Introducing our new STEM Center Executive Director, Jenn Makins

We are thrilled to welcome Jenn Makins to the Girl Scout family! Jenn is a pioneering educator with a proven track record of strategically launching and growing large-scale initiatives. In her new role, Makins will lead our dedicated team of STEM program coordinators and AmeriCorps members as they address gender parity in STEM careers and inspire the next generation of female innovators.

Before joining the Girl Scouts, Jenn served the Parish Episcopal School in Dallas for 13 years. She also previously worked for NASA Education, where she cultivated and maintained many strategic partnerships, including one with the Girl Scouts of the USA. Makins is an AAAS If/Then Ambassador and holds an M.A. in International Science and Technology Policy from George Washington University and a B.S. in Kinesiology with a special emphasis in Outdoor Education from Texas A&M University.

Happy 2023 to my Girl Scout family! We are so excited about the year ahead! Your Girl Scout is hopefully well on her way to having a successful Girl Scout Cookie Program. Did you know that she can earn her way to Summer Camp by selling 1200+ packages? In my family, my sisters and I always earned our time at Camp Texlake in Austin by selling lots of Girl Scout cookies. I LOVED summer camp when I was a girl. It was always fun to get time away from my four siblings, but I also loved the independence I felt and the fun activities I got to try, and now I can see how formative those experiences were. We believe that all girls can thrive in the outdoors. Girl Scouts is your trusted source for summer activities whether it’s a Daisy’s first year participating in your local volunteer-led Day or Twilight Camp, your Brownie’s first time at overnight camp, or your Ambassador’s experience as a Tejas Rider working the barn at Camp Bette Perot. Girls crave connection with friends, freedom to express themselves, and fun activities when school is out. Our robust summer camp offerings will give your Girl Scout and the whole family an opportunity to discover why camp life is the best life.

And, no reason to wait for summer – there are events happening right now! Our Spring events have been thoughtfully planned for your Girl Scout, your troop, and your family to learn and grow through our program.

We can’t wait to see you there!

Summer Camp registration opens at 9am on February 1. Visit gsnetx.org/camp to view our digital camp book or be on the lookout for a physical book in your mailbox soon!

No matter how long you’ve been a Girl Scout, sometimes it’s hard to remember what’s what. We hope this little glossary helps you navigate the listings in this book.

Badges and Journeys - The building blocks of Girl Scouts. They are leadership units where girls discover, connect, and take action on a variety of topics. They are progressive and grow in-depth and subject matter as your girl grows up in the program.

Event listings - There is always something available for girls and families to do. Programs are added regularly at gsnetx.org/events.

Family & Friend events - As long as one Girl Scout is in the group, brothers, cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends can join the fun.

Program Grade Level (PGL) - Age groups in Girl Scouts. Daisies are kindergarten and grade 1, Brownies are grades 2 and 3, Juniors are grades 4 and 5, Cadettes are grades 6, 7, and 8; Seniors are grades 9 and 10; and Ambassadors are grades 11 and 12.

Day and Twilight Camps are “home away from home” for campers and volunteers alike

Day and Twilight Camps are the perfect way for girls to get a camp experience without packing up and leaving home. They offer all the same Girl Scout songs, games, and outdoor adventures as sleepaway camps. And with over a dozen of these volunteer-led camps spread throughout our 32 counties served, they’re easily accessible and budget-friendly.

For April Stephens and her daughters Hannah and Sydnee, day camp has been more than just a fun way to spend the summer – it’s a family tradition. April has been a dedicated Girl Scout mom and unit leader at Rainbow Ridge Day Camp for over fifteen years, and

she always wanted her girls by her side. “I have been going to Rainbow Ridge since I was a Brownie,” Hannah recalled. “And once I graduated high school, I returned as a unit leader.”

When you’ve been in Girl Scouts for as long as the Stephens family, you’re bound to have some pretty amazing stories. So, when we asked, they were more than happy to share their experience with us! April even arrived at headquarters with a shoebox overflowing with photos of their summer camp memories from over the years.

What makes Rainbow Ridge unique that keeps you coming back?

Hannah: The friends I met at camp have been a constant in my life for over a decade. We all care about each other, the campers, and the campsite, and it shows every year.

April: Seeing the campers grow up and being a part of their journey has been a real joy. It means so much to me when I hear that girls want to be in “April’s cabin!”

Sydnee: It’s just the best camp ever and feels like our home away from home during the day. We’re like one big family, and camp feels like a family reunion.

What would you tell other mothers considering volunteering with the Girl Scouts?

April: As my girls got older, keeping them engaged in Girl Scouts became more challenging. As a volunteer, I was able to shape some of their programming to meet their interests and career pursuits.

Why is a Day or Twilight Camp a great step towards sleepaway camp?

Hannah: They ease the transition to camping with tents and sleeping bags. Many girls also find it hard to say goodbye after a long day at camp, so parents can remind them that they’ll get to spend even more time with friends and unit leaders at sleepaway camp.

What are your favorite camp activities?

Hannah: Singing camp songs! There are so many Girl Scout songs to learn and I loved learning new ones while at camp. When I was a Brownie and Junior, I also really enjoyed swimming, archery, and crafts.

What are the biggest challenges you faced at camp?

Sydnee: Dealing with Daisy campers as a unit leader was a uniquely challenging experience that gave me a new sense of patience and perseverance.

What are some of the greatest lessons you learned at camp over the years?

Hannah: I learned to look out for others and proactively find ways to help instead of waiting to be asked to do something, whether volunteering to take pictures or set up activities.

What are your fondest memories from Rainbow Ridge?

Sydnee: My fondest memories of my aunt, who recently passed away, are the ones I have of our visits to Rainbow Ridge.

What would you tell parents who are hesitant to sign their girls up for camp?

Sydnee: Parents should know there is nothing to worry about. These girls are in the safest hands! I’ve been a Girl Scout forever and have been going to camp my entire life. All I want, and all everyone who works at the camp wants, is the best for all the campers.

Tejas Riders: A Horse Girl’s Dream Come True

Tejas Riders is our premier leadership equestrian program that not only provides its members access to ride, care for, and bond with our many horses; it also offers service to the equestrian program at Camp Bette Perot.

Current Tejas Rider Alyssa used to watch the group perform at the Mesquite Rodeo when she was a Daisy, and right away she knew she wanted to join when she was old enough!

Now a Cadette and part of the team, she shared with us her favorite things about the program: What she’s gained: It has helped me in knowing hard work, respect for my coaches and peers, and even more love for horses. Being able to lead badge work to all ages of Girl Scouts has helped me develop in how to teach different skills.

What she loves: Getting to know all the horses and their personalities, riding my horse, and spending weekends at the barn building friendships with our teams.

To future applicants: They should apply if they love horses. [Know that] it will be a lot of hard work, but in the end it’s a ton of fun and that Tejas is a family.

Interested in joining? Visit gsnetx.org/tejasriders to learn more. Applications for girls 12 and older by Sept. 2023 must be submitted by February 1.

Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas is pleased to engage corporate partners that make your Girl Scout’s experience more meaningful. Thank you to our partner spotlight organizations – the Dallas Mavericks and Amazon – for your commitment to building a girl-led future in our community! For more information on how to connect with us, please email funddev@gsnetx.org

In 2022, the Black History Month Patch Program, powered by the Dallas Mavericks engaged more than 1,000 Girl Scouts in learning about our history and the contributions of Black Women in a variety of fields. They even got to meet our very own trailblazer, Cynt Marshall!

I saw the girls’ face light up with the CEO of the Dallas Mavericks shared her story with them. [She] captured a photo and told them to always be a community champion and leader.

– Troop Volunteer

The Girl Scout Leadership Institute, presented by Amazon, showcases a variety of careers, helps Girl Scouts connect with professional mentors, and helps them apply badges and journeys that focus on leadership and empowerment. As one of 90 career exploration and job shadowing opportunities last year, girls visited Amazon’s FTW6 warehouse, where they got to experience the magic of our customer-obsessed partner and how they make sure North Texans receive their orders just in time.

Thank you to our corporate and organizational partners for supporting Girl Scouts of Northeast Texas!
