Think Globally, Act Locally! In 2015, leaders around the world agreed to work together to accomplish 17 goals by 2030—these are referred to as the Global Goals for Sustainable Development, or SDGs for short. They focus on things like taking care of the environment, making sure all people have enough to eat, and improving people’s health. They’re big goals, but Girl Scouts®know a thing or two about changing the world! The Girl Scout Global Action award calls for girls to address the Global Goals by discovering, connecting and taking action in their communities and the world. In 2020, girls will explore SDG 5 (Gender Equality) to earn their Global Action award. The Global Action award is an official national award, so Girl Scouts can wear it on their vest or sash, just like a badge. To learn more about the Global Action Award visit:

Spring/Summer 2020

World Thinking Day Award On Feb. 22, Girl Scouts and Girl Guides across 150 countries celebrate World Thinking Day—that’s one big celebration! Even though World Thinking Day is Feb. 22, the World Thinking Day Award can be earned any day throughout the year. Promoted by the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS for short) along with Girl Scouts of the USA, World Thinking Day originated in 1926. That’s when delegates from around the globe met at Camp Edith Macy—now called Edith Macy Conference Center—in New York

State and agreed that Feb. 22 would henceforth be known as a special day for Girl Guides and Girl Scouts worldwide. Backed by 10 million Girl Guides and Girl Scouts in locations worldwide, World Thinking Day 2020 celebrates the diversity, equity, and inclusion reflected in our global movement. Check out our activity guides to explore this theme—and celebrate being part of the diverse global sisterhood that is Girl Guides and Girl Scouts! Find out more at:

Highest Awards

Girls Changing the World

Bronze. Silver. Gold. These represent the highest honors a Girl Scout can earn. All three awards give you the chance to do big things while working on an issue that has captured your interest in a big way. As a Girl Scout, you are in an exceptional position to take action and make the world a better place. By earning the Girl Scout Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards, you will be joining the ranks of generations of young women who have made a difference both locally and globally. Service vs. Action: What’s the Difference? Girl Scouts often do community service and take action within their projects. Both kinds of projects help communities in different ways. What’s the difference? Direct and immediate service changes something right now. Longer-lasting action gets at the root cause of issues. Community service makes the world better for some people right now. For example, collecting cans of food for the local food pantry feeds people right now. Gathering toys for a homeless-family shelter makes kids happy right now. Providing clothing and toiletries to people who have suffered a disaster helps them get through a traumatic event right now. These acts of kindness are important ways to help some people right now. Take Action projects, such as the ones you complete for the Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards, come up with sustainable, longer-lasting solutions. These projects strive to make the world a better place for more people for a much longer time. Sometimes, service and action just naturally blend together into one sustainable effort. As a Girl Scout, you use both service and action to live out the Girl Scout Law and “make the world a better place!”
