Mythical Creatures

About Day Camp

Mythical creatures have been found in books, movies, and on television for decades. In 2023, they will be coming to Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland day camps. Bring your imagination and your sense of adventure as you explore the world of unicorns, gnomes, leprechauns, fairies, mermaids, and more. Each day camp experience includes a variety of activities such as cookouts, singing, hiking, crafts, STEM skills, outdoor skills, slingshot/archery, and more.

Day camp is an exciting introduction to the outdoors – our aim is for girls to have a positive camp experience as they become more comfortable outdoors and in their own abilities. We will adhere

to the safety guidelines established by federal, state, and local governments; Girl Scouts of the U.S.A.; the American Camp Association; and GSOH.

Our programs are full of sun, fun, and adventure. You may choose to attend one camp or pick one for every week of the summer. Although times may vary, a typical day camp is a five-day session held Monday–Friday between 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m. Girls register for day camp as individuals. They may request one buddy (requests must be reciprocated) of the same age level. Girls from the same troop are not guaranteed to be in the same unit.

Refunds and Cancellations

If you are requesting a refund for your cancellation, the request must be made in writing and sent to Council Headquarters no later than 20 business days prior to the start of your registered camp. Your request must state the reason for the cancellation. If you are canceling and are not requesting a refund, call Council Headquarters at 1-800-621-7042. Cancellations due to sudden illness or a family emergency must be submitted to Council Headquarters within two weeks after the first day of your registered camp. For any cancellation, 20 percent of the day camp fee paid will be retained for handling charges.

Tiered Pricing

We believe every girl, regardless of financial circumstances, should have the opportunity to experience camp. For this reason, we use tiered pricing. Choose the tier that works best for you and your family. Fee choice is on the honor system and no financial documentation is required. All campers will have the same experience regardless of the tier chosen, and camp staff will have no knowledge of which tier their campers have selected. Visit www.gsoh.org/camp for information on financial assistance.

Teen Leadership Opportunities

Want your teen to share her camp enthusiasm with younger girls as she strengthens her outdoor skills and develops her own leadership style? She can be a part of a team, learn practical problem solving, and earn leadership awards by taking on a leadership role at camp!

Check out the opportunities below with your teen to discover which program is best for her! She may choose to participate in any leadership program for which she meets the requirements. For a full list of requirements for each position, as well as instructions on how to register, visit gsoh.org/daycamp.

Leaders in Action (LiA)

Have fun building teamwork and leadership skills with your group and earn one of the LiA awards. Previous day camp experience not required.

Program Aide 1 (PA1)

Grade completed 7–12

Share your love of camp with younger Girl Scouts! PA training teaches you skills to be a confident and effective leader.

Prerequisite: LiA Award (earned in troop, camp, or individually) or completed ninth grade.

Program Aide 2 (PA2)

Note: All teen mentors must be currently registered Girl Scouts. Most day camps require attendance at some additional trainings prior to camp for all program aide levels.

Take your leadership skills to the next level as a PA2! Earn service hours toward recognitions and assist day camp adult volunteers to help create a positive camp experience for girls.

Prerequisite: Day Camp PA1.

Advanced Program Leader (APL)

Volunteer Opportunities

Spend a part of your summer guiding campers through the great outdoors. Encourage curiosity, inspire adventurers, and be a role model for girls by volunteering at day camp! We rely on dedicated volunteers to help us deliver seven successful, fun-filled weeks of day camp each summer. The number of girls accepted for camp depends on the number of adult volunteers. Grab your friends and sign up to give girls a week full of outdoor adventure.

Volunteers are Awesome!

There are great benefits to being a day camp volunteer:

• Experience the satisfaction of helping girls learn and have fun outdoors.

• Spend a week making lifelong friends and memories.

• Guarantee placement in the day camp of your choice.

• Receive a credit up to $90 for one girl relative who is a currently registered Girl Scout to attend a GSOH day camp.

• Most camps provide separate programs for the preschoolers and boys (grades K–5) of volunteers for a minimal cost.

How to Become a Day Camp Volunteer

Review “What Does It Mean to be a Day Camp Volunteer?” and complete the Day Camp Volunteer Request Form at gsoh.org/daycamp. Note, all volunteers must be a registered Girl Scout member. For instructions on how to register, see the section below.

Please try to sign up by Friday, March 17, 2023. This lets us know how many girls we can accommodate when planning for each camp. If you miss the early deadline, we will certainly still accept your assistance as needed.
