GO! #girlsonly

2015 | 2016 Girl Scout Cadettes + Seniors + Ambassadors Activity Guide

We’re the Girl Scouts and we believe in the power of every girl. It is important to us that every girl have access to life-changing experiences that inspire her to do big things. And we know that one girl can make a difference and that, together, girls can change the world! Girl Scouts do a lot more than people know. They build homes for the homeless. They spend a week learning to surf and sail. They travel to incredible places like France, England, and India. They advocate for change in their neighborhoods and advocate on behalf of their local communities at their state legislature. They go sea kayaking. They challenge their fears on the Alpine Tower, and more! Most of all, Girl Scouts enjoy nonstop fun. Look inside this guide for more information about events, trainings, and special opportunities just for teens. It’s a great time to be a Girl Scout with lots of ways to get involved, have fun, explore possibilities, experience adventures, travel, and learn that anything is possible!

#girlsonly Girls want to make a difference in the world.

Dollars & Sense Financial Literacy 2016 Cookie Sale Program

During the 2015-2016 membership year, girls and troops will have the opportunity to participate in two Council-sponsored, money-earning activities.

2015 Fall Sale Program The Fall Sale Program gives girls and troops the opportunity to sell magazine subscriptions (new and renewals) and very popular nuts and candy in order to earn quick and easy startup money for their troop. This “friends & family sale” is conducted both face-to-face and via the Internet through a secure online program.

Girl Scouts can Do Gr8 Things New this year! Check out our new website where girls can create their own Fall Sale avatar and even earn a patch featuring the avatar they designed.

Fall Sale – Important Dates October 2 October 25 November 19-21

Fall Sale Program begins Fall Sale Program ends Nut and candy orders arrive

The 2016 Cookie Sale Program theme is Dream, Design, Do! The cookie sale is designed to help girls grow into leaders of courage, confidence, and character while learning five valuable life skills: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills, and business ethics. All Girl Scout troops earn proceeds for participating in the Cookie Sale Program, which can be used to carry out troop plans. Troops that sell an average of 180 boxes or more per girl are also eligible for a bonus on top of the proceeds they earn, provided they meet all other stated criteria. In 2015, the average troop earned more than $1,300 in proceeds.

Dream, Design, Do! Participating girls are also eligible to earn Superstar Destinations. Girls who qualify can earn free admission tickets to places like Carowinds, Busch Gardens, Great Wolf Lodge, movie theaters, skating centers, and bowling centers. Girls can also earn Cookie Dough—which can be used to pay for Girl Scout camp, purchases in the Council shops, and Council-sponsored events, and national and international GSUSA destinations.

Cookie Sale – Important Dates January 9-15 January 16 March 6

The Five Skills: What Girls Learn Selling Cookies Goal Setting

Learning how to set a goal individually and as a group and then creating a plan to develop cooperation and team building.

Business Ethics

Decision Making

2

Money Management

Initial orders are delivered Cookie Sale Program starts Cookie Sale Program ends

3

Taking cookie orders, handling customers’ money, and gaining valuable life skills around financial literacy.

People Skills

4

Learning how to talk with and listen to people, as well as working with different kinds of people while selling cookies, will help girls develop healthy relationships and conflict resolution skills.

Being honest and responsible at every step of the cookie sale. Girls’ business ethics reinforce the positive values they develop as Girl Scouts. All of these skills will serve them for a lifetime, and can be listed on employment and school applications and resumes. Also, many girls improve their self-esteem and confidence by participating in the Cookie Sale Program.

Girl Scout Silver Award Going for the Girl Scout Silver Award gives a Girl Scout Cadette the chance to show that she is a leader who is organized, determined, and dedicated to improving her community. Earning the award puts girls among an exceptional group who have used their knowledge and leadership skills to make a difference in the world. Step one to earn your Girl Scout Silver Award is to go on a Girl Scout Cadette Journey. Once you complete your Journey, the suggested minimum time for earning your Girl Scout Silver Award is 50 hours. You can start by planning the time in parts, then dividing it up by the steps. As a Girl Scout, you are committed to doing your very best with each step. How much time needed per step is different for every Girl Scout. Each step you and/or your award team take toward making a difference in the world around you gives you a great chance to learn and grow, and make your award project an amazing one!

For More Information:

Girl Scout Gold Award

• Come to a religious awards workshop (open to girls, troop leaders, and parents) which are held throughout the year.

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest and most prestigious award that Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors can earn. A girl earning the Girl Scout Gold Award will be joining the ranks of generations of young women who have made a difference in their communities both locally and globally. The Girl Scout Gold Award follows the Standards of Excellence and challenges you to develop yourself as a leader, achieve the Girl Scout Leadership Outcomes, and make a mark on your community that creates a lasting impact on the lives of others.

• Go to the P.R.A.Y. organization’s website to learn current options available for each denomination/faith at www.praypub.org • Contact the program director at 800.284.4475.

Girl Scouting’s Highest Awards The Golden Eagle of Merit, the highest award in Girl Scouting from 1916 to 1919, marked the beginning of a long tradition of using prestigious awards to recognize girls who make a difference in their communities and in their own lives. In 1980, Girl Scouts introduced the Girl Scout Gold Award, its highest honor earned by Girl Scout Seniors and Ambassadors, along with the Girl Scout Silver Award earned Girl Scout Cadettes. Today these two awards are the highest of the Girl Scout experience.

Fulfilling the requirements for the Girl Scout Gold Award starts with the completion of two Girl Scout Senior or Ambassador Journeys, or having earned the Silver Award and completing one Senior or Ambassador Journey. Each Journey you complete gives you the skills you need to plan and implement your Take Action project. After you have fulfilled the Journey(s) requirement, 80 hours is the suggested minimum hours for the steps: identifying an issue, investigating it thoroughly, getting help and building a team, creating a plan, presenting your plan, gathering feedback, taking action, and educating and inspiring others. The suggested minimum hours are not a rule; they are a guide for you to plan your time in achieving your goal.

Scholarships and Awards Jane S. Barringer Award Girl Scout Gold Award recipients are eligible to apply for the Jane S. Barringer Award. This award is a cash scholarship established to honor Mrs. Barringer, an outstanding teen advisor. A group of her former Girl Scouts, along with Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines, has instituted an award in her name to be given to an individual who embodies the principles and spirit “Mrs. B” works to instill. Mrs. Barringer was recently recognized for 50 years of membership in Girl Scouting.

Misty Crabtree Eastham Memorial Scholarship The Misty Crabtree Eastham Endowment was established to honor the memory of lifelong Girl Scout Misty Crabtree Eastham, and provides scholarships for Gold Award recipients to help defray college expenses. As a girl in foster care who earned her Girl Scout Gold Award, Misty felt that Girl Scouting had a tremendous impact on her life and provided opportunities that she may never have had a chance to pursue. This scholarship embodies Misty’s sense of selflessness, generosity, drive, and determination.

For more information about these and other Council-sponsored scholarships, please visit the Council website.

We shall know Girl Scouting through living, and we may make it so much a part of our everyday life that people will recognize the Girl Scout spirit and say, ‘Why, of course. She is a Girl Scout.’ Juliette Gordon Low
