FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Is my girl ready for resident camp? Take our quiz to find out! gsnetx.org/ready4camp If your girl has never spent the night away from home, you may want to start her with a Day/Twilight camp session (pg.24). After that, a four-day session might be perfect for her to experience.
Can my camper call home? No. Phone access while at camp distracts from the camp experience. Do not promise your camper that they may call home. If there is an emergency with your child, a member of the camp staff will contact you. Camp contact information is provided in the parent guide in case you need to contact the camp.
Can non-Girl Scouts attend camp? Yes! Our camps are open to all girls, even if they are not active in a Girl Scout troop during the school year. Campers will need to register as a Girl Scout member for insurance purposes prior to registering for a camp session. Contact the Customer Care team at (972) 349-2403 or customercare@ gsnetx.org for more information, or visit gsnetx.org/join.
How can I contact my camper while she's at camp? You may mail letters to camp, or letters may be left at check-in for delivery. Please list camper’s first and last name. Please focus your message on the positives of camp: friendship, new experiences, new foods, etc. Please do not send food! You may also send “Bunk Notes” through our photo service Bunk 1.
Is technology allowed at camp? No electronic devices are permitted at camp. If an electronic device is brought to camp, it will be kept in the office and returned when the camper is picked up. This includes, but is not limited to, cell phones, smart watches, iPods, tablets, laptops, and other portable electronics. The camp, staff members, and Girl Scouts are not liable for the loss of, or damage to, any electronic or technology device brought to camp.
Can my daughter go to camp with a buddy? Yes, your daughter may request a buddy. Only one buddy may be requested per session. Buddies are requested in CampDoc. Please make sure both buddies are registered for the same camp session before you make your buddy request.
Are girls allowed to have visitors? For the safety of all girls, visitors are not allowed at camp.
Are food and snacks provided? Most meals are prepared by food service personnel and served family-style in the dining hall. Snacks are provided at designated times. Dietary restrictions should be listed in CampDoc and confirmed via email to camp@gsnetx.org for Camp Gambill, Rocky Point, and Bette Perot and stem@gsnetx.org for The STEM Center, two weeks before her session to confirm that we can adequately meet her dietary needs. Please do not send food via mail or delivery service to your camper.
Please see full Resident Camp FAQs online at gsnetx.org/camp and read the parent guide for more information. ☆4☆

Four Ways Girl Scouts Builds Girl Leaders in the Outdoors Since 1912, girls have explored and strengthened their outdoor skills and commitment to environmental stewardship through Girl Scouting. Guided by supportive adults and peers, Girl Scouts discover the wonders of nature, experience the thrill of adventure, and challenge themselves and one another to reach new heights. These experiences hone their outdoor and leadership skills, inspire them to take action to protect the environment, and reinforce friendships to last a lifetime.
In other words, when girls participate in Girl Scouts’
Outdoor Competence Girls learn to engage safely and responsibly in a range of outdoor activities.
Outdoor Interest Girls develop a love of nature and an interest in the natural world.
and learn from and succeed in them.
Environmental Stewardship Girls come to understand how their behaviors impact the environment and what they can do to protect the natural world.
Why do these outcomes matter? Confidence lays the foundation for a life of outdoor engagement, and spending time in the tranquility of nature has well-established implications for a person’s social, emotional, cognitive, and physical health and formation of values. For example, studies show that: • Exposure to greenspaces restores people’s attention and improves cognitive functioning.1 • Spending time outdoors reduces people’s cortisol, a stress-inducing hormone,2 and lowers blood pressure.3 • Learning new skills in nature increases people’s self-confidence.4 • Outdoor recreational experiences in early childhood strongly and positively influence people’s environmental attitudes,5 values,6 and behaviors,7 with experiences like hiking and camping cultivating a sense of responsibility for nature.8 1 Berman, Marc G., Jonides, John, & Kaplan, Stephen (2008). Is she ready for camp? Are you? Getting your Girl Scout into the outdoors early and often will lead to great things (see page 5). Because of its small size, Camp Gambill is a perfect first sleep-away experience for new campers. Small cabin groups and overall session size mean more consistent and positive interaction with camp staff and fellow campers. Talk about camp with your Girl Scout. Let her lead the way in choosing what her summer adventure will be. Need some guidance? Check out our Ready for Camp quiz: gsnetx.org/ready4camp ☆6☆
s she arrived at Camp Gambill in the summer of 2018, the normal jitters appeared. Would she know anyone? Would she make a friend? Her eyes brightened as she saw a familiar face. "That's when we really bonded," said Emily about her long-distance camp friendship with Kylie. The girls' friendship started at Camp Bette Perot in 2017 and blossomed at Gambill in 2018. Last year, they planned their summer adventure together and have their hearts set on two weeks at Perot this summer. "I love the idea of camp friendships. It makes them value their time together more," said Emily's, mom Nicole. At first, they would go months without contact, but as they have gotten older, staying in touch has gotten easier. "They now text, call, and use social media to keep in touch constantly!" Kylie's mom, Denise, remarked. Even though they're miles apart, these Girl Scouts know their friendship is golden. "It's good to know I have a really good friend even when I don't see her every day", Kylie said. Do you have a camp friendship story? Share it with us @gsnetx or email media@gsnetx.org

#campership
H
ow much impact can one week of summer camp have on a girl’s sense of self? Ask GSNETX Cadette Amiya Herbert. Amiya had a tendency to be withdrawn and shy, refraining from activities that focused attention on her. Yet, she had long desired to attend a Girl Scout camp. Her wish came true last summer when she was selected for a summer camp experience funded in part through a “campership.” Her qualifying criteria for the opportunity included significant engagement in Girl Scout programming and being a candidate for the Silver Award. Finally, her week at Camp Bette Perot arrived—and Amiya flourished! Recounting challenges she’d overcome, she noted that bunking with girls from surrounding counties encouraged her to step outside her comfort zone and make new friends. To read more about how Amiya’s campership experience helped her grow in courage, confidence, and character, visit gsnetx/news.

fter 35 years of outstanding leadership in the GSNETX Equestrian program, Brady Brownlow has retired. Fond memories and farewell wishes flooded in. If you have a memory to share, email media@gsnetx.org.
Pictured – Sisters Myra (L) and Maddi “Brady has given my girls so much confidence. His love for the girls is indescribable and he will forever be missed.” —Melanie Wied “Mr. Brady probably doesn’t even know that he had such a profound impact on [Hannah’s] confidence from the very first time she rode a horse! Thank you, Brady, for all your work with these girls. You made all the difference!”—Paige Anderson “He has taught thousands of us what the meaning of ‘Labor of Love’ & ‘Hard Work and Dedication’ really means.” —Kaitlyn Yost Armstrong “I am so honored that two of my girls made it to the Tejas Rider program. He has the ability to make each girl feel truly cared for (he did that for me too, way back in the summer of 1987).” —Linda Blake “Tejas Riders helped me from being a shy girl to a confident woman. I learned more than just horses. I found me.”—Allie Wong Cochran “Brady has helped instill courage, confidence, and character with innumerable Girl Scouts for the past 30-plus years.” —Carrie McComas

hether she’s intimidated by STEM or eager to expand on her existing interest in a field, Remi The STEM Center is her summer connection. The wide array of camp themes can demystify the subject matter for daunted girls and nurture those planning STEM careers. Girl Scout Senior Reese Kirkham encountered this inspiration firsthand. An avid fan of all things STEM-related, Reese attended NASA’s Space Academy for four years, and fueled her passion for math and science. Then, last summer, she enrolled in the Biomedical Engineering camp at The STEM Center, where she dissected a squid and created a 3D-printed robotic prosthetic hand. Something clicked for Reese as the hands-on learning connected with STEM knowledge that had before been more abstract. She is now interested in becoming a doctor or surgeon and has applied for several biomedical engineering internships. Reese encourages other girls to register for a STEM Center camp. “If you have a passion and enjoy learning different STEM-related skills with other talented young ladies, you will definitely enjoy a Girl Scout STEM camp!”

Raising Awesome Girls
5. She’ll meet new mentors.
Having a variety of awesome role models will help your girl see the many ways to be successful and happy in life. And the incredibly supportive staff and counselors at your girl’s summer camp are ready to step up to the plate and inspire!
6. She’ll gain independence.
7 Ways Summer Camp Brings Out Her Best By Girl Scouts of the USA ☙
S
ummer is when some of the most fun childhood memories are made, but did you know that it’s also an awesome opportunity for your girl to grow, learn, and become her best self? Here are seven amazing benefits your girl will get from her summer camp experience.
there’s plenty of room at the top for your girl to take charge and flex her muscle, both when it comes to outdoor adventure and crucial leadership skills that will last her a lifetime.
1.
and tune in to nature. Getting out in nature, soaking up the sun, or dashing inside during a sudden downpour is way more exciting than any app she might have on her phone and is all part of the adventure of camp. Unplugging for a while will keep her more present and truly enjoying every moment instead of simply watching it from a screen.
She’ll make new friends. There’s nothing quite like giggling over games in the bunk or singing songs with new besties around a campfire. That’s why it’s actually good to send her to camp where she might not know many (or any) other girls! Having a diverse group of friends, not just kids she knows from school, will broaden her horizons and help her see her own worth, too.
2. She’ll see all she can be.
In an all-girl environment like Girl Scout summer camp, girls are more comfortable trying new outdoor activities, and they get to take the lead every single time—meaning

3. She’ll turn off her phone
4. She’ll grow her grit. She might
scrape a knee or elbow while she’s away—and that’s a good thing! When she learns to get back up after minor setbacks, like scrapes and bumps, she’s building her resilience and learning that she’s a lot tougher than she thinks.
Being away from home—especially if that’s a new thing for her!—might be a bit intimidating to both your daughter and you. But having that time away to explore and try activities on her own will make her more self-reliant and able to discover new things to share and teach you when she returns home.
7. She’ll have tons of time for
play. Playtime is anything but a waste of time. In fact, studies show that play allows the neurons in a child’s brain to form new connections—and that this rewiring helps boost emotional intelligence, decision-making skills, creativity, and problem-solving abilities. The truth is, sending your girl off to camp is one of the best gifts you can give her. The fun, outdoor adventure, and friends will enrich her life and— perhaps without her even noticing— give her the courage, people skills, and leadership chops to succeed at whatever she sets her mind to.
