Q: A:

I have special needs. Can I come to camp? Yes! Each year, many girls with special needs are able to participate in our camp program. Girls must be able to function in a 6:1 child-to-adult ratio. Please call 1-800-284-4475, to discuss the camp program and nature of your needs before registering for camp. Special needs may include physical, medical, developmental, dietary, behavioral, or communicative.

Q: A:

Can I call home during the week? No, we encourage independence and self-reliance. You are not permitted to make or receive phone calls. The Camp Director will contact your parents if you have a medical problem or an emergency. Please leave your cell phone at home, as camp is not the place for expensive electronics, there is little or no coverage, and most importantly it will send a conflicting message to the other campers.

Q:

Can my parents come to visit during a camp session? No, to help program continuity and maintain security of campers, visitors are allowed at camp during open house and arrival and departure hours only.

CAMP LOW DOWN Q: A:

Q: A:

Who can come to Girl Scout resident camp? Camp is open to all girls entering grades 2-12 regardless of race, religion, disabilities, national origin, or socio-economic factors. All programs are open to Girl Scouts and non-Girl Scouts. Some programs may have prerequisites, which must be met to ensure the health, safety, and well being of the camper. Where will I sleep? Girls are grouped in units. Depending on your program choice, you may sleep in cabins or platform tents. Each unit has trained counselors, housed in separate quarters within in the living unit, but close enough to supervise campers.

Q: A:

Can I come to camp with a friend? Yes, we would love for you to come to camp with your best bud. There is a space on the registration form for the buddy’s name to be listed. You may request only one buddy. You both need to be in the same age group and register for the same session. Sorry, we cannot honor requests for more than one pal.

Q: A:

What are the camp staff like? Are they trained? The camp staff are enthusiastic, talented, and caring. They are selected based on their maturity, program experience, and genuine desire to work with girls like you. All counselors are at least 18 years old. Before camp begins, staff attend an intensive on-site training, including activity programming, outdoor skills, songs, games, first aid and safety, emergency procedures, team building, program age level characteristics, dealing with homesickness, and much more.

Q: A:

Is the staff local? Most of the camp staff is from North Carolina. However, we work with Camp Counselors USA to recruit diverse staff from many different countries around the world. These counselors share their culture with the campers through camp activities.

A:

Q: A:

What is the daily schedule like at camp? The schedule will vary a little based on the camp and the program you are in but should shake up like this: 7:00 a.m. Wake Up 8:00 a.m. Breakfast/Flag/Kapers 9:30 a.m. Morning Activities 12:30 p.m. Lunch/Downtime 2:30 p.m. Afternoon Activities/Unit time 6:00 p.m. Dinner/Flag 7:15 p.m. All Camp Activity 9:30 p.m. Quiet Time

Q:

What happens if I have a difficult time adjusting to camp? Camp staff will do everything possible to help you adjust to camp life. However, resident camp staff reserves the right to send any girl home that consistently exhibits inappropriate behavior or endangers herself or others. The girl's parent/guardian is responsible for picking her up, and fees will not be refunded.

A:

Q: A:

How safe are Girl Scout camps? We are dedicated to providing safe and secure camps for our campers. Each camp follows the guidelines set forth by the American Camp Association, as well as those set by Girl Scouts of the USA, through Safety-Wise. Staff are housed in close proximity to camper cabins and tents, and buildings and grounds are checked nightly.

Girl Scout Recognitions Camp is full of fun activities – archery, swimming, climbing the Alpine Tower, eating in the dining hall, cooking out, and making friends. Some of these activities meet requirements for earning an interest project award or charm. You will receive a list of recognition requirements completed at camp. The awards can be purchased at the Council Shops in accordance with your troop’s procedures. Campers will receive a camp patch.

Group and Troop Camp! Group Camp at Camp Graham is a blast! Troops and groups, complete with leaders, spend a week exploring the wilds of Vance County and Kerr Lake while swimming, sailing, canoeing, and enjoying other fun camp activities. These week and half-week sessions are designed for a group of girls and adults to attend resident camp as a unit. Stay for a week-long session, arriving Sunday afternoon and leaving Friday evening. For a halfweek session come Wednesday afternoon and stay until Friday. At Group Camp, girls camp in groups and attend with their troop/group leader or other adult. Camp Graham provides a "core" staff, including camp director, lifeguards, health supervisor, arts and crafts director, and dining hall staff. Each group has the opportunity to plan some of their own activities and can also participate in some waterfront, sports, crafts, and all-camp sessions led by the camp staff. Meals are prepared for you in the dining hall, and training is provided for Group Camp leaders before you’re off to camp. It really is the best of all worlds – a camping experience away from home, camping with your closest troop/group buddies, and meeting new girls from other areas at camp. What else could you ask for? For more information contact the Program Director for Camp Graham at 1-800-284-4475, ext. 3345 or visit us on the web at www.nccoastalpines.org. Group camp dates are: • Session 1 – June 16-18, 2010 (Mini-Session) • Session 2 – June 20-25, 2010 • Session 3 – June 27-July 2, 2010 • Session 4 – July 4-9, 2010 • Session 5 – July 11-16, 2010 • Session 6 – July 18-23, 2010 • Session 7 – July 25-30, 2010

CAMP KALEIDOSCOPE RETURNS TO CAMP GRAHAM!

For the past 31 years, Camp Kaleidoscope has been a part of Camp Graham. Through Camp Kaleidoscope, chronically ill children are given a chance to take a break from hospitals and have some fun in the outdoors.

8

The boys and girls who attend Camp Kaleidoscope all have chronic diseases such as cancer, asthma, kidney disease, or heart disease. Doctors, nurses, and other professionals from the Department of Pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center spend the week with the campers in the Kaleidoscope Unit. They participate in all aspects of camp.

For most of these kids, going to Camp Graham is their first camping experience because they cannot go camping without doctors, nurses, therapists, and special equipment. Without the Kaleidoscope program, many of the children would never have a chance to experience the fun of summer camp. This year, girls and boys in the Camp Kaleidoscope program will be at Camp Graham the weeks of July 4-9, July 11-16, and July 18-23.

Camp Costs Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines understands the value of camp and continues to share with you in providing the financial support to offer these important programs. Camp fees cover most direct costs, such as food, program supplies, supplementary health and accident insurance, and camp counselor salaries. Indirect costs, such as planning and administering the program, registration, and property maintenance are fees supplemented by the councils.

Deposits Non-refundable deposits (which are applicable toward the total camp fee) must accompany all registrations. Final payment must be made by April 30 or your camper will be dropped from that session and no refund will be made. • $50/per session for girls who are currently registered members of Girl Scouts – North Carolina

Coastal Pines • $100/per session for non-Girl Scouts and girls registered with other councils ($50 plus an

additional $50 fee) 19

Camperships Camperships for resident camp, group camp, day camp, and special programs are available to those currently registered Girl Scouts North Carolina Coastal Pines members who are unable to meet the total cost of a camp experience. Partial camperships are given based on need, active participation in the Girl Scout program, and information provided on the Financial Assistance for Summer Opportunities Form. The Campership Committee makes every effort to use available money fairly to assist as many girls as possible. The deadline for applying is April 7. All applications are handled in a confidential manner. A deposit of $50 must accompany the registration form. To make sure that camperships can be awarded to as many girls as possible, camperships will be awarded based on need for only one session of camp. No more than $175 is awarded for resident camp and $100 for group camp. Camperships are made possible thanks to our many generous donors. If you would like to make summer resident camp possible for a girl, please mark your donation to the Campership Fund on the registration form. All donations are tax deductible. To apply for a campership, submit the Financial Assistance for Summer Opportunities Form and the Camp Registration Form along with a $50 deposit by April 17 to: Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines PO Box 91649 Raleigh, NC 27675

If you wish to use your 2010 Cookie Dough for camp, please note this on your SuperStar destination request (due April 1). You can apply any and all of your dough. PLEASE NOTE: Cookie Dough is non-transferable and can only be used by the girl who earns it.
