GSNETX Activities and Events AUGUST Solar Eclipse Days Saturday, August 19, 10am-12pm Monday, August 21, 10am-2pm STEM Center of Excellence at Camp Whispering Cedars Cost: $5 per girl Contact: programs@gsnetx.org On August 21, 2017, millions of people across the United States will gather to see nature’s most wondrous spectacle — an eclipse of the Sun. It is a scene of unimaginable beauty; the Moon blocks the Sun, daytime becomes a twilight, and the Sun’s corona shimmers in the darkened sky. Girl Scout families are invited to the STEM Center of Excellence where we’ll discover the science behind the Great American Eclipse, make solar s’mores, and so much more. Peanut Butter Buddy Service Patch August and September Cost: Free Contact: programs@gsnetx.org Awards Earned: Brownie My Best Self, Junior Staying Fit, Cadette Eating for Beauty Be a Peanut Butter Buddy this fall! Through this service patch program Girl Scouts explore what it takes to keep their bodies fueled and lend a helping hand to those struggling to do the same. Complete the steps to learn all about nutrition and fitness, and then help others meet their nutritional needs.

OCTOBER Goodwill Good Turn Service Patch October 1-31 Cost: Free Contact: programs@gsnetx.org Awards Earned: Goodwill Good Turn Patch Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas is teaming up with Goodwill Industries of Dallas, Northeast Texas, and East Texas to help youth and adults with disabilities and disadvantaging conditions. First, you’ll discover how your donation makes a difference in the lives of Goodwill Employees. Then, you’ll collect items to help fund job training in your community. Be sure to complete the online reporting form to receive your free patch.

New Troop, No Problem at the STEM Center Under the Texas Sky Sunday, October 15, 2pm-4pm STEM Center of Excellence at Camp Whispering Cedars Contact: stem@gsnetx.org Calling new troop leaders! Do you want to see how easy and fun leading a fun STEM troop activity can be? New Troop Leaders sign up with their troop and are given all of the materials and support needed to lead interactive STEM activities with their Girl Scout troop. Camp Skills Workshop Saturday, October 21, 9am-6pm Southern Sector Service Center Cost: $25.00 each per girl, $30.00 per adult completing TR301 and TR302 Camp Certifications, $25.00 per Safety Wise Adult (not completing Camp Certifications) Contact: Lynn Wilbur at gs156lynn@gmail.com Learn and practice camping skills with girls at the same time! This workshop has an option to certify adults in both TR301: GSNETX Camping & and TR302: On the Road Camping. Topics include Pyrotechniques (fire building and safety), Germ Warfare (health and sanitation), Gearing Up (packing and gear), Weather or Not (coping with weather surpirses), What’s Cookin’? (meal planning, food preparation, and knife safety), and Inn Over Your Head (tent purchase, care, and pitching). NOTE: Adults who wish to receive certification are required to also attend an event pre-meeting on September 27 from 6:30-10 pm at JoAnn Fogg Service Center. Texas Rose Festival Saturday, October 21* Tyler, TX Contact: programs@gsnetx.org Awards Earned: East Texas Patch (1 of 3) A Texas tradition since 1933, Girl Scouts can come and smell the roses (literally!) at the Texas Rose Festival. Come see the coronation of the Rose Queen, or participate in or watch the Rose Parade!* From garden tours, to floral shows, arts and crafts, there is plenty to do and see at this fabulous East Texas festival! *Anyone participating in the rose parade needs to contact Hillary St. John by August 31. He and Me - Camp Bette Perot Friday – Sunday, October 27 – 29 Ages: B,J,C,S,A (No Daisies) Cost: $60 per person Time: Friday check-in between 6:00 & 8:00 p.m. check-out Sunday by noon Contact: customercare@gsnetx.org, 972.349.2403 Picture yourself aiming for a bull’s-eye on the archery range and enjoying the sights of camp during a horseback trail ride, all while spending time with your dad, grandfather, uncle, or other favorite male! You’ll also have time to make new friends while eating at the dining hall with everyone since meals are provided from Saturday breakfast until breakfast on Sunday. Although you’ll have lots of time to spend together this weekend, girls are assigned cabins/ tents with other girls and males will be housed in cabins/ tents with other males in the same unit as the girl they came with.

Girls are asked to collect and drop off new or gently used blankets to any of Sleep Experts’ 40 North Texas locations, the GSNETX Paris Service Center, or GSNETX East Texas Regional Center. Adult Retreat Friday – Sunday, November 10-12 Camp Bette Perot ADULTS ONLY Cost: $60 per adult Contact: learning@gsnetx.org Extremely popular adults only weekend at camp – in our 11th year! You’ll sleep in cabins and take meals in the dining hall, just like the girls do at summer camp. Bring your friends! Spend your day taking fun classes, and maybe do some archery or go on a trail ride. Who knows? There are usually more than 50 class options to choose from – so there is something for everyone. Our theme this year is “Creature Comforts”.

DECEMBER Silver Lining Service Patch December & January Cost: Free Contact: programs@gsnetx.org The Silver Lining Patch Program connects Girl Scouts with residents of nursing homes, retirement communities, assisted living, or adult day care facilities to improve their quality of life through acts of kindness and in-person visits. Connect with each other as you enjoy an indoor craft, optional horseback riding, and an evening of memory making around the campfire. You’ll even take home a limited edition Camp Bette Perot family camp patch to help preserve your memories! Meals: Each family is responsible for providing their own meals. A shared kitchen area with a refrigerator, stove, and oven is available in each unit.

You’ll explore coding through fun activities designed with you in mind! Together you’ll build lifelong memories as you experience various hands-on activities and explore part of camp while participating in a horseback trail ride. Since the focus is on having fun with each other and not cooking, meals from Saturday breakfast through Sunday breakfast will be provided. Meet women studying or working in the engineering field, explore a variety of hands-on activities, and watch exciting demonstrations.

Women in Sports Day at SMU February SMU Cost: $5 per person Contact: programs@gsnetx.org SMU Women’s Basketball invites Girl Scouts to their National Girls and Women in Sports game. Enjoy a women’s basketball game and see SMU Athletics honor women is sports, recognize Mustang female student-athletes, and enjoy a post-game all-sports clinic taught by SMU female student-athletes.

MARCH Communi-TREE March 1- April 30 Cost: Free Award Earned: Communi-TREE patch Contact: programs@gsnetx.org Grab your naturalist hat and get ready to know trees! You’ll explore the importance of trees, explore trees around you, and plant a Communi-TREE. By complreting the CommuniTREE requirements girls will earn a free patch during this partnership with the Texas Trees Foundation. Stream Team Spring Fling! Saturday, March 10 Contact: programs@gsnetx.org Hands-on experiments, quality time in nature, and lots of fun are in store for the second annual Stream Team Spring Fling! Tejas Riders Ages 12+ *Award Earning! The Tejas Riders are an award-winning, elite group of Girl Scouts who have advanced equestrian skills. They represent the council at exciting events like the Mesquite Rodeo and act as guides for younger Girl Scouts. The Tejas Riders also give countless hours of service to the equestrian program at Camp Bette Perot, while also building leadership skills. The girls must be currently registered and be 12 years of age by September 1. Transportation to and from all events is the responsibility of the girl’s parent or guardian.
