Celebrating 100 Years of Changing the World This year, the Gold Award turns 100! Although it’s gone by different names—Golden Eagle of Merit, Golden Eaglet, Curved Bar, and First Class—it remains the highest award a Girl Scout can earn. Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland celebrated this year’s Gold Awardees on April 10 with a special ceremony at the Grange Audubon Center. An impressive group of 26 girls from across council’s 30 counties were awarded their Gold Awards for projects focusing on areas ranging from the improvement of animal welfare to enhancing the lives of people in their communities. We would like to extend a special thank you to Kathleen and Michael Schoen for sponsoring this year’s celebration and to our alumnae group, Trefoil 1, for providing these incredible young ladies with their Gold Award pins.

Memories Await at Winniker Lodge Have you heard the news? We have a new troop house at Camp Crooked Lane in Mt. Gilead, Ohio.

Winniker Lodge opened its doors with a formal dedication and ribbon-cutting ceremony on March 4, 2016.

This stunning new building allows Camp Crooked Lane to serve more girls and has a sleeping capacity of 22. Winniker Lodge boasts a beautiful fireplace and spacious outdoor deck with a breath-taking view of the property’s large pond. No matter where the sun is rising or setting, spectacular views are all around the pond.

We wish to extend a special thanks to Girl Scout alumna, Casey Kerr for her generous support of this wonderful project named for her mother, Winnie Kerr. Winniker Lodge is truly a place where girls and volunteers will be able to create lasting memories.

The council would like to continue enhancing Camp Crooked Lane. An overlook deck, large gathering tables, and a new fire circle with seating and a stone wall are some of the proposed upgrades.

Once a Girl Scout, Always a Girl Scout I made some of my best friends as a youngster in Girl Scouts.

Our leaders made a huge impact on our confidence and futures.

The adventures and guidance I experienced as a girl made me want ALL girls, including my three daughters, to benefit from Girl Scouting—this can’t happen without dedicated adult volunteers.

As alumnae, we all have fond Girl Scout memories and so much to contribute to girls today. While my three daughters are now in college, I know there are many girls that still need my support. All alumnae can make an impact, right now!

Did you know, no matter how long you were an active Girl Scout—one year or ten—you are a Girl Scout alumna. The Alumnae Advisory Committee at Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland is working hard to get that message out and reconnect with alumnae in our area. As a committee, we work directly with council to recruit and engage alumnae by keeping you informed, providing volunteer opportunities, and alumnae specific programs. We know the life changing impact Girl Scouts has on girls and adults and we want to continue that positive impact for our alumnae for years to come. Over the past century, Girl Scouts has grown to include more than 59 million alumnae— united across distance by lifelong friends, shared adventures, and the desire to do big things to make the world a better place.

We would love to have you stay connected through volunteering or alumnae activities, even when you or your daughter graduates from high school. If you know a Girl Scout alumna, encourage her to reconnect with other Girl Scout alumnae through the Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland Council and continue her life changing experience by registering for free with the Alumnae Association at gsoh.org/alumnae.

Beyond the First Tap January 30, 2016 was a beautiful day for tree tapping at Camp Ken-Jockety. The weather was perfect—sunny and temperatures in the mid-50s.

As soon as the first tap was placed in a maple tree, the sap began flowing. It was instant gratification for the 45 girls in attendance.

The girls went on to help identify more maple trees at Camp KJ and before the sun set that day, more than 100 trees were successfully tapped.

Thanks to generous support from Battelle and Girl Scout alumna, Eileen Goodin, a new STEM program began for our girls. Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland has created a full-scale maple syrup operation at Camp K-J, allowing highly interactive experiences and learning for all ages. Girls learned about the effect of

weather on maple syrup production as the warm weather affected production yielding only about 13 gallons of delicious maple syrup.

The celebration continued with a Maple Syrup Festival on February 27 and 28. The Tree Tappers program engaged 331 girls and 248 adult volunteers in the science of bringing maple syrup from tree to table. Each festival day included a walking tour to learn about tapping maple trees, a trip to the Sugar Shack to watch the evaporator making the syrup, and a visit to the new Maple History Museum to learn about syrup production through history.
