The

STEM The Activity: Cup Stack Programming

The Objective: With materials found at home, learn the basics of programming by getting a “robot” to stack cups in a specific pattern.

The Facts: • An algorithm is a list of steps that you can follow to finish a task. A recipe is an example of an algorithm; it tells you how to cook a dish by following step-by-step instructions. • A program is an algorithm that has been coded into something that can be run by a machine. Computer programmers code algorithms to create programs that are used for technology • A bug is part of a program that does not work correctly. When programmers find and fix issues in their algorithm or program, they are doing something called debugging. • Programmers use different symbols or languages to code. For this project, you should code all your moves using only the five arrows in the symbol key.

Fun for the whole family! What You'll Need: • •

Adult supervision A family member to play the role of "Robot"

• • •

• Paper • Pens/Pencils Paper or plastic cups (about 10)

Symbol key (below) Cup stacking patterns (below)

Let's Get Started!

step 1

Gather some paper, a pen or pencil, and cups. Then choose a cup stacking pattern.

step 2

Review the symbol key and use the symbols to write your own algorithm. This algorithm will provide your "robot" with step-by-step instructions on how to stack the cups in the pattern.

step 3

Ask yourself some questions to help get you started. How many cups will you need? What symbols will you use first? Are any cups upside down? How will you write the algorithm to flip a cup?

step 4

Symbol Key:

Try the algorithm. Does it work? If not, don't worry! Programmers often find problems or bugs when testing their programs. It's important to check your work and debug your program to make sure it works correctly.

step 5

Once you have decided that the algorithm is ready to be tested, find a family member or friend to be your “robot”. Have the “robot” use the algorithm to stack the cups.

step 6

Keep the fun going by writing an algorithm for another cup stacking pattern. Find another family member to friend to be the “robot”!

Gold Award Spotlight

Ayron Walker Confidence in The Skin You're In

A

healthy selfimage is vital to the development of confidence in young minds. Ayron Walker from Troop 9436 made this issue the focus of her Gold Award project by authoring the novel, The Skin You’re In, addressing colorism – the idea that lighter skin is revered over darker skin. Recognizing that youth aren’t always equipped with the realworld support to nurture a positive self-image, she created diverse characters relatable to those experiencing prejudice.Ayron says she hopes the characters in her book will provide readers with a feeling they’re not just reading a book, but going on a journey with a friend. The Skin You’re In is available free online at Wattpad.com. Ayron Graduated from Village Tech Schools in 2018. 

N Name: Naomi Troop: 4261 PGL: Junior

Girls of Courage, Confidence, & Character who make the World a Better Place

ine-year-old Naomi was one of Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas' inaugural Super Six sellers. The Super Six Girl Scouts include one top seller from each service area. In 2018, Naomi was one the six girls who earned a trip to Washington D.C. Naomi put the five skills of the Girl Scout Cookie Program into practice: Goal Setting, Decision Making, Money Management, People Skills and Business Ethics. As a result of participating in the Cookie Program, Naomi

has had success in other areas. She attributes her perfect score on the STAAR Test's Personal Financial Literacy section to what she has learned through selling cookies. She is also confident in calculating change and counting it quickly, has honed her people and business skills, and learned the “power of not taking no for an answer.” A seasoned go-getter, Naomi reached her goal again this year and earned a trip to Walt Disney World with the Super Six. 

MAN ENOUGH TO BE A GIRL SCOUT

Eric "Elf" Foster

When and how did you first become involved with Girl Scouts? Both of my older daughters—now in their 20s—were Girl Scouts, but they were in troops that didn’t much go outdoors, while they watched their brothers camp regularly. I wanted my younger daughter to have a better and more complete experience, so we joined Brownies together when we moved back to Texas in 2012.

Outdoor Leadership Trainer for the Volunteer Empowerment Team

What are some of the best memories you have being a troop leader? Our troop went to Savannah when we were Juniors, and it was so cool to share that definitive Girl Scout experience with my daughter and my troop. I also cherish the experiences I’ve

⏵ Eric and his daughter enjoy time in Savannah, GA where the first Girl Scout Council in the United States is located.

had with my fellow trainers, which is one of the most family-like groups I’ve ever had the privilege to be among. Why do you think it’s important for men to be involved in Girl Scouts? I love our singlegender focus, but it’s still important for our girls to interact with all types of leaders and mentors. I think it’s always best for us to feature women as role models, but we need to introduce our girls to positive male influences as well. Guys definitely have something to offer here, but that should always be in the context of “among” women, not “instead of” them.

You have worked with girls and adult leaders, how does Girl Scouts impact girls and adults alike? I now work almost exclusively with training volunteer leaders, but I was part of a troop for several years, so I’ve seen its valuable impact on youth and volunteers alike. This holistic nature addresses widespread aspects of life like leadership, teamwork, citizenship, STEM, diet and cooking, physical fitness and sports, financial literacy and business sense, first aid and emergency readiness, outdoors enjoyment and stewardship, and all kinds of potential career opportunities. What other program offers all that?

Anything else interesting or funny that you’d like to share about Girl Scouts? One aspect I appreciate in particular is its unrelenting practice of progression, always building up gradually, layering on top of prior experiences and skills to reveal newer, higher levels. It is so well executed, whether it’s progression in the outdoors, STEM skills, leadership, or even in our higher awards. There’s both comfort and good strategy in taking it slow and steady in all things.  This spring, Eric was awarded the Thanks Badge, the highest volunteer honor in Girl Scouts, which recognizes ongoing commitment, leadership and service.
