Girl Scouts are groundbreakers, role models, and thought leaders. Whether designing a robot, starting a garage band, or improving the community through a service project, Girl Scouts across central and eastern North Carolina are taking the lead like a G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™ every day. Girl Scouts - North Carolina Coastal Pines helps prepare every G.I.R.L. of different ages, interests, ethnicities, and skills for a lifetime of leadership through unique, life-changing programs and experiences. From starting a community garden to earning one of our highest awards, girls demonstrate grit and determination in achieving goals, leverage creative skills when solving problems, build a courageous spirit while embracing challenges, and lead the way with empathy and bravery. And, of course, she’ll have a ton of fun with her friends along the way. At Girl Scouts, we believe in the power of every G.I.R.L. as she discovers who she is, what she cares about, and how she’ll leave her mark on the world. And we won’t rest until every G.I.R.L. is prepared to empower herself. Our 2017-2018 Activity Guide is full of amazing programs, trainings, and special opportunities designed to help her build and strengthen leadership skills while teaching her to embrace her inner go-getter, innovator, risk-taker, and leader. Registering Online for Activities

Welcome to the online Girl Scout member community! My GS is your digital one stop shop for all things related to your Girl Scout experience. There are two main sections of My GS: Member Profile and Volunteer Toolkit. Member Profile is accessible to all current members and is where you can renew memberships, update contact information, and view members of your household. The Volunteer Toolkit is accessible for girls/guardians and troop leaders and is where the troop can plan their program year, track badge and award accomplishments, and submit troop financial information. To login to My GS, visit www.nccoastalpines.org and click My GS in the main menu bar.

• Click Activities on the website homepage to view activities in a list or calendar format. Use the advanced search to filter for specific activities. You can also log in to My GS and register under the Activities tab. • Click the name of the activity (on the website or in My GS) and select Register Now to begin the online registration process or Add to My Activities to select the activity and continue searching. • Follow the online prompts to pay and complete your registration.

Safety and Supervision Adult Supervision Requirements A minimum of two adults must accompany every troop to a program activity unless otherwise stated. Please consult the guidelines in Safety Activity Checkpoints or Volunteer Essentials for exact ratio information. Our primary goal is to provide quality programming for girls; space may not be available for additional adults above the stated ratio. Please note that if you exceed the number adults required you may be asked to limit them based on space availability. Financial Information & Policies Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines is proud to offer financial assistance to ensure every girl has the opportunity to find her inner G.I.R.L. To review the council’s full cancellation and refund policy, learn more about and apply for financial assistance, including Wider Opportunity Assistance, visit www.nccoastalpines.org. The full policies can be found under the Activity main menu bar on the Financial Information and Policies webpage. For questions contact the council at helpdesk@nccoastalpines.org or 800-284-4475. Proceeds from the Girl Scout Cookie Program help our council provide high-quality experiences for all girls regardless of their socio-economic status.

Cancellation and Refund Policy Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines reserves the right to cancel an activity due to insufficient registration, acts of nature, or any other reason beyond its control. Councilsponsored activities are held rain or shine, unless inclement weather adversely affects the program. If an activity is canceled or rescheduled, registered participants will be notified and refunds processed accordingly. A significant amount of planning time and money are spent months prior to the opening of council-sponsored activities and trainings. Prompt cancellation notification allows time for girls who may be on the waiting list to attend the activity. Our refund policies include required notification to be provided to the council at least 15 days prior to an activity. Please review the cancellation and refund policy on our website.

Financial Assistance Information and Policies Financial assistance for activities is available for registered Girl Scouts who would otherwise be unable to attend local council-sponsored activities. Requests for financial assistance are confidential and based on personal information establishing the applicant’s need. • Financial assistance is not available for events which cost $10 or less. • To request financial assistance and reserve your space, a deposit and financial assistance request form must be completed for each event. Please use form PG330 Application for Individual Financial Assistance and Registration for Council-Sponsored Activities.

Wider Opportunity Assistance A Wider Opportunity is defined as an event, trip, or project that goes beyond the ordinary troop program and enhances the Girl Scout experience. Wider Opportunities are educational in nature and provide growth experience for girls and persons involved. Only registered girl and adult members may apply for Wider Opportunity Assistance. Applications for Wider Opportunity Assistance are due on the first of every month. It is recommended that troops and/or individuals submit their applications three to six months in advance of the trip date. Please review the full policy and find the Wider Opportunity Assistance application on the council website. 5

Exciting news, Girl Scouts! Brand new Journeys and badges focusing on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) and the great outdoors are rolling out this fall. The Journeys will be available in the Volunteer Toolkit for all grade levels and include multi-level Journeys as well. These new leadership Journeys align with one or more of our five program outcomes: sense of self, positive values, challenge seeking, healthy relationships, and community problem solving while supporting the overarching Girl Scout Leadership Experience.

Think Like an Engineer Journey with curated content from Design Squad for K-5 girls and multi-level troops.

Think Like a Programmer Journey focusing on Computational Thinking with content curated from Code.org for K-5 girls and multi-level troops.

Outdoor Journey focusing on progressive outdoor experiences for Daisies through Ambassadors. Each Journey will be composed of badges to build outdoor skills, including the new Troop Camping (Girlsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; Choice) badges, and a new Take Action badge for all grade levels. The Journey will include multi-level leader tips and guides. This journey will be available on the Volunteer Toolkit for K-5 girls/troops and as PDFs for 6-12 girls/troops.

New robotics badges will also be available for Daisies, Brownies, and Juniors.

Outdoor STEM Think Like a Citizen Scientist with content sourced from SciStarter focusing on the Scientific Method for K-5 girls and multi-level troops.

How to Save a Life: First Aid/CPR for Teens

Swing into golf! At this event, girls will learn golf fundamentals in an empowering atmosphere and will earn a Triangle First Tee fun patch. Participants will play games and explore The First Tee of the Triangle’s Nine Core Values at this introductory golf clinic. Equipment will be provided. Learn basic level First Aid/CPR/AED skills with your fellow Girl Scouts! Participants will cover breathing and cardiac emergencies in adults and children, introduction to AEDs, and how to identify and care for bleeding, sudden illnesses, and injuries. After successfully participating in this training, girls will have earned their First Aid/CPR/AED certification from the American Red Cross. Adults in attendance will not receive certification. Girl Scout Victoria of Kinston channeled her inner go-getter as she made the world a better place through service. For her Girl Scout Gold Award project, Educate, Protect, Empower,

Victoria designed a program that educates and inspires women to recognize and defend against domestic abuse. The city of Kinston recognized Victoria’s dedication and contributions by naming her an outstanding community citizen. She was also selected by The Prudential Spirit Community Awards as a top youth volunteer in 2017. Victoria continues to demonstrate grit and determination as she works towards making the world a better place.

How to Save a Life: The Pillowcase Project Join us for a fun and interactive day learning the best ways to stay safe during emergencies such as fires, floods or hurricanes. Working with the American Red Cross, girls will understand the science of hazards and will become empowered to take action in preparing for emergencies. The Art of Zentangle Zentangle is a relaxing and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. Increase your focus, creativity, and sense of personal well-being, while learning a new form of stress relief to help with everyday healthy living. Girl Scout Troop #25 took action by making 24 chemotherapy care packages for patients at a local cancer center. The troop was inspired to help others after learning about Girl Scout Founder, Juliette Gordon Low’s battle with breast cancer. The girls used their creative thinking skills to come up with the idea of chemo care packages by hosting a Think Pink party where they learned more about staying healthy, celebrated the rich life of Juliette, and earned the council’s Think Pink patch.

About Girl Scout Highest Awards The Golden Eagle of Merit, the highest award in Girl Scouting from 1916 to 1919, marked the beginning of a long tradition of using a prestigious award to recognize girls who make a difference in their communities and in their own lives. In 1980, Girl Scouts introduced the Girl Scout Gold Award, its highest honor earned by Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors, along with the Girl Scout Silver Award earned by Girl Scout Cadettes, and the Girl Scout Bronze Award earned by Girl Scout Juniors. Today these three awards are the highest of the Girl Scout experience.

Girl Scout Silver Award and Bronze Award Going for the Girl Scout Silver and/or Bronze Award gives a Girl Scout Junior or Cadette the chance to show that she is a leader who is organized, determined, and dedicated to improving her community. Earning these awards puts girls among an exceptional group who have used their knowledge and leadership skills to make a difference in the world. The prerequisite to earning your Girl Scout Silver or Bronze Award is to complete a Junior or Cadette Journey with a minimum time commitment of 20 hours for the Bronze Award and 50 hours for the Silver Award.

As a Girl Scout, you are committed to doing your very best with each step. How much time is needed per step is different for every Girl Scout. Each step you and/or your award team take toward making a difference in the world gives you a great chance to learn and grow, and make your award project an amazing one!

Girl Scout Gold Award The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest and most prestigious award that Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors can earn. A girl earning the Girl Scout Gold Award will be joining the ranks of generations of young women who have made a difference in their communities both locally and globally. The Girl Scout Gold Award follows the Standards of Excellence and challenges you to develop yourself as a leader, achieve the Girl Scout Leadership Outcomes, and make a mark on your community that creates a lasting impact on the lives of others. Fulfilling the requirements for the Girl Scout Gold Award starts with the completion of two Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador Journeys, or having earned the Silver Award and completing one Senior or Ambassador Journey. Each Journey completed gives you the skills you need to plan and implement your Take Action project. After you have fulfilled the Journey(s) requirement, 80 hours is the minimum hours for the steps: identifying an issue, investigating it thoroughly, getting help and building a team, creating a plan, presenting your plan, gathering feedback, taking action, and educating and inspiring others.

CARY GIRL SCOUT NAMED NATIONAL YOUNG WOMAN OF DISTINCTION

Local Girl Scout Sadhana Anantha was named by Girl Scouts of the USA as a 2016 National Young Woman of Distinction, the organization’s most prestigious honor. Annually, Girl Scouts of the USA selects 10 National Young Women of Distinction among Girl Scout candidates who have earned their Girl Scout Gold Award, which represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting.

For her Gold Award project, Sadhana created a science lab to educate and engage pre-teens about diverse diagnostic tests used to identify various diseases such as Ebola. She conducted a simulation activity during which she used a mock ELISA test to demonstrate how to diagnose the Ebola virus. Sadhana shared, “The stigma of ‘I can’t do or understand this because I am too young’ was a mindset I wanted to dispel. In turn, I wanted to inspire young minds to take action and encourage them to begin to create their own footprint in the world.”

Scholarships and Awards Jane S. Barringer Award Girl Scout Gold Award recipients are eligible to apply for the Jane S. Barringer Award. This is a cash award established to honor Mrs. Barringer, an outstanding teen advisor. A group of her former Girl Scouts, along with Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines, has instituted an award in her name to be given to individuals who embody the principles and spirit that “Mrs. B” works to instill. Mrs. Barringer was recognized for 50 years of membership in Girl Scouting.

Misty Crabtree Eastham Memorial Scholarship The Misty Crabtree Eastham Scholarship was established to honor the memory of lifelong Girl Scout Misty Crabtree Eastham, and provides scholarships for Girl Scout Gold Award recipients to help defray college expenses. As a girl in foster care who earned her Girl Scout Gold Award, Misty felt that Girl Scouting had a tremendous impact on her life and provided opportunities that she may never have had a chance to pursue. This scholarship embodies Misty’s sense of selflessness, generosity, drive, and determination. 2018 Cookie Program

During the 2017-2018 membership year, girls and troops will have the opportunity to participate in two council-sponsored, money-earning activities.

The 2018 Girl Scout Cookie Program theme is Stand Up Stand Out with the adorable Elephant as our mascot. Focusing on the five essential skills, the program is designed to help girls grow into leaders of courage, confidence, and character while learning valuable life skills: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics.

2017 Fall Product Program The Fall Product Program gives girls and troops the opportunity to sell magazine subscriptions (new and renewals) and very popular nuts and candy in order to earn quick and easy startup money for their troop. This “friends and family sale” is conducted both face-toface and via the internet through a secure program. As part of the Fall Product Program, girls can develop e-commerce skills and leverage technology to help them learn and earn as they go. Girls can create their own Fall Product Program digital avatar and even earn a patch featuring the avatar they designed. Girl Scout Daisy and Brownie troops earn 10% in proceeds plus recognitions. Girl Scout Junior, Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador troops can opt for 15% in proceeds in lieu of recognitions. Girls will still receive patches including the custom avatar patch. All Girl Scout troops earn proceeds for participating in the Cookie Program, which can be used to fund troop adventures such as travel, community service projects, council-sponsored activities, and much more. Troops earn proceeds on a scaled proceed plan based on their box-per-girl average. The more troops sell, the more they earn. In 2017, the average troop earned nearly $1,600 in proceeds! In addition to the scaled proceed plan, each Girl Scout is eligible to earn awesome recognitions based on overall sales. Girls earn cool patches for Walkabout Week, Operation Cookie Drop, and selling online through Smart Cookies Direct. Girls are also eligible to earn additional rewards such as themed t-shirts, stuffed animals, and electronics such as a Amazon Echo Dot, Apple Watch, Eno Hammock chairs, custom Converse shoes, and so much more!

Stand Up Stand Out Participating girls are also eligible to earn Superstar Destinations. Girls who qualify can earn awesome awards like Eno Hammock chairs, laptop computers, camping gear, Fitbit Blaze, JVC Bluetooth speakers and wireless headphones, and admission tickets to places like Carowinds, Busch Gardens, Great Wolf Lodge, and movie theaters! Girls can also earn Cookie Dough, which can be used to pay for Girl Scout camp, purchases in the council shop, councilsponsored activities, and national and international Girl Scout Destinations. Cookie Boss 101 Cookie Boss 101 pairs fun and informative short activities based on each of the skills that girls learn while participating in the Cookie Program. Each activity prepares them for the 2018 Cookie Program while teaching valuable life skills. They will earn a skill bracelet for each of the activities completed as well as the amazing and one of a kind, Cookie Boss 101 patch! WALKABOUT WEEK During Walkabout Week, Girl Scouts walk the neighborhood selling cookies door-to-door in a residential area with adult supervision. Girls are encouraged to decorate wagons and caravans to catch customersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; eyes and help drive their cookie sales. Walkabout Week is also a great way to announce the start of the Cookie Program and generate repeat customers. When girls sell 15 boxes of Girl Scouts Cookies or more during Walkabout Week, they will earn the Walkabout Week patch.

ONE S'MORE PATCH Girls will have the opportunity to earn this limited edition, custom patch by participating in both the 2017 Fall Product Program and the 2018 Girl Scout Cookie Program. The patch will feature the girl's personalized digital avatar!

OPERATION COOKIE DROP Help us reach 1 million boxes! Operation Cookie Drop is a community service project that brings a sweet taste of home to military men and women deployed far from home. Over the last 12 years, Girl Scouts have donated more than 900,000 boxes of cookies to our military! Girls can collect donations during Walkabout Week as well as during booth sales. Girls that turn in donations for 15 boxes or more will receive a 2018 Operation Cookie Drop patch.

Earning this patch happens in two parts. First, girls must participate in the 2017 Fall Product Program, create a digital avatar, and send 12 or more emails letting customers know about the sale. Second, girls must participate in the 2018 Cookie Program and sell 300 or more boxes of cookies.

EARN WHILE YOU LEARN Thereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s more than just what is in the box! Participating in the Fall Product Program and Girl Scout Cookie Program gives girls useful skills and experiences that will last a lifetime. Plus, girls can earn some pretty cool Cookie Business badges aimed at sharpening business acumen while having a ton of fun.

Daisy Leaves Money Counts Leaf Learn money management basics including understanding different kinds of coins, how to count money, and goal-setting. Making Choices Leaf Demonstrate smart money management, such as learning the difference between needs and wants and learning how to prioritize and set goals.

Brownie Badges Meet My Customers Learn how to find, interact, and retain cookie customers. Girls will role-play good customer relations and learn how to handle money and make change. Give Back Girls learn how money and business can help others including explaining to customer how their purchases help fund troop service projects and Operation Cookie Drop.

Junior Badges Customer Insights Girls conduct market and customer research by finding out who buys cookies and gaining greater understanding of their cookie customers. Cookie CEO As an entrepreneur and CEO, girls will learn how to set a group goal, explore how businesses work, practice listening skills, and track sales.

Think Big Take your cookie business to the next level by implementing innovative selling strategies and marketing messages to help increase their box-per-girl average and find new customers in unexpected places.

Senior Badges My Portfolio Girls earning this badge will build their cookie resume and portfolio, develop a personal brand, and master interview skills. Customer Loyalty Earning this badge will help girls communicate with customers about how proceeds fund exciting new opportunities and provide need-to-know skills about customer service.

Ambassador Badge Research and Development Girls earning this badge will analyze sale trends, research how companies innovate, and leverage research and development to keep their business moving forward. Profit and Loss/ Promise and Law Girls earning this badge will develop their business mission statement and promise, work with younger Girl Scouts to share selling tips and tricks, and determine what legacy they will leave as a part of the Girl Scout Cookie Program.

Cadette Badges Business Plan Earning this badge gives girls the opportunity to write a mission statement, develop a business plan, complete a risk management assessment, and learn how to leverage this knowledge to increase their cookie customer base. Girl Scout Daisy Troop #236 and Brownie Troop #650 used their cookie proceed money to discover something new by taking a ﬁeld trip to get behind the dough of pretzel making. The girls learned about how to make freshly baked pretzels, about the importance of teamwork, how each person’s position on the job can inﬂuence the business, and how to become an entrepreneur.

Who can participate in this contest? All registered Girl Scouts from participating councils who are selling cookies during the 2017-2018 cookie season. When can girls participate? January 2-April 27, 2018 How can girls participate? By submitting their personalized Cookie Pro Résumé along with a photo. The Cookie Pro Résumé will be available for download starting in September 2017. More details will be provided on the council website. Girl Scout Troop #1752 used the power of the cookie to make comfort bags for children staying in the domestic abuse shelter. The girls used their cookie proceeds to ﬁll the bags with books, stuffed animals, and homemade ﬂeece blankets. The girls provided the bag recipients with ease and comfort during a difficult time.

New Entrepreneurial Programs – Coming Soon! Through badges like Inventor, Entrepreneur, and Social Innovator girls develop financial savvy, business skills, and innovative thinking. Be on the look-out for new entrepreneurship programs that will be added throughout the year to keep girls engaged in new and exciting opportunities. Look specifically for entrepreneurship programming designed to inspire creativity for the next generation of business owners.

Girl Scout Troop #285 laced up their hiking boots and strapped on their 30-pound packs as they took on the Appalachian Trail. Girls used their cookie proceeds to purchase ultralight gear and spent four days on the Appalachian Trail, along with biking 20 miles on the Virginia Creeper Trail. The Cadette Girl Scouts became proﬁcient in setting up their backpacking tents, meal planning and cooking, packing packs and more. 23

Choose Your Weekend Troop Camping Adventure A fun adventure in the out-of-doors awaits your troop! Each troop will have the freedom to customize a camp weekend by selecting a combination of council and troop-led activities that are most interesting to the girls. Council-led activity selections will be available contingent upon Safety Activity Checkpoints guidelines and property amenities. The base price for these events includes lodging, a nature program, and craft activity. For an additional fee, council staff will provide meals and activities such as archery, boating, and high ropes challenges. Meal and activity fees are outlined below and will be due at the time of registration. Please note that Girl Scout Daisies will not be allowed to participate in archery activities. A special Daisy activity will be offered in lieu of archery. Alpine Tower activities at Camp Mary Atkinson are limited to girls grades 4 through 12. Troop Camp Spend time exploring one of our lovely resident camps this summer with your friends while participating in swimming, archery, canoeing, and much more! Weeklong and mini sessions are designed for a group of girls and adults to attend resident camp as a unit. Join us during the summer months for a weeklong session, arriving Sunday afternoon and leaving Friday afternoon. For a mini-session, spend three days at camp. Meals are prepared in the dining hall. A troop or group must have at least six girl participants to be eligible to register for troop camp.

TROOP CAMPING BADGES Our Girl Scouts have spoken! For the third year in a row, girls have selected an outdoor theme for the Girls’ Choice badges. This year’s winning badge category? Troop Camp! Through the Girls’ Choice badges girls develop, create, and vote on what interests they want to explore during their program year. The Troop Camp badges are available for download on the council shop website and in the Volunteer Toolkit.

Join Girl Scout Brownie and Junior troops from across the council in a weekend full of badge activities and outdoor fun. Climbing the Alpine Tower “Exhilarating” is one way to describe the feeling you get when climbing the Alpine Tower! Dolphin & Dune Take an excursion to Shackleford Banks, one of the most fascinating islands on the East Coast. Over 120 wild horses roam the isolated shores of this uninhabited island. Activities can include pulling nets in a tidal flat, hiking across the island, encountering dolphins and bank ponies, and discovering the wonders of remote beaches where girls collect shells and learn about sea turtles. Girl Scout Troop #17 showed compassion, empathy, and courage as they bravely stepped in to assist their local community after Hurricane Matthew. Only a few weeks prior to the storm, the Girl Scouts of Troop #17 earned their Hurricane Awareness Patch where they learned how to track storms, how to pack a preparedness kit, and how to develop an evacuation plan. When the hurricane hit in October, the Girl Scouts took action and put their plans into motion and assisted in making repairs and rebuilding their community. The girls worked together as they helped clean up destroyed areas, served food to those without power or homes, and passed out everyday hygiene supplies to those who were impacted by the storm. 36

LIFETIME MEMBERSHIP Girl Scouts of the USA has rolled out a new lifetime membership for young alumnae! Graduating Girl Scouts or young women under the age of 30, may now purchase a lifetime membership a discounted rate of $200. Lifetime memberships demonstrate a lasting commitment to building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. Lifetime members also receive VIP invitations to events and also receive a onetime 20% coupon to our local Girl Scout shop. The new membership discount will be available starting in Fall 2017. 38

Chatham County Girl Scouts kicked-off the 2017 cookie season early with a visit from our Daisy Mobile Program Vehicle! Girls in troops #4320, #4321, #4381, #1078 and #997 gathered in the Briar Chapel Clubhouse to participate in a financial literacy skill-building event and to learn everything they need to know about being a Cookie Boss. With the help of the Daisy Mobile Program Vehicle, the girls learned about safety when selling cookies, how to best approach customers, and of course they sampled each cookie!

VOLUNTEER TOOLKIT As a Girl Scout volunteer, there are a ton of great online resources right at your fingertips! One of our most powerful online tools is our Volunteer Toolkit (VTK)! This wonderful planning resource can be accessed by troop volunteers and parents and includes meeting and year plans (including activities, supply lists, and more), troop communication tools, new programs and Journeys and a parent-view to keep up with troop activities. Troop Co-Leaders also submit their Annual Finance Report through the Volunteer Toolkit.
