park or your meeting place; or collect food or personal hygiene items to donate to a local pantry or shelter.

38

volunteer 411 • fall/winter 2018

Have a Tea Party Juliette believed that every girl should know how to conduct themselves at a tea party. When she was a Girl Guide Leader in Scotland, she would serve tea at her meetings to teach her girls the customs of afternoon tea. At your tea party you can teach girls table manners, make fancy hats, hear stories about Juliette Low, and of course enjoy tea and treats!

Throw a Birthday Party Throw a party for Juliette with games and activities that she would have enjoyed!

1

Play old-fashioned games such as: hopscotch, marbles, leapfrog, 20 questions, or charades.

2

Serve popcorn—Juliette’s favorite party snack.

3

As a girl, Juliette enjoyed sketching, painting, and starring in plays. Girls could do an art project or put on skits.

4

Juliette considered her special talent to be standing on her head. Every year on her birthday, even as an adult, she would stand on her head just to prove she could still do it. See how many girls can stand on their head! Make sure to be in a safe space and have an adult spotter for each girl.

SWAPS!

Make New Friends Pin

A great activity for any event or troop meeting is making SWAPS— “special whatchamacallits affectionately pinned somewhere.” These fun keepsakes are a Girl Scout tradition. They are small, represent something about you or the event you are attending, and they are usually attached to a safety pin. Try this example!

Instructions: Slide alternating

Games Galore! Juliette liked to play games, and Kim’s Game is a favorite of Girl Scouts. Juliette Low learned to play it from Rudyard Kipling, author of the “Jungle Book” and the story “Kim.” In that story, Kim plays the game to learn to be a better spy. You can play it to practice looking

Donations

Troop Finances

Girl Scouts may not raise funds on behalf of other organizations, though they may choose to contribute troop funds to service projects and initiatives of their choice. Troops may also make donations, either material or monetary, to organizations of their choice. To receive donations, troop leaders should contact our Resource Development department.

Troops and girls should be learning to budget in a responsible and sustainable way. That means each troop should be working to minimize extra costs to themselves and to families. Troop members and families may vote to utilize troop proceeds for volunteers’ membership dues, training fees, program chaperone fees, or books. However, troop funds may never be utilized for volunteers’ personal expenses such as fuel and apparel.

Troop MoneyEarning Projects The Girl Scout program is intended to be self-sufficient. All troops are encouraged to participate in the Fall Product Program and Girl Scout Cookie Program to help provide troop funding. Because Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland, Inc. is the holder of a non-profit 501(c) (3) status, all additional troop money-earning activities must be pre-approved by our Resource Development department. Complete guidelines and the Troop MoneyEarning Activity Application are available on our website.

Troop income earned through troop dues collection, product program, and money-earning activities should be utilized to serve all girls and the troop at large. Troop funds are shared by all members of the troop, and cannot be given directly to, earmarked, or designated for specific girls in dollar or percentage amounts. For further guidance on how to budget troop funds, please refer to the Troop Financial Guidelines on our website. It is a good idea to be transparent with families about troop funds and their usage throughout the year. We strongly encourage troop leaders to: • provide receipts for parents whenever money is exchanged. • provide parents with regular financial updates or notification of how and when troop funds are spent. • allow parents to audit the troop checkbook and/or the annual Troop Financial Report. • keep receipts for all purchases. • limit ATM/cash withdrawals for troop expenses, and keep receipts to document cash purchases for the troop.

Troop Financial Reports All troops and service units are required to submit a Financial Report by October 1. This report must be verified and signed by three unrelated adults and submitted by the deadline. Report forms are available on our website.

Financial Assistance Financial assistance application forms are available on our website. A separate application must be submitted for each applicant; troop applications are not accepted. Financial assistance is reserved for those who demonstrate need; it is not a substitute for troop funds or proceeds. Financial assistance is available for the following: Girls: membership dues; handbooks; uniform pieces; GSMH program events, trips, and camp; Girl Scout Destinations. Adults: membership dues; Journey handbooks; GSMH program events and trips; volunteer trainings.

Girl Scout adult-to-girl ratios show the minimum number of adults needed to supervise a specific number of girls at each Girl Scout grade level. These ratios ensure the safety of girls and adults at Girl Scout activities. For example, if one adult has to respond to an emergency, a second adult is always on hand for the remaining girls. The adults counted in these safety ratios must be approved* volunteers who are unrelated to each other (i.e., not siblings, spouses, parents, significant others, etc.) and are at least 18 years old. At least one adult at all activities must be an approved* female volunteer. Use this handy chart to identify how many adults you need for the number of girls participating in your troop or activity!

Council Program Events

Driving Safety

All troops attending council events must meet required adult-togirl ratios and have at least one approved* female volunteer in attendance. Adult chaperones should not exceed the number of girls registered per troop unless the event is designated as a family event.

Any adult who drives a vehicle with girls other than her/his own daughter(s) during a council event must be an approved* volunteer, at least 21 years of age, and a registered member. If a driver is male, there must be an approved* female volunteer also traveling with the group.

Safety Activity Checkpoints Most activities outside of regular troop meetings have additional safety guidelines. Please refer to the Safety Activity Checkpoints on our website before conducting each activity.

Troop Meetings All troops must have at least two approved* volunteers at meetings, with at least one being female.

First Aiders A first aider is recommended for every troop, and is required for many Girl Scout activities. The Safety Activity Checkpoints will tell you if a first aider is required. Some medical professionals automatically qualify as first aiders. GSMH offers CPR and First Aid trainings in all regions throughout the year.

*An approved volunteer is an adult who has completed a volunteer application and background check, received notice of appointment from GSMH, and is a currently-registered Girl Scout member. All volunteers must complete an updated background check at least every three years.

Specialized Program Facilitators GSMH hires certified program facilitators for adventure and specialized activities including: horse-riding, swimming, high ropes, low ropes, archery, and small craft water activities. If your troop or service unit plans to engage in any of these activities at a GSMH program center, please contact GSMH so that we can connect you with an appropriate council facilitator. Go to girlscoutsmoheartland.org to check it out! When will registration be available through Doubleknot? Doubleknot is available now! It launched earlier this year. How do I access Doubleknot? You can log on to Doubleknot by clicking the “Event Registration” link in the upper right corner of our homepage on www.girlscoutsmoheartland.org.

Who can register via Doubleknot? Troop Leaders, Co-Leaders, Adults, and Guardians will be able to register themselves and any girls in their household or troop for programs and events. How do I log on to Doubleknot? We sent your User ID and Password via email. Don’t see it? Contact us to reset it.

What if I forget my password? Doubleknot has a handy “Forgot Password” feature that allows you to reset it!

Cancellations Events and trainings may be canceled if the required minimum number of participants is not met, or in cases of severe weather. If the event/training is canceled or moved to a new location, only those registered will be notified. If you must cancel or make changes to your registration information after you have submitted your forms, please contact us prior to the final registration deadline.

What payment forms will be accepted? We’re glad you asked! An exciting feature of Doubleknot—you’re able to pay with Troop Bucks and Cookie Credit (along with a traditional credit/ debit card). What if I need help or have questions? That’s easy! Your customer care team is only a phone call or email away.

Tagalongs Siblings and children not registered for program events and trainings are considered “tagalongs.” Tagalongs are not permitted to participate in events. If the parent/guardian does not provide appropriate supervision, or the child causes a distraction or safety issue, the parent and child will be asked to leave the event site. Tagalongs are not permitted at council-sponsored overnight events, travel, or camp. The non-member insurance provided through Mutual of Omaha does not cover tagalongs for events intended for Girl Scout members. Therefore, GSMH is not liable for these individuals.
