The new Girl Scout year is here! Volunteers and girls are ready to continue their Girl Scout adventure. And, Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland is ready to help you do just that. As everyone knows, Girl Scouting happens for our girls primarily at the local level—in their troops and service units. Volunteers work with girls to help them build leadership skills, learn to give back to their communities and have fun! GSMH is committed to being there to help you. We are working diligently to build our council capacity to provide support, training, and ideas for volunteers at the troop and service unit levels. As you look through this 411, you’ll find enhanced resources for local programming and more training opportunities. Additionally, you will find information on bigger events, including one large signature event scheduled for 2013-2014 in the central region. Why bigger events? Because we listened! Both girls and adults have asked for larger events like the Believe in Girls Expo and the Camporee which were held in 2012. So we are shifting some of our resources to offer more excitement than the smaller events we have offered in the past. Don’t worry, there will still be some old favorites, but we hope you will give some of the new events a try! It will be a great opportunity for girls to meet other girls from across the council. It’s going to be another great year of Girl Scouting. The girls are excited and ready to get going. And so is GSMH! We are ready to partner with you to make it a fun, exciting year for the girls! Girls today are busy and some don’t have the time or interest to be in a troop. That’s why there are so many more ways to be a Girl Scout! They’re called Pathways and are the different ways girls can participate in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. At GSMH there are five: Meeting regularly, girls can share amazing experiences, learn to make a difference in the community, and have lots of fun!
Most girls have more than one passion. Maybe archery and theater are your Girl Scout’s passions. Or horses, storytelling, and the environment. Girls can choose events centered on activities that interest them most.
Everything’s more fun when you’re sharing it with others who love the same things. Our series events let girls explore interests together in a way that fits their schedules.
Girl Scouts are going places. Whether it’s a trip across town or around the world, the adventure will stay with them forever.
Know a girl who loves learning about the environment? Or who wants to hike? Ride horses? Canoe? Girls can choose this pathway by attending resident camp in the summer or by participating in outdoor programs during the rest of the year.

A Girl Scout troop is a great way for girls to experience Girl Scouts with a group of friends or to make new friends! Girl Scout troops participate in a variety of fun activities while learning new skills. Girls in a troop can earn badges, go to amazing council and local events together, complete Girl Scout Journeys, travel locally, regionally or nationally, and participate in service projects to make the world a better place. Girl Scout troops don’t all have to look the same—it's your troop, so customize it! Map out the year to fit your schedule and your girls’ interests and have fun with it!
When you hear the word “journey” what comes to mind? Fun, adventure, and the path to a destination? That is exactly how you should think about the Girl Scout Journey Books—they lead girls on a path full of fun and adventure, and the destination is leadership! The Girl Scout Journeys put the elements of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience into a handy package to make sure girls are getting all of the experiences they need to gain leadership skills. Journeys unfold through a sequence of activities and discussions that add up to one big adventure! No matter how much time girls spend on a journey, the whole is always greater than the sum of any single part.
• Stories, quizzes, games, amazing facts, and cool discoveries • Space to collect ideas, memories, and mementos • Reflections and questions to get girls thinking about their own lives and how they fit into the world around them • Team-building experiences that foster a sense of belonging
• An overview of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience • The Journey awards and how they tie to the national outcomes • Samples and step-by-step meeting plans for the Journey • Ideas for games, crafts, and snacks that tie-in to the Journey’s theme
Need help incorporating a Journey into your troop year? Alongside earning badges, taking field trips, attending council-sponsored events, and, of course, participating in the Girl Scout Cookie Program, a year of Girl Scouts can really fill up! Our sister Girl Scouts at the Eastern Pennsylvania Council have created a fun and colorful sheet to help weave Journeys and all of the other things your girls want to do into the Girl Scout year. Just go to gsep.org, click on the “Volunteers” link, and then “Journey Tool Kit.” Print out the “Journey Map,” and start planning! Even better yet—take it to your troop meeting and turn it into a game for your girls to plan their troop year. 14
• Each Journey is designed to be earned in 6–12 sessions. Do they have to be completed in consecutive weeks? No. You might take a break to work on some aspects of the Girl Scout Cookie Program or to earn some skill-building badges, but then you come back to work on your Journey. It might take all year to complete a Journey, but that’s OK. • Do girls need to read their Journey book page-by-page at troop meetings? No. The books are full of great stories and cool pictures, but if they sit and read them page-by-page it will feel like school! Instead use your “How to Guide” to plan activities, games, discussions, and crafts to follow the path of the Journey. You can then have your girls use the Journey books for the journaling or quizzes or to read interesting stories. Girl Scout Dai sies and Brownies can also enjoy reading along and looking at the pictures in their Journey books. • Will the girls earn awards while working on their Journey? Yes. Girl Scout Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, and Cadettes earn three awards with each Journey. Seniors and Ambassadors earn one award and they can receive it as a patch or pin. • Are there other badges troops can earn while on their Journey? Yes. Each Journey has five skill-building badges that coordinate with the topics of that Journey. Girls can choose to earn one of them, all five, or none at all—it’s up to them. The skill-building badge sets are sold separately. Girls may also work on any skill-building badge while on their Journey. • Can I customize my Journey? Absolutely! You can customize your Journey by adding field trips that relate or invite guest speakers to talk to your troop; or instead of just focusing on your Journey at troop meetings, you could plan an overnight or day-long event to work on your Journey. If you find there is an activity that won’t work exactly as written for your troop or community, feel free to adapt it as long as you keep the intention of the activity intact. • Does my troop have to do a Journey? Girl Scout Journeys are half of the Girl Scout National Program Portfo lio and the other half is the skill-building badges. If your girls don’t do a Girl Scout Journey, they are not get- ting the opportunity to gain all of the skills necessary to be a leader. The Journeys teach girls leadership while the badges teach girls a specific skill. When you put the two together you have created a well-rounded Girl Scout Leadership Experience. In addition, completion of a program level Journey is a requirement for girls to earn the Girl Scout Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards.
If you find you still have questions or need help understanding the Girl Scout Journeys, call your region’s leadership and learning specialist who specializes in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. These are the LLSs who have “GSLE” after their title. They’ll be glad you asked and glad to help!
Every Girl Deserves Her Own!
“I’ve heard our CEO, Anne Soots, (who has been in Girl Scouts since childhood) talk about how when she was a girl in Girl Scouting, she had her own book. She wrote her name in it, made notes, and cherished it because it was hers. Hearing her story made me think about our girls today and how important it is for them to have their own books. Girl Scout books show girls they belong to a big sisterhood. They teach girls Girl Scout traditions and encourage them to create new ones! They give girls a personal connection to Girl Scouting with space to write down their own ideas and accomplishments. They show girls what’s special about Girl Scouting at their level—and what exciting things are in store at the next level. And just as our CEO has shared, they become a keepsake for girls and their families that captures what they learned and the fun they had as they grew up in Girl Scouting.” —Kaye Kissee, GSMH Retail Manager 15
Sometimes life is just plain busy, yet you want to provide quality programs for your girls. Or maybe girls have expressed interest in a topic you don’t know much about … either way Perfectly Effortless Programs (PEPs) can come to the rescue! A PEP is a curriculum packet written for you and your girls to explore topics together. Physical supplies for the activities are not provided, but each packet includes a handy supply list and ways to further explore the topic if girls choose to do so. Please contact your regional leadership and learning specialist to request a PEP. Unlike Program Box Kits, PEPs do not need to be returned. We can email them for free, or mail them to you for a small postal fee. Global Action Award: Did you know you have sisters all around the world? Girl Scout and Girl Guide sisters! Learn what the world is like for them, and what issues affect girls and women around the globe. Poverty, health, sanitation issues, and education all impact a woman’s opportunities in life. Activities are available for three degrees of exploration at all age levels. Go Fish Girls!: Introduce your Girl Scouts to the exciting sport of fishing–a sport they’ll never outgrow! During the program, girls will be instructed on various fishing topics. Topics include water safety, fish identification, getting to know fishing gear, bait and lure options, fish CPR (catch, photo, and release), and land and water conservation. 16
Mathtastic: This program is designed to make girls more comfortable and excited about math. Did you know that we use math every day? When we count money, measure height and weight, or tell time, we are using math. For Girl Scout Daisies, Brownies, Juniors, and Cadettes. Ceremonies are long-held traditions in Girl Scouts and a great way to commemorate important moments in a Girl Scout’s career. Ceremonies have three basic parts. 1. Opening: welcome guests, state the purpose, and set the mood 2. Main Part: develop the theme or idea of the ceremony with dialogue, poetry, songs, candle-lighting, or other activities 3. Closing: thank guests and offer closure through a friendship circle, song, or other activity
Common Girl Scout Ceremonies Investiture/Rededication An investiture ceremony is planned to welcome new girls and adults when they join Girl Scouts for the first time. Common traditions for this ceremony include stating the Girl Scout Promise and Law, singing, presenting the Girl Scout membership pin, and doing the Girl Scout handshake. Rededication is a very similar ceremony, except it is for girls and adults who have been invested to reaffirm their belief in the Girl Scout Promise and Law. To take the guess-work out of these ceremonies, Investiture/Rededication kits are available for checkout at all GSMH service centers. Bridging Ceremony Bridging ceremonies represent a girl’s growth and development from one level of Girl Scouts to another. The “bridge” or crossing over into the new program level can be symbolized in different ways–indoors or outdoors, perhaps at a local park with a wooden bridge. Consider inviting a sister troop at the next Girl Scout age level to assist. Ideas for bridging ceremonies can be found in The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting. Flag Ceremony A flag ceremony is a great way of showing love, pride, and respect for one’s country or state. They are often used to open other ceremonies and can also be a nice way to begin troop meetings or other Girl Scout events. The Pledge of Allegiance in the presence of the flag is always included in this ceremony; reciting the Girl Scout Promise and Law or singing a patriotic or Girl Scout song may also be included. Flag ceremonies often use a color guard–a guard of honor for the flag. They consist of one color bearer and two or more guards on each side who ensure that the flag does not touch the ground or become entangled. Materials for flag ceremonies are available for check out at all GSMH service centers. A kit with information about color guard positions, responsibilities, scripts, instruction on flag folding and proper etiquette, history, and sample flag ceremonies is available for checkout at all GSMH service centers. Other Ceremonies Additional ceremonies that your troop may choose to learn about include: • Opening/Closing Ceremonies (at meetings or events) • Pinning Ceremony (for grade-level Girl Scout pins) • Court of Awards (to celebrate achievement) • Fly-Up (for girls bridging from Brownies to Juniors) • Girl Scouts’ Own (for exploration of the girls’ choosing) For more information on these and other ceremonies, visit www.girlscouts.org. 33
1/3 Rule of Thumb
from Girl Scouts Spirit of Nebraska, New Leader Training Troop income earned through troop dues collection, product program, and money earning activities should be helping to fund girls’ Girl Scout experience. A good rule of thumb to follow is a 1/3 rule. Troops and girls should be learning to budget in a responsible and sustainable way. That means each troop should be working to minimize extra costs to themselves and to families. • 1/3 of funds help cover costs of badges, registrations for the following year, and uniform pieces. All girls should have an opportunity to have a membership paid in full or part by their troop, even if they decide not to join the troop the following year. • 1/3 covers field trips, meeting supplies, and ceremonies—that’s right, only 1/3. Girls should be learning to use their resources wisely and learning the value of saving up for big trips and ideas. • 1/3 for unexpected expenses (like a family who needs financial assistance, or an amazing opportunity that suddenly comes up), and larger expenses (like travel and take action projects).
Troop Money-Earning Projects
The Girl Scout program is intended to be a self-sufficient one. Although most troops find that the Girl Scout product programs provide adequate funds to support troop costs such as membership dues, uniforms, books, service projects, and badge activities, troops may elect to conduct additional money-earning activities during the year. Because Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland, Inc. is the holder of a non-profit 501(c)(3) status, all troop money-earning projects (except the council-sponsored fall product program and Girl Scout Cookie Program) must be pre-approved by our resource development department. Complete guidelines and the Troop Money-Earning Project Application are available on your Volunteer Resources CD and our website. *Note: Girl Scouts may not raise funds on behalf of other organizations, though they may choose to contribute troop funds to service projects and initiatives of their choice.
Financial Assistance
To help ensure that everyone interested may participate in Girl Scouts, financial assistance is available for national membership dues (girls and adults), handbooks and uniforms (for girls), GSMH program events, summer camp, Girl Scout destinations, and volunteer trainings for adults. Financial assistance is reserved for those who demonstrate need; it is not a substitute for troop funds or product program proceeds. Financial Assistance Application forms are available on your Volunteer Resources CD and our website. Each applicant must submit a separate application; troop applications are not accepted. 34

Zombie Survival Day
There are all kinds of emergencies out there that we can prepare for. Our catchy title, Zombie Survival, is just code for emergency preparedness. Our goal is to teach girls a thing or two about how to prepare for a real emergency. So, girls will come out and test their survival skills to see if they would have what it takes to resist and defeat a zombie army! Girls will have a chance to try their hand at tasks like finding and creating shelter, identifying edible plants, and collecting and guarding supplies.
Develop additional survival skills such as self-defense, archery, water filtering, camouflage course navigation and, most importantly, rallying and leading other survivors to safety and creating an organized, safe new community. Girls: bring your friends—if you want ‘em to survive!—and get ready to test your bravery, brains, strength, and creativity as you practice for the Girl Scout emergency! When a Girl Scout sells cookies or fall product, she's building a lifetime of skills and confidence. She learns goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics—aspects essential to leadership, to success, and to life. She’s building real-world skills and supporting her Girl Scout activities for the year when she earns Girl Scout Cookie Credit. With Cookie Credit she can pay her own way for things such as attending camp, traveling near and far, participating in council events, registering for annual membership, and more.
A lot of people wonder how much of the Girl Scout Cookie Program proceeds help girls. We’re happy to report that 100% of the proceeds—that’s about 3/4 of what customers pay for a box of cookies—benefit girls!

Then participate in the 2014 GSMH Council-Wide Service Project: The P.A.W.S. Project: Pets Are Worth Supporting. All Girl Scouts are invited to help the animal shelter of their choice by collecting dog or cat food, paper towels, or newspapers. This project runs from April 4-12, 2014 and can be completed in five simple steps. GSMH will provide bags for Girl Scouts to distribute to friends, neighbors, and community members for them to place donations in. Return a week later to collect the donations and donate the items to the animal shelter of your choice. Complete a P.A.W.S. Project Report and submit to GSMH to receive the 2014 Council-Wide Service Project Patch.
Here’s how to participate:
1. Receive your collection bags from GSMH in February and March. 2. Distribute bags to friends, neighbors and community members the weekend of
April 4-6, 2014. Girls should not place The P.A.W.S. Project bags in or tie them to mailboxes: this is prohibited by the US Postal Service.
3. Collect filled bags on April 12, 2014. Only collect from residences where bags are left outside. Girls should not knock on doors.
4. Distribute collected items to the local animal shelter of your choice. 5. Complete a P.A.W.S. Project Report and return it to GSMH to receive
a FREE patch for each Girl Scout who participated!

Are your Girl Scouts into camping? Do they love seeing what’s around the bend, over the hill, or down the stream? Are you interested in helping them check out as many of Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland’s outdoor program centers as possible? We have a special multi-segment patch featuring five of our program centers! All four of GSMH’s resident camps are featured in this patch program, along with Silver Meadows Program Center in Boone County. We’ve got some great places for outdoor fun, including Cherokee Ridge and Latonka Program Centers in Wayne County, Mintahama Program Center in Newton County and Finbrooke Program Center in Christian County. Come check them out while you complete this patch program!
Requirements for each segment:
1. Spend the night. This can be part of a troop camping, council event or summer resident camp experience. 2. Name three activities that you can do at this program center. 3. Name three buildings, sites or paths at this program center. 4. Know where the emergency shelters are in case of bad weather. 5. Pick up five pieces of litter and properly dispose of them. 6. Identify and find one type of tree found on this program center’s grounds. That’s it! It really is simple, so get out there and check out what our program centers have to offer! Once you have completed all of the requirements, you can purchase the patch in one of the GSMH retail shops.
This program will help you learn more Girl Scout songs, and encourage your troop to include more singing in its group activities! The first year that you participate, you will be recognized with a patch and a musical note. For each year that you participate after that, you will receive another musical note to add to your patch! You can purchase these in one of the GSMH retail shops. There are five songs each year. One of each of the following: Traditional Girl Scout • Folk/International or USA • Grace • Round • Fun CDs of SING Patch Program songs will be available at all of the service center shops. Volunteers should bring a blank CD to their nearest service center and it will be replaced with a SING Patch Program CD.
SING Patch Requirements:
1. Learn the five songs chosen for the Council SING Patch Program. 2. Teach at least three of the songs to a group of younger girls, or sing the songs during a program for a community group, club or residents of a care center. 3. Incorporate at least three of the songs into your group’s Girl Scout activities. (i.e. opening and/or closing of group meetings, Thinking Day or Girl scout Week Celebration, campfire or other outdoor activity, bridging and/or Court of Awards ceremony, investiture/rededication ceremony, cookout or group dinner). 4. Learn the sign language interpretation for one of the five Patch Program songs or make up actions for one of the songs. 59
Patch a Month Program–new in 2014!
Looking for exciting programming to do on the local level with your troop? Look for a new Patch Program to come out each month in the 2014 Girl Scout year! Each month a new patch program will be posted on the council website. They will be full of meeting activities, games, and badge links based on a different theme each month. Starting in October, be on the lookout for these fabulous opportunities that await your troop.
When preparing for any activity with girls, start by reading the Girl Scout Safety Activity Checkpoints for that particular activity. You can find these on your Volunteer Resources CD and on the GSMH website. Each Safety Activity Checkpoint offers you information on where to do this activity, how to include girls with disabilities, where to find both basic and specialized gear required for the activity, how to prepare yourselves for the activity, what specific steps to follow on the day of the activity, and so on. The checkpoints are formatted as checklists, so that you and the girls can check off each step that has been accomplished. In keeping with the three processes of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience, be sure that: • All activities are girl-led. Take into account the age and abilities of the girls. Older girls can take the bulk of the responsibility for carefully planning and executing activities, while younger girls will require more of your guidance but should still be deeply involved in making decisions about their activities. • Girls have the chance to learn cooperatively. Have girls teach each other new skills they may need for the activities, rather than hearing all that from you. • Girls learn by doing. If research or special equipment is needed, they’ll learn better by doing that re- search themselves than by having you do the legwork and report back to them. Even Daisies can do basic research and give reports or do show-and-tell for each other. Ambassadors may need you only for moral support as they research, teach each other, and plan every detail of their excursions. If Safety Activity Checkpoints do not exist for an activity you and the girls are interested in, check with a GSMH leadership and learning specialist before making any definite plans with the girls. A few activities are allowed only with written council pre-approval and only for girls 12 and over (e.g. operating motorized vehicles, using firearms, trips on changeable waterways), while some are off-limits completely (e.g., bungee jumping, parachuting, extreme variations of approved activities).
Girl Scouts has a fantastic safety record and we know that our volunteers take every precaution to assure the safety of Girl Scouts in their care. However, you should always be prepared in case of a serious accident, health emergency, or fatality. Please take the time to read through the GSMH Crisis Guide for Leaders, available on the Volunteer Resources CD and online, and carry the bright magenta Crisis Communication Card with you at all times. Remember: no volunteer should make ANY KIND of statement to the media, or give out names or information. If the media shows up at the scene of the accident or you are contacted by someone from the media, ask the person to call the GSMH Administrative Service Center (877-312-4764) or the afterhours phone number listed on the Crisis Communication Card. 60

Fees may be paid by cash, check, credit card or Girl Scout Cookie Credit gift card. Partial assistance may be granted. Applicants will be notified when financial assistance for books, uniforms, council events, series, travel, camp fees, and adult trainings is granted, and when financial assistance for membership dues is either partially granted or denied.
