The smell of pine and campfire smoke enters your nose…

and pitching a tent and make lifelong friendships and memories.

Green grass tickles your back as you roll down a hill…

If you’ve completed grades K-12, Camp Molly Lauman has a camp program for you. If you’re not a registered Girl Scout, all you have to do is pay a $30 membership fee — which allows you to participate in other activities offered by the Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland Council through September 2018! We offer programs for all interests—from horseback riding and high adventure, to culinary camps and spa experiences. We even have camps based on your favorite books and movies.

You can hear girls laugh, discovering frogs by the creek… Hiking in the woods with the group, you spot a doe and her fawns… And of course, you can almost taste the melted chocolate on your fingers after making the perfect s’more. At camp, you’ll get in touch with all your senses AND your Girl Scout friends! Since 1929, Girl Scout summer camp has given girls a chance to explore their inner G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™. At camp, every girl can try new things—from learning archery to exploring life in the creek. Girls practice outdoor skills like building a campfire

. d l u o c i f i r a ye l l a i would stay So many things make camp special. But what’s our favorite part? The outdoors! Camp is a great way to soak up nature’s scenery while making new friends. Our campers live in a group with other girls who have signed up for the same program. Each unit has sleeping quarters for 16-24 girls, pit latrines, a hand washing station, and a picnic shelter. Two central shower houses are available for all girls to use. In case of severe weather, indoor shelter is available.

We have four types of sleeping shelters:

Please check specific program descriptions to see where each group is scheduled to stay.

Platform tents are where

Cabins have lights, screened

most girls sleep. They are heavy canvas structures with wooden floors and four beds. Open flaps allow for light and ventilation.

windows, and four beds. They have electricity, so you may want to bring a small plug-in fan to help keep cool.

8

Our staff members go through a rigorous screening, selection, and training process. Many staff members are aspiring teachers, outdoor educators, and former campers. They come from all over Ohio, the United States, and the world to work here! With the exception of campers who sleep in the lodge, staff members do not stay in the same sleeping quarters as campers. Counselors stay in quarters near the center of the unit, where they can monitor everyone easily. At night, camp counselors will check to make sure everyone is settling in and feeling comfortable in their outdoor surroundings. Often, they’ll read stories or sing each tent to sleep. Your counselors are always within earshot if you need them during the night.

Yurts are a cool cross between tents and cabins. They have ceiling fans, lights, screened windows, and four sets of bunk beds.

Our lodge is a large open room. Girls sleep on folding cots and have access to indoor bathrooms. This is the only sleeping arrangement where counselors sleep in the same room with the campers.

9

Meals at camp are kid-friendly and healthy. We prepare many dishes from scratch, which allows us to accommodate most common allergies and dietary restrictions. Most meals are served family style in the camp dining hall. Campers also enjoy campfire cookouts, where they’ll get to help plan and prepare the meals. Typical meals include tacos, sandwich wraps, sloppy joes, and cheese quesadillas with tomato soup. If you’re a picky eater, we’ve got you covered! There’s always a salad bar and sandwich station available. 10

Bring a Friend!

Lone Wolf?

You can request one buddy* to bunk with you during your time at camp. To be bunk buddies, you both must be registered for the same program and both must request each other by name, not troop number. Why just one buddy? Most campers stay in four-person tents or cabins. We do not allow groups of three to request each other because that leaves one girl in the tent/cabin who may feel left out. After all, part of the fun at camp is making new friends, and that’s hard to do when you’re only hanging out with girls you already know.

More than half of the girls who come to camp come on their own. So, if you come without a buddy, don’t worry. You’ll be living with a group of girls who have signed up for the same program as you, so you’ll already have something in common! Camp counselors are great with helping everyone get to know each other through fun games and icebreaker activities. You’ll definitely want to bring a notebook and pen along with your camp gear to get contact info from your new buddies at the end of the week.

If you have more than one friend coming to camp with you, you’ll have plenty of time to hang out with them during most of the daytime activities, like swimming, meals, and game time. *Requests for multiple buddies will not be honored.

Big adventures can bring up some pretty big questions. Here are answers to the most common questions we receive. What’s included in the cost? The cost includes all meals, lodging, equipment rental fees, trained guides, and transportation necessary for the trip. You’ll only need money for snacks and souvenirs along the way.

How long will I be away from camp? Most Adventure Trekkers spend one or two nights at Camp Molly Lauman before leaving on their adventure. You’ll return on Thursday of the following week — right on time for closing campfire with the rest of camp.

What special gear will I need to bring? We provide all the group camping gear, cooking equipment, and specialized activity gear, such as backpacking packs, bicycles, and rock climbing equipment for each planned activity. All you need to bring is your personal gear — clothes, sleeping bag, pillow, personal overnight items, water bottles, and mess kits. We’ll send you a specialized packing list for your trip, but here are a few items to start thinking about now:

I have a grown-up that wants to come. Can they? Like resident camp, Adventure Treks are just for girls.

Sleeping Bags: The smaller the better. We pack gear for 12 people in each van. Smaller sleeping bags can help save space for things like coolers of food.

What kind of physical shape should I be in to go on a trip? If you can run a mile without stopping (no time limit), then you’re in good shape for an Adventure Trek.

What happens if I get sick or injured on the trip? If you get sick or injured, getting you better will be our top priority so you can safely get back to the fun. If you are unable to continue, we will contact your parent or caregiver to arrange a pickup.

Footwear: Sneakers are recommended for biking, caving, and rock climbing. For backpacking and Boundary Waters canoeing, you will need sturdy, broken-in boots. For other watersports, you will need a secure, closed-toe amphibious shoe. Clothes: Quick-dry clothes are best for all activities. Cotton should be avoided because it stays wet and uncomfortable for a long time.

REGISTRATION FAQ

, My camper s program is full; what should I do? If you call us, we can add you to a waitlist. Unfortunately, very few waitlisted campers make it onto the roster, so please consider signing up for a second choice if your first choice is full. Is financial assistance available? Yes! Financial assistance and camperships are available for all programs in this guide, except Family Camp. Is there a confirmation packet or packing list? Everything you need to know is included in the "Summer Camp Success Guide." This guide can be found at gsoh.org under Forms at the top right of the homepage. You'll find packing lists, forms that you will need to fill out, check-in and checkout times, and more valuable information about camp.

Can campers stay with a sister or friend? Yes! If girls are registering for the same program, they can request one other girl as a buddy. Requests for more than one buddy will not be honored. Please request a buddy by name, not troop number. My camper has special needs. Will she be successful at camp? Many girls find that camp is a place where they are not judged for their differences, but embraced for their unique skills and traits. Girls need to have a certain level of independence to come to camp though. Our staff members do not have training to handle some cases, nor can we arrange for every accommodation. Check out the quizzes on pages 12-13 and see what the results say. If you have any questions, please contact Erin Feinour efeinour@gsoh.org.

When is final payment due? Payment for standard resident camps is due by June 1. Adventure Trek payments are due by May 1. A late fee of $20 will be added to any payments not received by June 1 (May 1 for Adventure Treks). Can I register after June 1? Yes! If there is space in a program, you can register up until the week before a camp begins. A late registration fee of $20 is applied to all resident camp registrations received after June 1. Cancellation Policy Resident camp cancellations made before June 1 (May 1 for Adventure Treks) will receive a full refund, less the required non-refundable deposit. Cancellations after June 1 (May 1 for Adventure Treks) must include a doctor’s note or other suitable documentation. Acceptable situations include: camper illness, family emergency, change in parent/caregiver’s job status or job transfer, etc. If eligible for a refund, (less the required non-refundable deposit), a written request with suitable documentation must be submitted to Council Headquarters within two weeks of the start of your chosen program. Refunds are processed within three weeks. No refunds will be given after August 31, 2018. If a camp session is cancelled by Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland due to low enrollment or other reasons, campers will be given a chance to transfer to a suitable open session or receive a full refund of amount paid, including the deposit.

Are you tired of life in the muggle world? Experience an enchanting adventure at one of the many Outdoor Schools of Wizardry coming to GSOH this summer. Learn new skills as you read cookie crumbs, search for magical creatures, and mix potions along with your favorite traditional camp activities.

Share your wizarding talents with younger girls as you strengthen your outdoor skills and develop your own leadership styles. Build teamwork, learn practical problem solving, and enhance your song repertoire. Then pass on what you know to younger campers — they'll be spellbound by all you've learned!

Adults Spend a week of your summer making magic happen for campers by guiding them through the great outdoors. Training is provided and you’ll get one free camp session for a Girl Scout relative. Number of campers is directly tied to the number of adult volunteers, so your participation gives more girls a chance to experience camp’s charm.
