Girls’ desires to give back can

cover a wide range of interests, but through giving back, girls also get something for themselves: experiences that help them gain new skills and develop empathy for others. Girls love to feel they are making a difference and having an impact on the world. They also love to see the effects of their efforts. The Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards are opportunities for girls to Take Action to give back and make their community and the world a better place.

LEADERSHIP and LEARNING SPECIALIST GIRL SCOUT LEADERSHIP EXPERIENCE WHEN SHOULD GIRLS EARN WHY SHOULD GIRLS EARN THEIR GOLD AWARD? THEIR GOLD AWARD? The ideal time to start thinking about it is their sophomore year in high school. But, girls should really try to complete their project (the take action portion) during their junior year. Don’t let them wait until their senior year, because it’s a very busy time for all seniors! (But they do technically have until Sept. 30 after graduation to complete their award.)

HOW SHOULD GIRLS PICK THEIR GOLD AWARD PROJECT? Their project needs to be what they’re passionate about! Girls are going to spend over 80 hours working on their Take Action projects, so it should be something they feel very, very strongly about! If they’re having trouble, start with a big idea (like, “I want to help save the environment!”). But then narrow it down to something manageable, like recycling or improving air quality.

Any girl that wants to go to college, and hopes to get a college scholarship needs to earn their gold award! Very few percent of girls even applying to college are eligible to earn the Gold Award, and even fewer actually do! It really stands out on college applications. Some schools even have specific scholarships for Gold Awardees. Don’t be afraid to call the financial assistance office at the school to ask!

WHAT SHOULD GIRLS KNOW WHEN FILLING OUT THEIR GOLD AWARD APPLICATION? There’s two things I always tell girls. The first, it has to be legible! Consider typing your application. And second, make sure you do a great job explaining your project. You may have the best idea in the world, but if you don’t explain it well, the committee might not think that your project is gold award worthy.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN A GIRL STARTS HER PROJECT, BUT IT DOESN’T WORK OUT THEY WAY SHE PLANNED? This is just a great learning opportunity for the rest of her life. Many times things don’t work out the way we plan. We just have to learn to keep that road block from stopping us. Girls can rework their project. If you or your girls have a problem or any questions, don’t hesitate to call your local GSLE!

“I believe one person can make a difference and can sow the seed to lead to more and more.”

-Kassy

KASSY | MARBLE HILL, MO Thank you so much for this opportunity to spread my project even more! It’s an absolute blessing and I’m very excited. I have learned so much about myself, as well as the true need for projects like this in high schools. The support and listening ears of others is a dire need for teens when it comes to the issue of depression and suicide. I am so glad I pursued my project, I believe it truly benefited teens in my area. I believe one person can make a difference and can sow the seed to lead to more and more.

gold awards WHAT DID YOU LEARN WHILE EARNING THE GOLD AWARD? RACHEL | KENNETT, MO

The most important thing I learned while completing my Gold Award is the satisfaction of hard work. It was very rewarding to accomplish a project that was out of my comfort zone. Also, I learned how important it is to manage time and to communicate with higher levels of authority. This experience will remain with me forever and has definitely built my confidence to help me in this new chapter of my life.

ALLI | KENNETT, MO

I learned that a good leader needs to adapt to changes and the unexpected, and that I have a true love of working with kids because of their eagerness to learn. I feel extremely confident that my ability as a leader, and specifically a leader among young children, has grown because of this project. I am more comfortable in working with children and adults in my community, and I am sure my skills will continue to expand and develop.

SARENE | CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO

The leadership skills I learned through my project will help me succeed. Being able to communicate with multiple organizations and helping a large group of people will help my future career.

TORI | FULTON, MO

I developed many practical skills and the knowledge to advocate for others. This project put me in a small group of mostly adults who wanted to use our strengths to effectively and efficiently achieve our goal. Hopefully in the future when faced with a need in my community, I can use my skills learned in Girl Scouts to help.

CLAIRE | SPRINGFIELD, MO I learned how to commit to a project no matter what conflicts I may face and how to solve problems. I also learned how to be more of a leader while organizing volunteers. I will take the leadership and team work skills I developed to allow for a better future.

at-a-glance

EMILY | NEOSHO, MO

TELL US ABOUT YOUR GOLD AWARD PROJECT. My Gold Award project focused on helping children that don’t have the basic necessities. I made global problems better known in my community by partnering with women in Africa to make shoes for children.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN WHILE EARNING THE GOLD AWARD? The most important thing I learned is that there are more important issues going on around the world than directly around me.

The wearing of uniforms unites girls as Girl Scouts. For all girls, the unifying look includes wearing a choice of a tunic, vest, sash for displaying official pins and awards, combined with their own solid white shirts, khaki pants or skirts and a scarf. Girl Scout uniforms are required when girls participate in ceremonies or officially represent the Girl Scout Movement. For adult members, the unifying look of the uniform is a Girl Scout official scarf, or tie for men, worn with the official membership pins, combined with their own navy blue business attire. Girl Scouts at the Daisy and Brownie levels will continue to have a full uniform ensemble available.

For over a century, Girl Scouts have proudly worn distinctive uniforms that symbolize the high ideals for which Girl Scouting stands. The Girl Scout uniform has always been special. Do your girls have theirs?

4 Her Promise

There are only so many hours in a day, and girls and their families have to balance many growing and diverging interests, commitments, and responsibilities. That’s why Girl Scouting today is more flexible than ever! 4 Her Promise is a program centered on parent participation. With 4 Her Promise, you offer options and ask parents to make a four-hour commitment – for her. They will select volunteer roles or troop tasks that interest them, at the same time helping you and the troop.

Successfully building a family-wide troop support network has three key ingredients.

1. Offer parents a variety of options with clearly defined responsibilities and time commitment factors. (4 Her Flyer available on our website, or create your own list.) 2. Ask parents to promise a minimum of four hours per family – for her. (4 Her Promise Cards available on our website.) 3. Publicly recognize a parent/family when they hit four hours of given time. (4 Her Promise Certificate of Appreciation available on our website.)

What can a 4-hour promise really do? • 4 Her Promise is an open door to participation for parents and family members. • It can build a solid support base, and strengthen a girl’s chances of longevity with the troop. • You’ll witness the positive effect parent participation has on the troop. • Your troop can accomplish so much more, with just a little help. • Communication between you and other troop families significantly increases. • You build future volunteers as children witness parent volunteerism firsthand.

4 Her Promise Tip

You can ask one parent to be involved with 4 Her Promise by being in charge of matching parents with the opportunities and tracking their hours.

Note: All adults who help the troop regularly, have regular contact with girls, transport girls, or handle troop funds must complete the GSMH volunteer application and background check process.
