Fun Fest

Join Girl Scout Troops, families, and friends at the Durham Fairgrounds on Saturday, Ma y 16, 2015! At Fun Fest, you’ll do a little bit of eve rything. Learn about Girl Scout history, practice you r golf swing, relax with a picnic or ice cream, climb on the inflatable obstacle course, listen to music or sing along, try some hands-on STEM activities or a new style of dance, and more! While our overarching theme is It’s Your Story-Tell It!, you’ll find a wid e range of things to do. Watch for Fun Fest schedule updates and participat ing partners at gsofct.org. Dear Volunteers, Thank you! You are what makes Girl Scouting possible for so many girls throughout Connecticut. Thank you for donating your time, talents, and resources to the girls you serve in Girl Scouting. The girl experience in Girl Scouting allows girls to discover who they are and what they stand for, connect with many different people to create relationships, and learn how to take action to make the world a better place. As you know, Girl Scouting provides a safe place for girls to grow and develop – and your commitment makes that happen! Our signature event for the year is Fun Fest, which will be held on May 16, 2015. For those of you who may have experienced the fun of the Girl Scout 100th Jubilee in 2012, we are expecting thousands of girls and their families to join us at the Durham Fairgrounds for a spectacular allday event! There will be something for everyone. Sign up early to receive early bird pricing. Girls have a variety of pathways to participate, with many of them outlined within this Program Resource Guide. These include attending an event, like our Haunted Hike; attending a series, like our Astronomy Clubs; going on adventures with our travel troop; experiencing the outdoors with our summer camps; and of course, participating in troop activities. Girls and their families can decide together on what their Girl Scouting experience will be like this year – and remember, adults can volunteer in any of the pathways as well! Share this book with the girls and families in your troops so that they can explore everything Girl Scouts of Connecticut has to offer this year! Tips for Using This Book If you are interested in what activities are available during a particular month, jump to the Chronological Index on page 65. Scan through to see which activities are available to your specific grade level and go to the page listed for details. If you are looking for activities for a particular grade level, remember to check both the grade level section as well as the multi-level section. In these sections, activities are listed in alphabetical order. When you attend a grade-level specific event, all girls will be approximately the same age. Multi-level events are attended by a wider range of grade levels. For each activity there is a “register by” date. Remember to include this in your planning. Some events may fill before the “register by” date. You may register online, via fax, or mail. See How to Register on page 4. If you are looking for more information on resources particular to your grade level, you will find it at the beginning of the level section. Higher award information may be found on page 34 and 35. Scan the Table of Contents for other areas of interest such as Product Sales Program, Council’s Own patches and badges, Programs-in-a-Box, etc.

What Does This Mean?

At the end of every event, series, or trip description, you’ll see info in parentheses, such as (For: Troops, Families, Individuals, Individuals w/ Adult). We’ve added this to help identify who is welcome to attend these opportunities. Please remember that the majority of programming is intended for girls to learn and grow. Adults accompany solely for chaperoning and safety reasons. Register and bring only the appropriate grade level. Troop: A troop attends as a group of girls with chaperoning adults meeting ratio and safety activity checkpoints. When Troops attend this way, there are more spaces available for girls to participate. Family: This indicates that the event is geared for a wide range of ages – from Daisies to grandparents! Girls may attend with their immediate or extended family members. Often family friends are welcome to attend. All families must have responsible adults with them. Individuals: A girl may attend an event on her own, provided they bring a completed Health History Form. In general, these events are smaller and serve Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors. Individuals w/adult: A girl may attend with an adult chaperone.

How To Register

Plan well in advance with the girls to choose the events they’d like to attend. Registration All events require registration. Events may fill up quickly before the deadline. Early registration helps to assure your place and allows the Program Facilitator adequate time to prepare for the number of participants. Event size is limited by the facility, type of event, and number of facilitators. For these reasons, once the maximum has been met, additional participants cannot be added. Registration for most events and series in this book open on September 2. Some may open earlier.

Confirmation Upon completing registration through gsofct.org, you will receive a confirmation that your registration has been received. This does not confirm placement in the event. Registered participants will receive a confirmation via email or mail within two weeks following receipt of your registration and payment. If you have not received a confirmation, call or email the Registration Department at (203) 239-2922 ext. 500 or registration@gsofct.org. Sometimes mail goes astray and we may not have received your registration.

Registration Methods Registration forms can be found at gsofct.org in the Resource and Form Library. You can mail, email, or fax the completed registration form along with payment or register online using a credit card. You may also visit the North Haven Service Center and submit the registration form with payment. Payment must be made at the time of registration. No registrations will be taken over the phone.

Cancellations By Troop or Individual: Email the Registration Department at registration@gsofct.org as soon as possible, and at least one week prior to the initial registration deadline. Include your name, event title, and event number. If received in this manner, program fees (minus any non-refundable deposits mentioned) will be returned. If you do not notify in this manner, no refunds will be made. Refunds will be issued in the manner of initial payment.

Registering for an Event Online Step 1: Go to gsofct.org Step 2: On the “Participate” tab, select “Program and Training Registration Area” Step 3: Click “Log on” Step 4: Enter your login name and password. You should receive this information after you registered to be a member of GSUSA. If you don’t know your login, you can request this information by going to the main page of the “Program and Training Registration area” and selecting the appropriate prompt in the “Log On” area. Step 5: Click “View and Register” Step 6: Enter the beginning and ending dates in the “Event Between Dates” area. Under “Event name Contains,” type in the name of the event or the event number then click “filter.” The system will search based on the criteria you entered. Step 7: Once you find the event of choice, follow the prompts to complete the registration process. Payment Options Checks & Money Orders: Make checks payable to GSOFCT, and send payment in full to the Registration Department, North Haven Service Center, 20 Washington Avenue, North Haven, CT 06473. Please use one check per event registration form. Copies of checks will not be accepted. Credit Card Payments: If paying by credit card, you may fax or mail the registration form providing credit card information in the space allotted at the bottom of the form. Visa, MasterCard, and Discover are accepted. Include the full account number, expiration date, 3-digit code, name as it appears on the card, and authorization to charge the card.

By GSOFCT: We do our best to not cancel an event. But, sometimes we need to cancel due to conditions beyond our control. If extreme weather occurs, a facilitator is ill, or an event does not fill to the minimum number of participants, we may cancel. We will contact you at the email/phone associated with your event registration. In cases of inclement weather, cancellations will be posted on gsofct.org. In some cases you will be contacted with alternate date options. If you are unable to attend an alternate date, or if there is no alternate date, a refund will be issued. Refunds will be issued in the manner of initial payment. Tag-a-longs & Siblings Unless otherwise indicated in the event description and registration information, due to space and safety reasons, groups should not bring siblings or other non-Girl Scouts. Girls in grades K-12 are welcome to register as a member of Girl Scouts and attend events. Bring only those you registered for an event. Do not assume that “there will be room for one more person.” Girl Scout Safety & Ratios Prior to traveling as a troop, please visit gsofct.org and click on the “Volunteer” tab. Here you will find information on traveling as a troop as well as ratios. Girl-Adult ratios must be followed unless otherwise mentioned in the event description. Overall, these events are planned and geared for girls. Please do not bring additional adults as they may fill a space which could have been enjoyed by a girl. Financial Assistance Limited partial financial assistance may be available for council-sponsored events. The request for financial assistance is found in the Resource and Form Library on our website. Apply at least six weeks before the registration deadline.

Pathways of Participation When you become a member of Girl Scouts, you have a variety of ways to participate. These options or pathways include: Troop: The same group of girls come together and meet regularly for Girl Scout Program. Series: The same group of girls interested in a particular topic meet six to eight times. Event: Girls come together to attend a day or weekend event. While girls may attend several events, the same group of girls do not always attend each event. Camp: Girls participate in a day or resident camp with a focus on the outdoors and/or environmental education. Travel: Girls plan, prepare for, and participate in specific trips. Virtual: Girls participate in interactive, high quality programs in a safe, secure online environment. Nationally, the virtual pathway is under construction. Girls can choose to participate in one or more pathways. Each pathway is a real Girl Scout experience, providing the benefits of the Girl Scout Leadership Experience. In this Program Resource Guide, youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ll find information on council-sponsored events, trips, and series. Adult volunteers are critical to the success of these pathways. Locally, and at the council level, volunteers are needed in order to make these opportunities available to girls. Be a Program Volunteer There are many ways to support Girl Scout Programming. Some are ongoing commitments, while others are short term or one day commitments. Here are some examples: Gold Award Mentor, day-of event help, event planning, event preparation, campership committee, adventure facilitators, office help, graphic design, summer camp, etc. Contact program@gsofct.org to get started. Service to Girl Scouting Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors are welcome to complete service hours by assisting at events. Seniors and Ambassadors may also assist Program Services staff in the Service Centers. This may also help girls complete community service hours for school or their place of worship. National Program Portfolio The National Program Portfolio provides girls with a varied Girl Scout experience that encompasses leadership, skill building, and other activities to help girls gain confidence and character. It is comprised of Leadership Journeys, The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting, and badge sets created to compliment each journey series.

Leadership Journeys

Girl Scout Journeys are the foundation for leadership development at each program grade level in Girl Scouting. Just by following a Journey, girls will be engaging in the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and practicing some Girl Scout traditions! The sample sessions in the adult guides are intended not as a set number of meetings, but to provide momentum and a road map for a whole adventure that has more impact than any one activity in the journeys. Girls are encouraged to customize their journeys based on their interests and resources. There are three series of journeys, and in each series there is a journey book for each Girl Scout grade level. For each journey there is a set of five skill building badges that compliment the journey experience. The three series and the level journey titles include: It’s Your Story–Tell It! The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting is available for each program level. Combined with journeys and the skill building badge sets, this resource rounds out a girl’s experience, providing a multitude of opportunities to learn new skills and increase knowledge of Girl Scouts. This three-ring binder resource has three sections: • A Handbook section – full of traditions and Girl Scout history • A “My Girl Scouts” section – with a place to record what girls do as Girl Scouts • An Awards section- For Daisies this includes information on earning the Girl Scout Petals, and for every other level, information on their Legacy badges – topics that have always been, and still are, important to Girl Scouts. The seven Legacy badge topics include: Artist, Athlete, Citizen, Cook, First Aid, Naturalist, and The Girl Scout Way. The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting also offers: Financial Literacy badges (one per year), Cookie Business badges (one per year), Make My Own (one per year), Journey Summit Pin, and My Promise, My Faith. Additional awards such as VIT, Program Aide, Bronze, Silver, and Gold are included in appropriate grade level books. GSOFCT Signature Programs STEM

GSOFCT is dedicated to increasing girls’ involvement with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). By working with partners like the Society of Women Engineers, museums, local colleges, and major employers, girls are exposed to female role models as well as the latest in robotics, green technology, and engineering. This allows girls to envision themselves in future STEM careers. Knowing that girls want to help others and improve the world, we strive to connect them to real life STEM applications. We are proud to continue our robotics and pre-robotics programs in collaboration with FIRST Robotics. Junior FIRST LEGO League serves girls ages 6-9. FIRST LEGO League serves girls ages 9-14. Interested teams should contact Ellyn Savard at esavard@gsofct.org for information. GSOFCT STEM Career Week occurs in April. Professionals facilitate several STEM discovery events.

Live Healthy, Lead Healthy

For girls, being healthy is more than just eating right and exercising. It is also feeling good about oneself, being supported by friends and family, and appearing “normal.” Through Live Healthy, Lead Healthy activities, girls will learn that the choices they make today will impact their future health. GSOFCT offers a wide array of Live Healthy, Lead Healthy opportunities, all designed to help girls learn about positive choices they can make. Girls may participate in patch programs such as Live Healthy, Lead Healthy and The Fitness Challenge. With their troop, family member, or as an individual, they may participate in events or series opportunities. LHLH supportive kits are available for use by troops and Service Units. Girlz R.U.L.E.® (Respect, Understand, Lead, Empower)

Designed for girls in grades three through eight, this program helps girls learn the positive power of their words and how to show and share respect for each other. This interactive anti-bullying initiative is delivered by trained Girl Scout facilitators over an eight-week period. It can also be used as one module in an ongoing series of programs that deal with issues such as self-esteem, body image, and healthy behaviors. Leadership & Advocacy

To most girls, a leader is not just someone who has a certain set of skills and qualities; she is someone who pulls together a team, someone who sees the issue, and sets out to resolve it. She makes a difference in the world. The Girl Scout Program gives girls opportunities for leadership and encourages them to advocate for positive change. At GSOFCT, activities help girls hone leadership skills and introduce girls to females who are in leadership positions. Some of these include: Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Up to You!, Journey Weekends, Girl Scout Day at the Capitol, and Get Inspired!

Outdoor Skills

There is a growing divide between children and the natural world that surrounds them. The outdoors has always been a part of the Girl Scout Program. Experiencing the outdoors and learning new skills in real-life situations build meaningful teams and confidence in girls. Today, as always, Girl Scouts are able to learn outdoor skills as well as connect to the natural world. Look for opportunities such as Letterboxing Hikes, Camp Chef Series, and the Earth Day Event.

Adventure

Girls will learn by doing in a fun and exciting format of ground games and initiatives, low and high ropes, and climbing opportunities. The program is facilitated by trained staff so that the girls learn how to problem solve, communicate, and become better team members. Skills learned will improve their social interactions and ability to share ideas; encourage them to think outside the box; create an understanding of how they are important in a group; and show how to handle and resolve conflicts. Girls become more confident by participating in activities that are personally challenging, build self esteem, and enhance leadership skills, all while having fun with their fellow Girl Scouts! Cookies and QSP

The Girl Scout Cookie Program is not only an important, iconic part of the Girl Scout Experience, but it is also the largest girl-run business in the world! All Girl Scouts in Connecticut are invited to participate in both the Cookie Program and in the sale of nuts, candy, and magazines through the fall QSP Program. Participating in Product Sales programs introduces girls to important skills in goal setting, business ethics, decision making, money management, and people skills. Girls build upon these skills each year and can apply them in their future business and personal lives. A portion of the funds earned through the Cookie and QSP Programs helps fund troop treasuries so that girls have the resources to earn badges, explore new places, and provide service to their communities. Other funds are used by the council to provide trainings for adult volunteers, maintain camp properties, and provide additional programming for girls of all ages. Florence Griswold’s Remarkable HERstory

Born on Christmas Day in 1850, Miss Florence made history when she opened the family home to the artists of the Lyme Art Colony. Through her actions, this remarkable woman helped shape an important chapter in American Art History. It’s Your Planet – Love It! series: Breathe! Girls explore properties of air as well as measuring air quality and ways to improve it. It’s Your World – Change It! series: aMAZE Girls learn to navigate paths to peaceful relationships, both locally and globally. The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting This three-ring binder contains information on traditions, ceremonies, how to earn badges and other awards, such as L.I.A. and the Girl Scout Silver Award. Space is set aside for girls to record their thoughts and memories. GSOFCT Council’s Own patches may be found in this book or online at gsofct.org. All Journey and The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting books, as well as awards may be purchased at the GSOFCT shops or online at gsofct.org.

Leadership Journeys It’s Your Story – Tell It! series: For Seniors: MISSION Sisterhood! Seniors learn how widening their network broaden their world and benefits the world as well. For Ambassadors: Bliss: Live it, Give it! Ambassadors use their leadership skills to help others achieve their dreams too.

It’s Your Planet – Love It! series: For Seniors: Sow What? Girls investigate the food network and ways to take positive action to help others. For Ambassadors: Justice- Girls explore the idea of justice for earth and all its inhabitants. It’s Your World – Change It! series: For Seniors: GIRLtopia- Girls create their vision of an ideal world. For Ambassadors: Your Voice, Your World Girls learn tools to discover an issue they care deeply about and advocate for a possible solution. The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting This three-ring binder contains information on traditions, ceremonies, how to earn badges and other awards, such as Journey Summit. Space is set aside for girls to record their thoughts and memories. GSOFCT Council’s Own patches may be found in this book or online at gsofct.org. All Journey and The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting books, as well as awards may be purchased at the GSOFCT shops or online at gsofct.org. Event Etiquette • Share this book and GSOFCT website with the girls. At every grade level girls should be part of planning their Girl Scout Experience. • All registration questions should be directed to the Registration Department at 1 (800) 922-2770 ext. 500 or registration@gsofct.org. • If unsure what (For: Troop, Family, etc.) means in a description, see page 3, Tips for Using this Book. • Contact the program facilitator only with questions specific to the program such as attire or making arrangements for special needs. Be aware that some events may fill before the register by date. • Only bring those you registered for the event. • Be prepared! Check your confirmation for site address. Remember to allow time for walking from the parking lot to the event site. Please respect and help the program facilitator as needed. Discovery Challenger Mission

Discover the museum’s new state-of-the-art Challenger Learning Center. The year is 2076, when travelling to Mars is no longer a distant plan–it’s become a reality. A routine flight to the Red Planet has brought the latest human crew into Martian orbit to replace the team that has been stationed there for the past two years. Crew members must utilize teamwork, problem-solving, communication, and decision-making skills to build and launch a probe to one of the Martian moons, explore and analyze Martian rocks and soils, and track potentially hazardous conditions both on the spacecraft as well as on the surface of Mars. Explore, Design, Build, Teach - Overnight

Explore the different types of engineering, design your own solutions to problems, and build your prototype. Work with the Society of Women Engineers and Coast Guard Cadets to learn how engineers explore and solve problems using science and technology. Washington DC Trip Save the Date!

We will take a bus trip down to DC for the weekend, leaving early morning on Friday, May 20, 2016, and returning late afternoon on Sunday, May 22. Trip cost will be approximately $300 per person. $100 is due at registration, remainder due by April 6, 2016. Price will include transportation to and from DC, lunch on Friday and Sunday, pizza dinner on Friday, night tour of the city and monuments on Friday, and a trip to the National Zoo on Saturday morning. Girl Scout destinations are unique travel and learning opportunities for individual girls in grades 6-12. Whether here or abroad, girls will meet and team up with girls with similar interests. GSUSA usually posts the year’s new destinations in September on www.gsofct.org/forgirls. Applications must be received in the North Haven Service Center by November 7. Based on need, number of applicants, and availability of resources, partial financial assistance may be available. Girl Scouts Highest Awards Girl Scout Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors may earn one of the highest awards – Bronze, Silver, or Gold. Each award challenges a girl to put her leadership skills to work as she takes action to address a community issue. Information about these awards may also be found in The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting and at gsofct.org. These are national awards, but each council has their own way of doing things. It is important to know GSOFCT’s manner of implementation, deadlines, reporting, etc.

Girl Scout Bronze Award

The Girl Scout Bronze Award may be earned by a Girl Scout Junior, until the end of her last Junior Girl Scout membership year, September 30 of 6th grade. This Take Action project addresses an issue’s root cause and includes a suggested minimum of 20 personal hours of work. As a prerequisite, girls first complete a Junior Journey. Girls may earn the Bronze Award as a group and their project may be inside or outside of the Girl Scout community. Bronze Award pins as well as other special commemorative Bronze Award items may be found at GSOFCT council shops and online shop. When complete, girls should share their project information on the Participate tab of gsofct.org and ask her adult volunteer to register her for PG15998. The Girl Scout Silver Award

The Girl Scout Silver Award may be earned by a Girl Scout Cadette up until the end of her last Cadette Girl Scout membership year, September 30 of 9th grade. By earning this award, girls strengthen their leadership skills and abilities, learn about their community, and take action to make the world a better place! This Take Action project must address a root cause of a community issue and be done outside of the Girl Scout community. It may be done by one to four girls per project, with each girl contributing a recommended minimum of 50 hours. As a pre-requisite, girls must complete a Cadette Journey. Silver Award Webinars are available to help adults and girls learn more about the Silver Award Take Action process. Silver Award pins as well as other special commemorative Silver Award items may be found at GSOFCT council shops and online shop. When complete, girls should share their project information on the Participate tab of gsofct.org and ask her adult volunteer to register her for PG15999. This will officially record that she earned the award. Girl Scout Gold Award

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouting. Each Gold Take Action Project is led by one girl. The effort taken to earn this award expresses a special commitment to one’s self, community, world, and future. Each Gold Award project provides a sustainable solution that addresses a community issue. General information may be found in the Senior and Ambassador Girl’s Guides to Girl Scouting. Necessary GSOFCT specific information and forms may be found on the Participate tab of gsofct.org.

H I G H E S T

Prerequisites to earning the Gold Award include completing either two Senior/Ambassador Journeys, or having earned the Silver Award and completed one Journey. Girls must also attend a Gold Award Webinar before submitting their initial project plan. Adults are welcome to attend the webinar as well. All Gold Award projects are submitted for approval and girls are expected to work closely with their Volunteer Gold Award Mentor. All girls who have earned their Gold Award during the year (April 1-March 31) are honored at a council-wide reception, held on the first Sunday in June. During this ceremony, girls are presented with Gold Award certificates and a number of congratulatory letters and certificates from local and national dignitaries.

After completing the final Gold Award interview, girls who have earned the Gold Award may plan and participate in a local pinning ceremony. While girls receive their pin from their Gold Award Mentor, other special commemorative Gold Award items may be found at GSOFCT council shops and online shop. 2014 QSP Program Be Active and Dive into the QSP Program Exciting new changes to the program this year include Online Nut StoreEmails sent by girls to their friends and family will now include the link to the new online nut store. Customers will have the option to select from over 25 products, pay for their order online, and receive the nuts/candy directly from Ashdon Farms.

To Remember This - A brand new, easy way for family and friends to support Girl Scouts. The girl’s customers can now order photo keepsakes such as photobooks, holiday cards, personalized posters, calendars, and more. This option offers a great way to help people to preserve and share their memories with personalized photo keepsakes using their photos. Troops earn proceeds for every photo keepsake ordered – the same as they do for magazines sold.

Back for a second year – the Share Program! The Share Program was a huge success last year with over 3,880 cans of nuts donated to the American Red Cross, CT Chapter. Girls can help us to give even more cans this year by asking customers to support this great cause through the purchase of a can of nuts.

The QSP Program is GSOFCT’s fall product program that offers an opportunity for people to support Girl Scouts through the purchase of magazines, photo keepsakes, nuts, and candy. The 2014 QSP Program will run from on October 1 to November 1. Nuts and candy will be delivered in early December.

Election Day Booth Sales Troops can participate in booth sales this November during the week of Election Day. Spread the word and let your customers know that they can purchase their favorite cookies this fall! Trefoils, Tagalongs, Thin Mints, Savannah Smiles, Do-si-dos, and Samoas will all be available, and our new cookie, Rah-Rah Raisins, will be making its debut! Customers will love the oatmeal, raisins, and Greek yogurt-flavored pieces that make this cookie delicious and unique. Troop Leaders and girls may want to buy a box (or a few!) just for themselves! Not only will customers be happy, but troops and girls will also benefit from participating in booth sales. Girls continue to develop important skills in goal setting, money management, decision making, business ethics, and people skills while planning for, holding, and using proceeds from their booths. Troops will earn funds to be used for upcoming projects and events. Be sure to mark your troop calendar so that you do not miss out on this great opportunity! Election Day Booth Basics All registered troops and girls from Daisies through Ambassadors may hold an Election Day Booth Sale with appropriate adult supervision. Booth sales may be held from November 1 through 9, 2014. Booths can be set up at local polling places, businesses, schools, and events in your area. Troops who would like to hold a booth must reserve cookies by completing the Election Day Booth Sales Cookie Reservation form found on the homepage at gsofct.org no later than Friday, September 26, 2014. Troops may begin reserving cookies on August 8, 2014. The standard order of 20 cases will be given to troops on consignment for their booth sale. Only cookies picked up for this sale may be sold; troops may not sell cookies from the 2014 Cookie Program or past sales. Girls are encouraged to offer Cookies for Heroes or other Gift of Caring options to their customers. Cookies for Heroes boxes are paid for by customers and then donated by the council to active military members at home and overseas, to veterans, and to local heroes.

Election Day Booth Sales Booth Recognitions and Proceeds Girls can earn a special patch for holding a successful booth sale! To earn the patch, troops must pick up and return cookies at their scheduled time, offer Gift of Caring cookies to their customers, and provide their deposit confirmation to the council when cookies are returned. Troops who do not return cookies must submit their deposit confirmation before Wednesday, November 12, 2014. Cookies are sold for $4.00 per box and troops will receive $.75 for each box sold. Troops can earn an additional $20.00 bonus for selling 20 cases of cookies. Guidelines for a Successful Election Day Booth Sale! Speak with your Service Unit Manager or Service Unit Cookie Manager to learn about the procedure for scheduling and securing a booth site in your area. All booth site locations, days, and times must be approved by the Service Unit.

The Product Sales Team will contact troops in October to assign cookie pick-up dates and locations. Cookies will be picked up from a Council Service Center or a cookie cupboard in your community. Any unsold cookies must be returned on assigned day to a location given to you by your Product Sales Manager. Payment to Council must be made within 48 hours of your booth sale. Payments can be made online or at any Webster Bank. Deposit tickets will be available at cookie pick-up. To make an online payment, go to gsofct.org and click the Make A Payment link. Proof of payment for the amount due to Council must be presented when returning unsold cookies, or in the case of a sell out, provided to your Product Sales Manager no later than November 12, 2014. To be eligible to hold an Election Day Booth Sale, your troop must participate in the 2014 QSP Program and make a commitment to sell in the 2015 Cookie Program. Girl Scout History GSOFCT Museum

Located in room 107 on the first floor of the North Haven Service Center, the museum houses a collection of dolls in replica uniforms, local and international items, historical uniforms, accessories, and more. View the Golden Eaglet on the large screen TV, listen to Girl Scout songs, try on some historical uniforms, or take part in simple self-guided, hands-on activities. Troops have used the museum for ceremonies, special meetings, and when working on Girl Scout Ways badges. There is no fee to visit the museum. During the school year, it is open the first Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and the third Thursday from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Additional visits may be scheduled by contacting program@gsofct.org. We will do our best to meet your needs; those scheduled during regular GSOFCT business hours are met most easily.

Historical Suitcases

Bring history to your troop meeting or local event! The GSOFCT Historical Committee has created several suitcases with various uniforms, accessories, and handbooks. There is no fee to borrow these suitcases, but they must be picked up from and returned to the North Haven Service Center. Borrowers are held responsible for the contents. Reservations should be made as far in advance as possible and during times of high demand, may not be able to be met. There are two types of suitcases: General Suitcases with uniforms that may be carefully tried on for indoor meetings or fashion shows, and Parade Suitcases (very limited in quantity) with uniforms that may be worn during parades. Be a Part of Preserving and Sharing Girl Scout History! Historical Committee & Museum Volunteers: Interested in volunteering for the museum or the Historical Committee? We’re looking for friendly and responsible people to host museum open hours, creative souls to design hands-on rotating museum activities and displays, and detailed oriented people to assist with cataloging and preserving artifacts, preparing suitcases for loan, or making repairs to uniforms. Donating items: Donations of Girl Scout Historical items are welcome. While not all may be placed in the Museum, our charge is to preserve historical items related to Connecticut. Photos, uniforms, handbooks, and other Girl Scout memorabilia tell our story - especially when combined with a person’s name, location and if possible, oral history. Together it gives a snapshot of a place, person, or time. Service Unit Historian: Girls or adults may wish to record your Service Unit’s year. Create a snapshot in time with photos, troop rosters, list of activities, perhaps a few notes from various people about what they’d like to tell a future Girl Scout about their year. Program-in- a-Box What is a Program-in-a-Box?

They are rental boxes that contain activity ideas, tips, adult guide, and most of the supplies needed for fun exploration of specific topics. Boxes are rented for $15 for up to four weeks. They may be picked up in the North Haven office or mailed to you for an additional $15 shipping and handling. Timely return of these boxes is important and the responsibility of the renter.

How do I go about renting a box?

Using the Program Box Reservation form, submit your first and alternate choices for boxes, along with the fee, to the Program Department at the North Haven Service Center a minimum of two weeks in advance of the date it will leave the office. Boxes are available on a first-come, first-served basis. You will receive confirmation of your reservation or notification if the box is unavailable at the time of request.

What do the letter symbols after the box title indicate?

Letters inside parentheses indicate which Girl Scout grade level it is intended for. BD indicates the box has some of the activities and supplies in a particular badge. P indicates it supports a GSOFCT patch program. J indicates a Journey based box, which focuses on the initial “sample sessions” with ideas and resources to extend the experience.

Kids on the Block Kids on the Block are educational puppets that bring children an understanding of disability awareness, educational differences, and social concerns. The program promotes acceptance of differences in others. Girl Scout Cadettes, Seniors, and Ambassadors may take training to become Kids On The Block Puppeteers, presenting in their area. Girl Scout Troops and Service Units may request a trained troupe’s presentation. Requests will be honored based on availability of the puppeteers and puppets. Use the materials during your visit at camp, at no additional cost. Depending on how long and when you visit camp you may have a site usage fee. Q&A

How do I reserve it? First, using the site reservation form, reserve the building you’d like to visit. After you receive your site confirmation, email program@gsofct.org with the site, date, and your Girl Scout program level. We’ll send you the code to open the onsite lending library box. To ensure the libraries are kept in good condition, we’ll ask you to complete a simple pre- and post-use inventory. Visit the Participate tab for more information and to see session instructions and tips on what to bring when using the library. Is there a fee? Depending on when you reserve the site, there may be the usual site usage fee. You can use these and other program sites for free for three hours or less, Sunday afternoon until Thursday. Since this is an onsite lending library, there is no fee to use it, but all materials must be kept on site in good condition. Fees will be charged to replace missing or damaged materials.

My Promise, My Faith is a national Girl Scout faith based award. Information about this award may be found in The Girl’s Guide to Girl Scouting. P.R.A.Y. award programs encourage girls to become more active in their own religion, and develop spiritually by providing specific instruction. Awards are available for most ages and religions. Presidential Volunteer Service Award

The President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation recognizes the valuable contributions volunteers are making in our communities. Girl Scouts of Connecticut is an authorizing agency for these awards and our application can be found in the Resource and Form Library at gsofct.org. The number of volunteer hours required for the Bronze, Silver, and Gold level of this award varies according to age. Please see the application for more information. Award packets containing a pin and certificate are $10 each. In order to save on shipping and handling costs, GSOFCT places three orders per year: October 15, January 15, and April 15. Please be sure that all hours included on the application are actually volunteering to help others of your free will. Program Resources Pen Pals

While connecting with girls in other parts of Connecticut, increase girls’ literacy skills and help them learn more about our state! Submit a Pen Pal Request form, found in the Resource and Form Library at gsofct.org, and our Pen Pal volunteer will do her best to find a Connecticut match for you. One of the best things about having Connecticut pen pals is that girls have more opportunities to meet in person.

Letterboxing

Join in on the fun of letterboxing! This is a combination of scavenger hunt, map reading, and a hike. Follow clues to find a “planted” letterbox at one of our Outdoor Program Centers. Once you find the box, you can mark your logbook with the stamp found inside, stamp the logbook with your personal stamp, and return it to the box. Live Healthy, Lead Healthy boxes at Service Centers

Live Healthy, Lead Healthy is a GSOFCT initiative focusing on nutrition, fitness, and stress reduction. The program can be done as a series, using the curriculum found online or in the kit, or by completing some of these activities as a patch program. This program is geared for Daisies through Juniors. Through a grant, we are able to offer lending support kits at each Service Center. The kits have printed versions of the curriculum, extra copies of the Healthy Habits booklets, and some simple supplies. Contact hgranfield@gsofct.org to connect with the staff person responsible for the kit at your nearest Service Center.

Braille Books

A generous grant provided GSOFCT with Braille copies of all The Girl’s Guides to Girl Scouting, Badge sets, Journey adult guides, and Girl Journey books. We have lending sets available at each Service Center. For more information, contact program@gsofct.org.

Grief and Loss Program-in-a-Box

Helpful when there is a loss in a family or group, the Grief and Loss box contains ideas to help girls develop loss awareness through literature, art, and interactive activities. Books include story books for younger girls, teen appropriate books, and well as informational books for adults working with youth. Techbridge Kits

Techbridge Kits provide hands-on exploration of STEM (Science Technology, Engineering and Math) and related careers. Each box contains a guide and materials for the activities, and may be rented for a fee. Most kits are geared for Juniors and older. The five topic themes include: Power it Up, Design Time, Make it Green, Engineers to the Rescue, and Thrill Builders. To help facilitators become familiar with the activities and concepts, there are online instructional video clips. Gold Award Scholarships

Girls who have earned the Girl Scout Gold Award by April 1 of their high school senior year and are entering college as a freshman the following fall, or who have earned the Gold Award after April 1 before their college freshman year and are entering as a college sophomore may apply for the following $1,000 scholarships. The Bea Okwu and the Emily Chaison scholarship forms may be found in the Gold section of the Participate tab at gsofct. org. The Connecticut Elks also offer a scholarship. The application for this is usually posted in the same area by February 1. All applications are due on April 1. Girls are also encouraged to visit the GSUSA website for a national Gold Award scholarship search engine.

Gold Award Grants

Through the support of Deloitte, GSOFCT is able to offer a very limited number of $100 Gold Award mini grants for approved projects. Contact your Gold Award mentor for more information.

Troop and Service Unit Program Support

If you are planning a Service Unit event and looking for ideas or a resource contact, consider contacting the Program Department at program@gsofct.org. Let us know what type of event you are planning and the program person with expertise in that area will contact you. We’re happy to talk through ideas to help you in your planning. Also, in the Resource and Form Library, you’ll find the Heart Sisters event plan. This includes activity station ideas, supply lists, table tents, and invitations for a healthy living focused event. This is a great girl, girl and special someone, or recruitment event, that supports the Live Healthy, Lead Healthy patch program.

GSOFCT Chorus

The GSOFCT Girls Chorus for Cadettes and older gets together during the year for practice to learn new songs for social events and for performances. While some activities are optional, prior to a performance, there usually is a required session. This year they will be performing at the Fun Fest in Durham, CT on May 16, 2015.
