spectacular ways to spend your summer...great camps, adventure trips and special events!
ck a B d n a n o o M e h t Mission: To
Hi Parents & Caregivers! Have you ever felt so excited that you just can’t wait? The feeling you get when you’re looking forward to something with friends or when you’re thinking about new and fun things that could happen? We love that feeling! At Girl Scout Camp, girls have new experiences that give them that superexcited, jumping, giggling, butterflies-in-the-stomach feeling. Experiences like exploring the outdoors, creating their own masterpiece, climbing the challenge tower, kayaking down the river, or going on an adventure trip with new friends. Camp is designed to give every girl a chance to succeed, build friendships, challenge herself, and have fun.
Anything is possible! This summer, your camper will make new friends, have tons of fun, and have more “wow” moments than she’s ever imagined. Anything is possible at Girl Scout Camp – the sky is the limit!

come check us out! Girl Scout Camp is for Every Girl! Girl Scout Camp is all about trying new things, meeting new friends and having fun. Whether you’re interested in horses, archery, swimming, canoes, hiking, adventure trips or are looking to try everything, you can have a great summer at Girl Scout Camp! Camp is open to all girls ages 5-17.
Girl Scout Camp Offers Leadership Experience Camp is full of fun activities—archery, swimming, climbing the Alpine Tower, eating in the dining hall, cooking out, and making friends. The Girl Scout Leadership Experience is central to our summer resident camp program. Through activities and experiences, girls will gain skills to become leaders who are inspired to make the world a better place.
CAMP OPEN HOUSE Want to see what attending camp is like? Check out our resident camps before summer begins. Bring the family and a picnic lunch to see it all—the tents, cabins, features, and more as you explore camp! Staff will be on hand to answer your questions and help you pick the perfect camp session. Registration is not required, but encouraged. A confirmation packet with directions to the camp will be sent to all registered participants.

FREQUENTLY ASKED questions Q: Who can attend Girl Scout resident camp?
Q: Who are the camp staff?
A: Camp is open to all girls ages 5-17. Some programs may have entering grade requirements or prerequisites, which must be met to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all campers.
A: Camp staff are enthusiastic, talented, and caring. They are selected based on maturity, program experience, and genuine desire to work with girls. All counselors are at least 18 years old. While most camp staff are from North Carolina, we work with Camp Counselors USA to recruit diverse staff from many different countries around the world. These staff members share their culture with the campers through camp activities.
Q: My camper is not a member of Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines but would like to attend camp. Can she attend, and are there additional fees? A: Girl Scout camps are open to all girls. Girls who are not members of our council will pay an additional $50 on their total camp bill.
Q: Where will campers sleep? A: Girls are grouped in units. Depending on their program choice, girls may sleep in cabins or platform tents. Each unit has trained counselors housed in separate quarters within the living unit, but close enough to supervise campers. In select sessions, counselors may sleep in the same cabin as girls at Camp Hardee and Camp Mary Atkinson.
Q: Can my camper attend camp with a buddy/friend?
2 01 4 S U M M E R F U N G U I D E
A: Yes, girls can attend camp with a buddy. During registration, a buddy’s name can be listed. Buddies must be in the same age group and both register for the same session. Sorry, we cannot honor requests for more than one buddy.
8
Q: What type of training does camp staff receive? A: Before camp begins, staff attend an intensive on-site training, which includes activity programming, outdoor skills, songs, games, first aid and safety, emergency procedures, team building, program age level characteristics, dealing with homesickness, and more.
Q: My potential camper has special needs. Can she come to camp? A: Each year, many girls with special needs are able to participate in our camp program. Girls must be able to function in a 6:1 girl-to-adult ratio. Special needs may include physical, medical, developmental, dietary, behavioral, or communicative. It is our hope to be able to serve all girls wishing to attend resident camp. Providing a safe and positive experience to all campers is of utmost importance to us. The council reserves the right to make decisions of participation based on the extent of the girl’s needs and our ability to meet those needs in the camp setting, as well as other factors as deemed appropriate. We are concerned about the health and safety of all campers, and we want to ensure we have appropriate professional and medical services to meet needs. Please contact the camp director at 800.284.4475 to discuss the camp program and nature of your girl’s needs before registering for camp.
Q: My camper has special dietary needs or restrictions. How are menus managed at camp? With regard to special diets, menus for programs are planned with the general camp population and economy of associated costs in mind. A; We will make every attempt to provide for special dietary needs within the scope of our regular menus. Please contact the camp director at 800.284.4475 for more information.
Q: Can my camper call home during the week? A: No, we encourage independence and self-reliance. Campers are not permitted to make or receive phone calls. The camp director will contact parents if the camper has a medical problem, is excessively homesick, or has an emergency. Please let your child know before camp that she will not be able to call home and that you are comfortable with this. It is important that you do not send your child to camp with a cell phone, as there is little or no coverage—and, most importantly, it will send a conflicting message to other campers. We are partners with you in your child’s summer experience, and we hope that you will support us in making camp happy and fun for everyone.
Q: What measures are taken to ensure my child’s safety while at camp? A: We are dedicated to providing safe and secure camps for our campers. Each camp follows the guidelines set by the American Camp Association as well as those set by Girl Scouts of the USA through Safety Activity Checkpoints. Staff are housed in close proximity to camper cabins and tents, and buildings and grounds are checked nightly. All camp staff and adults spending the night at camp must successfully complete a criminal background check.
Q: If our plans change, how do I cancel my child’s session? Can I get a refund? A: If your plans change and your camper can no longer attend her camp session, please notify the council’s helpdesk as soon as possible. Once you register for a session, you have made a commitment to that session and are responsible for payment in full. No refunds are available unless you have a medical emergency with a written doctor’s statement, or the session has a waitlist and we can fill your camper’s space. In those cases, a refund minus the non-refundable deposit will be considered. Please see page 27 for our refund and cancellation policy.
Q: Can I visit my camper during a camp session?
Q: When is the last day to register for camp?
A: No, to help maintain program continuity and ensure the safety of campers, visitors are only allowed at camp during open house and arrival and departure hours.
A: Camp registrations will close two weeks prior to the session your camper wishes to attend. Exceptions can be made if space is available once registration has been closed. Please note that your camper must have a doctor’s signature on her health history form in order to attend camp. Campers must have had an exam within 12 months of the last day of her session.
Q: What happens if my camper has a difficult time adjusting to camp? A: Camp staff will do everything possible to help girls adjust to camp life. However, resident camp staff reserves the right to send any girl home who consistently exhibits inappropriate behavior or endangers herself or others. The girl’s parent/guardian is responsible for picking her up, and fees will not be refunded.

What’s in Store at Camp! Camp is a special place, full of opportunities for growth and personal development. Girls look forward to all the activities and experiences that make camp so special. Camp emphasizes opportunities for a girl to value herself, further develop her skills, build relationships and participate in the camp community, appreciate the natural world, and have fun in a safe, healthy environment. Girls will be taken care of by quality camp staff that truly cares, they will bunk in facilities that will provide a comfortable stay, and they will make new friends and create memories that will last a lifetime. Session themes do not affect the basic camp activities (swimming, canoeing, archery, arts & crafts, etc.). Basic activities go on regardless of theme all summer. Themes affect things such as decorations, music, skits, costumes, etc. A typical day’s schedule will vary based on the camp and program but will be similar to the following:

Camp Kaleidoscope Returns to Camp Graham! For the past 35 years, Camp Kaleidoscope has been a huge part of Camp Graham. Through Camp Kaleidoscope, chronically ill children are given a chance to take a break from hospitals and have fun in the outdoors. The boys and girls who attend Camp Kaleidoscope have non-communicable chronic diseases such as cancer, asthma, kidney disease, or heart disease. Doctors, nurses, and other professionals from the Department of Pediatrics at Duke University Medical Center spend the week with the campers in the Kaleidoscope Program. They participate in all aspects of camp. For most of these kids, going to Camp Graham is their first camping experience because they cannot go camping without doctors, nurses, therapists, and special equipment. Without the Kaleidoscope program, many of the children would never have a chance to experience the fun of summer camp!

These volunteer-run day camps are offered at various locations throughout the council and provide an enlightening experience for girls to explore new things and meet new friends. Teens have the special opportunity to serve as Program Aides at some camps.
Girl in the Curl July 13 – 18 For girls entering grades 7-12 Take a trip to the beach to spend some time with your camp friends learning to surf! The Wrightsville Beach Surf Camp will teach you to surf the waves after three days of lessons at Kure Beach. Camp at a public campground and enjoy a dip in the pool and cooking over a campfire. Girls must be able to swim 100 yards, tread water for five minutes, stay underwater for short periods of time, and lift a lightweight surfboard.
USS Yorktown July 20 – 25 For girls entering grades 7-9 You will journey to historic Charleston Harbor for the world’s best shipboard camping experience. Stay aboard the “Fighting Lady,” the USS Yorktown, a real United States WWII aircraft carrier. While onboard, you will explore oceanography, participate in the AIR (Aviation in Residence) program and be underwater in a submarine. Then explore the fun and culture that Charleston has to offer before heading back to camp for a campfire on Thursday night.
High Adventures July 27 – August 1 For girls entering grades 8-12 Ever wanted to climb a real rock face? We will start by experiencing the Alpine Tower and bouldering Grotto at camp. Then as we head west, we will stop at one of Triangle Rock Club’s gyms and learn and practice some skills that will help us be successful. We will camp in a public campground and have fun, hiking and exploring.

Camp Costs
Registering for Camp
Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines understands the value of camp and continues to provide financial support to offer these important programs at affordable rates. Camp fees cover most direct costs—such as food, program supplies, supplementary health and accident insurance, and camp counselor salaries.
Register online through the council online registration entry program (C.O.R.E.) by visiting www.nccoastalpines.org and clicking on the link to C.O.R.E. at the top of the home page. If you have any questions about registration or your C.O.R.E. account, please contact the Help Desk at helpdesk@nccoastalpines.org or 800-284-4475. Please note that emailed, faxed, and hand-delivered registrations will NOT be accepted.
Indirect costs— such as planning and administering the program, registration, and property maintenance—are costs subsidized by the council. Our council's total expense for a week at one of our three Girl Scout resident summer camps exceeds $600 per girl. Families are only asked, on average, to pay $250.
Girl Scout Camp Provides Financial Assistance Financial assistance in the form of “Camperships” enables all girls to enjoy the Girl Scout camp experience. Camperships are made possible thanks to our many generous donors and are available to currently registered Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines members who are unable to pay the total cost of a camp experience. A girl must be a registered member to be considered for a campership. For more information about camperships or to apply online, please visit www.nccoastalpines.org. Applications are due by April 1, 2014.

Non-members will pay an additional $50 non-member fee on their total camp bill. Note: Fees for Camp Extras are due at the time of registration.
Deposit All registrations require a $75 non-refundable deposit that will be applied toward your camp fee.
Early Registration Incentive All registrations placed prior to March 31, 2014 will be billed at the discounted rate published in this program guide. Any registration received after March 31, 2014 will be billed an additional $25.
Bring a New Buddy Rewards Program Watch our website (www.nccoastalpines.org) for details on our new Bring a New Buddy incentive for returning campers who recruit girls to attend our camps for the first time.
Have fun at camp and get paid too! Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines is hiring staff for our resident camps. Positions include unit counselors, waterfront staff, program staff, kitchen staff, and health supervisors. Staff members receive a salary, meals and housing, and training. If you are 18 or older and would like to know more about job opportunities, please contact the Summer Camp Team summercamp@nccoastalpines.org or 800.284.4475. Apply online at www.nccoastalpines.org. Girl Scouts – North Carolina Coastal Pines is an Affirmative Action Equal Opportunity Employer.
Final Payment Date Camp fees must be paid in full by May 1, 2014. Your camper’s registration will be cancelled and no refund will be made if payment is not received by the deadline. Due to the number of girls on the waitlist, your camper’s slot may be filled immediately so please be mindful of this important date. Payments may be made online in C.O.R.E. or via check, credit card, or Cookie Dough at one of our Service Centers. Financial assistance is also available for those in need. To request a hard copy of the registration form, please contact the Raleigh Service Center at 800-284-4475.
Paying for Camp the Cookie Way: Camp as a Superstar Destination Cookie Dough earned during the Cookie Sale Program may be applied toward resident camp sessions, special summer events, trading posts, day camps, and council-sponsored events. The easiest way to apply your cookie dough toward these activities is to choose this option on the Superstar Destinations survey. For more information about paying for camp using Cookie Dough, please contact the Help Desk at helpdesk@nccoastalpines.org or 800-284-4475.
Cancellation and Refund Policy Residential Camp Fees A significant amount of planning time and money are spent several months prior to the start of camp. It is also difficult to fill open slots as the summer approaches. Therefore, it is important to contact the council registrar as soon as possible if you know that your camper is unable to attend camp. • If your camper has a medical emergency that prevents her from attending camp, a refund request less the nonrefundable deposit will be considered if submitted with a written doctor’s statement two weeks prior to the camp session. • If your camper becomes unable to attend camp for other reasons, the council may be able to refund your camper’s session fees less the deposit if your camper’s slot is filled from the waitlist. • If the council cancels the camp session, all fees (including the deposit) will be refunded. • If your camper is on a waitlist and cannot be placed in a session, the total fee (including the deposit) will be refunded.
Camp Extras Fees Fees for trading post gift cards, camp care packages, T-shirts and photos are fully refundable with a two-week notice prior to the camp session. Please email your cancellation notice and request for refund to helpdesk@nccoastalpines.org.
Day Camp Girl Scouts—North Carolina Coastal Pines reserves the right to cancel an event due to insufficient registration, acts of nature, or any other reason beyond its control. Council-sponsored events are held rain or shine, unless inclement weather adversely affects the program. If there is a need to cancel or reschedule, registered participants will be notified and refunds will be processed accordingly. For more information on the council’s cancellation and refund policy, please visit www.nccoastalpines.org.
