The mark of the truly remarkable. Gold Award Girl Scouts are girls in high school whose desire to create lasting change in the world puts them in a class by themselves. They are confident young women poised to reach their goals in higher education, career, and life. They make ideal college applicants who are ready to lead on campus. Gold Award Girl Scouts create measurable, sustainable, and far-reaching impact by making a remarkable commitment to issues that are important to them. Their efforts reflect a stunning ability to drive meaningful change.
These girls have changed the world. And the Gold Award has changed their lives dramatically, empowering them as change-makers. Hear from them about their journey. “The most important thing I learned through my Gold Award was goal setting and time management. I learned there are a lot of volunteer opportunities for teenagers.” —Taylor Cape Girardeau, MO “My Girl Scout Gold Award Project emphasized that not everyone in the world is as fortunate as some. I learned that all of us can make a difference. The smallest things can help change a person’s life so get out here, donate, and volunteer. Go help make the world a better place.” —MacKenzie Waynesville, MO

“I have learned that creating a project like this [Gold Award] is a lot of hard work. It takes a whole team to create something special. I have learned I have a voice and can take my ideas and make them a reality.” —Sara Joplin, MO
“[Through my Gold Award] I have gained so many skills including social skills and leading a group to successfully complete a project.” —Elizabeth Springfield, MO “Through my Gold Award project I learned that I am really passionate about politics and getting people engaged in their political community, especially those close to my age.” —Madison Springfield, MO “[Through my Gold Award] I saw how my ideas could influence and teach others. I will feel more confident with other ideas I will have in the future and won’t be scared to act.” —Madelyn Cape Girardeau, MO “While completing my Gold Award project, I learned that all girls need opportunities to share and explore their talents. It is very important for all girls to be provided with a wide variety of opportunities to find their strengths.” —Kayton Kennett, MO “[Through my Gold Award] I learned the power of dedication, so many times I began thinking, ‘I should just quit’ but ultimately I knew that would be the worst possible option for me.” —Sydni Hartsburg, MO “It takes a tremendous amount of work and planning when taking on a project this size. Through my Gold Award I developed patience, motivation skills, and learned to be louder. ” —Alexis Freeburg, MO “I have learned how to confidently lead myself through projects this large [Gold Award project]. I will be able to look problems in the eye and decide how I can work to fix them, even if they are as big as human trafficking.” —Michelle Springfield, MO
“Through my Gold Award I learned that you can do anything you set your mind to if you work hard enough. I learned a lot about what it takes to be a leader and that communication is key with everyone you are working with.” —Kylie Sedalia, MO “My Gold Award project showed me what I am capable of and it gave me the courage to assert myself and take the lead.” —Ashley Springfield, MO “I chose my project because I know friends who had nothing when entering the Foster Care System. I want the children impacted by my project to know they are not alone in this world, even if they think they are. I want them to have hope.” —Gabrielle Doniphan, MO “I did my Gold Award project because when I was younger, and in the hospital, I was given a blanket that made me feel loved and special. I wanted to give that same feeling to other kids. Through my project I learned how to manage time, teach others, and have patience.” —Janelle Springfield, MO volunteer 411 • fall/winter 2019

13 Tips for
Girl Scout Troop Leaders Starting a Girl Scout troop is a big deal! Some new leaders jump in with both feet, and others might be a little nervous, perhaps not sure where to start or who to turn to for help. If you fall into the second group, no worries! We jumped on Facebook, where we turned to the experts—bona fide troop leaders—for insight only they can provide. Specifically, we asked them for the single best piece of advice they have for new troop leaders. The response was overwhelming! There were so many great comments, it was hard to narrow them down. But here are some of our favorites, many of them reflecting clear themes among comments received, and all serving as valuable guidance for new troop leaders (and even those who’ve been at it a while) on starting and running a Girl Scout troop. 1. Go to your service unit leader meetings—you will make new friends and get loads of tips from more experienced leaders!
10
volunteer 411 • fall/winter 2019
2. Get parents involved from day one. Then later when you need them they will be used to lending a hand and it will be so much easier on you.
3. Get your troop into state parks! Almost all of them have badge programs! Take them to lots of different events.
4. Starting in Daisies, give each girl a composition notebook. Every time the girl does some kind of community service, write it in the book, with the date, time, and place. By the time she reaches college she will have a complete record of service. My daughter had over 700 hours by the time she finished high school! 5. Have fun! A lot of focus is placed on rules, roles, recruiting, and all that good stuff. Those things—along with safety—come first (and always should) but if you don’t have fun or enjoy what you are doing… you will burn out quickly. So make slime with your girls, take in the sights on a hike, make yourself a s’more on the campfire, and more! Not only will you have fun too, but it will allow you to develop a good connection with your girls. 6. Camp every year! We started taking the girls on camping trips as Daisies six years ago. Each year they learned new skills, tried new outdoor activities, and went to new places. We’ve done rock walls, horseback, kayaking, canoeing, zip lining, lodge and tent camping, made countless campfire meals, and more. And the girls always say their favorite part of Girl Scouts is camping. 7. Have the troop vote on badges. Each girl ranks their top 3 badges, then assign each girl one badge and a meeting, and they are in charge of presenting and engaging their troop in earning it. Cuts down on nonessential chatter and girls not paying attention to the speaker(s) once they realize what it is like to experience it. Also, puts the responsibility on them. I started this in 3rd grade. 8. Do what the girls want to do. Provide them with lots of choices and facilitate what they’re interested in. They want to camp but you’re uncomfortable? Ask for help from your service unit and community! They want to work on a badge you know nothing about? Ask for help! I had the girls make the decisions on what we were doing a majority of the time (with support) even though they were only Brownies.
9. Trust the program. Don’t panic, depend on your council professionals. 10. Kapers chart. These are especially good when they are little. It divvies up responsibilities at meetings. You lead the pledge, you help hand out snacks, you lead the songs, etc. And you shift it once over each meeting so everyone gets a chance. 11. Take advantage of any and all in-person training. All these ladies are in the same place you are. It’s nice to bounce ideas off each other and someone will ask a question you didn’t think of. New people = New ideas. 12. Don’t try to do it all, especially not in the first year. Focus on one or two things at a time. Recruit other parents to take on as many roles as you can. 13. Ask questions! Don’t flounder on your own. Ask! We would love to help you.
Bonus tip: Do Journeys while camping! We would split a Journey into three segments. Fridays after dinner. Saturday morning, and then Saturday afternoon with free time between. volunteer 411 • fall/winter 2019

uniform
There are many recognizable aspects of Girl Scouts—cookies, community service, summer camp, and the uniform. When Juliette Gordon Low started Girl Scouts, she designed the first uniforms to allow girls freedom of movement in a time when women’s dress didn’t. While these uniforms have changed their appearance over the last 108 years, one thing hasn’t changed—uniforms give girls identity as part of an organization that is focused on developing leadership skills, it gives them a way to showcase their achievements, and it displays their commitment to the ideals and purpose of Girl Scouting. For any assistance with purchasing a uniform or uniform pieces, contact our customer care team at 877-312-4764 or email us at info@girlscoutsmoheartland.org.

awards
We value all volunteers and recognize the contribution you make in developing girl leaders! Girl Scout adult awards are a great way to recognize your peers who go above and beyond to make Girl Scouts the place to be. Volunteers, parents, and staff members are all encouraged to nominate adults for formal GSUSA Volunteer Awards. Here’s a summary of the GSUSA Volunteer Awards. Detailed descriptions of each award or recognition, along with nomination criteria, can be found on our website.
Nomination Process 1. Form a nomination committee in your service unit or decide who will take the lead in making sure your peers get nominated and forms are submitted on time. 2. Decide which award is appropriate for the service given by the volunteer. (Don’t overlook your Volunteer Support Coordinator! Often, they are busy making their own nominations, but here’s your chance to spread the love.) Complete criteria for each award is found on our website in the searchable forms directory.
24
volunteer 411 • fall/winter 2019

In mid-February, approved candidates will be notified that they will be recognized.

Take Action to Fight Bullying Bullying. It’s something we’re all too familiar with—whether we’ve experienced it or witnessed it. No matter how it’s done (verbally or physically) or where it happens (online or offline), bullying has been shown to cause social, emotional, mental, and physical damage in the short and the long term. If you’re wondering how to take action against it, check out how some Girl Scouts have dedicated their time to bullying prevention. Just like these G.I.R.L. standouts, you can make a difference in your own right.

1
Challenge It.
The girls of Girl Scout Troop 91046 noticed how gossiping can create a negative atmosphere at school, so they launched the No Gossip Tuesdays challenge to promote positivity and friendship among middle-school students in Brunswick, Ohio. After getting permission from school principals, they placed signs on the cafeteria tables that read “Think Before You Speak” and offered discussion topic ideas. With the students being encouraged to replace small talk with more engaging conversation, they’re likelier to build strong, positive relationships with one another and make lunchtime a safe space for everyone. The troop is currently working on bringing No Gossip Tuesdays to other local middle schools for a larger impact. In the words of its members, “Even at 12 or 13 years of age, you have the potential to make someone’s day, to be kind, to say something nice, to lend a helping hand.”
2
Raise Awareness.
When we think about bullying, we like to think that we aren’t contributing to it in any way. And yet, through certain actions of ours, we can wind up doing just this. So although it’s hard to admit that we, too, can engage in bullying behavior, learning about it—in all its shapes and forms—is the first step to stopping or preventing it. Girl Scout Tatum made it her mission to educate local youth on the subject. She organized a threeon-three basketball tournament to, in a unique way, bring attention to bullying and help participants learn about the different forms it can take and how to take action against it.
3
Spread Positivity.
Thinking of students who retreat to bathrooms when they’re angry or sad, Girl Scout Troop 4664 painted positive messages across the 42 bathroom stalls of a local school. Messages included “Broken crayons still color,” “You are brave,” “Good vibes only,” ‘”Dream, Strive, Become,” “Drive with purpose,” “You are enough,” and “Be humble and kind.”
Girl Scout Shafer said, “We thought it would be good to help people early on in their lives to be motivated and self-confident.”
4
Facilitate Friendships.
If you’ve spent time in school, you know how hard it can be to make friends. You may have eaten lunch by yourself on many occasions, wishing you could share it with someone. This feeling of isolation is pretty common among students, and it can make one an easy target for bullying.
With that in mind, the girls of Troop 8457 built and installed a “buddy bench” on the playground of their local elementary school, to encourage kids to spend time together and foster friendships. Like these Girl Scouts, you have the power to challenge and reduce the incidence of bullying. Start with your own community. Work with teachers, counselors, and administrators to change the culture that can contribute to bullying behaviors. Host events to educate your neighbors. Create safe spaces for students to share their experiences and take positive action together. Although bullying can make both victims and witnesses feel helpless, there is always something that can be done.
Girl Scouts identify issues—like bullying, greater access for people with disabilities, and conservation— and then work towards creative solutions. volunteer 411 • fall/winter 2019

Girl Scout Program Pillars As a Girl Scout volunteer, you are preparing your girls for a lifetime of leadership, success, and adventure in a space designed just for girls! As part of their Girl Scout adventure, girls will gain skills in four areas we call the program pillars, that form the foundation of the Girl Scout experience.
STEM Imagine her taking on some of the biggest challenges and problems our planet faces—and helping solve them. Or having a career that’s engaging and well paid. Imagine her teaming up with others to invent the future. Research shows that Girl Scouts who participate in girl-focused STEM programs: • Become better problem-solvers, critical thinkers, and inspirational leaders. • Get better grades, earn scholarships, and follow more lucrative career paths. • See STEM as the foundation for a meaningful and successful future. There are badges and Journeys to help girls discover STEM in exciting ways like building a robot, learning to code, exploring space, or learning how to be a citizen scientist. Girls learn the possibilities are truly endless!
Entrepreneurship The Girl Scout Cookie Program is such an important (and exciting!) part of the overall Girl Scout experience— tons of learning for her and beyond-delicious cookies for our awesome cookie customers! It’s a win-win. The Girl Scout Cookie Program is also the world’s largest girl-led business. As cookie entrepreneurs, girls gain 5 essential skills and work as a team to accomplish common goals and solve problems. 1. Goal Setting: Girls learn how to set goals and create a plan to reach them. 2. Decision Making: Girls learn to make decisions on their own and as a team. 3. Money Management: Girls learn to create a budget and handle money. 4. People Skills: Girls find their voice and build confidence through customer interactions. 5. Business Ethics: Girls learn to act ethically, both in business and in life. Badge Spotlight: Marketing Cadettes sort through promotions and ads to find the best bargain! Then, use what they’ve learned to create a strong advertisement and marketing message for their cookie campaign. • • •

Outdoors Getting girls in the outdoors is one of the cornerstones of the Girl Scout experience. Many Girl Scouts tell us “camping trips” are one of the best things about their Girl Scout experience. It’s true: connecting with nature in a girl-led setting is a big benefit of belonging to Girl Scouts. Research shows that when Girl Scouts get outside, they: • Discover that they can better solve problems and overcome challenges. • Develop leadership skills, build social bonds, and are happier overall. • Become team players and care more about protecting our environment. With Girl Scout outdoor badges, girls can develop camping skills, become outdoor artists, or go on a hiking or climbing adventure. In the summer, girls can go to one of our resident camps to experience living as a community in the out-of-doors.
Life Skills Whether it’s by exercising and staying healthy, developing strong relationships with family and peers, advocating on behalf of others, protecting our environment, or exploring careers that can truly change the world for the better, girls gain the skills and the inspiration to accept challenges, overcome obstacles, and take the lead. With Girl Scout Life Skills Journeys, here are just a few of the areas she’ll explore. •
•
Financial Literacy: Grounded in real-life situations, Financial Literacy badges provide girls with insight, skills, and practical knowledge in areas such as budgeting, philanthropy, smart spending, financial planning, and more. Civic Engagement: Focuses on preparing girls to be active and informed members of their communities.
•
Healthy Relationships: Younger girls make new friends as they strive to be considerate, caring, and kind. In middle school, girls learn how to cope with bullying. And as a Senior or Ambassador, she’ll hone her people skills with her peers and her community.
Badge Spotlight: College Knowledge From test prep to financial aid, Ambassadors walk through all the steps of the college admission process and build healthier habits as they prepare to attend the school of their choice. • • •

Girl-led is an important part of Girl Scouting—it’s how girls make the experience their own. Letting girls decide what events to attend is an important way to make sure your troop is girl-led. Let girls look through the following event listings and circle the ones that stand out! You can also access it online to make it easier for multiple girls to see, or if you have Daisies or young Brownies you can read to them. Don’t worry if the entire troop can’t attend all the events the girls are interested in—girls can attend with a parent or other adult!

Year of the Outdoor Girl Since the beginning of Girl Scouting, outdoor experiences have been fundamental to the Girl Scout movement. Dive in — you are here. It’s the Year of the Outdoor Girl and there is something for everyone. We’re here to make sure you and your girls have wow-worthy outdoor adventures this year. celebrate Throw a Party!
Founder’s Day
Work with your troop or service unit to throw a Founder’s Day Birthday Party! Check out our suggestions for some of Juliette’s favorite things to include in the festivities. The elements of your party can vary, as long as it centers around Juliette Gordon Low and her love for Girl Scouts! Plan a Service Project—Juliette believed in helping others and wanted every Girl Scout to be of service to her community. Take some time in the celebration to plan out a local service project like volunteering at a food pantry or animal shelter, cleaning up a park or your meeting place, or collecting food or personal hygiene items to donate to a local pantry. Learn Proper Etiquette—Juliette believed that every girl should know proper etiquette. Bonus! Turn your party into a tea party—and teach table manners, proper greetings, and make fancy hats. Make SWAPS—Gather some crafting materials and instructions for one or two SWAPS. Play old-fashioned games—hopscotch, marbles, leapfrog, 20 questions, or charades.
Serve popcorn— Juliette’s favorite party snack! volunteer 411 • fall/winter 2019

s e i t i l i b i s n o p res Troop Financial Reports
Troop Finances
All troops and service units are required to submit a Financial Report by October 1. This report must be verified and signed by three unrelated adults and submitted by the deadline. Report forms are available on our website.
Troops and girls should be learning to budget in a responsible and sustainable way. That means each troop should be working to minimize extra costs to themselves and to families. Troop members and families may vote to utilize troop proceeds for volunteers’ membership dues, training fees, program chaperone fees, or books. However, troop funds may never be utilized for volunteers’ personal expenses such as fuel and apparel.
Donations Girl Scouts may not raise funds on behalf of other organizations, though they may choose to contribute troop funds to service projects and initiatives of their choice. Troops may also make donations, either material or monetary, to organizations of their choice. To receive donations, troop leaders should contact our Resource Development department.
Troop MoneyEarning Projects The Girl Scout program is intended to be self-sufficient. All troops are encouraged to participate in the Fall Product Program and Girl Scout Cookie Program to help provide troop funding. Because Girl Scouts of the Missouri Heartland, Inc. is the holder of a non-profit 501(c) (3) status, all additional troop money-earning activities must be pre-approved by our Resource Development department. Complete guidelines and the Troop MoneyEarning Activity Application are available on our website.
48
volunteer 411 • fall/winter 2019
Troop income earned through troop dues collection, product program, and money-earning activities should be utilized to serve all girls and the troop at large. Troop funds are shared by all members of the troop, and cannot be given directly to, earmarked, or designated for specific girls in dollar or percentage amounts. For further guidance on how to budget troop funds, please refer to the Troop Financial Guidelines on our website. It is a good idea to be transparent with families about troop funds and their usage throughout the year. We strongly encourage troop leaders to: • provide receipts for parents whenever money is exchanged. • provide parents with regular financial updates or notification of how and when troop funds are spent. • allow parents to audit the troop checkbook and/or the annual Troop Financial Report. • keep receipts for all purchases. • limit ATM/cash withdrawals for troop expenses, and keep receipts to document cash purchases for the troop.
Financial Assistance Financial assistance application forms are available on our website. A separate application must be submitted for each applicant; troop applications are not accepted. Financial assistance is reserved for those who demonstrate need; it is not a substitute for troop funds or proceeds. Financial assistance is available for the following: Girls: membership dues; handbooks; uniform pieces; GSMH program events, trips, and camp; Girl Scout Destinations. Adults: membership dues; Journey handbooks; GSMH program events and trips; volunteer trainings.

s e i t i l i b i s n o p s e r Girl Scout adult-to-girl ratios show the minimum number of adults needed to supervise a specific number of girls at each Girl Scout grade level. These ratios ensure the safety of girls and adults at Girl Scout activities. For example, if one adult has to respond to an emergency, a second adult is always on hand for the remaining girls. The adults counted in these safety ratios must be approved* volunteers who are unrelated to each other (i.e., not siblings, spouses, parents, significant others, etc.) and are at least 18 years old. At least one adult at all activities must be an approved* female volunteer. Use this handy chart to identify how many adults you need for the number of girls participating in your troop or activity!

Council Program Events
Troop Meetings
All troops attending council events must meet required adult-to-girl ratios and have at least one approved* female volunteer in attendance. Adult chaperones should not exceed the number of girls registered per troop unless the event is designated as a family event.
Driving Safety
Safety Activity Checkpoints Most activities outside of regular troop meetings have additional safety guidelines. Please refer to the Safety Activity Checkpoints on our website before conducting each activity.
All troops must have at least two approved* volunteers at meetings, with at least one being female.
Any adult who drives a vehicle with girls other than her/his own daughter(s) during a council event must be an approved* volunteer, at least 21 years of age, and a registered member. If a driver is male, there must be an approved* female volunteer also traveling with the group.
*An approved volunteer is an adult who has completed a volunteer application and background check, received notice of appointment from GSMH, and is a currently-registered Girl Scout member. All volunteers must complete an updated background check at least every three years.
First Aiders A first aider is recommended for every troop, and is required for many Girl Scout activities. The Safety Activity Checkpoints will tell you if a first aider is required. Some medical professionals automatically qualify as first aiders. GSMH offers CPR and First Aid trainings in all regions throughout the year.
