CAMP CAMARADERIE WITH GIRL SCOUTS The smell of pine and campfire smoke enters your nose…

and pitching a tent while making lifelong friendships and memories.

Green grass tickles your back as you roll down a hill…

If you’ve completed grades K-12, Camp Molly Lauman has a program for you. If you’re not a registered Girl Scout, all you have to do is pay a $30 membership fee — which allows you to participate in other activities offered by the Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland Council through September 2019! We offer programs for all interests—from horseback riding and high adventure, to culinary camps and spa experiences. We even have camps based on your favorite books and movies.

You can hear girls laugh discovering frogs by the creek… Hiking in the woods with the group, you spot a doe and her fawns… And of course, you can almost taste the melted chocolate on your fingers after making the perfect s’more. At camp, you’ll get in touch with all your senses AND your Girl Scout friends! Since 1929, Girl Scout summer camp has given girls a chance to explore their inner G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader)™. At camp, every girl can try new things — from learning archery to exploring life in the creek. Girls practice outdoor skills like building a campfire

Even sleeping at camp is a fantastical adventure! Our campers live in a group with other girls who have signed up for the same program. Each unit has sleeping quarters for 16-24 girls, pit latrines, a hand washing station, and a picnic shelter. Two central shower houses are available for all girls to use. In case of severe weather, indoor shelter is available.

. ld u o c i if r a e y ll a i would stay We have four types of sleeping shelters:

Platform tents are where

Cabins have lights, screened

most girls sleep. They are heavy canvas structures with wooden floors and four beds. Open flaps allow for light and ventilation.

windows, and four beds. They have electricity, so you may want to bring a small plug in fan to help keep cool.

8

CAMP STAFF Our staff members go through a rigorous screening, selection, and training process. Many staff members are aspiring teachers, outdoor educators, and former campers. They come from all over Ohio, the United States, and the world to work here! With the exception of campers who sleep in the lodge, staff members do not stay in the same sleeping quarters as campers. Counselors stay in quarters near the center of the unit, where they can easily monitor everyone. At night, camp counselors will check to make sure everyone is settling in and feeling comfortable in their outdoor surroundings. Often, they’ll read stories or sing each tent to sleep. Your counselors are always within earshot if you need them during the night.

Yurts are a cool cross between tents and cabins. They have ceiling fans, lights, screened windows, and four sets of bunk beds.

Our lodge is a large open room. Girls sleep on folding cots and have access to indoor bathrooms. This is the only sleeping arrangement where counselors sleep in the same room with the campers.

9

WHAT'S COOKING? Meals at camp are kid-friendly and healthy. We prepare many dishes from scratch, which allows us to accommodate most common allergies and dietary restrictions. Most meals are served family style in the camp dining hall. Campers also enjoy campfire cookouts, where they’ll get to help plan and prepare the meals. Typical meals include tacos, spaghetti, chicken nuggets, and cheese quesadillas with tomato soup. If you’re a picky eater, we’ve got you covered! There’s always a salad bar and sandwich station available.

10

Bring a Friend!

Lone Wolf?

You can request one buddy* to bunk with you during your time at camp. To be bunk buddies, you both must be registered for the same program and both must request each other by name, not troop number. Why just one buddy? Most campers stay in four-person tents or cabins. We do not allow groups of three to request each other because that leaves one girl in the tent/cabin who may feel left out. After all, part of the fun at camp is making new friends, and that’s hard to do when you’re only hanging out with girls you already know.

More than half of the girls who come to camp come on their own. So, if you come without a buddy, don’t worry. You’ll be living with a group of girls who have signed up for the same program as you, so you’ll already have something in common!

If you have more than one friend coming to camp with you, you’ll have plenty of time to hang out with them during most of the daytime activities, like swimming, meals, and game time.

Camp counselors are great with helping everyone get to know each other through fun games and icebreaker activities. You’ll definitely want to bring a notebook and pen along with your camp gear, because you’ll want to get contact info from your new buddies at the end of the week.

camp nds e i r f forever! (CFF)

*Requests for multiple buddies will not be honored.

11

GET CAMP-READY! At resident camp, girls can be themselves. In this safe environment, girls practice independence and interact with peers who share similar interest. Going to camp for the first time (or second, or third) can be a little scary, but there are lots of ways to be prepared!

Check out Chip’s Tips:

Become confident with washing, combing, and pulling your hair back on your own, especially after swimming or showering!

Learn how to identify daddy longlegs, which are completely harmless. Practice what to do if you find one in your tent - stay relaxed and gently sweep the little guy outside.

Step out into a natural environment at night time. Listen to the sounds to prepare for sleeping in the woods.

Learn how important it is to stay hydrated! Make a water bottle a constant part of your day, and set goals for how much water to drink, especially while being active outdoors.

Practice applying bug repellent and sun screen and remember – always spray away from the tents!

Familiarize yourself with what a tick looks like and how to properly check for them. Practice what to do if you find a tick on yourself (tell an adult).

Try new foods at home, and even come up with some cool recipes that you could make over a fire!

Practice packing your bag! Make sure you know how to roll your sleeping bag just like you’ll do at the end of camp. Try your best to come to camp with just one bag!

Practice singing a camp song.

Have progressively longer sleepovers. Start with one night at a friend or family member’s home, and gradually build up to at least 3!

12

TIERED PRICING what is it? We believe that every girl, regardless of financial circumstances, should have the opportunity to experience camp. While the cost to maintain camp continues to rise, we understand that families have differing abilities to meet summer camp costs. For this reason, we’ve adopted tiered pricing.

Tier One closely reflects the full cost of camp, including staff expenses, property maintenance, food, and program supplies.

Tier Two is a partially subsidized cost of camp, for families that can pay a little more, but not the full cost of camp.

Tier Three is heavily subsidized through participation in product programs, special events, donations, and grants.

Choose the tier that works best for you and your family. Fee choice is on the honor system and no financial documentation is required. All campers will have the same experience regardless of the tier chosen, and camp staff will have no knowledge of the tiers their campers’ families have chosen.

ADVENTURE TREK FAQ Big adventures can bring up some pretty big questions. Here are answers to the most common questions we receive. What’s included in the cost? The cost includes all meals, lodging, equipment rental fees, trained guides, and transportation necessary for the trip. You’ll only need money for snacks and souvenirs along the way.

How long will I be away from camp? Most Adventure Trekkers spend one or two nights at Camp Molly Lauman before leaving on their adventure. You’ll return on Thursday of the following week – right on time for closing campfire with the rest of camp.

What special gear will I need to bring? We provide all the group camping gear, cooking equipment, and specialized activity gear, such as backpacking packs, bicycles, and rock climbing equipment for each planned activity. All you need to bring is your personal gear – clothes, sleeping bag, pillow, personal overnight items, water bottles, and mess kits. We’ll send you a specialized packing list for your trip, but here are a few items to start thinking about now:

What happens if I get sick or injured on the trip? If you get sick or injured, getting you better will be our top priority so you can safely get back to the fun. If you are unable to continue, we will contact your parent or caregiver to arrange a pickup.

Sleeping Bags: The smaller the better. We pack gear for 12 people in each van. Smaller sleeping bags can help save space for things like coolers of food. Footwear: Sneakers are recommended for biking, caving, and rock climbing. For backpacking and Boundary Waters canoeing, you will need sturdy, broken-in hiking boots. For other watersports, you will need a secure, closed-toe amphibious shoe. Clothes: Quick-dry clothes are best for all activities. Cotton should be avoided because it stays wet and uncomfortable for a long time. What kind of physical shape should I be in to go on a trip? If you can run a mile without stopping (no time limit), then you’re in good shape for an Adventure Trek.

What is the registration lottery? Due to the high interest in these programs, a lottery system is used to select participants. After November 1, 2019, visit gsoh.org/adventuretreks to submit your lottery registration information. To be considered, entries must be filled out completely and submitted by the deadline provided. Selected participants will be contacted by phone and email on the next business day after the deadline and must register and pay a non-refundable $100 deposit to hold their spot. If deposits are not made on time and more entries are available, a second round of lottery winners will be contacted and given a timeframe to pay their deposit. If spaces are still available after the second deadline, registration will move to a first come, first served basis when resident camp registration opens for all campers. Girls can enter the lottery for as many Adventure Treks as they are interested in but will be selected for no more than one per summer.

FAQ My camper’s program is full; what should I do? If you call us, we can add you to a waitlist. Unfortunately, very few waitlisted campers make it onto the roster, so please consider signing up for a second choice if your first choice is full.

Is financial assistance available? Yes! Financial assistance and camperships are available for all programs in this guide, except Family Camp. Apply at gsoh.org/camp.

Is there a confirmation packet or packing list? Everything you need to know is included in the “Summer Camp Success Guide.” This guide can be found at gsoh.org/camp. You’ll find packing lists, forms that you will need to fill out, check-in and check-out times, and more valuable information about camp.

Can campers stay with a sister or friend? Yes! If girls are registering for the same program, they can request one other girl as a buddy. Requests for more than one buddy will not be honored. Please request a buddy by name, not troop number.

My camper has special needs. Will she be successful at camp? Many girls find that camp is a place where they are not judged for their differences, but embraced for their unique skills and traits. Girls need to have a certain level of independence to come to camp. Our staff members do not have training to handle some cases, nor can we arrange for every accommodation. If you have any questions, please contact Customer Care.

When is final payment due? Payment for standard resident camps is due by June 1. Adventure Trek payments are due by May 1. A late fee of $20 will be added to any payments not received by June 1 (May 1 for Adventure Treks).

Can I register after June 1? Yes! If there is space in a program, you can register up until the week before a camp begins. A late registration fee of $20 is applied to all resident camp registrations received after June 1.

Cancellation Policy Resident camp cancellations made before June 1 (May 1 for Adventure Treks) will receive a full refund, less the required non-refundable deposit. Cancellations after June 1 (May 1 for Adventure Treks) must include a doctor’s note or other suitable documentation. Acceptable situations include: camper illness, family emergency, change in parent/ caregiver’s job status or job transfer, etc. If eligible for a refund, (less the required nonrefundable deposit), a written request with suitable documentation must be submitted to Council Headquarters within two weeks of the start of your chosen program. Refunds are processed within three weeks. No refunds will be given after August 31, 2019. If a camp session is cancelled by Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland due to low enrollment or other reasons, campers will be given a chance to transfer to a suitable open session or receive a full refund of amount paid, including the deposit.

DAY CAMP 2019 Adventures await at day camps across the council. A day camp experience can be the highlight of your summer as you explore the outdoors through new experiences and old camp favorites. At each camp, you will build your day camp experience as you discover the places you can go! You might navigate through the world of travel, venture into career opportunities, delve into science and inventions, or leave no stone unturned as you enhance your outdoor skills. Grades K-5 Get your feet into shoes, grab your backpack, and join others to get a glimpse of the places you can go in your life.

Grades 6-12 Reveal your talents and strengths as you share them with younger girls. Build on your own skills to enhance your opportunities and make the road to your future an ever-winding path.

Look for the day camp guide to arrive at your house in late February.

Adults Spend a week of your summer helping girls explore the places they can go as you guide them in the outdoors. Training is provided, and you’ll get one free camp session for a Girl Scout relative. All camps are volunteer run so the number of campers is directly related to the number of adult volunteers. Volunteer to give more girls a chance to have a positive outdoor experience.
